Maple Grove Cemetery Tour 2012
Hudson
Township
La Porte
County, Indiana
Compiled by Gloria Arndt
The Maple Grove Cemetery
was described in an earlier description as having a slightly spooky
atmosphere,
perhaps because it is surrounded by maple and cedar trees and not much
light
enters the cemetery giving it a rather dark appearance.
There are two veterans
of the War of 1812, seven Civil War veterans, and one Spanish American War
veteran buried in the cemetery.
Veterans from World War I and World War II are
also represented.
The Maple Grove Methodist
Church was established in 1868. The cemetery sits behind and to the east side
of the church.
The Church and the Cemetery are separate associations. The Maple
Grove Cemetery Association was established in 1895.
The seal of the
association
show a tomb, a stream of water, willow and vine and the words “Seal of The
Maple Grove Cemetery Association.”
The board of the association
consists of
seven members to be elected annually. The board set aside a portion of
the
cemetery for the burial of
persons unable to purchase a grave.
The earliest
tombstone is dated 1847. The land the cemetery is located on is not
over two
acres and was donated by William Thomas.
He also donated the land for the
church. Mr. Thomas is one of the Civil War veterans buried in the
cemetery.
Originally the lots sold
for $5.00 per lot. There were five graves to a lot. The cemetery is
still open
for burials.
