Note from: Nathan Machula - At least three of the four Wobith family graves were children of my great-great grandparents, August Ferdinand Wobith (1843-1922) and Wilhelmina (Mittelstaedt) Wobith (1843-1903). The other grave, Wilhelmina Wobith, I'd guess is actually Wilhelmina (Arndt) Mittelstaedt (b. 1818), who immigrated to America with them, and died sometime before 1900. I took multiple pictures of all of them this summer, but the only one I could positively identify was Ernst A Wobith. The last digit looks more like a 9 than a 7.
The family lived in Cass township in the 1880 US Census, but moved to Starke county by 1900. Both August and Wilhelmina Wobith are buried there in Bass Lake Lutheran Community Cemetery. They only had two children survive to adulthood, Otto C Wobith (1872-1945), who still has descendants in North Judson, and my great grandmother, Emaline Marie Wobith (1884-1971).Anyone wishing to donate burial or family tree information about families in this or any LaPorte County cemetery, please contact us at laportecountyin@yahoo.com
(2.4 miles south of Hwy. 30 on 900W) This cemetery attests to the German heritage of Wanatah and the surrounding community. The Cemetery, so named because the Nickel Plate tracks (New York, Chicago and St. Louis) adjoin the lot, is about two well-kept acres. Many of the pre-1920's tombstones are inscribed in German, a practice dropped along with the use of that language in religious services because of anti-German sentiment during the first World War.Disclaimer: This cemetery listing was done by a volunteer group who went out and recorded the location of plots and individuals buried there. Notes added under "Additional Comments" column contain both personal notes added by transcriber at cemetery site and some tombstone readings. Listings have been entered alphebetically for this cemetery. Ref: Cemetery Records of LaPorte County, Indiana Vol. IV and Miriam Benedict Chapter, NSDAR
