John "Jacob" Snavely was born about 1717 and died around 1790 in Montgomery County., VA at the age of 73. John died in testate about 1790 and Peter Snavely was executor of John's Estate. One of John "Jacob" Snavely's sons was also named John and he was born between 1750 and 1760 in Montgomery Co., VA. For John's second marriage he married Elizabeth Martin on 28 Dec 1816 within the same county. John died about 1833 in Montgomery Co., VA. ""Snavely War." William Crawford located upon of the these Indian tracts
-- a quarter section in the northeast part of the township -- but subsequently
sold it to William Snavely. a little later Peter White laid claim to the land
and asked the assistance of the law to dispossess Snavely. Charles G. Merrick,
who had been elected sheriff of the county in 1838, organized a posse, and,
pursuant to the order of the court, went to Snavely's for the purpose of
evicting him. Snavely barricaded himself in his cabin, and he and his sons,
well armed, put up a spirited defense. Unable to gain admittance through the
doors or windows, the sheriff ordered some of his men to climb to the top of
the house and tear off the roof. No sooner had they begun to remove the
clapboards than Snavely fired through the opening and wounded one of the men.
This had the tendency to stop active operations on the part of the sheriff and
his men, and Snavely, thinking he had killed the man, made an attempt to
escape. He was overtaken, captured and taken to the county jail, where he
remained until his victim recovered from the wound, which was only a slight
one, when he was released upon payment of a fine and a promise to relinquish
the land. Some years after his death, his heirs received a portion of the value
of the improvements made by Snavely while in his possession."
Other
family notes passed down state the following:
William may have been in a
party that went to California during Gold Rush:
Leaving South Bend, Indiana
in February 1849, David Leeper traveled to California seeking his fortune as a
gold miner. This database details his journey west and life in California
between 1849 and 1854. It contains recounts his attempts to find gold at of
Redding's Diggings, Hangtown, and the Trinity River. Additionally, it provides
descriptions of Eureka, Sacramento and Humboldt Bay. Leeper also pays special
attention to the Digger Indians, illustrating the book with sketches of tribal
garb. For researchers of early California miners, this database can afford a
view into the life of one such prospector. [There is a William J Snavely on the
roster. If this is the same William he obviously returned to Indiana.]

"One of the oldest settlers of
Clinton township was WILLIAM SNAVELY, who came to the county in 1835 and took
up land in that township. He was born in Montgomery county, Virginia June 9,
1797. His parents came from Germany before the close of the eighteenth century
and did good service in our Revolutionary war. His father was at the surrender
of Burgoyne at Saratoga. The family first settled in Pennsylvania and
subsequently moved into Virginia and engaged in farming. Here William spent his
youth and early manhood, attending the schools and aiding his father in
farming. His parents died in Virginia and their remains were buried in
Montgomery county. Mr. Snavley married Margaret, daughter of William Erhart, of
Virginia and by William became the father of ten
children. Margaret passed away in 1866.
He married for
his second wife Mrs. Lovina (Dunham) Robinson, who came from Ohio. Her
grandfathers were both Revolutionary soldiers. She was of Scotch extraction
through her grandfather Drummond, who came from Scotland. Mr. Snavley became
the owner of a fine farm of two hundred and forty acres in Clinton township. He
passed away in 1877 or 78, but his descendants remained in the county.

763-764, JOHN D. STONER is one of the most progressive and successful farmers
of Westville, where he owns and operates a valuable and well improved farm of
five hundred and twenty acres. His possessions have all been acquired through
his own efforts, and as the result of his endeavor he has won a place among the
substantial citizens of his adopted county.
Mr. Stoner was born
in Shelby county, Ohio, on the 15th of October, 1830, and is a son of John and
Catharine (Kniff) Stoner, both natives of Pennsylvania, the former born in
1806, the later in 1809. At an early day they removed to Shelby county, Ohio,
and they became the parents of nine children, namely: Daniel; David, deceased:
Mary, who wedded Jackson Cane, of Shelby county, Ohio, and is now deceased;
John D.; Lucinda, deceased; Catharine, who married John Clawson and died in
Noble county; Samuel, Joseph and Sarah Jane, also deceased. In the state of his
nativity John D. Stoner was reared and educated in much the usual manner of
boys of his day, and he continued to make his home there until 1852, when he
came to LaPorte county, Indiana.
Two years later he was married
in Clinton township, February 23, 1854, to Miss Martha E. Snavley, who was born
in Montgomery county, Virginia, on the 27th of January, 1830.
Mrs.
Stoner's grandfather, John Snavley, came from Germany during the Revolutionary
war, and was hostler for one of the generals of the continental forces.
Mrs. Stoner's mother's brother, William Eahart, was also in the
Revolutionary war. Mrs. Stoner has spun and woven cloth from the wheel, and Mr.
Stoner has swung the old four fingered cradle from morn till night, and is also
acquainted with the still earlier sickle for harvesting grain. He has also used
the crude implements for braking and scutching the flax ready to spin into
thread for cloth. When he first became acquainted with LaPorte county there was
only one railroad through it, while there are now many trunk and branch lines
passing through in every direction. For about four years after his arrival in
this county Mr. Stoner was engaged in farming upon rented land. His first
purchase of land, eighty acres, was made in Clinton township about 1857, and it
was only partially improved and had no dwelling house. He has since prospered,
being able to add to his property from time to time until he now has five
hundred and twenty acres of rich and arable land under a high state of
cultivation. His success in life is due entirely to his own industry,
enterprise and good management and he well deserves the prosperity that has
come to him for he is upright and honorable in all his dealings. He is a
Jackson Democrat, and cast his first vote for James K. Polk.
General Notes: 1880 Census shows John age 48 farming with wife Martha
age 49. Horatio Clawson (age 12, b. IN) was also living in household with
