Notes for TRUMAN BARNES:
There is a discrepancy on the mother of Truman Barnes. The death record states Elizabeth Wermer, the doctor's record (which is where the information came from for the death record) states Elizabeth We???r, which could be Weimer or Weaver (from Bob Myers at the Berrien Co. Historical Association), and other researchers have Rebecca Weaver. I wonder if Elizabeth and Rebecca are one and the same person, but futher research is needed to prove who his mother was. At this time I am using the death record for the name of Truman's mother, but that can change once futher information is obtained.

War Vet and Raccoon Become Business Partners
Three Oaks, Mich. - A pet raccoon and a disabled World War II Veteran have formed a working partnership at 9 Featherbone Ave. in Three Oaks.
William Habel, senior member of the firm in charge of production is ably assisted by Hobby, year-old raccoon, "vice-president" and chief morale booster.
"Hobby isn't much assistance as he pokes an inquistive nose in the glue pot, fancies an occasional lick in the shellac or wants to play when there's work to be done, but as a companion he's great," Habel says.
The 'partnership' has fashioned handmade magazine racks, cigarette dispensers, spice shelves, pipe racks and other woodworking novelties. A recent innovation is a three-dimensional picture that may be electrically illuminated. All items show the results of careful craftmanship and patient industry.
Habel, 40, served as crew schief in the Air Corps for 44 months. During his 36-month tour of duty in the European theater, he met his attractive wife, Peg.
A year after returning to his home in Three Oaks, Peg and their son Michael, were able to join him. Michael, 9, and Brian, 6, now are avid jigsaw carpentry fans.
Seriously injured in an automobile accident four years ago, Bill is confined to his wheel chair. A starving four-month-old raccoon was found by a friend who hoped nursing the sickly animal back to health would help appease the painfulness of Bill's recovery.
Although Peg is chief wage earner of the family at present, the Habel-Hobbly parnership is hoping to increase its marketing power and production rate.
"And some day, I'll walk," Habel adds hopefully.

Galien Man Journeys Road of Life Atop Wagon
Now and then we meet individuals who like simplicity in life, with tasks done in an efficient, honest fashion, and with pleasures experienced by gracing others' lives with neighborly gestures and displays of talent.
Galien resident, Leland Habel, 61, is just such a person. He likes to make work or play more like an event reather than a passing moment by, as he puts it, "Doing things the old way".
Habel has established a distinguished identity in many respects. One of the most fundamental ways is the farming he does at his home of Cleveland Avenue, just south of U.S. 12. The multi-purpose horses he raises are the locomotion for pulling devices for plowing, manure spreading, planting, cultivating, and so on to harvest time.
Harvest is no exception to this straightforward approach as Habel husks his main crop, corn, by hand. A couple of horses instinctively know how fast to pull a wooden trailer into which Habel steadily tosses ear after ear.
However, Habel considers working the land a hobby. He worked for many years as a truck driver for Strefling Oil and Gas Transport but retired last year due to an injury.
The horse-drawn approach also is the essence of other aspects of Habel's life.
One aspect is best described by Habel: "If there's been a parade in lower Michigan, I've been in it." Habel rides parade routes with two or four of his Welch ponies pulling him and a pleasing-to-the-eye hitch wagon made of a glossy mahogany which reflects the craftsmanship of its New Carlisle maker.
He has paraded as such for many years, including at the Bridgman Memorial Day parade in the 1960s, the Blossomtime parade in St. Joseph, and many others.
Many awards have gone to Habel for his horse-wagon showmanship. At the 1986 Cass County Fair, he received a trophy for being selected as the Grand Champion for the Heavy Harness Pony Hitch category; and he received a trophy for winning the Apple Barrel Award for the 14th Annual (1986) Apple Festival in Niles.
In fact, Habel has been chosen as Reserve and Grand Champion for the Hitch classes for the last six years at fairs in the counties of Cass, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Allegan, and Branch.
When asked, "How do you win all the time?", he replies with an air of certainty, "It's like the 100-yard dash. You have to practice everyday to be prepared. I do the same thing with the horses."
While many would be content to limit horse-wagon use to parades or fairs, Habel is imaginative and immediately channels his energy to thoughtful pursuits to spice up his community. Whether his ponies pull a wagon in warm weather or a sleigh in the winter, he can often be seen riding toward Galien and giving rides to the many children who love this mode of transportation.
"When I start my ride toward Galien," says Habel, "I'll pick up a few (kids) then a few more, and then before you know it, the wagon's full."
Telltale of his concern for childrens' happiness, Habel spells out the reason for giving kids rides by saying, "I'd walk a mile to see a kid smile."
Another hat Habel wears is that of Santa Claus. He said he had portrayed the jolly man of the north for about 20 years, going to area hospitals such as Berrien General (Berrien Center) and Visitors (Formerly Unity in Buchanan) -- via horse and sleigh.
Over the years, Habel's Amish -like style of travel has taken him on much longer sojourns in 1976, on the Bicentennial Wagon Train, he and his wife, Rosanna journeyed with a large entourage from LaPorte, Ind., all the way to Valley Forge, Penn. -- round trip of roughly 1,400 miles.
But the route to Pennsylvania wasn't without complications as Habel suffered a broken leg on the way there, had a cast put on, stayed for three days at Valley Forge, and headed back, ending up in the office of a South Bend doctor.
His wife kept a daily diary of events, locales and mileage to chronicle their experiences.
Habel now cherishes a book from the trip to preserve the decade-old memory. The hardcover, imprinted with the title "Bicentennial Wagon Train Pilgrimage", tells the story of all who participated and includes many photos, including a profile shot of Habel with others from the trip in the background.
The book can be found on the shelves of many libraries Habel noted.
The wheels didn't stop at this point. Besides escorting newlyweds atop his wagon occasionally, Habel also escorted three members of the PM Magazine TV show three years ago on a fact-finding tour. Part of this tour was filmed for use on a southwestern Michigan feature the TV show aired soon after.
The trip with the PM crew started in Baroda where Habel enjoyed a film and meal at Bill's Tap and Restaurant. They then rode to the Tabor Hill winery and back to Baroda.
Habel also partakes in an annual get-together at Nottawa, Mich. (just north of Sturgis). Last year his ponies pulled him there to meet 21 other wagons and 47 outriders (individual horse and mule riders) for a pig and corn roast. The event, which Habel has attended for many years, is a weekend-long celebration of friendship and a common interest in leaving automobiles at home.
One may not be surprised that Habel has also been to places like Bremen, Ind., to visit the Amish community. "I've always told my wife that if we ever move, I'd sell everything we own, move to Amish country, get me a good wagon and enjoy the slower lifestyle," he relates, adding, "Too many people these days have to get things done right now. There's no sense in hurrying. You're going to get yourself to the grave fast enough."
Undaunted by the fact that he is battling cancer -- a fight he has won in the past -- Habel intends to persevere. Now that he's retired, he plans on doing all the riding he can and says he is "going to ride in the sesquicentennial no matter what."
The Michigan Sesquicentennial includes a two-month wagon procession that starts in Lansing and tours the central and southern part of the state.
Even though he loves the adventure of long trips, Habel reflects, with feelings that make him teary-eyed, that his greatest love is the simple act of giving a child a ride and enjoyment.
He has five children of his own. Three girls: Jane Gaul of Berrien Springs; Judy Norris of Niles; and Jackie Zilke, who owns Zilke's Nursery in Baroda. His two sons, Tom and Tim live in Galien and drive trucks like their father once did.
Social Security Records show birth date as April 25, 1925, the family says and celebrated April 23, 1925. The family also states that his birth certificate is incorrect, date should April 23, 1925.
Age at death 64yrs.
