Amanda (Turner) Maddox
Friday, May 5, 1899 In Memoriam A double grief has come to the family of Mrs. John Maddox. Death visited this home again and mother was taken. Aunt Amanda Turner Maddox was born near Leesville in Lawrence County, Ind., Dec. 23rd, 1833. Her parents, Reuben and Ona Turner, passed away many years ago. There were eleven children in the family, eight sons and three daughters. All have crossed the dark river but one, Jack Turner, who lives near Avoca. On the eighth day of January last Uncle John Maddox died at which time Mrs. Maddox was very low with pneumonia. And no one thought at the time that she could survive more than a few days. But she soon began to mend and in a few weeks was able to be out again. The children now thought that mother would soon be well again. On last Sunday she attended church in the forenoon. Her son, Mr. Lon Maddox, had come to visit her and was at her home when she returned from church. All enjoyed the noon meal together. But, alas! It was to be the last dinner at mothers' table on earth. She was taken sick late in the afternoon and rapidly grew worse, until death came at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25th, 1899. And thus it was that when the death angel had finished his work the granddaughter, who had so tenderly cared for mother so long was left alone. Mother! Oh that word! How the hope of a happy reunion cheers the sad dened heart. We had treasures in Heaven before. Well, what have we now? It was Daniel March who said, "The tears shed in the time of sowing give promise that the reaper shall bring home his full sheaves with rejoicing. That harvest of joy can spring only from seed that has been watered with the sower's tears." We must expect conflict if we hope for the crown. Aunt Amanda was married to John Maddox on May 19, 1853. For forty-six years they traveled in life together. She ate not the bread of idleness. She was an honor to him with whom she pledged her love, fidelity and reverence. Her home was clean. Her children called her blessed. At the tender age of sixteen she was converted to Christ, joining the church at the Floyd school house. Thus for more than fifty years she walked in his steps. The last Sunday of her life found her in her place at the house of God. She leaves one brother, an old soldier. Uncle Jack be ready to go. She leaves one son and three daughters, with several grandchildren to mourn. I don't wish to destroy a single earth tie. Thank God for mother's love. But children try to feel these hands that tucked you to bed a thousand times, still twining around you. That though her hands are out of sight, they are beckning you on. May the loving Grace of Jesus lead you until you shall fall into the sleep that knows no wakening........The funeral services were held at the house in North Bedford conducted by the writer. After which the body was laid to rest at Green Hill. J.W.

Rachel Ann Malott
June 26, 1875 DEATH OF MRS. MALOTT. Perhaps not in the history of our town had such universal gloom been cast over Bedford as was occasioned by the news which so rapidly spread from store to store, from residence to residence, from office to office, from shop to shop, and communicated from pedestrian to pedestrian, on last Saturday morning, of the sudden and altogether unexpected death of one of the most highly esteemed and valued ladies of Lawrence County--RACHEL ANN MALOTT. For a time after the sad occurrence all manner of business ceased; the yard-stick lay idle upon the counter, the clerk dropped his pen and leaned meditatingly over his desk, the book of the student lay motionless in his lap, the hammer of the mechanic ceased to give forth its usual clink, the wheels of the vehicle remained motionless, and the hurrying to and from the residence of the beloved dead by dear relatives and more intimate friends was the only perceptible indication that all animated nature had not ceased to move. Stout-hearted men were seen weeping like children, ladies giving forth sobs and shrieks calculated to move to grief the most hardened sinner, children crying as if their innocent little hearts would break--all, high and low, rich and poor, seemed to unite in general sorrow at the loss of one who was as near perfection in every respect as probably it were possible for a human being to reach. Mrs. Malott was truly an exception to poor weak nature. While she possessed every virtue that might be written on paper, not a single fault could be recorded to offset her good qualities. A devoted Christian, possessed of a loving and gentle disposition, kind to her neighbors and charitable to the poor--hunting out and relieving suffering in whatever shape it was found, so endearing herself to the unfortunate beings of our town that they now feel lonely indeed. Space will not permit, and our pen is inadequate to do justice to poor Mrs. Malott. Did we say poor? O God, that we were as rich in Divine grace as she who now, as certainly as the existence of a Merciful Father in heaven, dwelleth with the angels in that happy abode beyond the skies, where all is sunshine, and no clouds of disappointment ever appear--waiting, but not impatiently, for those who mourn her loss here below. And may we all so live that, by the help of an Allwise Creator, leaving his world of trouble, sorrow and disappointment, we may be able to meet the lamented Rachel in the land of the blessed. The immediate cause of Mrs. M.'s death was heart disease, though she had been in feeble health for some months previous. The saddest thing to contemplate about her death is the fact that so sudden and unexpected was the occurrence (even to herself), she was not permitted to speak a parting word to her devoted husband, Thos. H. Malott, or an admonition to her lovely brood of little children, four in number, two boys and two little girls. The funeral services took place at the Christian Chapel at 4 o'clock, p.m. last Sunday. The house was filled to its utmost capacity, and the intense interest shown plainly indicated the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The funeral over, a large procession followed the remains to the cemetery, and as the earth hid the case containing the silent form from view forever, a scene of grief took place far surpassing any thing of the kind we ever witnessed in a graveyard.

Charles McFadden
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1918 GRANDFATHER Of Mrs. Thoms Barton, North I Street, Died This Morning At St. Joe, Mo. FORMERLY RESIDED HERE Charles McFadden, the aged grandfather of Mrs. Thomas Burton, North I street, passed away this morning in the hospital at St. Joe, Missouri. Mr. McFadden was born in South Carolina September 21, 1834, coming to this county overland with his parents when nine years of age, so his life was practically spent here. In his prime he was one of the most prominent farmers living three miles northeast of this city. In his early manhood he was married to Miss Sarah Bivens and to them were born four daughters, all of whom with the mother have passed on. He was the last of a large family to go. After the rigors of age forbade his working he made his home alternately with his son-in-law, William Orr and daughters at Shelbina, Mo., and his granddaughter, Mrs. Barton, in this city. He was of a jovial disposition and added brightness to the homes in which he was an inmate being repaid in kind with the affection of his grandchildren. On the Fourth of July he was stricken with hemorrhage of the brain while visiting relatives near Smithville and never recoverd his former health, barely holding his own until the last summons came. Mr. Orr and daughters will accompany the remains to this city expecting to arrive Friday evening and go directly to the Barton home on North I street. The funeral services will probably take place Sunday morning at Pleasant Run church.
FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 1918 FUNERAL Of Charles McFadden Will Be Conducted From Pleasant Run Church Sunday. BURIAL WILL BE THERE A message has been received from Will Orr, of St. Joseph, Mo., who is enroute with the remains of his father-in-law, Charles McFadden, stating that he is delayed on account of a wreck between St. Joseph and St. Louis and will not reach this city until Saturday morning. Juett L. Messick
April 17, 1875 JUETT L. MESSICK. Whose death had been anticipated for some weeks, was relieved of his sufferings by being called from earth to dwell among his brethren who had gone before, on Thursday morning last at 1 o'clock. For several years past Mr. Messick had been aware that his end was rapidly approaching, but he bore his sufferings with prayerful patience and Christian fortitude. His disease (a complicated affection of the heart) was of an incurable nature, but every thing possible was done by kind friends and relatives, and skillful physicians, to prolong his life to the last possible moment. The deceased was born in Jessamine county, Ky., in the year A. D. 1824. His parents moved to Indiana when he was quite young, but at the age of 15 Juett returned to his native State, served an apprenticeship at the tailoring trade, and married; after which he moved to this county, where he has resided ever since, highly respected by all who knew him as an industrious mechanic, a good, honest, charitable citizen, and an exemplary Christian. We believe he never held any public office of trust except that of Clerk and Treasurer of Bedford, from which he acquitted himself with credit. His remains were borne to the Christian Chapel on Thursday aftternoon, where an able funeral sermon was listened to by a large audience of mourning and weeping relatives and friends; after which the solemn funeral procession slowly wended its way to the cemetery, and there separated with a revered friend till called to meet him in that land where sickness and suffering is not known. The grief-stricken wife and children left behind have the sympathy of the entire public.
