Elizabeth A. Hendricks

MARCH 08, 1865 On Friday, March 3d, 1865 after a brief illness Elizabeth A. wife of Joseph Hendricks of this place.
MAY 17, 1865 DIES In Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana March 3d, 1865, ELIZABETH A. HENDRICKS. She was born in Clark County, Indiana, Oct. 12, 1823. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Athon, who were both taken from her by the relentless hand of death, when she had only seen ten bright summers. Although she was left an orphan at ten years of age, she had a kind brother to care for her; Dr. Jas S. Athon took her to his home in Charlestown, Ind., where she grew up to womanhood, and was united in marriage to Joseph A Hendricks of Bedford, Ind., (her now much bereaved husband) Oct. 26th, 1843. Sister Hendricks, joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, on probation, February 1842; under the labors of Constance B. Jones, February, 1843, she was happily converted to God, and received into fellowship, and from that time, until her death, she was a member of the church, and a consistent Christian.  She was a true and loving wife, a kind and doting mother, and she leaves behind her a lonely husband, and five little children, whose hearts are never again to be charmed on earth, by her gentle voice. Her death was one never to be forgotten by those who witnessed it. It was strengthening to the Christian's heart, to see the power of divine grace supporting and sustaining the dying Christian. She was the first to recieve the presentations of her own death. On Sabbath evening, while her husband and four children bowed around the family altar (James the oldest, being far away in the distant army) she seemed to receive a dispatch as though some angel from Heaven had told her she must soon go from earth away to be no more here; after a moments examination she found all was ready and when the husband arose from prayer she said " I am going to leave you all, my Savior calls me and I must go; praise the Lord, I am so happy. Blessed Jesus I can never praise him enough." She called them around her bed, and in a most earnest manner, exhorted them all to meet her in Heaven. She bid them all farewell and thus continued to praise God until she passed to her home in Heaven. We that were there can truly say:
" I heard her bid the world adieu,
I saw her on the rolling billow,
Her far off home appeared in view,
While yet she pressed a dying pillow."
May Heaven protect the deeply afflicted husband and the motherless children, and bring them all to Heaven at last. WILLIAM F. HARNED

Harry Hodges

FRIDAY, JAN. 12,1900 DEATH OF HARRY HODGES Harry Hodges, who was so badly hurt a few days ago by being thrown from a horse, died Saturday night from the effect of his injuries. The funeral took place Tuesday at 11 o'clock a.m. Burial at the Brick church.
FRIDAY JAN. 19, 1900 OBITUARY This article is written as the last tribute of respect to Harry E. Hodges. The subject of this sketch was born in Orange county, Ind., Jan. 15th, 1871, and died at the home of his brother, in Bedford, Jan. 6, 1900, aged 28 yrs., 11 mo. and 21 days. The circumstances which resulted in his death are about as follows: On the 14th of December (last), while returning to Bedford on horse-back leading a cow for the beef shop, the animal took fright at the north end of the bridge on the Limestone road, pulling away from him. The horse that he was riding, had a sore on his back, and the effort which Mr. Hodges made to hold the animal caused the saddle to pinch the sore. The horse began bucking, throwing Harry. He fell to one side of the road, lighting on a rough stone, causing fatal injuries. This happened about noon, and near the old Farmer house. Just at that time Dr. Short came down the hill, going to Limestone. He took charge of the injured man, assisted by Mr. Frank Smith, who came up just at that time. The Farmer house is occupied by a family by the name of Gowens, who did what they could to help the suffering man, who was taken into their house. Dr. Short returned from Limestone a few hours later, finding him in a dying condition. The poor fellow was as cold as ice, but conscious. The injuries were internal and from their nature, it was supposed that he would not rally, The whole night was spent to trying to get reaction. It was an heroic effort to save life. On the next day he was taken to the home of his brother, in Bedford. Drs. Freeland and Duncan were also summoned, who did all they could for him. The conflict between life and death finally ended after a struggle of 21 days, and Harry fell into that sleep from which no friend on earth could awaken him. He bore his  suffering without a word of complaint. He retained his reason till within a few hours of his death. It was thought by many that he stood a chance of getting well but it was a vain hope. Harry joined the church at Leatherwood in Aug., 1893, at the age of 22. This was a wise choice, choosing between life and death, he took life, building on the rock foundation. On November 14, 1894, Miss Jennie Teague became his wife. To them was born one child, a son, little Paul, who survives. Brother Harry was a bright young man of industrious habits, was loved by all who knew him. He was the first one of the family to cross the Dark River. Father, mother, four brothers and five sisters are left to mourn, but Heaven is dearer to you now as one of your number is over there. It will not be long until some other one of you will join him in that "sweet by and by". Harry will be missed every where, but especially in the family circle, but enough has been said I trust. Let us remember to be good and kind to all, following in the footsteps of Jesus. Let us be ready when he comes. The funeral took place at the home of his parents, 4 miles east of Bedford. The services were conducted by Rev. James Small and the writer, after which the remains were buried at Leatherwood. Farewell dear brother. J. Williams
CARD OF THANKS. Mr. and Mrs. Hodges desire to express their love to the many friends, who were so kind to help them in their great affliction. J. W.

Iva (McKnight) Hodges

FRIDAY, MAY 31, 1901 OBITUARY Iva McKnight Hodge, the younger daughter of Sam and Sementha McKnight, was born July 30, 1870, and died May 17,1901. After an illness of nearly three years of that dreadful disease consumption, and while she suffered untold agony, she was never heard to complain but was always cheerful and trying to seem better until the end. She was always queenly in her bearing. She possessed many noble qualities. She was naturally of a quiet disposition and it can truly be said that she was loved by all who knew her with an ardent affection. She was the idol of her father's flock and was almost worshiped by her brothers and sisters. That same bright, sunny disposition that made for her so many friends never forsook her even during the suffering of her long illness. She was never suffering so much but what she had a sweet smile and a kind word for those who came near her. Everything that kind and loving hands could do was done for Iva and she always gave a smile of thanks in return. She was married to Frank Hodge Nov. 25,1892. To this union was born one son, little Ollie and our hearts are made sad by the thought that one so young, so tender in years, is left without a mother's care. Iva united with the M. E. church at Erie in the year 1892 and continued a faithful member until the end. Her attachment for home and home duties and her own delicate health prevented her regular attendance at church. Her christian life was more of the good Samaritan type. Visiting the sick and cheering the sad and heavy-hearted. She left the happy assurance that she was ready when the change came. O, what a sunrise was hers! Out of the shadow, out of the twilight of that May morning into the full splendor of a nightless day. Closing her eyes on the group of sorrowing, weeping, broken hearted loved ones, but opening them in Heaven. The funeral was held at her home on Sunday afternoon, May 16, and was conducted by Rev. Edwards, his words being filled with tenderness for the young life just gone into the hereafter and with kind sympathy for her sorrowing loved ones. The large crowd assembled that beautiful Sabbath afternoon and the sobs and grief that shook the vast congregation were the sincerest evidences of the deep affection in which Iva was held and we feel that earth is indeed poor but Heaven is rich by reason of this change; and let us try to live so we shall meet in that Home above. A FRIEND. (Ikerd Cemetery)
