Branson Davis Parker Husband: Notes

Branson was born in Ohio and when his parents moved west in 1833, he moved with them. At first he lived with them in Indiana, then to Illinois where his father died. He was still living with his mother, along with his future wife, Ann, in the 1840 Illinois census. He married Ann in 1843 and sometime after his marriage moved back to Indiana. In 1850 he was in Porter County, Indinia. He died while living in the county.

Branson and Ann moved to la Porte between the years of 1844, after James M. was born and before school in 1846. Elizabeth could have been born in either Illinois or Indiana. Ann was attending school in La Porte in 1846.

He is buried at Eight Square Cemetery which is located half way between Michigan City and Westville, both in Porter County.

In 1959 the stones were there near John Storm, his wife, John Wolford, and Andrew J. Thompson. Branson's stone was gone in 1975, but the other stones were still there.

The 1850 census (name listed as Brunson Parker) indicates his value of real estate to be $500.

Branson, 30, farmer, Ohio; Ann, 21, Ohio; (the age here must be wrong, all data indicates she should be 24.

James M., 7, Illinois; Joshua M., 4, Indiana; Winfield (William W)., 2, Indiana; Edward Haymond, 19, Laborer, Indiana.

James attended school within the year. The census had Winfield listed, but, it must by William W, the age and birthplace match.

The name Branson seems to indicate a contact with the Swedish nation, rather than the Danish. If the first part of that name is spelled Bran it shows a Celtic origin for the Bran of the old Celtic language means Hill. If would indicate Gallic origin if spelled Bryn or Bryan. If spelled Bron it would be Armovic. The Welsh spell it Bran, Bryn, or Bron. They are suppose to be descendants of King Bran or Branins as the Roman called him. (Comments of D. T. Davis).

Ann Davis Foster Wife: Notes

It appears that Ann was partly raised by William and Elizabeth. This is per Thomas Andrew Parker. The reason for this was that her father and grandmother had died. Ann would have been about fourteen at that time. She married Branson at 18.

Ann Davis Foster was about 20 years older than Elizabeth Davis. They could have been related, great aunt, 2nd or 3rd cousin.

While in LaPorte 1846, it appears Ann, at the age of 20, did attend school. she was listed as the only person in Branson home that was attending.

Ann and Branson moved to la Porte between the years of 1844, after James M. was born and before school in 1846. Elizabeth could could have been born in either Illinois or Indiana.

The 1860 Indiana Census showed the following household members: Ann, 34, Ohio; James, 19, farmer, Illinois; Joshua M., 13, Indiana; William, 11, Indiana; Thomas, 9, Indiana; and Emma, 4, Indiana. All had attended school the past year. The value of real estate was listed as $2,000 and personal property was $300.

Ann married Levi Simmons after the 1860 census. The first person to be buried in Star Cemetery, located four miles north, one mile west of Mt Hope, Kansas. A note mentions Ann visiting her sister Ruth Foster Markley and the visit was witnessed and documented in the note by the wife of Jonathan Foster.

I have two letters written, about 1870, by Ann Foster Parker Simmons. One is signed as Ann Simmons, one to Bella Foster and one to Birdie. Both letters were mailed to Bella Foster in care of T. C. Foster in Tonica, La Salle Co., Illinois. In the letters, there is mention of Birdie, Mirty, Bella, Will, Tommie, Jimmie, and Joshua. There is also a mention of Joe. Who is Joe and Birdie?

In the 1870 census for Gardner, Johnson Co., Kansas, the following:

James Parker, 26 , Farm Laborer, Illinois; Joshua, 22, farm laborer, Indiana

Ann Simmons, 44, keeping house, Ohio.

Checked the probate papers for Benjamin Foster in Fulton County, Illinois. There was no mention of Ann Foster Parker.

Most of the information had to do with the administrator not doing his job and people filing complaints against the estate.

James Marion Parker Child: Notes

There are several notes related to the children of James M. and Elizabeth Wimp. One by Myrtle Parker (Horn), gives husbands of his daughters. One of the Daughters, filled out a pedigree chart saying she married someone else. Some work needs to be done here.

James Marion Parker was born in Fulton County Illinois March 18, 1844, He moved to Indiana when just a baby with his parents, Branson D. and Ann Foster Parker, where he lived until the age of 19 when he enlisted in Company F-7th Indiana

Cavalry for 3 years or until the end of the civil war. During that time he was in 17 battles and many skirmishes. The battles were: Okolona, Miss; Raleigh, Tenn.; Guntown,Miss.; Port Gibson, Miss.; Grand Gulf, Miss.; Verona, Miss. Egypt,

Miss.; Baliner, Tenn,.; Hatchie River, Miss. ; Hurricane Creek, Miss,; Oxford, Miss.; LaMavoo, Miss.; Bastrop, La.; Independence, Mo.; Big Blue, Mo.; Little Osaqe, Mo.; and Mine Creek, Kansas..

In the 1870 census for Gardner, Johnson Co., Kansas, the following:

James Parker, 26 , Farm Laborer, Illinois;
Joshua, 22, farm laborer, Indiana
Ann Simmons, 44, keeping house, Ohio.

A letter written by James's brother Joshua's wife, indicates Jim was in Burrton in 1874 and losing his crops to the grasshopper horde.

1880 Census;

His parents were born in Ohio/Illinois. No children yet of this marriage.

1900 census:

His parents were born in Ohio/Ohio

1910 census, only 3 children still at home. Also his farm is next door to his son, Branson.

Joshua Milton Parker Child: Notes

A letter states that Uncle Josh worked for William Brayton during the Civil War.

An article written by Mrs. Josh Parker of Burrton, Kansas

Concerning her husband's coming to Kansas

Joshua Parker came to Kansas from La Porte, Indiana in 1869, and filed on a homestead. His first choice was what is now the corner of Main and Douglas in Wichita. He finally decided to go on further west, however, and finally settled in Harvey County, Lake Township, Section 30 Township 24, Range 3 West. He came with two yokes of oxen and a pony, drove to

Emporia for lumber and put up a small house, half of it sod but with a good shingle roof. He fixed it up so he could come back to it every six months to batch, then went to Johnson Co. to work. This was his life for two years. When he came back he put up a very comfortable house, broke prairie and went to farming. He put out spring wheat and had a bunch of hogs. He had fine crops and batched till he brought his mother out to join him in 1872. She was in very poor health and soon passed away and was the first one to be buried in Star Cemetery, south of Burrton.

There was a rattle-snake and prairie dog town right south-east of his place and plenty of coyotes. buffaloes, prairie chickens and some gray wolves and wild turkeys. At that time there were only five trees to be seen and they were five miles down the Big Arkansas River. At one time, in 1872, since there was no place for recreation, dances were held at Jimmy Mc Murry's place down on the Big Arkansas. He went to the dance one night and didn't get started home till about twelve o'clock. He had no way of knowing where he was going and it was a dark and stormy night but, off in the distance he could make out five objects. He took these to be his four oxen and pony so kept on going till he felt he should have reached his own place. Soon, he came to the river and the five trees. Then only did he know where he was and started back. It was well along toward morning before he reached home and I guess he didn't try any more dances.

In 1873, I came with my father and mother and their family to find a home in Kansas. Having come from Kentucky. My father, William Harmon, homesteaded in Reno Co., six miles north and three west of the Parker place. Wesley Greenfield homesteaded one mile west of the Parker place. The two men would come, together, to see my sister Fannie and me. They came with horses hitched to a big wagon and took us to Literaries and singing school at Van Sickle school.

On Feb. 26, 1874 Josh and I were married by Sam Woodward Justice of the Peace, there being no minister here at that time. We had for our wedding supper buffalo steak and prairie chickens. Our house being rather small, we were married in the Van Sickle school house. I think all living now that were there that night are Emma Matlack of Reno Co. and Lucy Elder. I saw many wild animals after coming to this country, and had the pleasure of shooting prairie chickens and seeing buffaloes running past the door.

In 1879 a Baptist preacher came to the community. I don't remember his first name but we all called him Father Camp. He was quite an old man. By that time cottonwoods had grown to a pretty good size so John Shive, Dr. Hunt and my husband put up poles on the Pete Mc Geachy place and covered them with branches to provide shelter for preaching. Everyone turned out and we had some wonderful meetings there, till the Star School was built. We had church in the school house till the

Friendship Baptist Church was organized and a building put up. My sister Fannie Greenfield, was a charter member in this church.

1874 was the year of the grasshoppers. Many of Jim Parker's crops and our own were a total loss. Our only warning of the grasshoppers was a black cloud of them, which we thought at first was a rain cloud. Afterwards dead grasshoppers were piled up six inches deep along the side of our house. The grasshopper raid and loss of crops caused much want, and relief was sent in from other places. Dried fruit and corn were the principal foods sent in and the amount to a family was determined by the number of children in the family. The distribution Center was at Lake School. Clothing, as well as food, was sent in - some off contributions, of course. The most ridiculous, in this case, was a silk smoking jacket.

In 1883 a diphtheria epidemic descended on the community, lasted all summer and fall and took at least one child from every or nearly every family in the community. We lost one little son. (PGD0153)

In the 1870 census for Gardner, Johnson Co., Kansas, the following:
James Parker, 26 , Farm Laborer, Illinois;
Joshua, 22, farm laborer, Indiana
Ann Simmons, 44, keeping house, Ohio.

The 1880 and 1900 census lists parents' birthplace as Ohio and Illinois

1900 census: (month/year of birth), age, martial status, yrs married,

Charlie W., son, 18, single, farm laborer
Nina E., daughter, 15, single
Jaunita E, daughter 15, single,
Willis K. Helton, hired hand, 34, single, farm laborer.

The Burrton Graphic newspaper carried an advertisement that Joshua Parker was selling off his farm and moving to Oregon.

The date of the public auction was March 4, 1919. Apparently he didn't ever move to Oregon, since he died in 1932 in Burrton.

The 1920 census:
Joshua, 72, retired
Martha, 66,
Brayton, 30, Barber, Barber Shop.

There is a conflict on parent's birthplace per Thomas and Joshua statement of where their parents were born. Joshua states Ohio and Illinois while Thomas states in Indiana/Indiana. The other records indicate both were born in Ohio.

William Wesley Parker Child: Notes

The source documents indicate William's middle name as Winfield or Wesley. Since one document is typed and has Wesley on it, used that name.

1870 census; William is staying with his mother's brother, Thomas Cone Foster, at this time. A letter by his mother also indicates Thomas is in the neighborhood, but, he hasn't been found.

Thomas Andrew Parker Child: Notes

He, along with 26 other men, served on the first jury in Woods Co., OK. new Courthouse. 1880 census:

Parents birthplace is Ohio/Illinois; is a farmer. and has one child at this time. Mary's name is hard to read but looks like Mary S. H.

1920 Census

Thomas=owned and mortgaged his home, is 68 B; Indiana, Father= Indiana, Mother = Indiana and is a farmer on a small farm, owned.

There is a conflict on the 1920 census on parent's birthplace per his and Joshua statement of where their parents were born.

Joshua states Ohio and Illinois while Thomas states in Indiana/Indiana. The other records indicate both were born in Ohio.

Per some letters, Tom and William drove cattle along the Chisholm Trail from Kansas to Texas. On one of those trips, he met Mary Hardin Cox and married her. They lived in Gainesville for about 4 years before moving back to Harvey co., Kansas. After several children were born, they moved to Kiowa Co., Kansas around 1886. Milton was born in Greensburg. He freighted from here to places north for a few years. Far enough to have to be gone overnight. In the spring of 1887, they moved to no man's land (what is probably now Beaver Co., Oklahoma Territory. Raymond and Myrtle were born in this county. William Wesley, his brother lived close by. In 1891, he sold out and moved back to Kansas. On Sept. 16, 1893, he made the run to Oklahoma. Their last child, Carl was born in Alva, Woods Co., Oklahoma Territory.
