ROBERT C FISHER-Varied experience has given to Robert C Fisher the qualities necessary for police duty that usually can be secured only through active service on the force. He was born July 10, 1885, at South Bend, Indiana, where he was reared until he was ten years old. His parents were Peter S. and Elizabeth (Miller) Fisher, the former of whom was a native of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and served in the Civil war; he took part in the noted engagements at Seven Pines, Fair Oaks, and Chickahominee Swamp. The mother, Elizabeth (Miller) Fisher, was also a native of Pennsylvania. Our subject was on of three children born to his parents, the others being Frank and Mary Shigley. Robert Fisher attended the grade schools of Elkhart, Indiana and LaPorte, and his first employer in life was on a dairy farm in this county and subsequently in as shoe store owned by William Stern. He then entered the employ of the Reliance Manufacturing Company, and later be came associated with the Cable Piano company, where he remained for twenty years -- part of which time was spent as superintendent of one of the departments of that concern. In the fall of 1923 he enter the service of Lyon & Healy Piano Company, and in 1924 he became assiciated with the Advance Rumley Company, where he remained until he was appointed chief of police on January 4, 1926. His marriage was with Lilly Ewert, daughter of August and Fredericka (Baker) Ewert, both of whom were natives of Germany. To this union were born Donald, Gladys, and Robert. Mr Fisher is a member of the Masonic Order and the laPorte Chamber of Commerce.

lodge. Mr. Fisher was the Chief of Police in the John Line administraton, 1926-1929, and a city councilman for several years. He was a Republican.

additional information, Robert passed away of heart attack setting in easy chair in his own home
Robert Cherry Fisher, Sr. attended school through the eighth grade then continued education on on by reading the encyclopedia, Granddaughter Kay remembers his beautiful handwriting and hearing her grandfather proclaim that he had never missed attending the LaPorte County Fair for over 60 plus years.
Member of Evangelical Reformed, Laporte, Indiana
Elks BPOE Club, Laporte, Indiana Played golf, Country Club LaPorte, Indiana,
City Councilman, Active in Politics, loved to fish with his son Don on Pine Lake in LaPorte.
Worked Election boards, woodworker, tables, chairs, houses, dollhouses, etc also was a bartender in the 1940's
Memories during Police Chief era:
Caught bootleggers from Chicago gangs running booze through LaPorte. He spotted them from the way the back end of car was weighted down. He could see the cars loaded with heavy cargo. He had a black leather satchel filled with guns (from police work, confiscated upon arrest of gangsters, he worked in cooperation with Sheriff McDonald LaPorte County Sheriff.
Other memories
One time when cutting wood, he cut the tip of his finger off and drove to the doctor, had stitches put in but a few days later he did the same thing to another finger, but this time he said he was too embarrassed to go to the doctor so he fastened the tip back on with tape, it healed ok anyway.
Memories from Kay Fisher Bailey, Robert's Granddaughter
Grandpa Fisher was a fine woodworker. He worked as a cabinet maker in a piano factory in LaPorte when Don was born in 1908.
Later he remodeled his house, made tables and many toys. For me he made a doll bed, doll cradle, doll cupboard, doll house, doll chair and carved small hand toys. He made cribbage boards with herringbone wooden design. He loved to go to his basement workshop and build, fix, or turn out things on his lathe.
He had a gift of smiling and being friendly. He was very civic minded and patriotic. When news of the end of WWII came instead of going out to celebrate with the neighbors, he sat down and cried for all the lost boys.
He belonged to the Elks Country Club and played golf, but I think fishing was his favorite hobby. He and my dad Donald, would fish on Pine Lake many summer afternoons and evenings.
He loved to tell stories as the family sat around the dining room table after dinner on Sundays and Holidays. He always had us laughing.
We never heard him say an angry word - only pleasant and happy times.
His good, gentle, and caring ways were shown to everyone, especially to his wife, Lilly, my grandmother. He called her "Mama" and helped her all the time.
