Louis Schumm Sr. Biography

Louis Schumm Sr.was born in Van Wert County, Ohio in 1840. He was the son of George and Maria (Pflueger) Schumm.They were both natives of Germany.
Louis worked on the family farm until leaving at the age 22.His father passed away in 1871 and his mother died in 1902.
In 1863 He came to Laporte Indiana. He and Mr. August Backhaus established the Sash and Door Factory that came to be known as the Laporte Sash and Door Company at the corner of State and Tyler. It is now known as the Legacy Building.
Louis Schumm Sr.was a devoted member of St.John Lutheran Church in Laporte.He served on boards for the church and school. His other business interest included the J.Street Milling Co.
He was married in 1864 to Menia Domke Bauch. She was the widow of Henry Bauch who passed away in April of 1863. Menia was the second wife of Henry Bauch who himself was a widower after losing his first wife Stephania. Henry Bauch and Stephania were the parents of two known children, a son Charles Edward Bauch and a daughter Emma Bauch.
Henry Bauch and Menia Domke had two known sons since they were united in Marriage in 1858, Augustave A. Bauch and Henry A, Bauch. So at the time of their marriage Louis Schumm Sr. became the stepfather to four children.
Louis and Menia Schumm had three children of their own Willie, Louis Jr. and Rosa.
They resided at 216 B.Street for over 50 years. Menia died in 1917 and Louis Schumm Sr.in 1922.
They are both buried at St.John Lutheran Cemetery in Laporte, Indiana
