Lemuel Leach
THURSDAY, JANUARY 3, 1918 LEM LEACH KILLED UNDER B. & O. TRAIN NEAR LIGHT PLANT Man Deaf and Almost Blind Did Not Hear Approach Of Branch Train. BODY WAS NOT MAIMED Two Young Men Saw Tragedy And Tried To Give Warning In Time. Lemuel Leach, aged about 65 years, was instantly killed this forenoon about 10:30 o'clock when he was struck by the B. & O. S-W. branch train as it was leaving the city. Leach was struck by the tender of the engine which was backing and the body was dragged and rolled along until when the the train stopped it was wedged in a position between the fire box and the big drive wheels. Two young men saw the tragedy and attempted to give warning by calling to Leach. Leach realized his danger, but was caught before he could get off the track. The young men yelled to the engineer and the train was stopped in about "three telegraph poles." It required thirty minutes to get the body from its position under the engine. It was placed along side the track and the train proceeded. The body was removed to the Hamer & Day Undertaking establishment and prepared for burial. The victim had for a number of years been a familiar figure about the city. He walked with a decided limp and usually carried a cane. He was blind in the right eye and was also nealy deaf. For some time he had depended upon the help of the city and often solicited help. In his clothing at the time of his death was an appeal for help stating that he was nearly blind and also deaf. Coroner Snow viewed the body at the Hamer & Day Undertaking establishment and found that the back was broken and all of the ribs crushed. There was a number of bruises and cuts on the body, but it was not badly maimed. The two young men who saw the accident were on their way from the "dust plant" to the electric light plant and were coming up a path approaching the railroad. Ed Turpin, in the rear, saw the train approaching and saw Leach's danger. He yelled first and both tried to make him hear. When about ten feet away Leach realized his danger and jumped towards the north side of the track, but changed his mind and tried to get off the south side. He was struck before he could get out of the way. The train was in charge of Conductor Gilbert and Engineer Fry. Leach had been living at the home of Son Brown, 13th street and had resided in this community for many years. It is understood that a sister, Mrs. Hugh Arnold, resides at Bloomington. An effort was made to communicate with her this afternoon and funeral arrangements will not be made until some word is received. In the letter to the public asking for help he stated that he had two children to look after. A son-in-law was expected down from Bloomington late this afternoon to look after the funeral arrangements.

Thomas Donnard Lowden
FRIDAY, JAN. 14, 1898 DEATH OF THOMAS DONNARD LOWDEN-- Mrs. Wm. Erwin received, last Thursday, a message from her niece, Nellie Reiley Lowden, announcing the death of the latter’s husband, Thomas Donnaud Lowden, on January 5, at Austin, Texas. Mrs. Lowden, who is a daughter of the late Dr. W. S. Rieley, spent her early years in Bedford, where she has relatives and a large circle of friends to sympathize with her in her sad bereavement, which is rendered doubly painful on account of the recent death of her mother, Mrs. Iras E. Rieley. The following is copied from a New Orleans paper: ”Tom Lowden was born in New Orleans twenty-eight years ago, and was the son of Capt. R. J. Lowden and Eugenie Donnaud. While Capt. Lowden was manager of the late Avenue Theatre of this city, young Lowden developed remarkable histrionic powers eventually leading to his adoption of the stage as a profession. Making a specialty of comic opera and character delineation, he very soon earned recognition in his line throughout the North and East. In Texas he successfully organized a number of companies for summer engagements at the various resorts, chiefly, Austin and Galveston, varying his work with drilling children for operatic entertainments and organized social opera and dramatic companies. He possessed a splendid voice, an attractive appearance and a high degree of personal magnetism. Last. October, while in Houston, he was attacked by dengue in a violent form, from which he never recovered. A devout Christian, a fond husband and devoted son, Thomas Lowden will be sincerely mourned by his friends in and out of the profession. He leaves a widow, who was with him in his dying hours, and a large number of relatives in New Orleans.
