FAMILY NEAR BEDFORD DRIVEN BAREFOOTED INTO SNOW BY FIRE

Members of the family of James P. Martin, who reside five miles southwest of Bedford, had a narrow escape from cremation when their house burned early Saturday morning. Mr. Martin started a fire, went to a barn some distance away, and then saw that his home was in flames. The fire made such headway before he could get back to warn his family that they were compelled to flee from the house in their bare feet and night clothes. Neighbors came to their rescue and no serious consequences are expected. The house and contents were a total loss. A defective flue is blamed for the fire. No insurance was carried.
