Major Henry P. Thornton
Another link that bound us to the past, has been broken; in the death of Major Thornton, who died at his residence, in this place, on the 6th inst. The Major was the only remaining pioneer of the bar, of the many who adorned that profession in the early settlement of Indiana. One by one they have passed away--Whitcomb, Howk, Dewey, Thompson, Livingston, Naylor, Moore, Ross, Farnam, Rowland and others, filled up the alotted time of man, and were gathered to their fathers; and now, in the 84th year of his age, we are called upon to announce the death of the last of their line. Major Thornton was a man of unusual mental and physical vigor, which he retained to an extraordinary degree to the last. Early in life, he settled in Indiana, and took a prominent part in her affairs, frequently representing his constituency in the Legislature, and for many years in succession, he was Secretary of the Senate, and filled these positions with grace and ability. He served in the war of 1812, and for gallant service, was promoted to the rank of Major. During the present rebellion, he has been alive and burning with zeal and devotion to the old flag. He lived to see the rebellion put down, which he has for the past few years so indignantly denounced, and we know of no one who apperaed so much gratified with our final success. As a lawyer, he was successful, and in the vigor of life, enjoyed a heavy practice. As a forensic and public speaker, he was caustic and forcible, and for grace of delivery and logical clearness, had but few equals, even as late as five years ago. His memory was remarkable for its retention, and was well stored with incident and anecdote of the past. No man living, possessed such a fund of personal history and local fact, pertaining to southern Indiana. He long resided in Salem and New Albany, and only removed to this place about ten years ago. He leaves a wife, a large and respectable family of children, grandchildren, great grand children, and an extended circle of friends to mourn his death.
