Cleve "Pete" Steckler Jr

Vincennes, Ind. - Death of a Knox County couple found Friday inside their overturned car in a water -filled ditch were attributed by Coroner George Gardner to accidental drowning.
The victims were Cleve "Pete" Steckler Jr., 47, prominent farmer and oilman and his wife, Hazel, 46.
The coroner said Mr. and Mrs. Steckler were last seen around midnight.  Their car was discovered about 8 a.m. Friday by John Kohlhouse, a farmer who spotted the wheels sticking out of the water in a ditch along Band Mill Road, south of Vincennes.
Authorities said the couple's auto evidently left the country road, hit a bridge abutment and overturned in the ditch filled with 6 feet of water.
The coroner said he had visited with the Stecklers at a grocery Thursday afternoon.  Sacks of groceries were still in the car when it was removed from the ditch.
Coroner Gardner said the couple suffered only superficial injuries as a result of the car hitting the bridge and careening into the ditch.
Steckler was a WWII veteran, a member of the Old Cathedral, Elks Club, Harmony Club, Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He was a native of Mt. Carmel, Ill., and his wife was a native of Vincennes.
