This first memo concerns my relatives descendant from Polly Thomas and
her son Henry 5
(the numeral designating generation). Feom the desk of
Bob Teeter
Zacariah (4) - Polly and the 10 children of Polly and Zachariah 4
Teeter
(the latter died before the first of them came to IN), all listed on
the Polly Mary Thomas memorial in Rolling Prairie.
In NY Zachariah did not
have Abraham as a first name. In Indiana the name given as Abraham Zachariah is
that of the son of Polly who in New York was baptized and known simply as
Zachariah..All baptisms of Polly, her husband and children were found by my
brother Phillip and the writer in NY baptismal records.
Henry was often
known in Indiana as Henry L.. Teeter, but in the Teeter Cemetery he's just
Henry Teeter.
He married Caroline Fail (is she listed in an A to M section
not found by the writer?).
Henry and Caroline are buried at Teeter Cemetery. Their children
were:
1. Sarah "Sally" Teeter, born about 1837 (whose husband was Rev.
Daniel A. Grimes, as we spell it with an S, but we have often seen it without
the s), buried he Teeter Cemetery..
2. Philip Fail Teeter, born about 1839,
mortally wounded September 19, 1863 at Iuka, MS - dying the next day, later
re-buried at Corinth, also a Veterans Marker at Teeter
Cemetery..
Note from Webmaster, Deanna West - Philip F. Teeter
enlisted as a Private on February 17, 1862 into Company D, 48th Infantry
Regiment Indiana .
3. George Henry Teeter, born April 5, 1841, unmarried,
died April 23 , 1925, Teeter Cemetery.
4. Edwin Jordan Teeter {grandfather
of the writer), born Jan.7, 1843, married Emily Ann Ocker,
daughter of
Henry Ocker, died November 4, 1932, buried at Rolling Prairie
5. Mary
ATeeter, born 1848, died 1854, buried in Teeter Cemetery I will try a similar
memo for Zachariah 5 soon.
Zachariah (5) - In this second memo Bob Teeter deals with the family of Polly Thomas and her son Zachariah, Jr.who is listed among her children on the Memorial at Rolling Prairie, IN.
Neither Philip Teeter (my brother) nor I (Robert Teeter, the writer) had any family recognition through the lives of even our cousins and aunts who lived in LaPorte or Rolling Praire most recently, of the close and nearby relative, Zachariah .
However, in our research in Indiana vital records and census records we recognized his name on deeds, maps, etc. When Curtis asked some questions, were ready to look anew at resources. I am pleased to see your cemetery records now before us. I see that the Zachariah who was born in NY on October 17, 1804 and died on December 2, 1894, according to our file, fits the Rolling Prairie Cemetery list as the brother of Henry 5, both being sons of Zachariah 4 and Polly Mary Thomas who, with her 10 children, was memorialized in stone by her great grandson long after her death
On my printout of the Rolling Prairie Cemetery listing, page 17 of 24, Francis Teeter is Francis Russell, 1st wife of Zachariah 5. William is son of Zachariah 5 and Frances. Martha Teeter is Martha Van Orden, 2nd wife of Zachariah 5 Renwick Teeter is son of Zachariah 5 and Martha. Frances Teeter is Frances Conant 1st wife of Renwick. Roxanna Teeter is 2nd wife of Renwick. Walter Teeter is son of Zachariah 5 and Martha Please tell me if I have it wrong. Regards to all., Bob
From the desk of Bob Teeter - For review and posting.
This memo is likewise focused primarily on two sons of Polly Mary
Thomas, whose husband Zachariah Teeter died in Colombia County, New York,.prior
to the relocation of Polly and several sons and daughters to Galena Township,
LaPorte County Co., Indiana. Polly lived with her youngest son Henry from about
1834 or in a year or two thereafter. His older brother, also named Zachariah,
lived nearby.
A rectangular Marker stone in Rolling Prairie Cemetery
identifies Polly, her Husband Zachariah, and their 10 children by name: the two
sons noted above, also sons John, Ralph and Jacob, and daughters Hannah and
Sarah, all of whom came to LaPorte or nearby, and three others who did not.
Named on an obelisk in Rolling Prairie Cemetery is "Zachariah Teeter
1805 - 1894". This is the older brother. On another obelisk panel are "Frances
Wife of Z. Teeter 1813-1839" and "Martha Wife of Z. Teeter 1816 -1887 ". On
another obelisk are his sons William and Walter, identified as serving in the
Civil War.
The Reunion clipping refers to Hannah Teeter Austin and to
Sarah Teeter Austin. The Austin name appears near the Teeter name on maps of
Galena The clipping speaks of the reunion dinner call being sounded on a conch
shell used at the Thomas hotel (home of Polly Mary Thomas during the
revolutionary war). This writer was asked if he knew what became of the Conch.
Answer: a member of Sally Teeter's family had it, and gave it to Edwin J.
Teeter (son of Henry Teeter, keeping it in the Teeter family), then to his
youngest son, then to my brother William, who has to this day. The clipping
also notes that Edwin J. Teeter was elected President of the Reunion society or
the following year.

There were Teeter reunions held in South Bend, IN each summer over a 50 year span. These were quite well attended. For example, there are 82 relatives in the 1939 Reunion photograph. Paul Engle and Curtis Parks, descendants of Harvey V., have identified 37 people in that photo, and would like to know of others that attended that Reunion.
