Clara Davis
THE BEDFORD DAILY TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA Saturday, Oct. 19, 1940 WOMAN STRUCK BY LOCOMOTIVE BROUGHT HERE Mrs. Clara Davis, Mitchell, Suffers Critical Injury At Crossing Mrs. Clara Davis died in Dunn Hospital at 11:30 o'clock this morning, a few minutes after she was brought here from Mitchell. She had been struck by a locomotive at Mitchell two hours earlier. Attending physicians staged a desperate fight today to save the life of Mrs. Clara Davis of Mitchell, who was brought to Dunn Memorial hospital shortly before noon today after the wheels of a freight engine passed over her body at the Fifth street crossing with the B. & O. railroad in Mitchell this morning. Mrs. Davis, who is 45 years of age, suffered the loss of a leg and an arm, and her body was badly mangled. The accident occured about mid-morning, when the feight train pulled into a siding for water. The engine was uncoupled and moved up the tracks to the water tank, and simultaneously the crack No. 1 National limited passed on the main tracks. Witnesses believed that Mrs. Davis stepped onto the tracks as the limited cleared, and walked into the path of the approaching engine. Engineer John Darling, Fireman Lawrence Cochran and Brakeman Trustee Edwards, the latter standing on the rear tender of the engine, each said they saw her as she fell beneath the wheels of the locomotive. There were no other eyewitnesses to the accident. Dr. J. R. Hamilton of Mitchell was called to the scene and administered first aid, before ordering the removal of Mrs. Davis to his office. The body was found about twenty feet from the crossing when the engine drew to a stop. Dr. Hamilton said the victim was in too critical condition to bring her immediately to the hospital. She was treated for extreme shock before Haverly ambulance rushed her to Bedford. Meanwhile, members of the family hurried to Bedford only to find that Mrs. Davis had been taken to the physician's office. They returned to Mitchell and were back at the hospital shortly after the amublance arrived. Mrs. Edwards (Davis) was conscious when members of the train crew reached her, they said. She was calling for members of her family. The engine was moving slowly at the time of the accident, members of the crew said. The freight was east-bound to Cincinnati.

Little Zora Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Davis, of Judah, died Jan. 16, 1901, age 2 years. She had been sick for several weeks when the Heavenly Father gathered one more angel into his kingdom. The little rosebud leaves a mother, father, and three sisters to mourn its loss, which can never be replaced.
Let your poor hearts take some comfort,
Friends of thine so sad and sweet,
For your little spotless darling
God has called it to the beautiful shore,
For the Savior far more loving,
From his white throne bending down,
Lifted up your spotless darling,
To a bright immortal crown.
