FRIDAY, DEC. 1, 1978 Gerald Dean Baker, 45-year-old resident of Avoca, died at 7:45 p.m. on Nov. 30 at Bloomington Hospital following an illness of one month. He was a welder at Kaiser Aluminum and a member of Local 2214 IBEW of Bedford. Born on June 28, 1933, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Basil and Ruth Beavers Baker. He married Janice Grissom on August 18, 1956. Surviving are a son, Michael Dean Baker, Bedford, R. 10; a daughter, Lisa Anne Baker, also of Bedford; a grandson; one brother, Garry Baker of Fort Myers, Fla., and two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Naomi) White and Mrs. Ricahrd (Marsha) Gotwals, both of Bedford.

Granville Baker
Tuesday, May 26, 1955 Baker Rites Set Funeral Services for Granville Baker, will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the Sherwood-Ferguson 7 Speer Funeral Home. Mr. Baker's death was reported by bulletin in yesterday's Times-Mail. In failing health for eight months, critically ill one wee, Mr. Baker expired at noon yesterday in Dunn Memorial Hospital. he had been admitted to the hospital Tuesday afternoon. A native of Greene County, he will be returned for burial in the Howell Cemetery at Koleen. Ninety-one years old Tuesday, May 24, the son of David and Susan Hardesty Baker, was married on September 3, 1887, to Sallie Wright, also of Koleen. His wife survives. The Bakers moved to Bedford in 1894, and Mr. Baker was employed for thirty years in a heading factory, making barrels. He later was employed by local stone mills as a diamond sawyer. Surviving in addition to his wife, Sallie, are four daughters; Louise Baker, Jennie Lester, Mrs. Grace Lee and Mrs. J. V. Sipes; two sons, Clayton Baker and Richard Baker; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one sister Mrs. Lewis Wright. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1978 Stella Lewis Baker, 87, Avoca, died at 5 p.m. Friday at the E. B. Crowe Memorial Hospital here where she had entered the same day. She had been ill for several years. She was born June 28, 1891, in Lawrence County, the daughter of Samuel and Mary Alice Burch Massey. She first married Jot Lewis and he died Oct. 8, 1918. Her second marriage was to Aden Baker and he also preceded her in death. She was a member of the Hilltop Pentecostal Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Mary A.) Scheffel of Bedford; four sons, Emmett Lewis, Chester Lewis, and Billy Don Baker, all of Bedford, and Spencer Baker of Lansing Mich.; 12 grandchildren, several great and great-great grandchildren, and one step-son, Elzie Baker of New Castle, Ind. She was preceded in death by a son, Russell Lewis; two grandchildren; two sisters, Josephine Turner and Elsie Kirkman, and one brother, Hobart Massey. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Hilltop Pentecostal Church with Rev. Charles Scalf and Rev. Jan Spaulding presiding. Burial will follow in the Hilltop Cemetery. Friends may call at the Day & Carter Mortuary after 4 p.m. Sunday and at the Hilltop Pentecostal Church from 12:30 p.m. Monday until the funeral hour.

TUESDAY, NOV 19, 1940 DEATH CLAIMS LOCAL WOMAN Long Illness, Operations Fatal To Mrs. Maggie M. Banks, Native of Salem Maggie Millie May Banks passed away this moring at 5:35 o'clock at the residence, 2315 Washington avenue, following an illness of two years. She was 66 years of age. A native of Salem, she was the daughter of John A. and Sallie Ann Hendricks Cauble, and was married to Jesse Banks in Bedford. Mrs. Banks was a member of the First Baptist church and the Ben Hur order. Beside the husband, she leaves a daughter, Mrs. William Meissner of this city; one granddaughter, Miss Marjorie Meissner, Bedford; a brother John E. Cauble of Salem; a sister, Mrs. Rosa Peters of Salem, and a niece Mrs. Lew Ikerd of Bedford. Mrs. Banks had been under treatment at the Robert Long hospital in Indianapolis, where she underwent an operation in March, 1939. The remains will be returned to the residence at 5 o'clock this afternoon, to lie in state. Funeral services will be conducted from the Sherwood & Ferguson chapel on Thrusday afternoon at 2 o'clock by the Rev. W. E. Sharp, pastor of the First Baptist church. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 4, 1979 Terry Lee Barlow, 26, of Muscatatuck State Hospital, Butlerville, Ind., died at 3:05 p.m. Saturday at the hospital. Born October 30, 1952, in Bedford, to Hillard W. and Marilyn Meadows Barlow, he had never married. Surviving are the mother, Mrs. Clifford (Marilyn) Sherman of Littleton, Colo.; the father, Hillard W. Barlow of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Michael W. Barlow, Lakewood, Colo.; the maternal grandfather, Oren Meadows of Bedford, and the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Gladys Barlow of Bedford. There will be graveside services at 10 a.m. Friday in Leatherwood Cemetery with the Rev. James Bowyer officiating. There will be no calling and the casket will not be open at any time. Services are under the direction of Day & Carter Mortuary. The family asks that friends consider contributions to their favorite charity.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 1973 Everett Baugh, 83, Tunnelton, passed away at 10:45 p.m. Thursday at the Bedford Nursing Home. He was born in Lawrence County March 16, 1889, son of Joseph and Mary Baugh. Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Minnie McCurdy, Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Kathern Markham, Denver, Colo., Mrs. Madeline Spencer, Webster, Wisc., and Mrs. Wilma Crusean, Highland, Ind., and several nieces and nephews. Three brothers, Elmer, Claude, and Charles Baugh preceded him in death. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday from Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell, Rev. Robert Kirkman officiating. RUSKIN, Fla. -- Emilie Mabel Sowder Baumunk, 83, Ruskin, Fla., formerly of Bedford, died Tuesday at South Bay Hospital in Tampa, Fla. Born in Bedford, she was the daughter of Talmadge and Lula (Stewart) Donica. She married Vernon Sowder and he preceded her in death. She next married Carl L. Baumunk and he survives. She was a homemaker and member of the Church of the Nazarene. Surviving are her husband, Carl L. Baumunk of Ruskin, Fla.; three sons: Vernon G. Sowder of Bowling Green, Gayles Sowder of Bedford and David Sowder of Danville; one daughter, Diane Wilson of Mooresville; two brothers: Glen Donica of Bedford and Wayne Donica of Martinsville; one sister, Mae Moore of Bedford; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, Bedford. Burial will follow in Hanson Cemetery, Lawrence County. MONDAY, JANUARY 13, 1936 Impressive Rites For John Beasley Are Held Sunday Rev. Otto Duncan In Charge Of Services At Buddha Church Impressive rites for John Beasley, former local resident, who passed away at the Indianapolis City Hospital on Friday, were held from the White River Baptist church at Buddha yesterday afternoon at 1:00 with Rev. Otto Duncan of Englewood in charge. The Stone City quartette, composed of Clyde Freeman, J. J. Tatom, Gordon Lee and Campbell Fields sang "Under His Wing," "It Is Well With My Soul," and "Death Is Only a Dream." The floral offerings were carried by Misses Pauline and Bessie Beasley. The pallbearers were McKinley, Harris, Clyde and Opal Beasley, Buryl Reed, Theodore Gillen and Lawrence Able. Interment took place in the Tunnelton cemetery.

Mon., OCT 14, 1940 STONE WORKER DIES AT HOME William J. Benzel Passes In Sleep Early Sunday Morning William J. Benzel, native of Germany, and stone planerman at the Salem Mill of Indiana Limestone Co., was found dead in bed at the home of his son, Elmer Benzel, 1511 Eleventh street, on Sunday morning. He had apparently beed dead since about one o'clock Sunday morning. The daughter-in-law discovered him when she went to his bedroom to call him. Mr. Benzel was 73 years of age. He had resided in this country since he was three years old, and received his final citizenship papers in 1932(?). He was a member of the First Methodist church. Dr. R. E. Wynn, county coroner, said Mr. Benzel had been complaining for the past ten days of a slight ailment, and on Saturday night retired earlier than usual. When he failed to arise Sunday morning, the daughter-in-law went to his room, and found the body. Besides ths son, in whose home he was staying, Mr. Benzel was survived by five other sons, Arthur and Haase Benzel, Fort Wayne, Harry Benzel of Los Angeles, Alfred Benzel of Louisville, Ky., and Robert Benzel of Tulsa, Okla.; one daughter, Mrs. Clarence Rhoda of Bedford; thirteen grandchildren; one brother, Ferd Benzel, New Ulm, Minn., and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Haarstick of Fergus Falls, Minn., Miss Augusta Benzal, Goodthunder, Minn., and Mrs. Tena Detjen, Amboy, Minn. The remains lie in state at Day-Carter & Roach funeral home until the hour of the funeral. Services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from Elmwood Chapel, the Rev. R. O McRae officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery.

Friday, Oct. 18, 1940 SPICE VALLEY RESIDENT DIES Jonathan J. Blanton, War Vet, Passes Away Early Today At Home Jonathan J. Blanton, Spice Valley farmer and World war veteran, passed away at his home this morning of a heart ailment at 7:15 o'clock. He was 44 years of age. A native of Harlan county, Kentucky, he had been a school teacher in that state before moving to his home in this county nine years ago. He was born Feb. 14, 1896, to Robert and Anna Bailey Blanton, and was married in 1921 to Mellie Howard. She passed away Sept. 25, 1938. Mr. Blanton was a member of the Baptist church. Surviviing are two sons, Cecil and Donovan Blanton, and four daughters, Eula Mae, Frances Irene, Elizabeth Ann and Mable Leona, all at home; three brothers, William Blanton of Spice Valley township, and Grover and Moses Blanton of Harlan county, Kentucky; three sisters, Mrs. Sallie Saylor, Spice Valley, Mrs. Kelan Howard and Mrs. Elizabeth Petrey, both residing in Kentucky; a foster daughter, Mrs. Addie McDermed, of Spice Valley. Funeral services will be conducted from Bond's chapel at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, the Rev. Arthur Baker, pastor of the Huron Baptist church, officiating. Burial will be in Bond cemetery. The remains will be returned to the home from Haverly mourtuary in Mitchell

Wednesday, August 3, 1910 DIED TODAY Mrs. Emma Bowman, Wife Of Edward Bowman, Four Miles East Of the City, Passed Away This Morning. FUNERAL TOMORROW AFTERNOON Mrs. Emma Bowman, age 48, wife of Edward Bowman, residing about four miles east of the city, died at her home this morning at 8: 00 o'clock, following a lingering illness with tuberculosis. She was a native of this county, and was born and reared near where she died. A husband, two sons and two daughters survive. The funeral services will be conducted from the home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be at the Crawford Cemetery.

Isaac Dennison Bowman
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1918 I. D. BOWMAN Passed Away At His Home In Independence, Kansas, Following Illness Six Weeks. BORN AND REARED HERE. Isaac Dennison Bowman passed away at his home in Independence, Kansas, December 16th following his last fatal illness of six weeks duration. He was born in this county April 29, 1846 and was reared here. When but a lad of sixteen he answereed Lincoln's call for volunteers enlisting in Co. A, 67th regiment Indiana Infantry, the regiment having been mustered into service at Madison, Ind., August 18 (?), 1862. With his company he served with credit the full three years, most of the time in the Mississippi country. In January, 1863 he received a gunshot wound at a battle at Arkansas Post which left him with a disabled arm. He was married May 15th, 1892 to Miss May Taylor, who survives him. Shortly after the Civil War he went to Kansas settling at Sedan where he became one of the most influential citizens. He was a member of the Christian church of that place for many years. He was also a member of the G. A. R. Four years ago he moved to Independence, Kansas where the funeral services were held at the Christian church the G. A. R. having the funeral in charge at which time the commander of the Post made a few personal remarks, called forth by the fact that he had served in Co. A of the same regiment. The remains were taken to Sedan, his old home, where interment was made. Besides the widow left to mourn the loss of this good man are one brother, John Bowman, of this city; a sister, Mrs. Joseph Hendricks, east of the city, and many friends.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1989 OOLITIC - Etta B. Brafford, 88, 710 Walnut Street, Oolitic, died at 5:17 p.m. Saturday at the Bloomington Hospital, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Lawrence County on May 8, 1901, to Daniel and Mary Alice Pruett Blake. She married William Brafford in June, 1922, and he survives. She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal faith. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters: Mary Oliver, Oolitic, and Donna Terry, Corpus Christi, Tex.; two sons: Delmar Brafford, Oolitic, and Ward Brafford, Miami Lake, Fla.; one brother, Ray Blake, Bedford; one sister, Venna Baker, Bedford; nine grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Day & Carter Mortuary, with the Rev. Richard Tallman officiating. Burial will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 2-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. till time of service Tuesday at the mortuary.

Marvin M. Branham, 74, 714 S St., Bedford, died at 5:35 p.m. Thursday at Dunn Memorial Hospital, Bedford. Born in Medcalf [Metcalfe] County, Ky., he was the son of James Oscar and Letha (Farley) Branham. He married Allene E. Denney on Aug. 19, 1946, and she survives. He retired in 1984 from Coastal Tank Lines, Madison. He was of Baptist faith and a member of the Teamsters Union until retirement. Surviving in addition to his wife, Allene Branham of Bedford, are two sons: Donald and Wallace Branham, both of Bedford; two daughters: Geneva Roark of Bedford and Marlene Hendershot of Elizabethtown; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Harlin and Carlos Branham; and three sisters: Lucille Ferguson, Dorothy Myers and Ruby Shaw. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Day & Carter Mortuary, Bedford, with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Bedford. MONDAY, FEB. 11, 1985 James T. Brim, 52, R. 3, Mitchell, died at 4:33 p.m. Sunday at Dunn Memorial Hospital. He was born April 13, 1932, in Lawrence County, to Orville and Ellen Phillips Brim. He married Betty Higgs March 19, 1949, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, James E. Brim, Mitchell, and Larry Brim, Orleans; six daughters, Gayle Wininger, Orleans, Rhonda Wininger, Orleans, Jennifer Enochs, Cicero, Ill., Sue Mitros, Oaklawn, Ill., Jackie Wininger, Paoli, and Vickie Crane, Mitchell; one brother, Charles Brim, Mitchell; three sisters, Louise Allen, Mitchell, Pauline Graham, Vallonia, and Helen Adams, Mitchell, and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters and one grandchild. He was an independent stone mason and attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Mitchell. He was a member of the Bedford Boat and Sportsman Club, Eagles Lodge, Gillen Post 33, American Legion, and a veteran of the Korean War. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell, Bro. Harry Holt officiating. Burial will be in the Mitchell Cemetery with graveside military rites by Gillen Post 33, American Legion. Friends may call in Chapel B of the mortuary after noon Tuesday.

THURSDAY, MAY 23, 1996 Harold Brinegar, 86, Bedford, formerly of Kokomo, died at 11:05 p.m. Wednesday at Westview Nursing and Rehab Center, Bedford. Born in Lawrence County, he was the son of Knoful and Lelah (Lewis) Brinegar. He married Ruby Hall in 1940 and she died Feb. 11,1996. He was a World War II Army veteran, teaching at Camp Atterbury. A graduate of Needmore High School and Central Normal College in Danville, he received his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees at Indiana University. He taught elementary education and was a professor at Indiana University, where he headed the Education Department. He and his wife took the Indiana University Education Program to Thailand and taught there for four years. He was head of the Indiana University School of Education at Kokomo and had the first graduating class there, retiring in 1974. Surviving are one sister, Annetta Kastner of Elkhart; two brothers: William "Bill" Kirkman of Tunnelton and George Kirkman of Avoca. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Darrell M. Brinegar; and one nephew. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Day & Carter Mortuary, Bedford, with Bro. Mike Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Garden. MONDAY, FEB. 12, 1996 Ruby Brinegar, 89, Bedford, formerly of Kokomo, died at 1:10 a.m. Sunday at Westview Nursing and Rehab Center, Bedford, after a lengthy illness. Born in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Samual J. and Ida (Hicks) Hall. She married Dr. Harold F. Brinegar in 1940 and he survives. She was a school teacher in Lawrence and Monroe counties, a graduate of Oolitic High School and Central Normal College in Danville. She received her master's degree in education from Indiana University. She taught elementary school and taught English at Indiana University. She and her husband took Indiana University Education program to Thailand and continued their work there for four years. She was of Protestant faith. Surviving with her husband are one brother, John R. Hall of Bedford, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: Dewey S. Hall and E. Forrest Hall and two in infancy; two sisters: Dorothy Hall and Emma Chenault. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Day & Carter Mortuary, Bedford, with Bro. Michael Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Garden.

SATURDAY, JULY 13, 1974 BERTHA M. BROWN Mrs. Bertha M. Brown, 79, a resident of Heltonville and formerly of Leesville, died at 10:45 p.m. Friday at the Bedford Medical Center. She had been ill for the past year. She was born April 19, 1895, in Monroe County the daughter of James M. and Sarah Lutes Murphy. She was twice married, first to James Baldwin and later to Winton Brown, both deceased. Surviving are two sons, Berlin Murphy and Kenneth Baldwin both of R. 1 Norman; two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Mildred) Bailey of R. 1 Heltonville and Mrs. Curtis (Delpha) Clements of Cottonwood, Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. Lloyd (Irena) White of Heltonville and Mrs. Charles (Goldie) Maher of R. 6 Bedford; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She attended the Heltonville Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Jones Funeral Home in Heltonville and Rev. James Steven officiating. Friday, Oct. 18, 1940 WIDELY KNOWN FARMER DIES Elmer E. Brown, 72, Passes Away At Home Near City After Week's Illness Elmer E. Brown, prominent Lawrence county, farmer, died at his home and birthplace, five miles east of Bedford, at Brown's crossroads, on Highway 50, this morning at 6:35 o'clock. He was 72 years of age. Mr. Brown had been ill for the past week. A member of a highly prominent family in the community, he was the son of George and Hester Ann Brown, both natives of Indiana. He was never married. Living at the home place with him were one brother, Dave Brown, and two sisters, Misses Mary and Pearl Brown. He was a member of Erie Methodist church, where funeral services will be held Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock, the Rev. Elmer C. Norman and Rev. Harbin officiating. MONDAY, OCT. 21, 1940 ELMER BROWN FUNERAL HELD Local Farmer Laid To Rest In Erie Cemetery After Rites Sunday Funeral services for Elmer E. Brown were conducted from the Erie Methodist church, Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock, by the Rev. Elmer C. Norman and the Rev. Harbin. Mr. Brown, a prominent farmer, died at his home five miles east of this city, early Friday morning. The Erie Quartet, composed of Carl and Fred Younger, Everett Foster and Charles Lee, sang "Rock of Ages," "Home of the Soul," and "Only Remembered," during the rites. They were accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Fred Younger. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Josephine Shirley, Mrs. Lowell Davis, Miss Lela Stipp, Miss Helen Denny, Miss Rada McDermed, Miss Dorothy Mitchell, and Miss Katie Hoopingarner. Pallbearers were Harry Askew, John Peyton, Carl Spinks, Ezra Lynn, Cletus Fountaine and Fred Myers. A large throng of persons attended the rites. At the residence prior to the church servies, the Rev. Norman delivered a prayer and the quartet sang two selections, "Does Jesus Care?" and "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be." Burial was in Erie cemetery with Day-Carter & Roach in charge.

Saturday, Oct. 19, 1940 YOUNGSTER DIED OF LONG ILLNESS Raymond Earl Brown, son of Clifford and Thelma Jones Brown of this city, died at Dunn Memorial hospital this morning at 3:25 o'clock after an illness of four years. He was 13 years old. Raymond was born in Bedford Feb. 9, 1927. He was a member of the Free Methodist church of this city. The lad was a student in the sixth grade at Stalker school. Besides the parents, he leaves one sister, Helen Jean; three brothers, Clifford Jr., Joe and Bob Brown, all at home; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. David Brown of Leesville; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tenley of Indianapolis, and numerous other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted in Sherwood and Ferguson chapel Monday morning at 10 o'clock, by the Rev. Joe Black, pastor of the Free Methodist church. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery. The remains will lie in state at the chapel after 6 o'clock this evening.

Black Funeral services for Raymond Earl Brown were conducted from Sherwood & Ferguson chapel this morning at 10 o'clock, the Rev. Joseph C. Black, pastor of the Free Methodist church officiating. The lad passed away in Dunn hospital early Saturday morning. Mrs. Martha Davis, Mrs. Lola Potley, Mrs. Leona Myers and Charles Killian sang three selections during the rites. "Going Down The Valley," "Does Jesus Care?" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." They were accompanied by Gene Johnston at the organ. Flower bearers were Misses Vivian Pace, June Pace, Betty Robbins, Marjorie Webb, Mary Robbins, Mary Sipes and Edna Elliott. Pallbearers were John Sanders, John Weaver, Martin Robbins, Ed Lee, Carl Byers and Wilfred Robbins. Burial was in Green Hill cemetery.

Wednesday, August 3, 1910 MRS. BROWN DEAD Mother of Forrest Brown Died Last Night At Home Of Son In Gulfport, Miss. BURIAL AT INDIANAPOLIS FRIDAY Mrs. S. A. W. Brown, mother of Forrest Brown of this city, died at the home of her son, J. Q. Justice, at Gulfport, last night at 9 o'clock, following an illness of several months. Four or five months ago she was stricken with paralysis and had almost recovered from the stroke when she suffered a relapse a few days ago. Mrs. Brown was born in Fayette county and came to this city in 1863. She is widely known in this city, where she was engaged in the millinery business on the northwest corner of the public square for about twenty years. She made her home with her son Forrest, East 16th street, until about two years ago when she went to reside with another son, J. Q. Justice, by a former marriage, who resided at Gulfport, Miss. The body will be brought to Indianapolis, where the funeral services and interment will occur Friday.

Wednesday, May 27, 1931 BROWNING RITES OCCUR THURSDAY Services From Gilgal Church Near Heltonville At 2 P. M. Funeral services for William Jefferson Browning, 78, who died Tuesday forenoon at the home of his son, Fred Browning, near Heltonville, will be conducted from the Gilgal Church north of Heltonville at 2 p.m. Thursday with burial to follow in the Gilgal cemetery. He was one of the most prominent retired farmers of that community. While he had lived in this city for some time, prior to two months ago when the Fred Browning family took possession of the old home farm which Mr. Browning had acquired when his father had made a division of his estate upon his retirement from active work, practically all of his life had been spent in this community, and many years of his life in the home where he expired. He was born in this community December 25, 1853 to William and Mary Todd Browning. He was married in his early manhood to Miss Nancy E. Bridgewaters and to them were born seven children. Four of the children, Harry, 18 months, Alpha 3 years, Howard 34 and Henry, 53, have passed on, the two latter having met tragic deaths by accident. Surviving are Mrs. Myrtle Hawkins, Oscar and Fred Browning. Mr. Browning had been in failing health the past three years with hear(t) complications with his fatal illness lasting two weeks. He was familiarly known as "Uncle Billy" and was greatly beloved by his family, and highly respected by all who knew him.

FRIDAY, NOV. 22, 1940 WAR VETERAN PASSES AWAY Native of County Dies Thursday In Seymour Hospital After Operation Earl Bruce, 44-year-old World war veteran of Kurtz, passed away Thursday afternoon at 5:50 o'clock in Schneck Memorial hospital at Seymour, following an emergency appendectomy on Monday. A former stone man, Mr. Bruce was widely known in Lawrence county. He was the son of William and Ida Smallwood Bruce and a native of this county. He was born August 27, 1897. Mr. Bruce was first married to Violet Smithers, and later to Lula Moore, who survives. Beside the wife and the father, he leaves three sons and three daughters; one brother, Thruman Bruce of Oolitic; a step-sister, Eulalia Jones of Indianapolis; a step-brother, Erwin Jones, Peoria, Ill. Mr. Jones, who is associated with the Journal Transcript in Peoria, arrived here early today. The remains will be at the Thurman Bruce home in Oolitc this afternoon until three o'clock tomorrow, at which time they will be returned to Kurtz to lie in state until the funeral. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Samuel Walls from the Nazarene church in Kurtz at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The American Legion will hold military rites at the Kurtz cemetery.

Abram Buher
July 6, 1838 - July 21, 1913
WEDNESDAY, JULY 22, 1913 Abram Buher, grandfather of Mrs. Thomas Brinkworth, died Tuesday night at 9 o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lorene B. Faucett, Lincoln Avenue, after a lingering illness. For several days his condition had been exceedingly grave and death was not unexpected. He died of dysentery. He was born in Daviess County in 1837, and enlisted for duty as a solider during the Civil War. He was taken ill, however, before the Company left Terre Haute and owing to continues ill health, was discharged and returned home. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and the local post will havee charge of the funeral services. His wife died about seven years ago and for a long time he had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs Faucett. One son, Malcolm Buher, resides on North O Street and a daughter, Mrs William Carmichael also resides in this city. Funeral Services were conducted at Springville Thursday Morning at 10:30 o'clock. Burial was at Springville in the Christian Cemetery.

January 11, 1960 J. Burkhart Succumbs John B. Burkhart, 80-year-old retired stonecutter, passed away at 1:30 a.m. today at his residence, 2125 I Street. Mr. Burkhart had been in failing health several years, final illness the past five weeks. He was born February 1, 1879, in Brookviller, Germany, to Frederick and Catherine Burkhart Burkhart. He married Adelaide Schmitt on April 17, 1905, at Brooklyn, New York. Mr. Burkhart came to Brooklyn, New York, October 12, 1904, and early in 1909 moved to Bedford. He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic church and the Journeymen Stone Cutter's Union. Survivors include one son, Joseph Burkhart of Bedford; five daughters--Mrs. Walter Inman, Mrs. Theodore Neumeister, Mrs. Louis Liva and Mrs. Eugene Givens, all of Bedford, and Mrs. Fred Hutton, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Final rites are set for Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the pastor, Rev. Lawrence Weinzapfel, officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. The Rosary will be said at 8:00 p.m. today at the Ferguson & Branson Funeral Home. Friends may call at any time at the Ferguson & Branson Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

FRIDAY, FEB. 15, 1985 ROGER BURTON CICERO - Roger Burton, 72, Cicero, Ind. formerly of Mitchell, died Thursday in Riverview Hospital in Noblesville. He was born Oct. 21, 1912, in Lawrence County, to Douglas and Mazzie Ann Edwards Burton. He had been owner of New Augusta Lumber Company in New Augusta until his retirement in 1973. Survivors include his wife, the former Elizabeth Blackman; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Kathryn) Nolan, Mitchell, and Mrs. Garrett (Wilma) Fisher, Kokomo.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mitchell. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Flanner and Buchanan Mortuary Carmel Mortuary. Graveside rites will be at 2 p.m.. Monday at Burton Cemetery west of Mitchell. Local information was by Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 1973 Edward Everett Butterfield, 82, National Health Enterprise Nursing Home and former resident of 1316 Third street, died at 8:00 p.m. Monday at National Health Enterprise. He had been ill several months. He was a retired employee of the Bedford Foundry and Machine Company. He was born in Salem January 15, 1819 (1891), son of Oscar and Johanna Gorman Butterfield, and was twice married, first to Maggie Hart in early life who died Nov. 20, 1926, and to Lola Lewis in 1929 who died in 1958. Surviving are one stepson, Robert Lewis, Bedford; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Russell (Mary Helen) Grove, Bedford; six step-grandchildren, five step-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Frank and Charles, a step-daughter, Delpha, and one step-son, Spencer, precede him in death. He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Bedford. Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, Rev. Herman Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Friends may call after 6:00 p.m. today at the funeral home.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1945 BYERS FUNERAL SERVICE MONDAY Funeral services for Harry Byers, 58, resident at 225 Lafayette street in Oolitic, who died at 4:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at Dunn Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted Friday night, were held at the Elmwood Chapel of the Day-Carter & Roach funeral home at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon with the Rev. E. J. Yorger, of Lafayette, former pastor of the Bedford First Presbyterian Church and Rev. Paul Sherrill, present pastor of the church officiating. Rev. Yorger intoned the hymns, "O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go" and "My Faith Looks Up To Thee," and Mrs. Clement Adams, chapel organist, rendered "Pilgrim's Chorus," by Wagner, and "Going Home", by Dvorak during the services. Floral tributes were in charge of Pauline Thompson, Mary Alice Cheeks and Betty Anderson. Pall bearers were Walter Giles, Ray Mitchell, Harlan Carmichael, Albert Armstrong, O. O. Hall, Homer Hudson, Bret Carmichael and Elva Henderson. Burial was made in the Springville Christian cemetery. A native of Oolitic, Mr. Byers was born to Lincoln and Jennie Giles Byers on June 11, 1866. He married Mary Gray on June 15, 1908, who preceded him in death February 15, 1932. He formerly engaged in agricultural pursuits and was employed as a quarry worker. He recently had been employed at the Crane Naval Ammunition Depot. He had been ill the past six weeks. He belonged to the Oolitic Church of Christ. He is survived by three childrn, Lt. Gordon Byers, now serving in the U.S. Army in Germany; Richard, at home, and Mrs. Horace Duncan, Oolitic; three grandchildren, and a brother, Dr. Norman R. Byers, Brook Knoll. A daughter, Pauline, preceded him in death at the age of six years.
