Grant Bixler

U.G. BIXLER DIES SUDDENLY AT HOME AT EDGE OF CITY
FELT END NEAR AND CAME TO CITY THURSDAY TO SETTLE BUSINESS AFFAIRS.
WAS RETIRED FARMER AND REAL ESTATE MAN

Funeral Services Will be Held Sunday at 2:3O p. m. at First Methodist Church.

Friday's Daily.

Grant Bixler, retired farmer and real estate man, died suddenly at 11:20 o'clock Thursday night at his home at the edge of the city on the Portersville road.  Ailments of the stomach and heart caused his death, taking a man widely known and universally liked throughout the county.  He had been in failing health for several years, although he looked to be enjoying health.

Feeling that the end was approaching for him, Mr. Bixler came to Washington Thursday afternoon and settled up his business affairs; Thursday night after he had gone to bed, he began feeling worse and as he came down stairs he told his wife that he would "get down but he would never go upstairs again."

Mrs. Bixler tried to dispel his belief that death was near but was unsuccessful.

A doctor was called but death preceded his arrival.  His death was a great shock to his relatives and many friends.  Death was caused by valvular heart trouble.

Ulysses Grant Bixler was born April 2, 1861 near Haysville in Dubois county and moved to Daviess county in 1893, purchasing a farm in Washington township where he engaged in farming for a number of years.

Owing to failing health he gave up active farming a few years ago and engaged in the real estate business in Washington. About a year ago his health caused him to retire from this business also.

Although retired from active farm life, Mr. Bixler never gave up his interest in agriculture and was regarded as one of the best known farmers in the county.

He was married December 5, 1880 to Alice M. Waller, to which union three children were born-Ray Bixler, of Chicago; Ralph Bixler and Miss Lucile Bixler, of Washington. These three children, with the widow and one brother, W. F. Bixler, of Iola, Kas., survive him. Mr. Bixler was a member of the First M. E. church of Washington, and also a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. In politics he was a staunch republican. He was regarded as one of Washington's substantial and upright citizens.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church with interment following in Oak Grove cemetery.

Mrs. Julia Etta Blagrave

Mrs. John Blagrave died at her home in Alford Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock.

Several years ago she was stricken with paralysis and a greater part of the time since she had been confined to her bed.

Julia Etta Blagrave was the daughter of Seth and Melissa White.  She was born in Martin County, October 13, 1868 and departed this life in the afternoon of Friday, January 4, 1946. She was 78 years, 2 months and 22 days old at the date of death.

She was one of a family of eleven children, five of whom are living.  On September 1, 1889, she was united in marriage to John T. Blagrave, also a native of Martin County.  To this union two children were born Mrs. Nora Houghland and Mrs. William McCain both of whom reside in the Alford community.  Besides her two children, she reared two boys Teddy Brown, who died last spring and William Hilbert, who lived seven or eight years of his early life in her home.  She has four sisters and one brother living, Mrs. Mary Rutherford, of Florida, Mrs. Jane Himsel also of Florida, Mrs. Lydia Gibson of Davis City, Iowa and Mrs. Pearl McCord of Petersburg, Ind., and the brother, Blaine White of Colorado.

Three grand-children, two great-grand-children and a host of friends are left to mourn her passing.  In early married life she joined the united Brethren church in Martin County.  But when the family moved in 1907 to Alford, the Methodist church being the one nearest her home, she put her membership in that church, remaining a faithful member, until God called her home.  During her long illness, her never-ending patience and fortitude in suffering, never left her.  She always had a smile for everyone, who came to visit her. Beside being a kind and living wife and devoted mother, she was a wonderful neighbor and friends.  Past earth's dreary shadows, in regions more fair, Where cometh no trails, nor sorrows or care; Where day is eternal, beyond death's dark sea, My mother is waiting in Heaven for me. Funeral service were held Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock from the Alford Methodist church with Rev. L. L. Parker officiating. Burial was in Walnut Hill cemetery.

Obituary

Chester William Watson

Chester William, infant son of Fred A. and Sarah E. Watson, was born August 30, 1905, departed this brief life July 2, 1907 aged 1 year, 10 months and 2 days.  His illness was of almost two weeks duration and the last day or two was characterized by intense suffering.  During his illness he would call for his papa and mamma very frequently.  He endeared himself to his parents in so many different ways, but especially in meeting his father as he would return from his days work, at the gate or out along the path.  He leaves in addition to father and mother, one sister named Daisy Maude, to mourn his departure to the realms of bliss above.  The home and little casket was strewn with the most beautiful flowers, and the funeral was one of the most impressive ever witnessed at that of a child in this vicinity, as Chester was known by many and his winning manner and bright wit endeared him not only to his parents but to all with whom he came in contact.  Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at M. E. church with Rev. Sisson officiating.  Interment followed in IOOF cemetery. The family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
