OBITUARY:

The Acorn, Three Oaks, MI, Feb. 5, 1904, P. 7

Milina Barnes was born in Onondago Co., N.Y., March 17, 1830, and departed this life January 29, 1904, at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 12 days. At the age of nine years she came with her parents to Ind. And made her home with them, on the farm about six miles north of Rolling Prairie, until she was married to Ezra H. Barnes May 15, 1851. With her husband and two step-sons, George Barnes of Calif., and James Barnes of Rolling Prairie, she settled on a farm about one and one-half miles south of her old home, where she shared the joys and burdens of like with her companion until his demise in May 1882, and where she resided almost a half century. Her union with Ezra H. Barnes was blessed by the birth of three daughters, Mrs. M. B. Thomas of Calif., now deceased, Mrs. Frank Tappan of New Carlisle and Mrs. G. C. White of Waterford, Ind., both of whom, with three brothers of deceased, Albert Barnes of Three Oaks, Mich., and Leonard and Wesley Barnes of Atlantic City, Ia., together with other relatives, remain to honor her memory.

In 1896 she was married to Charles Young of Ohio.

Her parents were members of the M. E. Church and she was a regular attendant at that church until ill health and old age overtook her.

Three years ago she removed to New Carlisle, where she kept her own home until four weeks before death claimed her, when she sustained a second strike of paralysis from which she never recovered. She was at once taken to her daughter's home where willing hands of relatives and neighbors ministered to her until in the quiet of the evening hour and in the evening of her earth-journey, surrounded by her two daughters and others dear to her, her restless spirit winged its flight.

The funeral service was held at 1:30 January 31, at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Frank Tappan after, which interment was made in the Rolling Prairie cemetery.

BIOGRAPHY ON JAMES A. BARNES:

A Twentieth Century History and Biographical Record of LaPorte County,

Indiana

Rev. E.D. Daniels, Illustrated, 1904, Page 789

His son, Ezra H. Barnes, the father of James A. Barnes, was a native

of Onondaga county, New York, and about 1836 came to LaPorte county,

locating in Galena township, where he improved a farm, first clearing

the land of the timber with which it was covered. This tract of land

was on section 25, and he soon built a log cabin, in which the family

lived in true pioneer style, while he further continued the work of

developing his property. He was engaged in the sawmill business in

partnership with Samuel P. Southerland for many years. In 1849 he

went to California, attracted by the discovery of gold in that state,

and for a year remained on the Pacific slope. Returning then to

Indiana, he spent his remaining days in LaPorte county, was a

life-long Democrat and in matters of citizenship was progressive,

earnestly desiring the welfare of the county and aiding in its

progress along many lines. His wife bore the maiden name of Catherine

Blaney, and was born near Dayton, Ohio. She died when very young,

passing away on the 8th of September, 1847, at the age of twenty-two

years.

Irvin D. Barnes

One of Three Oaks' Leading Citizens Answers Last Call

When the word went around that Irvin D. Barnes was down with influenza everyone remarked that he would soon be over it. When later it was reported that pneumonia had developed more concern was felt but still all persisted in believing that he would throw it off and speedily recover. He was so strong and energetic that few expected anything save a rapid and complete recovery.

When the news was told that he had failed to rally and had passed on to his reward, the shock was all the greater. Gone, our old friend "Chub" Barnes - he was "Chub" to every friend, the good old nickname that showed how he was liked, --the close name that pulls at the heartstrings as it is repeated now.

Always he was ready to help at this or at that. His last effort a response to a call to duty. Among the last of his offerings were sales for the Red Cross and work on the Fourth Liberty Loan. In this he had a place on the county committee, a court which adjudged the validity of those who bought less than their share of bonds.

In all he did "Chub" Barnes was earnest and energetic. During the many years of his life he built up a reputation in his chosen line that places him as peer to all. No man in this section of the state has the record of crying so many successful sales and at such satisfactory prices as Mr. Barnes.

Irvin D. Barnes was born May 24, 1868, in LaPorte County, Indiana. When he was twenty-four years of age he removed to Three Oaks. I was early in life that he took up the work of auctioneering, which he followed with such success up to almost the very day of his death. He worked both in Michigan and Indiana and his years of effort developed methods and abilities which were the envy of all his brother auctioneers.

Later he started in the livery business in Three Oaks beginning in a small way and enlarging from time to time until for a number of years he did a splendid business. In more recent years he took up the veterinary line and disposed of the livery business.

On September 21, 1901 he was united in marriage to Miss Donna Jones of Three Oaks. To this union two sons were born, Harold and Kenneth. He was a fine specimen of the best of American manhood, faithful in his home as husband and father, and a kind and loving disposition.

He was always ready to respond to the call of duty or to assist in any work; his active work in the Red Cross and on other charitable and benevolent enterprises is known to all. "Ask Barnes to help," was frequently heard. His death will be a sad blow not only in his home but to the whole community.

His death took place Oct. 17, 1918 and the funeral was held on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 20. It was private and the Rev. M. A. Oldt of the M. E. Church officiated.

Burial took place at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

The loss of the wife and sons is also the loss of Three Oaks and the village is one with tem in their sorrow. Sympathy from all can do little to soften the blow. He is missed and will be missed more that can be told.
