Son of William Lee and Olivia Belle Abner; born November 2, 1893, Cannelburg, Daviess County, Ind. Moved to Martin County, 1908. Employe of Graham Glass Works, Okmulgee, Okla. Entered service September 19, 1917, Loogootee, Ind.

Trained at Camp Taylor, Ky. ; and Camp Shelby, Miss. Embarked June 11, 1918; assigned to Company E, 28th Infantry, 1st Division. Died of wounds October 13, 1918. Buried, Ambley, Aisne, France, Grave 8.

 

ALFORD, ISAAC Private

Son of George H. and Mary Anna Alford; born in 1881- Martin County, Ind. Farmer. Enlisted in the U.S. Regular Army October 21, 1914, Texas City, Texas. Assigned to Company F, 23rd Infantry; 305th Repair Shop, Quartermaster Department. Died of tuberculosis July 23, 1919, Ft. Bayard, New Mexico. Place of burial, Loogootee, Ind.

 

BRIDGES, GEORGE BARNARD - - - - Private

Son of Joel N. and Flora Bridges; born October 4, 1888, near Trinity Springs, Martin County, Ind. Principal of public schools, Logan, North Dakota. Enlisted June 12, 1917, Indianapolis, Ind. Received training at Camp Wilson, Tex., and Camp McArthur, Tex. Sailed May 27, 1918; assigned to 19th Field Artillery, Battery B, 5th Division. Fought in the Vosges, and St. Mihiel Offensive. Wounded November 7, 1918, and died November 9, 1918, at Base Hospital No. 82, Toul, France. Buried, Toul, France.

 

BRIDGES, WINFIELD SCOTT - - - - Private

Son of Levi A. and Mary E. Bridges; born November 15, 1886, Halbert Township, Martin County, Ind. Railroad employe. Entered service July 21, 1918, Shoals, Ind. Sent

to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to 27th Company, 7th Training Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Transferred to Camp McClellan, Ala.; assigned to Battery F, 26th Field Artillery. Died of lobar pneumonia October 21, 1918, Base Hospital, Camp McClellan. Buried in Clark's Cemetery, near Huron, Ind.

 

COLLINS, JOHN Wagoner

Son of John and Martha Collins; born March 16, 1894, Rutherford Township, Martin County, Ind. Farmer. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army February 19, 1915, Indianapolis.

Sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo.; assigned to Company M, 16th Infantry. Sailed June 4, 1917; assigned to Headquarters Troop, 1st Division. Injured in accident, and died February 24, 1918. Buried in American Cemetery near Menilla-Tour, Meurthe-et-

Moselle, France.

 

CORBIN, CLARENCE HOBART - - Apprentice Seaman Son of George M. and Stella M. Corbin; born January 4, 1897, Burns City, Martin County, Ind. Farm laborer in Iowa

at time of enlistment. Enlisted in U.S. Navy December 13, 1917, Omaha, Neb. Sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Chicago, 111., where he died of pneumonia, January

22, 1918. Buried near Burns City, Martin County, Ind.

FIELDS, JAMES OTTO ------ Corporal

Son of Richard H. and Ida Fields; born July 23, 1895, Loogootee, Martin County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service March 2, 1918. Trained at Camp Dodge, Iowa, and Ft. Bliss,

Tex. Assigned to Company D, 130th Infantry, 38th Division. Sailed May 28, 1918. Wounded November 10, 1918 in battle of Fresnes-en-Woevre, and died November 12, 1918. Buried at St. Mihiel, France. Awarded Distinguished Service Cross for extra- ordinary heroism in battle in which he was wounded.

 

HAGA, PLUMMER L. Corporal

Son of William F. and Sarah E. Haga; born September 7, 1891, Lost River Township, Martin County, Ind. Button cutter. Entered service October 3, 1917, Shoals, Ind. Trained

at Camp Taylor, Ky. ; and Camp Shelby, Miss. Assigned to Machine Gun Company, 151st Infantry-. Overseas October 4, 1918. Died of broncho-pneumonia October 23, 1918, Belmont Road Hospital, Liverpool, England. Buried in Everton Cemetery,

Liverpool, England.

 

HILBERT, JAMES ROSWELL ----- Private

Son of Emanuel Pierce and Mary F. Hilbert (Alford) born October 10, 1887, Lost River Township, Martin County, Ind. Served with U.S. Regular Army 1908-1911, Company B,

28th Infantry. Hospital Attendant at Orient, Ohio, at time of second enlistment June 20, 1917, Cincinnati, Ohio. Assigned to U.S. Marine Corps, 82nd Company, 6th Regiment. Died of wounds July 19, 1918, received in action. (Place of burial

unknown).

 

HOTZ, JESSE Private

Son of Robert and Katherine Hotz; born October 9, 1889, near Dover Hill, Martin County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service October 3, 1917, Shoals, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor,

Ky., with Company G, 151st Infantry. Transferred to Camp Shelby, Miss. Embarked from Camp Merritt, N. J. June 15, 1918. Assigned to Company K, 162nd Infantry; later to Company F, 16th Infantry. Killed in action in battle o Soissons, July 18, 1918. (Could not learn place of burial).

 

JEWELL, JOHN MARTIN - - - 2nd Lieutenant

Son of William and Sarah J. Jewell (deceased); born February 19, 1884, Bolinger Mills, (?) Mo. Moved to Indiana in 1888. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army November 1, 1906,

Bedford, Ind. Sergeant of Company M, 17th Infantry in Cuba, and on the Mexican Border. Transferred to Company H, 53rd Infantry. Sailed in June, 1917. Killed in action October 4, 1918. Buried in Cemetery Mittlach-Alsace, Grave 2, Row 3. Survived by widow, Mrs. Ella Jewell, Atlanta, Ga.

 

LYON, JOHN RAYMOND ------ Seaman

Son of Joel Campbell and Adaline Cannon Lyon; born October 3, 1899, Brown Township, Martin County, Ind. Machinist. Enlisted in U.S. Navy January 7, 1917, Terre

Haute, Ind. Stationed on the U.S. Battleship "Rhode Island." Became ill on board ship, and sent to Naval Hospital, League Island, Pa., where he died of pneumonia January 23, 1918. Buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Loogootee, Ind.

McFEE, ARTHUR HANSON Private

Son of Arthur N. and Josephine A. McFee; born February 17, 1898, Dover Hill, Martin County, Ind. Grocery clerk; law student. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army April 28, 1917,

Indianapolis, Ind. Trained at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., and Douglas, Ariz. Assigned to Company K, 18th Infantry, 1st Division. Sailed June 12, 1917. Gassed May 3, 1918. Died

in hospital, Beauvois, France, May 15, 1918. Buried in French Cemetery near Beauvois, Oise, France.

 

OSBORNE, ERNEST JAMES Private

Son of John F. and Josephine Maddox Osborne; born July 3, 1895, Loogootee, Martin County, Ind. Glassblower. Enlisted in U.S. Marines May 22, 1917, Evansville, Ind. Trained at Port Royal, S. C, Parris Island, S. C, and Quantico, Va. Assigned to 80th Company, 2nd Battalion, 6th Regiment, U.S. Marines. Overseas February, 1918. Killed in second battle of the Marne, June 3, 1918. Buried at Belleau, Aisne, France

 

PARSONS, ENOCH O. Private

Son of Joseph and Lizanah Street Parsons; born December 20, 1887, Rutherford Township, Martin County, Ind. Coal miner. Entered service September 4, 1917, Shoals, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. ; transferred to Camp Shelby, Miss.; assigned to Company F, 28th Infantry. Overseas in June, 1918. Participated in battle of Chateau-Thierry. Killed in action July 20, 1918. (Place of burial not known).

 

PATTERSON, CHARLES ROBERTIS - - - Private

Son of Joseph F. and Vira Elizabeth Patterson; born February 13,. 1895, Loogootee, Ind. Entered service March 29, 1918, Shoals, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. ; assigned to 32nd Company, 8th Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Transferred to Camp Mills, N. Y.; assigned to Company F, 47th Infantry. Died of pneumonia May 17, 1918, Camp Mills. Buried with military honors at Loogootee, Ind.

 

PATTERSON, LEONARD PHILIP - - Private, S.A.T.C.

Son of Charles and Louisa Patterson; born May 4, 1899, Loogootee, Ind. Student, teacher. Enlisted October 14, 1918, Shoals, Ind. Sent to Winona Lake, Warsaw, Ind.; assigned to duty in Motor Transport Department. Stricken with influenza, he was removed to a hospital in Warsaw, Ind., where he died October 28, 1918. Buried at Loogootee, Ind.

 

ROBERTS, JOHN OPAL ------ Private

Son of John S. and Ida F. Roberts; born July 18, 1893, Greene County, Ind. Moved to Martin County in 1895. Farmer. Entered service June 25, 1918, Shoals, Ind. Sent to

Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned to Company K, 334th Infantry, 84th Division. Embarked September 2, 1918. Taken ill and sent to Camp Hospital No. 78, (Hospital of 84th Division), south of Perigueux, where he died October 22, 1918. Buried in American Cemetery, Perigueux, Grave No. 532, France.   

 

SCOTT, CHARLES S. Private

Son of Samuel C. and Sarah C. Scott; born June 28, 1890, Martin County, Ind. Barber. Enlisted in 1917, Louisville, Ky. Received training in several camps. Sent to Camp Mills,

N. Y. Overseas in April, 1918; assigned to Company D, 26th Infantry, 1st Division. Wounded in the Argonne Forest September 3, 1918, and died the same day. Survived by widow, Oma Scott, and one child, Ellis Grant Scott, Wabash, Ind.

 

SPAULDING, SILAS MATHEW - - - - Private

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Spaulding; born November 25, 1888, Daviess County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service July 22, 1918, Shoals, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned

to 22nd Company, 6th Training Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Transferred to Camp McClellan, Ala.; assigned to Headquarters Company, 27th Field Artillery. Died of pneumonia December 22, 1918, Camp McClellan, Ala. Buried at Loogootee, Ind.
