The 1940 U. S. Census
The 1940 Census was made available for public inspection on April 2, 2012, by the U.S. Census Bureau and National Archives and Records Administration. NARA placed all images on line for free browsing via the Internet.
It is possible to search for your ancestors at a number of sites on line, including:
- NARA, where you may view census images which are indexed only by location, and,
- at least two sites where the entire census is indexed, so that you may search for individuals by name:
When you locate your family in the 1940 census, we urge you to view the images where their information was recorded by the enumerators, and to come to your own conclusions. In many cases, the handwriting of the census takers is hard to decipher and may or may not be transcribed correctly by the volunteers who have entered data for indexing.
