Wagner, David F. - Obituary on May 5, 1919 - Engineer Succumbs after long Illness - - David F. Wagner, Aged 64, had been in Company's Service Since 1881. Active in Brotherhood. Compelled to Retire from Work last August, Because of Encroachments of Bright's disease - burial at LaPorte
   David Franklin Wagner of 422 Jefferson Street, Elkhart, Indiana, one of the city's best known locomotive engineers, having served the Lake Shore and New York Central for 39 years, died at his home at 6:45 o'clock this morning. His death had been expected as he had been seriously ill with Bright's disease since last August, and had been bedfast for five weeks.
Mr. Wagner who was 64 years old, having been born in LaPorte on June 26, 1854, began his railroad career as a brakeman on a construction train in the Evanston yard on June 1879. He continued in that capacity until the following March when he became a fireman in the LaPorte yard on an old-time wood-burning engine. His road service began in September, 1881, but after being injured in an accident at a turntable, he went to work in the roundhouse on August 29, 1886, continuing until the summer of 1890, when he became a fireman. In 1891 he was promoted to engineer, being assigned to the old No. 546 in the LaPorte yard. He remained there until August of 1893, when he was assigned to road service and ran on the main lines and all branches of the road between Chicago and Toledo. In 1909 he went to Chicago, where he ran suburban passenger trains until August of last year, when he was compelled to retire because of his illness. Last October he returned to this city with his family. Active in Organizations ---- Mr. Wagner was a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and of the Employees Mutual Benefit association. At one time he was also a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, having served four years as master of the local lodge. He always was very active in the order and was sent as the delegate of the lodge to national conventions at Atlanta, GA and at San Francisco. He also served the lodge as its secretary and treasurer.
Mr. Wagner's marriage to Miss May Andrews ... took place on October 28, 1874. His bride was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Andrews. Mr. Andrews was one of the old Lake Shore company's best known passenger conductors. Surviving Mr. Wagner are his wife; a son, Thomas F. Wagner, of this city; two daughters Mrs. Alfred Pounder of this city and Mrs. Charles McClung of Chicago; two grandchildren, and a sister, Miss Sarah Wagner of LaPorte.
The funeral services will be held at the home at 10 o'clock Thursday in charge of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. The burial will take place in the Patton cemetery, LaPorte. - another notice on the obituary notes that Rev. Cleon Bigler, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. GEORGE E. WAKEMAN   - George Edward Wakeman, 83, Union Mills, died at 1:30 pm Thursday at Pine Lake division hospital after a week's illness. He was born in Union Mills on Jan. 7, 1885 to Don and Caddie (Linard) Wakeman. He was married in Union Mills on Oct. 20, 1914 to Fredda Chambers. He lived in Union Mills all his life and was a retired machinist, having been employed last at the Kingsbury Ordnance plant. He was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian church, the Masonic Lodge, and the Conservation club, all at Union Mills, and the Scottish Rife, South Bend. Surviving are his wife, Fredda; two daughters, Mrs. Lee (Celia) Parsons, LaPorte, and Mrs. Roger (Janet) Colter, Wlton, Conn.; four sons, Lloyd, Clinton, Mo.; Jack, Thornton, Ill.; and Willard and Douglas, both of Union Mills; two sisters, Mrs. Lowell Chambers and Mrs. Elmer Beatty, Sr., both of Union Mills, and 19 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday at the Kosanke Brothers Funeral home, Union Mills, the Rev. Craig Meyers officiating. Burial will be in Union Mills cemetery. Waldruff, Margaret – Michigan City News, January 2, 1895 - - Died, on Thursday, Dec. 27, 1894 - - - Mrs. Margeret Waldruff, better known as “Aunt Margeret Waldruff,” She was among the very last of the original settlers of Galena township and was the first white woman here. She came in 1834 and with the exception of short trips made to Pennsylvania and Texas she has lived here with her daughter, Mrs. Horner. She was nearly 90 years old. Funeral and interment at Hesston. Walter Wallin LaPORTE - Walter T. Wallin, 58, of LaPorte, died at 12:30 a.m. Friday (Oct. 31, 1997) at home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Andrew Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at the Door Village Cemetery, LaPorte. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Wallin was born June 23, 1939, in Chicago, the son of Solvay Wallin. Surviving are three sons, Mike Wallin, LaPorte, Rick Wallin, LaPorte, and Mark Wallin, Hudson Lake, Ind.; and one grandson. Mr. Wallin resided in LaPorte since 1961, coming from Hanna. He was employed as an electrician at IBEW Local 531 and was a member of Falcons Lodge, LaPorte. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

WARREN E. WARD - Warren E. Ward, 78, of route 1, Mill Creek, died suddenly Wednesday at 9:45 am at home. He was born Aug. 29, 1892 in St. Joseph county to Albert and Mae (Warren) Ward and had lived in this area since 1918. He was married Sept. 12, 1917 in Wills township, LaPorte county, to Elsie Hostetler, who survives. Mr. Ward was a trustee of Olive township for eight years; a member of the Sauktown Church of Christ for 53 years, a member or the Masonic Lodge of Terre Coupe, and an elder of the church for 29 years. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Feece, Niles, Mich., and Mrs. Myrtle Davenport of DeMotte, Ind.; three sons, Henry of New Carlisle, Roy of Osceola, Ind., and Claire of South Bend; 20 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. One son, one sister, and one brother preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 pm at the Sauktown Church of Christ, the Rev. Elmer McEathron officiating. Burial will be in Sauktown cemetery. Friends may call at the Ward Residence, route 1, Mill Creek, today and until 11 am Saturday when the body will be taken to the church.     Henry Warkentine, Sr., one of the city's oldest and best known residents, and until his retirement a few years ago one of the city's most prosperous business men, dies Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock at the family home, 519 Pine street. Death was due to rheumatic gout following an illness of short duration. He was bed fast only ten days.
The deceased was born in Mecklenberg, Germany, August 27, 1842, and was therefore 72 years of age his last birthday. He came to Michigan City in his young manhood, arriving here on December 4, 1864, little more than a half century ago. Three years later, November 3, 1867, he and Louise Ebert, daughter of the late John Ebert, were united in wedlock and to this union nine children were born, eight of whom survive with the widow and mother. Mr. Warkentine was a baker by trade and in the late summer of 1870 he embarked in the bakery business. The Warkentine bakery enjoyed a long life of prosperity and for more than thirty-three years it was one of the well-established lines of industry in the city. Since retiring from business 11 years ago, Mr. Warkentine enjoyed the fruits of his toil and lived a quiet home life surrounded by his family. The family includes the wife, these children: Mrs. August Heitschmidt**, Mrs. Fred J. Krueger, Mrs. Henry Koelln, Miss Cora Warkentine, Mrs. J. W. (Anna) Davis, the later of Brownsville, Tex., George, Otto and Henry Warkentine, jr., all of this city. Edward, a son, died thirteen years ago. E. L.     Henry Ludwig Christian Warkentine**, 89, a groceryman in this city for a number of years, passed away at his home, 912 Tennessee street, yesterday afternoon after an illness of two days due to a complication of ailments. He was born Jan. 2, 1845, in Niendorf, Largun, Mecklenberg, Germany, the son of August and Dorothea (Eichelberg) Warkentine.
He came to Michigan City 67 years ago. His marriage to Ida Sophia Lambka was solemnized in this city in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church, Feb. 19, 1873. She died several years ago. Mr. Warkentine was a member of St. John's Evangelical church, the Odd Fellows and the Royal Arcanum. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Otto J. Volkman, Chicago; a granddaughter, Dorothy Warkentine Volkman, of Fredonia, N.Y., and a sister, Mrs. Hattie Haury, Berwyn, Ill. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon from the residence at 3:15 and from St. John's church at 3:30. The Rev. Paul Irion will conduct the service. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the residence Friday evening and Saturday until the hour of the funeral. The family has asked that flowers be omitted. Some records also show him as Edward. e.g. W.P.A. Warkentien, Lillian - Obit from La Porte Herald-Argus   Mrs. Lillian Ruth Warkentien, 92, of Hamilton Grove Community Center, New Carlisle, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at 2:25 a. m. at Hamilton Grove following a lengthy illness. She was born nov. 23, 1909, in Peru, Ind., to Mack and Iva (Young) Million, and had lived in New Carlisle for eight years, coming from La Porte. Mrs. Warkentienhad worked at First National Bank and was a member of several local Baptist Church groups and the 700 club. Surviving are one daughter, Phyllis Lain of La Porte; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She was proceeded in death by four husbands; one son, Marion J. Holloman; two sisters; and four brothers. A graveside service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Patton Cemetery with Rev. John Vincent officiating. Essling Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

and with the Indiana 48th Regiment , Company D, from 1 January 1862 to September 1863.
BURIAL: Location is disputed--military markers appear in two cemeteries:
One military marker is located in Foster Cemetery (section 1, lot 8), Galena township, with the following inscription: Cyprian G. Warner, Co. F, 9 Ind. Inf.; a GAR 1861-1865 star has been placed on this grave.
A second military marker is located in Pine Lake Cemetery, Center Township, LaPorte City, with the following inscription: C. G. Warner, Co. D, 48th Ind. Inf. The Pine Lake Cemetery Association burial card identifies the following: Cyarian H. Warner - Civil, grave 5, [Lot] No. 11, Maple Hill sub-division, Name - W. F. Layton, Date of Purchase - (blank), with these remarks: "no stones, unknown, GAR Flags." The preceding information may be in error. The aformentioned military marker is physically located at grave 5 in the adjacent [Lot] No. 13, Maple Hill sub-division, Name - soldiers, Date of Purchase - 1858, Remarks: Mrs. Wm. Lyons Lot 12 Maple Hill - 3. The burial card for Lot 13 and the corresponding military markers identify the graves of 5 other Civil War soldiers in this section: (1) George W. He died at his home in Galena township where he has lived for over 40 years. He was about 76 years of age and leaves a wife and three daughters, Mrs. William Smith, Mrs. Hiram Bement and Miss Emma, all of Galena township." His age at death according to the Posey Chapel burial cards is 77 years, 8 months, 29 days. Buried in Posey Chapel Cemetery.

Warner, Emeline Cynthia Olds - The Acorn, Three Oaks, Michigan, January 21, 1926; page 1 - - -"MRS. EMELINE COPELAND - Emeline Cynthia, daughter of Kingsley and Sophia Olds, was born in Niles, Michigan, April 17, 1841. "On July 1, 1861, she married Coridon Warner, who passed from this life September 29, 1877. "To this union were born five daughters, three of whom survive. "In 1890, she was married to Abial C. Copeland who died August 29, 1925. "Her long and useful life closed on January 14, 1926 at the age of 84 years, and 9 months.
  "Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. S. Hamilton [Ed. note: Congregational church] at her late home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment at Foster cemetery. The burial services were in charge of Three Oaks Chapter No. 209 O.E.S."

Funeral services for Walter, Warner, 76, who died at the home of his son, Walter, Jr., in San Francisco, Calif., Thursday afternoon, will be held at the Connelly funeral home in Three Oaks, Mich., Tuesday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Foster cemetery in Galena township, Ind. Warner's body will arrive in Three Oaks, Monday. "He was born in Rolling Prairie, April 11, 1865. He lived in Galena township until two years ago when he went to live in California.
   "Survivors, beside his son, include one sister, Mrs. Eugene Shedd of Grand Beach, Mich.; one half-sister, Mrs. Belle Worden, South Bend; three half-brothers, Earl Shedd, South Bend, and Milo and Lomine [sic, Gilbert Lamaine] Shedd of Rolling Prairie, and a number of nephews and nieces."

   Willard Warner died last night at 7:30 at his late home from a complication of diseases. He had been seriously ill for a week but had been in poor health for the past two years. Deceased was born in Oct. 1831 and when but a lad he moved to this city where he has since resided continuously. He was a soldier, having fought in the Mexican and Civil wars.
  "He married Miss Sophia Merrill and two children were born to the union, they being James A. Warner of Three Oaks, and Mrs. Allie Ferguson, of Albion, Mich. Mrs. Warner died in 1869 and four years ago Mr. Warner married Jennie Johnson, who survives him. The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon from the Methodist church at 2 o'clock, Rev. A. H. DeLong will officiate, assisted by Rev. E. D. Daniels. Patton Post, G.A.R., will conduct services at Patton's cemetery. A. Cutler, funeral director.

   AN OLD RESIDENT GONE
   J. A. Warner attended the funeral of his father which was held at the Methodist church at LaPorte last Sunday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. A. H. DeLong of that city, assisted by Rev. E. D. Daniels. The deceased has resided in this vicinity since the early days and is well known here-abouts, especially by the old settlers. We quote the following obituary from the LaPorte Herald of Nov. 2:
"'Willard Warner, who faithfully served his country in two wars, the Mexican and the Civil wars, died at 7:30 o'clock last evening at his home, 601 Jefferson street, of a complication of diseases from which he had been suffering for several years. The deceased was born in New York in October 1831, and came here with his parents when but a child. In the early fifties he married Sophia Merrill, as a result of which union there were born to them two children, James A. Warner of Three Oaks, Mich., and Mrs. Allie Ferguson, of Albion, Mich., both of whom survive their father. In 1869, Mrs. Warner died and Sept. 14, 1897, the deceased was married to Jennie Johnson, who mourns his departure.
  "'Deceased served throughout the whole of the Mexican war, entering the army at the age of 16. He was a volunteer 4 1/2 years in the civil war, being color bearer of his regiment (the 48th Indiana), an honorable but dangerous position to fill. All reports state that he was an excellent soldier, being fearless and faithful. Comrade Warner was a member of Patton post this city.'" Burial at Patton Cemetery.

Watterson - Charles Watterson Sr. - Mr. Charles D. Watterson Sr., 81, of 215 D St., LaPorte, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at 2:10 a.m. at his home following a lengthy illness. A funeral Mass will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Ted Nordquist and Rev. Patrick Neary officiating. Friends may call at Essling Funeral Home Monday from 2 to 9 p.m. where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m., and Tuesday from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery where military services will be held.     He was born in Salem, Ill., on July 14, 1919, to William E. and Mary E. Smith Watterson. On May 24, 1946, in Salem, he married Helen L. Barksdale, who preceded him in death on April 11, 1979. Survivors include two daughters, Donna Nielsen, LaPorte, and Marian Jordan, South Elgin, Ill.; four sons, Charles Watterson Jr., Joseph Watterson, and John Watterson, all of LaPorte, and David Watterson, South Bend; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Donahue, Pekin, Ill.; one brother, Paul M. Watterson, Union Mills; and several nieces and nephews. Also preceding him in death were four brothers, Thomas, Edward, William and Robert Watterson. Mr. Watterson retired as vice president of LaPorte Hospital. He was also associated with Holy Family, "E" Street Hospital and the Pine Lake Division of LaPorte Hospital. He retired after 26 years working with the hospitals. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in European Theatre as a staff sergeant. He was past president of Indiana State Hospitals Engineers Association, and past president of the Executive Housekeepers Association of the United States. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society of St. Joseph Catholic Church; a member of the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, and was past director of music at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Kingsford Heights. He was past president of Parents without Partners, LaPorte Chapter, and a member of the Over 40 Dance Club. He was also a member of LaPorte Lions Club, a Third Degree member of St. Michael Council 1542 Knights of Columbus, and a member of LaPorte Hospital Auxiliary (Red Coat), Hamon-Gray American Legion Post 83, Hubner Swanson VFW Post 1130 (past member of LaPorte Chapter), LaPorte Hospital Retirees Association and LaPorte Moose Lodge. Wawok, Joseph Anthony - Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus January 19, 1973. Joseph Anthony Wawok, 45, of 405 Tipton Street, died at 3:55 am Monday at Lakeside Nursing Home in Michigan City after a lengthy illness. He was born in DeFunick Springs, Florida January 17, 1927 to Stephen and Rose (Medzak) Wawok. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church. He is survived by four brothers, Casimer, Stanley, and Walter all of LaPorte, Emanuel of Michigan City, three sisters, Miss Sophia and Miss Irene Wawok, and Mrs. Helen Macher all of LaPorte. His parents, one brother, and one sister precede him in death. A private service was held at 9 am today at Haverstock Chapel, the Rev. Dennis Teles officiating.

Mrs. Rozalia Wawok, 70, of 405 Tipton Street, died at 4:45 am Wednesday at the Lakeside Nursing Home in Michigan City, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Poland on February 11, 1902 and had lived here 50 years coming from Florida. She was married July 28, 1923 in Poland to Stephen Wawok who preceded her in death May 17, 1949. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church. Surviving are five sons, Casimir, Stanley, Walter, and Joseph all of LaPorte and Emanuel of Michigan City; three daughters, Miss Sophia, Miss Irene Wawok and Mrs. Helen Macher, all of LaPorte; 18 grandchildren; one great grandchild. Wawok, Stephen - LaPorte Herald Argus - 1950   Stephen Wawok, 51 of 405 Tipton street, died suddenly at the Holy Family hospital at 10 o’clock last night. The son of Joseph and Mary Wawok, he was born n Poland on Feb. 11, 1898 and had lived here for 21 years, coming from Florida. He was an employee of the Indiana Moulding and Frame Co. On July 28, 1923 in Poland he was married to Rose Medzak, who survives. He was a member of the Sacred Heart church and of the P.N.A. club. Also surviving are six sons, Joseph, Manuel, Edward, Walter, Stanley, and Casmier, all at home; and our daughters, Irene, Helen, Jeanette, and Sophia, all at home. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9 o’clock at the Sacred Heart church with the Rev. S. Zjawinski officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery. Weber, Mrs. Nancy - - Michigan City Evening News - Feb 20, 1909  -  Mrs. Nancy Webster, wife of Calvin Webster, is dead at her home at Union Mills at the advanced age of 96 years. Mrs.Webster was born in New York, but had resided in this county for a number of years.

Weed, Frances Caroline – (Abraham V. Logan's wife) obit 1912     Frances Caroline Weed, daughter of Patrick S. & Sarah (Catlin) Weed, was born in Kingsbury, Washington Co., NY Aug. 30, 1832 and died March 29th in her 80th year. With her parents came west at the age of five, spending most of her life in La Porte Co. She was married to Abram V. Logan, Jan. 2, 1854, and since 1869 they have lived on the home place, one mile south of Union Mills. She leaves a husband, three sons, four daughters, 25 grandchildren, two brothers, and one sister. One son died in infancy. She was baptized and united with the Advent Church when 15 yrs. old. Her life work was for others and well may it be said, "She rests from her labor, but her words do follow her. Her children rise up and call her blessed." Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church, Tues. April 2, 1912. Rev. S. E. Smith officiating. Burial in Union Mills Cemetery.

Weidner, Mrs. Bertha – Died Jan 10, 1936 - - Mrs Bertha Weidner, age 76, of 702 C Street passed away at her home at 10:55 last night, after an illness of two years. Mrs. Weidner suffered two strokes shortly before her death. She was born in Europe on Sept. 16, 1859, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hesly. She came to this country as a child with her parents and had lived in LaPorte for the past 40 or 50 years. Her husband, Joseph Weidner, preceded her in death a number of years ago. Surviving are one brother, Daniel Hesly of Chicago and four grandchildren, one of whom, Forrest Jerndt, resides here. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the home. The Rev. Weidner, Celia – The Daily Herald Tuesday January 23, 1923 page 2 - - Celia Weidner, the 20 months old infant of Mr. and Mrs. John Weidner, 503 Grove Street, who passed away Monday, will be buried Wednesday morning. The funeral services will be held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Father Zircher will be in charge. Interment will be in the St. Joseph cemetery. His marriage to Miss Mary Helfen took place in 1876, and the bereaved wife survives him with three daughters, Miss Jennie Weidner, Mrs. Kate Hartford, and Mrs. Martha Doolittle. He also leaves two granddaughters, Ruth Hartford and Bernice Doolittle, one brother, Frank Weidner and three sisters, Mrs. Maggie Dettling, of Chicago, Mrs. Anna Pagel of Adrian, Mich; and Mrs. Mary Engle of this city. Mr. Weidner was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church, St. Joseph's Aid society, and the South Bend lodge of Elks. He was a good citizen and father. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Joseph church, the service to be conducted by Rev. Father Messman, assisted by Rev. Biegel. Since last April the deceased had been particularly feeble, and general debility brought about the end. Mrs. Weidner is survived by five children, thirty six grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. The sons are Constantine and Frank and three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Dettling, Chicago, Mrs. Charles Pagel, Adrian, Michigan, and Mrs. Charles Engle, LaPorte. Forty years ago Mrs. Weidner became a widow. The funeral services will be held Monday morning, 9 o'clock, from St. Joseph's Catholic church. Interment will be held at the Catholic cemetery. The arrangements are in charge of Weir & Sievert. The deceased leaves not only a host of relatives to mourn her departure, but a legion of friends who knew and loved her well. In 1852 Mr. and Mrs. Weidner moved to this country from Germany, settling in this city. In her 56 years of residence in LaPorte, Mrs. Weidner won many hearts by her devotion as a mother and her staunchness as a friend.

Weidner, Frank S., Sr. - The LaPorte Argus, November 2, 1918 - - Frank Weidner, who died at his home yesterday afternoon, was born May 4, 1859, passing away at the age of 59 years. He is mourned by his widow, Rose Weidner, three sons, Frank, John, and Otto, and five daughters, Mrs. R. Cushing, Sister M. Leonarda, who is at St. Mary's hospital in Wast St. Louis, Mo. Mrs. John Welsh, Mrs. L.R. Cheeseman, and Mis Gertrude Weidner. Another daughter, Mrs. Walter Sontag, died recently at her home in Chicago. Two sisters also survive, Mrs. Maggie Dettling and Mrs. Charles Engle. The funeral services will be conducted at St. Joesph's Catholic church Monday morning at 9 o'clock. Rev. Father Zircher officiating, with burial in the Catholic cemetery. Weir and Ebbert are the directors. In his fraternal associations Mr. Weidner was a member of St. Joseph's Aid Society and of the court of the Catholic Order of Foresters at Michigan City. He was a painter by trade and had been a resident of LaPorte for many years. Many friends mourn his death.

Weidner, Mrs. Rose – This was in June 23, 1921 addition - - Mrs Rose Weidner, widow of the late Frank Weidner, was found dead in bed this morning by her daughter who missed her mother's usual early rise. Mrs. Weidner has been under a doctor's care for some time but was not thought to be in a serious condition. She was afflicted with heart trouble. Rose Trost Weidner was born in LaPorte county, March 13, 1864 and lived here all her life. Her husband died November 2, 1918. To her were born twelve children, seven daughters and five sons. Two of the sons and two of the daughters have preceded her in death. She leaves Frank and John of this city and Otto of Michigan City, Sister Leonardo of St Mary's hospital at Centralia, Ill., Mrs. Richard Cushman of Mishawaka, Mrs. John Welsh, Mrs. L.R. Cheeseman and Miss Gertrude Weidner of LaPorte. The funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Joseph's Catholic church with burial at the St. Joseph's cemetery. Rev. Father Zircher will officate with L.A. Deker in charge.

Weidner, Mary Helfen - LaPorte Daily Argus, Tuesday, November 8, 1921 - - - Mary Weidner, 67 years of age, one of the oldest members of St. Joseph's Catholic church, passed away at her home, 202 E Street, at 10:20 o'clock this morning. Death was due to paralysis. Mrs. Weidner was born in Germany, June 27, 1854. Her husband, Constantine Weidner, died in 1909. Surviving Mrs. Weidner are three daughters, Mrs. John Wolff, Mrs. Benjamin Hartford, and Mrs. Emmet Doolittle, all of LaPorte; one sister, Mrs. Mary Baxter, of New Buffalo, four grandchildren and two nieces live at Chesterton,Ind.

Welker, George - Laporte Daily Herald, Jan 24, 1901    George Welker of this township died last night at 8 o'clock. He had been ill since July 4th. Mr. Welker was born in Columbiana County, O., Oct 4, 1823, coming here when 21 years of age, settling near Ross's Mills. He married Cynthia Brown and was the father of five children, Mrs. Nelson Morton of Galena township, Mrs. Ames near the Summit, Mrs. Allice Pittenger <sp>(Piffenger) South Bend, and Frank and John Welker this city, all of whom with his wife survive him. He also leaves a brother and two sisters, John Welker and Mrs. Fairbanks, Akron, O., and Mrs. Elizabeth Simpson, Blue Mound, Kan. Deceased was the assessor of Springfield and Center townships for 17 years and served as trustee of Springfield township six years. The funeral will take place Saturday at 11 a.m. from Rossburg church, Rev. Smith of Springfield Methodist Episcopal circuit officiating. Burial at Rossburg Cemetery. A . Cutler, mortician.

Wells, Americus - La Porte Daily Herald, Monday, July 26, 1897 - The death of Americus Wells, of Galena township, took place at 12:00 noon, Sunday. A disease of the liver was the cause of his demise. Mr. Wells was in his 57th year, having been born in Clinton, Missouri in 1840. When he was but a mere lad he came to this county with his parents and had since resided here. He was a farmer by occupation. A wife and two children, a son and a daughter, aged respectively 26 and 22, survive him. His illness was short, he having been confined at home less than two weeks. The remains will be laid at rest in Lambs' chapel tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock.

WELLS, EVELINE I. (Maiden name Porter) – Michigan City News, 19 September 1923 - - -Mrs. Eveline I. Wells, 85, 217 W. Ninth Street died this morning at 8:15 of cancer of the stomach. The deceased had been ailing for several years. The decedent was a native of La Porte county, having been born in Galena township November 10, 1838. She spent the greater part of her life here. On July 22, 1857, she married Ezra Wells, who died many years ago. Surviving the decedent is one daughter, Mrs. Lydia Haverstock of La Porte. Mrs. Wells was a member of the First Christian Church. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock at the residence, 217 W. Ninth Street. Rev. D. C. Ford of the First Christian Church will officiate. Burial at Rolling Prairie cemetery.

Wellwood, Ephriam - died Jan 24, 1933 - 1933 obituary (also see biography on LaPorte County biographies page.) - - - Word has been received here of the death of Ephriam Wellwood aged 90, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Della Amor of Tampa, Fla. Mr. Wellwood was a former summer resident of Laporte and was well known in this city.

Wellwood, Lucinda P.  - (died June 15, 1922) - - The funeral services of Mrs. Lucinda P. Wellwood were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Christian Church. Mrs. Wellwood passed away at the family home, 313 Park street, Thursday evening, June 15, at 8:15, following an illness of 12 weeks. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Starr and was born at Greenfield, Ohio December 16, 1847. Her marriage to Ephriam Wellwood, who survives her, took place at Three Oaks, Mich., Dec 11, 1867. She is also survived by one son and three daughters, Frank O. Wellwood of Sheridan, Wyoming. Mrs. Emma Goeckel of Chicago, Mrs. J.C. Knuth of Estelline, South Dakota, and Mrs. Della Smykal of LaPorte. A son, Royal, preceded the mother. She leaves seven grandchildren, one brother, Theron P. Starr of Three Oaks, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Dingman of Michigan City.
Mrs. Wellwood was a member of the Free Methodist church and had lived in this county for the past 50 years.

Wellwood, Royal – died Dec 16, 1918 - - The remains of the late Royal Wellwood, who died December 16, last year, arrived in LaPorte Friday afternoon. The remains were accompanied from Los Angeles to Laporte by his wife, Mrs. Royal Wellwood and his brother, Frank Wellwood of Wyoming. At the time of Mr. Wellwood's death, Mrs. Wellwood was seriously ill in a hospital at Los Angeles suffering from influenza and scarlet fever, so the remains were placed in a vault until Mrs. Wellwood was able to travel. Mrs. Wellwood was formerly Miss Etta Dizard of this city.
   Mr. Wellwood is survived by his parents, three children, the wife, three sisters and one brother. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the chapel at the Weir Undertaking parlors at LaPorte. Interment will take place in Pine Lake Cemetery.
   In the previous year on December 17, 1918, his original obit showed the following:
   Royal Adelbert Wellwood, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Wellwood, 313 Park Street, died at his home in Los Angeles, Cal. yesterday morning of influenza-pneumonia. He was born in LaPorte County, Oct. 27, 1887; was married to Francis H Hysard (should be Dysard) of Michigan City on Nov. 26, 1913. He is survived by his widow, who is also ill with influenza; three children, Lyle, Lucile and Harold, and his parents. There are three sisters, Mrs. W. J. Goeckel, Chicago; Mrs. J. C. West, George -  George West, son of Jesse West who died in Hanna some where in the 60ties, was buried in Morgan cemetery last week Wednesday, a minister from Knox officiating. Mr. West died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Collins of Davis. He had been in ill health a long time; he was nearly 69 years old. The deceased leaves a son and daughter, several grandchildren and other relatives, some of whom are living in La Porte. A sister is in Waukesha, and a son in Joliet. He was buried the 18th inst.    After two weeks of illness, in which his death had been expected at any time, John D. West, an old and respected citizen of this city and a war veteran, passed peacefully away at his late home, 418 Pine Street, at 5:40 O’clock Sunday evening. His death had been caused by heart trouble and Bright’s disease. He had been troubled intermittently with an affliction of the heart for several years and this became complicated months ago with Bright’s disease, and Mr. West had rarely left the house during the last six or eight months. Mr. West was born in England June 21, 1842 and was sixty one years, two months and nine days old. When he was twelve years old he came to this country and settled in Pennsylvania and when the war commenced, he enlisted in Co. D. of the 111th Pennsylvania, and served four years and twenty days. He came to this city with his family twenty five years ago. He was an enthusiastic Grand Army man and every year was a familiar figure in the Decoration Day exercises of the George V. Rawson post number 46 of which he was a member. He is survived by his widow, two sisters, and ten children. The sisters reside in Pennsylvania, and the children are Mrs. L. F. Voltz of Grand Rapids and C. W. West, Mrs. T. J. Murphy, Mrs. W. G. Wagner, Mrs. C. N. Keeler, Miss Martha West, George West, Albert West and Miss Cordelia West, all of this city. The funeral was held at 2 O’clock p.m. Tuesday from the First Methodist Church. The services were conducted by Rev. O. L. Kiplinger in the absence of Dr. J. H. Cissel. George V. Rawson post, No. 46, G. A. R. of which Mr. West was a member, attended in a body, and the pallbearers were Jonathon Snook, Robert Donnell, Fred A. Westfall, A. B. Barron, T. M. Hamlet, and Nicholas Beaver, all of whom are members of the post. There were many beautiful floral offerings, among which was a design from the G.A. R. Mr. West was a brave and dutiful soldier, a good husband and father and an upright citizen, and his death will be mourned by all who knew him. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Deceased was born in Shelby County, Ky., in 1803 and moved to the home from which she was buried in 1834. Funeral was held Wednesday, Rev. A. W. Wood officiating. Wheel, Emery - Michigan City Evening Dispatch, Wed. 2 Aug. 1911, p. 1, c. 1 - - Send Crucifix to Widow - Sacred Remembrance for Family of Emery Wheel Victim - - The crucifix, the symbol of religious faith of George Shockurski, killed Monday by a bursting emery wheel at Laporte, taken from the casket containing his lifeless clay, lowered yesterday into a grave in the Catholic cemetery, will be the sacred remembrance of the tragedy in which the Pole lost his life to the widow in weeds (?) in Poland with her five little fatherless children. The crucifix, together with the money which the Pole had in Laporte Savings bank, $275, together with $35 found on the person of Shockurski, will be at once forwarded to the foreign land, bringing some measure of relief to the widow now forced to fight the battle of life alone.
The funeral services of the unfortunate man were held in St. Joseph's Catholic church in LaPorte. His countrymen attended in a body, paying a pathetic tribute of comradeship.
  Coroner Osborn held the inquest yesterday. His verdict was that of accidental death. The tragedy was due to the carelessness of the workman. He had made the mistake of placing the rest for the casting too far from the wheel, as a result of which the casting caught between the rest and the wheel, breaking the casting and smashing the 14-inch wheel into five pieces, one of which killed him. Wheeler, Mrs. Mary F. - (9-17-1923)   Mrs Mary Wheeler, 61, one of LaPorte's best known and most popular ladies, passed away at 1:55 a.m. today at the home of her son, Roy Wheeler, on Weller Avenue, after an illness of nearly a year. Mrs. Wheeler was born in this city January 31, 1862. On May 1, 1880, she was married to George L. Wheeler. Five sons born to this union survive her. Mrs. Wheeler was a charter member of the War Member's society, and a member of the Tribe of Ben Hur. She belonged to the Christian church and to the Ladies Aid society of that church. Among those who are left to mourn the deceased woman are five sons, two sisters and one brother. The sons are Messrs. George, Roy, and Leon of LaPorte, Lewis of Chicago, and Walter of Crawfordsville. The sisters are Mrs. Bertha Bunton and Mrs. Lenna Hallett. The announcement of the funeral will be made later. Cutler Bros. are in charge. Wheeler, Philander (April 14, 1899)   Philander Wheeler died today at 3 am. of dropsical affliction at his home corner of Chicago and Washington Streets after a six weeks' illness, aged 79. He was born Aug 26, 1821, in Franklin County, Ind., coming here at an early day, his residence in this city covering a period of about 45 years. Mr. Wheeler was twice married. July 2, 1840, he was joined in wedlock with Elizabeth McIntyre, who died August 22, 1857 in her 33rd year. His second marriage, Feb. 24, 1858, was to Elizabeth Krellar who survives him. Two children were the fruits of the second marriage, a son and daughter, the former, George Wheeler, residing in this city, the daughter, Celestia Eliza Ann Albrecht, dying Dec. 17, 1889. Mr. Wheeler was by occupation a saw filer and general tool repairer. He was for a number of years a carpenter for the Lake Shore railroad company, and afterwards car inspector. Deceased also worked ten years for the Loomis Wood Manufacturing company. He was a member of the Christian Church. White, Charles - LaPorte Herald Argus, July 8 1932 - - - "Charles L. White, age 67, passed away yesterday afternoon at his home at 312 East Fifth street, Michigan City, after an illness of several months. Mr. White was born on Jan. 13, 1865, in Leavenworth county, Kansas. He came to LaPorte county in 1911 and resided on a farm in Galena township until last November when he was forced to retire on account of ill health.
  Mr. White was united in marriage to Florence Hull on Seb. (sp. as in obit) 21, 1893 (could be 1898 but it does NOT look like 1895 as on the marker) at Chandler, Okla.
  He is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Farly of Joplin, Mo., and Frances Meyer of Michigan City; one son, Charles F. White of Milwaukee; one brother, Reuben S. White of Milwaukee, Wis., and 11 grandchildren.
  Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Sunday afternoon at Lambs Chapel, with the Rev. Mr. McMillan officiating. Burial will be in Lambs Chapel cemetery with Byron Hummer in charge."

White, Charles L. - Michigan City News, Friday 8 July 1932 p. 10, c. 2 - - - Charles L. White, of 312 East Fifth Street, passed away at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon in his home, after being ill for the past several months.
  Mr. White was born on Jan. 13, 1865, in Leavenworth county, Kansas the son of John and Mary White. He and Florence Hull were united in marriage in Changler, Okla., on Feb. 21, 1893. One son, Charles F. white, of Milwaukee, and two daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Farley of Joplin, Mo., and Mrs. Frances Meyer, of this city survive.
   He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, and by one brother, Reuben S. White, of Milwaukee, Wis. Mr. White came to Laporte county in 1911 and resided on a farm in Galena township. Due to illness, he was compelled to retire last November, and since December he has resided in this city.
  At 1:30 o'clock, daylight saving time, Sunday, there will be a short service at the residence, and at 1:30 o'clock, standard time, there will be short service at Lamb's Chapel, in Galena township. Rev. C. V. McMillin, of Rolling Prairie, will officiate, and interment will be in the Lamb's Chapel Cemetery. Friends may view the remains in the home Saturday evening, and until the hour of the services Sunday.

White, Edward & daughter Emily White - & - Whorwell, John and Mrs.   - Daily Herald, Tuesday, Aug 31, 1897 - The remains of Mr. and Mrs. John Whorwell, Edward Wright and Emily Wright which had been buried in the old part of Patton's cemetery were disinterred this morning and reintered in the new section. The remains of Mr. Whorwell had been in the ground 22 years and although the flesh had decomposed, the dress, hair, beard and bones were in their proper positions and the whole appearance was quite natural. Mrs. Whorwell's appearance was not as well preserved, she having been buried 35 years. The hair and bear of Mr. Wright had grown since his death and although his flesh had disappeared the clothing reposed naturally. He died 20 years ago, while the remains of his daughter, Emily, were intered 38 years ago. Very little but the bones remained of the latter.

The funeral is at 1 p.m. Saturday at Door Village United Methodist Church, LaPorte, with the Revs. David Schrader and Michael Heath officiating. Burial is at Door Village Cemetery, LaPorte. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, and from noon until the time of service Saturday at the church.
Mrs. White was born June 11, 1914, in Campbellsville, Ky., to William H. and Florence Harger McVay. On June 15, 1933, in North Dakota, she married Fredrick E. White who died August 23, 1985.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice (Lawrence) Buell, Indianapolis; a granddaughter, Amy Buell MacNeil, Cameroon, West Africa; and two grandsons, David Buell, Silver Spring, Md., and Lawrence Buell, Jr., Indianapolis, and five great-grandchildren. Three sisters and three brothers preceded her in death.
Mrs. White was a credit manager at Montgomery Ward. Mr. and Mrs. White owned and operated White Motor Sales for many years in LaPorte. They spent their years together in LaPorte and in later years spent the winter months in Eustis. She was a Door Village United Methodist Church Member. Whitehead - Daily Herald, Wed, November 15, 1893: The home of Mr. and Mrs. John Whitehead was made sad last week, by the death of their little son, John, his father's namesake. He was the youngest of the family, being four years old. The funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, and the remains were buried at the Baptist cemetery. Rev. O.L. Prentice spoke words of comfort to the sorrowing ones .

WHITMAN, SUSAN L. - From unknown newspaper, July 1899    Susan L. Whitman was born in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, Dec. 31, 1810. Died at the residence of Mr. Wm. Zigler, July 12, 1899. Aged 88 years, 7 months, 11 days. She was married to Edward Whitman in 1844. Three children were born to them, all of which are living. Soon after her marriage they emmigrated to the United States where she has since lived. When 16 years of age she joined the Baptist church, retaining her membership in the church until her death. She was greatly interested in the success and progress of the cause of her Lord and Master. Gave of her means and strength for the success of the same. She was a lover of books. The Bible was her constant companion. Her mind was well stored with its great and inspiring truths. Her spiritual vision was clear; her sympathics broad. She now rests from her labors. In peace she sleeps, the sleep of the just. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. F. Ayres at the family residence yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock p. m. Interment at Rolling Prairie.

Wick, Rose, Mrs.   -  Westville Indicator, June 15, 1905  Mrs. Rose Wick, who lived in the home of Herman Wothke, in Clinton township died Tuesday. The girl took rough on rats more than a week ago, and continued to take doses of the drug daily with suicidal intent, and although questioned, refused to confess the act until near death. The young lady was an orphan whose only related is a sister residing in Wabash.

Wilcox 35, who died April 29, 1945 in Australia, husband of Maria Wilcox of 610 Fifteenth street, La Porte will arrive in La Porte Tuesday and funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the grave in Pine Lake cemetery. Dr. Charles R. Naftzger will officiate. The American Legion will have charge of the services at the grave. O. M. Haverstock is in charge of arrangements. The son of George and Elizabeth Wilcox, he was born in La Porte on May 10, 1909 and had lived here all his life. He was married in La Porte to Maria Rodriguez. Surviving besides his wife are one brother Howard Wilcox of La Porte; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Corrish and Mrs. John Long, both of La Porte.

Wilcox, Mrs. Elizabeth -- The Herald-Argus, Thursday, April 11, 1946 page 4. Mrs. Elizabeth Wilcox, 59, of 111 McClung road, died at 12:27 this morning at her home after an illness of six months. The daughter of Henry and Anna Herdon, she was born in La Porte on Sept. 27, 1886, and had lived here all her life. In February, 1902, in La Porte, she was married to George Wilcox who died in 1933. She was a member of the Christian church. Surviving are one son, Howard Wilcox, La Porte; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Corish, Rolling Prairie, and Mrs. John E. Long, La Porte; one grandson; two sisters, Mrs. L.A. Bolster, and Mrs. Anna Beam, both of La Porte. One daughter died in infancy and one son, Dorland Wilcox, died overseas in 1945. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the Haverstock chapel with the Rev. H.L. Conley officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery. Wilhelm, John A.   -LaPorte Daily Argus -- 8 May 1922,    John A. Wilhelm, 67, died at 11:25 Saturday night at his home, 202 Twelfth street. He was born October 3, 1854, in LaPorte County, and lived here all his life. Until two years ago, he was a farmer. On Nov. 17, 1877, he married Miss Mary Blank of Galena. Those who survive besides his wife are: Daughters, Mrs. William Dahl, Mrs. Charles Dahl, Mrs. Henry Reinfurth, Mrs. Norah Bolin and Florence Wilhelm; five granchildren; two brothers, Frank and Herman; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Blank, Mrs. Mary Byer and Mrs. Anna Scheeler all of LaPorte County. The funeral will be at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in Salem chapel, Rev. G.G. Bratzell officiating, with interment in Salem chapter. L.A. Decker is in charge. - - Name of sender: Michele Cuff

Williams, Esther (Teeter) - La Porte Daily Argus --2 Feb 1925, Esther Teeter Williams, second daughter of Zachariah and Martha Teeter, was born near Laporte on Sept 11, 1850, and died on Feb. 10, this year, at the home of her son, Henson Williams, at the age of 74 years 5 months and 8 days.
  She became the wife of Benjamin Williams on April 5, 1868, who proceded her in death, March 1, 1895. To this union eight children were born, seven of whom are still living. One son, Joseph, died in 1901.
  The children who survive are Mrs. Orpha McDuffie, Michawaka; Mrs. Ethel Lake, New Buffalo, Mich; Mrs. Bertha Bull, Michigan City; the Rev. Mone Williams, Vicksburg, Mich; Mrs. Bessie Crawford, Michigan City; Benson Williams, Three Oaks, Mich; and John Williams, Three Oaks. One sister, Mrs. Martha Woodard, Lansing, Mich., 12 grand-children and one great grandchild survive in addition to many nieced and nephews, other relatives and friends. 
  Mrs. Williams was converted to the Protestant Methodist church more than 50 years ago. She joined the Free Methodist church 47 years ago, being on the the eight charter members of Bunker Hill class.
  The house in which Mrs. Williams died was formerly a school house in which the Free Methodist meetings were held in the Bunker Hill community. The building was later remodeled into a dwelling.

Willis, Mary Elizabeth - Mary Elizabeth Willis, living at 808 Indiana venue, passed away at 11 o'clock last night, death following an illness of six weeks. Death was caused by asthma. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. A.T. Briggs, will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock. The services will be private. Interment will take place at Union Mills, with Cutler Bros. the directors. Mrs. Willis, who was 74 years old, was a native of LaPorte county, and was born March 1, 1849. She had been a resident of LaPorte for the past three months, making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Marie M. Mould. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mould, Mrs. Oscar Bremberg, of Glendale, Cal., and Mrs. F.L. Hovis, of Indianapolis, wife of a former pastor of the M.E. church at Union Mills. Wilson, James - Daily Herald, Friday, April 24, 1896.  James Wilson, alias Joseph Kirk, died in the Northern Prison yesterday at the age of 24 years. He was sent up from St. Joseph County late in the fall of 1894 to serve a four years' term. The remains were interred in the cemetery today. Consumption was the cause of death. (note: the Northern Prison is what is known today as Indiana State Prison)

Wiltfong, Barbara - Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus. Mrs. Barbara Wiltfong died Sunday evening at her home in Wills Township, of old age, she being 91 years, 11 months, and two days old. She was born in Pennsylvania April 26, 1824 and was the mother of 13 children, of who eight survive her. They are George, William, Monroe, Joseph, Louis, Mrs. Elizabeth Reed, Mrs. Hannah Wright, and Mrs. Carolina Harness. Her husband died nine years ago. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon, leaving the home at 2 o’clock, with services at the Sauktown church at 2:20. Burial at Sauktown cemetery. Weir & Petering are the funeral directors.

    Mrs. Belle Wiltfong, 77, wife of Lewis Wiltfong of Mill Creek, died at 11 o'clock last night at her home following an illness of three weeks. The daughter of David and Phoebe Ostrander, she was born in Rolling Prairie, on Feb. 20, 1866 and had lived in this vicinity nearly all her life. On Oct. 29, 1880 in South Bend, she was married to Lewis Wiltfong who survives her. She was a member of the Sauktown Christian church. Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Howard D. of Wanatah, and Lloyd D. of LaPorte; one daughter, Mrs. Wanda Page, Mill Creek; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. One son, Paul, preceded her in death in 1923. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:15 pm at home and at 3 o'clock from the Sauktown Christian church, with the Rev. G.C. Rambo officiating.     Mrs. Betsey E. C. Wiltfong: Mrs. Betsey Elizabeth Chambers Wiltfong age 87, of rural rt. 4, LaPorte, died at 8 o’clock this morning at the Holy Family Hospital as the result of shock from a broken hip which she received in a fall last Saturday. Mrs. Wiltfong was born March 29, 1850 in Hanna Indiana, the daughter of Jack and Caroline Chambers. She lived in LaPorte County all her life. She was married to Daniel A. Wiltfong in 1909. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Edward Sister, rural route 4 LaPorte, two sons, Monroe, Rural route 3 LaPorte and Marian, LaPorte; 9 grandchildren, one great grand child, one sister Mrs. Arvilla Moyer, LaPorte and one brother Charles Chambers of Wichita, Kansas. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:15 at the Haverstock in LaPorte and at 2 p.m. at Sauktown cemetery. Reverend Clayton H. Wilson will officiate.

Wiltfong, Clarence E. - Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus August 24, 1982. Clarence E. Wiltfong, 59, of 3061E CR-300S., LaPorte, died Monday August 23 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana following an illness of eight weeks. He was born August 26, 1922, in LaPorte County, to Monroe and Lilly (Kimmel) Wiltfong and had lived here all his life. He was a member of FOP LaPorte, VFW Post 1130, American Legion Post 400, Fish Lake, Indiana, PNA 1120 and was a veteran of WWII. He was employed by Modine Mfg., Company and was a member of its 20-year Club. On September 26, 1948, in Valparaiso, he married Helen Paxton who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dan (Esther) Jennele, of Pounding Mill, VA., and Dorothy, at home; four sons, Charles and David, both of Michigan City, Delbert of LaPorte, and Robert of North Liberty; seven granddaughters; two brothers, Wilson of LaPorte and Henry of Jamestown, NY; and four sisters, Mrs. Jesse (Mary) Freese and Mrs. Betsy Jane Stevens, both of LaPorte, Mrs. Don (Frona) Willis of Michigan City and Mrs. Ruth Mitch of Carlisle, Iowa. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Taylor and Rev. Richard Blair officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Wednesday and until the time of services Thursday. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery.

WILTFONG, CONNIE FAY - Connie Fay Wiltfong, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wiltfong, 801 1/2 Park street, died at the Holy Family hospital Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. She was born Friday and lived 15 hours. Surviving are the parents,; two brothers, George and John, at home; the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schroer, and Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Wiltfong, LaPorte. The funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 11 o’clock at the Sauktown church with Rev. Snodgrass officiating.    Eileen Clara Wiltfong, the eldest daughter of Melvin and Emma Wiltfong, was born at Mill Creek, Dec 23, 1906, and died March 11, 1921. She leaves besides her parents, one sister, Eunice, and both grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schultz of LaPorte, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wiltfong of Mill Creek, and other relatives and friends. She was attending the high school at Mill Creek and was in the eighth grade. The loss of Eileen is a great shock to the community as her smiling faced and her pleasant disposition helped to inspire job in other people's hearts. Like a flower at its beauty giving joy and pleasure to the world which when at its best drops its petal to the ground and is scattered to mother earth, only to again bring happiness in later days so Eileen, although she has left this world, she is not dead--she only sleeps.     Obituary: The young daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wiltfong who resides at the corner of Tipton and Main streets, died Sunday night after a protracted illness of some months. The funeral took place in the Christian church at Sauktown, Rev. R.H. Saunders of this city officiating.

   Miss Enola Eldora Wiltfong, 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Wiltfong, passed away Saturday at 9:30 am at the home in Lincoln township after an illness of five days. The girl was born in Lincoln township on July 18, 1921, and lived there all her life. Surviving, in addition to the parents, are four sisters, Floy Leslie, Alice, Mae, Leota Madelene and Oda Darlene Wiltfong; two brothers, Marcena Benhart Wiltfong and Russell Marvin Wiltfong of Mill Creek, seven aunts, nine uncles and a number of other relations. Funeral services were to be held at the Mill Creek Baptist church this afternoon, the Rev. Mark L. Marshall of LaPorte officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery, with O.M. Haverstock in charge. Wiltfong, Ernest – The Daily Bulletin, Mon, Apr 25, 1898, pg.4
    Earnest Wiltfong, second and only son of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Wiltfong, died at the home of his father near Stillwell, Sunday morning at four o'clock of diphtheria. The funeral was held from the house at 11 o'clock Sunday morning in accordance to the laws of the board of health. Austin Cutler had charge of the funeral. This is the second member of that family to be stricken down with that dreaded disease within two weeks. The strictest kind of care has been taken to guard against the disease spreading. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

    George W. Wiltfong, age 90, formerly of this city, passed away at 2:35 this morning at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. David Woodcox in Teegarden, Ind. Mr. Wiltfong, a member of La Porte lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose, was the oldest member of that order in Indiana. He was a life member of the local lodge, and also a life member of the second degree of the lodge. The son of Samuel and  (Hostetler) Wiltfong, he was born in LaPorte county on Aug. 19, 1843. He lived here all his life until about a year ago when he went to make his home with his daughter at Teegarden. He was a retired farmer. In 1862 in LaPorte county, he married Priscilla Dawson, who passed away on March 3, 1916. He was a member of the Christian church. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Woodcox; two sons, Joseph and Edward Wiltfong of New Carlisle; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, William Wiltfong of Buchanan, Mich., Monroe Wiltfong of New Carlisle and Louis Wiltfong of Mill Creek. Three sons preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Sauktown church. Members of La Porte lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose probably will take charge of the services. All members are requested to meet at Moose Temple here at 1 p.m. Monday and those who have cars are asked to drive them. Burial will be in Sauktown cemetery with E.E. Ebbert in charge. The body may be viewed tomorrow afternoon and evening at the Ebbert undertaking parlors.

Wiltfong, Herman Morris - Obituary in the Herald Argus March 31, 1926. Herman Morris Wiltfong, 13-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Wiltfong, residing one and a half miles from Springville, died at 2 o’clock this morning after an illness of one week. The child was born Feb. 18, 1925. He is survived by his parents, three brothers, Wilson, Henry, and Clarence; and one sister, Mary.     Joseph Allen Wiltfong, age, 64, of Mill Creek, died this morning at 3 o’clock The son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Wiltfong. Mr. Wiltfong was born in Sauktown, Wills township, Nov. 20, 1864, living in this county all his life. He married Miss Clara Elivra Collom of Mill Creek in Galien, Michigan November 1, 1885. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. Surviving are three sons, Melvin Allen Wiltfong, Clifford Merle Wiltfong, and Russel Glenn Wiltfong all of Mill Creek; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Bell Hefferman of Washington, D.D. and Mrs. Kathryn Leslie Replogle of Mill Creek; 14 grandchildren; and four brothers, George Wiltfong and Monroe Wiltfong of New Carlisle, William Wiltfong of South bend, and Lewis Wiltfong of Wills township. Funeral services will be held at the Mill Creek Baptist church Saturday morning at 10:30. S. Arthur Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with E.E. Ebbert in charge.

Wiltfong, Mrs. Lillie (Iverson) - Obituary: Monday February 22, 1954. Mrs. Lillie (Iverson) Wiltfong, 57, of Route 5 died at 8 o’clock yesterday morning at the Fairview hospital after an illness of two years. She was born April 13, 1896 in Booneville, Indiana. On March 30, 1913 she was married in Mount Vernon, Indiana to Charles M. Wiltfong, who survives. She lived in LaPorte County for the past 40 years. Besides her husband survivors are four daughter, Mrs. Jesse Freese and Mrs. Hughey Mitch Laporte. Mrs. Arthur Stevens and Mrs. Donald Willis, Kingsfrod Heights. Three sons William, Henry and Clarence, all of Laporte. two brothers, William Edwards, Evansville Indiana, and Lloyd Kimmel, Griffin Indiana and 21 grandchildren. Her mother SUSAN KIMMEL, and one sister proceeded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Haverstock Chapel with Rev. James A. West officiating.     Mr. Luella C. Wilfong died at the hospital last night after being confined there but a few days. She was 30 years of age.

Wiltfong, Marion - Marion Wiltfong -Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus February 23, 1957. Marion Wiltfong, 72, of 201 West Twelfth Street, died at 1:35 this morning at the Holy Family hospital after a one-year illness. He was born April 22, 1885 in LaPorte to Daniel and Betsy Wiltfong and was a lifetime LaPorte resident. Mr. Wiltfong was a painter and decorator for 22 years and an employee of the state highway department for 16 years. He was married Dec. 31, 1908 to Hattie Jane Shippee. He was a member of the First Baptist church. Surviving are his wife; one son, Marion Wiltfong, Jr., LaPorte; one brother, one sister and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Haverstock Funeral home with the Rev. Wilber H. Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in Patton cemetery. Friends may call at the Haverstock chapel tomorrow noon and until time of services.

    Mrs. Priscilla Dawson Wiltfong, wife of George Wiltfong, was born September 4, 1843. She departed this life March 3, 1916, at the age of 72 years and six months. To this union were born seven children. Three departed this life, one at the age of five, one at the age of three, and the other in its infancy. Four survive their mother, Edward Wiltfong, James Wiltfong, Mrs. Bertha Woodcox, and Joseph Wiltfong. She is survived by her husband, George Wiltfong, and one sister, Mrs. Clark Wilcox, and one brother, Alfred Colman, and six grandchildren. She united with the Christian church at Sauktown about 30 years ago under the preaching of Brother Finley. Rev. Franklin, of South Bend, will officiate at the burial. Weir & Petering are the funeral directors. Burial in Sauktown Cemetery.

    Samuel Wiltfong died yesterday afternoon at his home at Sauktown. He was born at Lincoln, Ontario, Canada, May 19, 1923, and came to LaPorte County sixty-five years ago. Six sons, George, Daniel, Monroe, and William of South Bend. Joseph and Lewis, and two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Reed and Mrs. Hattie Harness, survive their father. The funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock at the church at Sauktown. Rev. Black officiating. The interment will take place in the adjoining cemetery. Weir & Selvert are in charge.

Wiltfong, William W. Sr., - Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus. The funeral for Mr. William W. Wiltfong, Sr., 83, of 1530 Sallwasser Dr., LaPorte will be Monday at 11 am at Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Nye officiating. He died Thursday, March 12, 1998 at his home. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the organization of the donor’s choice. He was born Sept. 15, 1914 in LaPorte County to Charles Monroe and Lillian (Kimmel) Wiltfong and lived in LaPorte all his life. Mr. Wiltfong was a US Army veteran of World War II, a member of Indiana and American Angus Associations, AARP and was a senior partner of 3-W Cattle Company. He was employed by LaPorte Schools from 1946 to 1959, then by South Bend Toy Company until he retired in 1977. He married Evelyn I. Schroeder May 11, 1946 who died May 14, 1980. Surviving are one daughter, Stella Naegele of LaPorte; three sons, William Jr. and Wendell both of LaPorte and Walter of Rolling Prairie; 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and four sisters; May Freese, Betsy J. Stevens, and Ruth Mitch all of LaPorte, and Frona Willis of Arizona. He was preceded in death by three sons, one grandson, his parents, and one brother.

WILLIAMS, BENJAMIN – Michigan City Dispatch, 7 March 1895 - - - Galena Gleanings News comes to us that Mr. Benj. Williams who lived near Bunker Hill schoolhouse, is dead. We did not learn anything more concerning the death. We are very sorry, as Mr. Williams was an honest, quiet citizen and a good temperance worker, and will be missed by many. Burial in Rolling Prairie Cemetery.

Williams, P. E. Mrs., - Westville Indicator, June 15, 1905 - Mrs. P.E. Williams died at the family home 2 1/2 miles east of town Monday, after an illness extending over a year. Mrs. Williams was 85 years of age and is survived by her aged husband, two daughters, Mrs. Tom Cole, of Blue Island, Ill., and Mrs. M. Francis and one son, Wm., both the latter residents of this county. The funeral services were conducted by a minister from Laporte of the Catholic faith, at the home yesterday and her body, was interred in the Pinhook cemetery. Mrs. Williams was a patient sufferer, and the home is bereft of one whose interests were always for those she loved.

Willis, Mary Elizabeth - The Argus - Thursday, September 13, 1923 - page 4    Mary Elizabeth Willis, living at 808 Indiana Avenue, passed away at 11 o'clock last night, death following an illness of six weeks. Death was caused by asthma. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. A.T. Briggs, will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock. The services will be private. Interment will take place at Union Mills, with Cutler Bros., the directors.
  Mrs. Willis, who was 74 years old, was a native of LaPorte county, and was born March 1, 1849. She had been a resident of LaPorte for the past three months, making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Marie M. Mould. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mould, Mrs. Oscar Bremberg, of Glendale, Cal., and Mrs. F.L. Hovis, of Indianapolis, wife of a former pastor of the M.E. church at Union Mills. She was a member of the Advent Christian church.

Wilson, Sarah (Mayes) – Daily Argus Bulletin (La Porte), May 29, 1907
   Mrs. Sarah Wilson died in her home in Galena township at 8 o’clock last evening. She had suffered with heart disease and other complications for the past three years, and they were the cause of death. The funeral will be on Friday morning, with service in the Hesston chapel at 10:30 o’clock conducted by Rev. Mr. Reder of Rolling Prairie. The burial will be in the Hesston cemetery, Weir & Sievert being in charge. Mrs. Wilson was born on the place and in the home in which she died. She was 58 years old, being born on November 17, 1848. She had no children. Three brothers and two sisters survive – James and William Mayes, of Galena township, Wesley Mayes of this city, Mrs. Mary McDuffy of Wolcott, Ind., and Mrs. Deborah Borus of this county. As the daughter of Matthew Mayes, who came from Pennsylvania and settled in Galena township in 1834, Mrs. Wilson was related to many of the best families in the county. Her father was a prominent citizen of this day, farming 400 acres in section 18 on the Michigan line. Her husband, Ellicott Wilson, was one of the 100 victims of the Astabula railroad wreck on December 29, 1876, a few years after their marriage.

WILTFONG, CONNIE FAY – LaPorte Herald Argus, Mon, Dec 15, 1947    Connie Fay Wiltfong, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wiltfong, 801 1/2 Park Street, died at the Holy Family hospital Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. She was born Friday and lived 15 hours. Surviving are the parents, two brothers, George and John, at home; the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schroer, and Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Wiltfong, LaPorte. Funeral services were held the morning at the Haverstock chapel with burial in Pinhook cemetery.

The child was born Feb. 18, 1925. He is survived by his parents, three brothers, Wilson, Henry, and Clarence; and one sister, Mary. The funeral was held from the house at 11 o'clock Sunday morning in accordance to the laws of the board of health. Austin Cutler had charge of the funeral. This is the second member of that family to be stricken down with that dreaded disease within two weeks. The strictest kind of care has been taken to guard against the disease spreading. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

   Eileen Clara Wiltfong, the eldest daughter of Melvin and Emma Wiltfong, was born at Mill Creek, Dec 23, 1906, and died March 11, 1921. She leaves besides her parents, one sister, Eunice, and both grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schultz of LaPorte, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wiltfong of Mill Creek, and other relatives and friends. She was attending the high school at Mill Creek and was in the eighth grade. The loss of Eileen is a great shock to the community as her smiling faced and her pleasant disposition helped to inspire job in other people's hearts. Like a flower at its beauty giving joy and pleasure to the world which when at its best drops its petal to the ground and is scattered to mother earth, only to again bring happiness in later days so Eileen, although she has left this world, she is not dead--she only sleeps.    Miss Enola Eldora Wiltfong, 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Wiltfong, passed away Saturday at 9:30 am at the home in Lincoln township after an illness of five days. The girl was born in Lincoln township on July 18, 1921, and lived there all her life. Surviving, in addition to the parents, are four sisters, Floy Leslie, Alice, Mae, Leota Madelene and Oda Darlene Wiltfong; two brothers, Marcena Benhart Wiltfong and Russell Marvin Wiltfong of Mill Creek, seven aunts, nine uncles and a number of other relations. Funeral services were to be held at the Mill Creek Baptist church this afternoon, the Rev. Mark L. Marshall of LaPorte officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery, with O.M. Haverstock in charge. The daughter of David and Phoebe Ostrander, she was born in Rolling Prairie, on Feb. 20, 1866 and had lived in this vicinity nearly all her life. On Oct. 29, 1880 in South Bend, she was married to Lewis Wiltfong who survives her. She was a member of the Sauktown Christian church. Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Howard D. of Wanatah, and Lloyd D. of LaPorte; one daughter, Mrs. Wanda Page, Mill Creek; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. One son, Paul, preceded her in death in 1923. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:15 pm at home and at 3 o'clock from the Sauktown Christian church, with the Rev. G.C. Rambo officiating. Wiltfong: Mrs. Betsey Elizabeth Chambers Wiltfong age 87, of rural rt. 4, LaPorte, died at 8 o’clock this morning at the Holy Family Hospital as the result of shock from a broken hip which she received in a fall last Saturday. Mrs. Wiltfong was born March 29, 1850 in Hanna Indiana, the daughter of Jack and Caroline Chambers. She lived in LaPorte County all her life. She was married to Daniel A. Wiltfong in 1909. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Edward Sister, rural route 4 LaPorte, two sons, Monroe, Rural route 3 LaPorte and Marian, LaPorte; 9 grandchildren, one great grand child, one sister Mrs. Arvilla Moyer, LaPorte and one brother Charles Chambers of Wichita, Kansas. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:15 at the Haverstock in LaPorte and at 2 p.m. at Sauktown cemetery. Reverend Clayton H. Wilson will officiate.

    George W. Wiltfong, age 90, formerly of this city, passed away at 2:35 this morning at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. David Woodcox in Teegarden, Ind. Mr. Wiltfong, a member of La Porte lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose, was the oldest member of that order in Indiana. He was a life member of the local lodge, and also a life member of the second degree of the lodge. The son of Samuel and Barbara (Hostetler) Wiltfong, he was born in LaPorte county on Aug. 19, 1843. He lived here all his life until about a year ago when he went to make his home with his daughter at Teegarden. He was a retired farmer. In 1862 in LaPorte county, he married Priscilla Dawson, who passed away on March 3, 1916. He was a member of the Christian church. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Woodcox; two sons, Joseph and Edward Wiltfong of New Carlisle; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, William Wiltfong of Buchanan, Mich., Monroe Wiltfong of New Carlisle and Louis Wiltfong of Mill Creek. Three sons preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Sauktown church. Members of La Porte lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose probably will take charge of the services. All members are requested to meet at Moose Temple here at 1 p.m. Monday and those who have cars are asked to drive them. Burial will be in Sauktown cemetery with E.E. Ebbert in charge. The body may be viewed tomorrow afternoon and evening at the Ebbert undertaking parlors.

The La Porte Herald say, death of Lewis Wilkinson II at Chicago, on Dec 17th was caused by paralysis. He was buried in Door Village Ind. He was born Feb., 4 1834 in Gennessee Co., New York and came to Indiana in 1837. During the 50's he invented a cultivator and established a factory for it manuacturing under a Prison Contract at Michigan City. Disposing of the he embarked in the hardware business at Bremen. In 1880 me moved to Dakota but for the past 12 years he has lived in Chicago. He leaves a widow, one son and one daughter.   A man named Purcell put up a lathe for turning wooden bowls, on Mud creek, near the school-house known as "Mud Creek School-house." The enterprise proved unsuccessful, and Joseph Winch afterward bought the establishment and made splint-bottom chairs and spinning-wheels."

  "Joseph Winch bought the concern, his product being spinning wheels and splitbottom chairs. Mr. Winch was a Free Will Baptist preacher who came to the county in 1838 and died February 10, 1854. Winch, Joseph F. - Michigan City News, Dec 6, 1911, Page 4, Col 2    Joseph F. Winch, who was born in Galena township, this county, from an old resident family in 1853, died at the residence of his brother, Bolin Winch in Kansas City, Mo., Nov. 29. The body of the deceased was brought to this county accompanied by his wife and brother, for burial in the Foster cemetery in Galena township. The funeral services were held Sunday, at 11 a.m. at the residence of the late Capt. A.B. Austin in Galena township, who was a half brother of the deceased. The deceased had been living in Seattle for the past ten years, and was on his way east to visit relatives and was taken sick enroute. Burial in Foster Cemetery.

Norman (Norm) Lee Wineholt, 66, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family, Wednesday night, April 25, 2012. He had fought cancer bravely and with dignity for the past eight months. Born June 27, 1945 with his twin sister Norma Jean (Wineholt) Meyer, Norm was the son of Russell and Hazel (Tryon) Wineholt. Growing up in the family farmhouse in La Porte, he worked on the Wineholt farm milking cows. He graduated from South Central High School, where he had been an athlete, as part of its first graduating class in 1963. Studies at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana were interrupted in March 1967 by a call from the Army. Norm spent the next three years serving his country, including duty in Vietnam where he was an Aircraft Electrician, working on Chinook helicopters.
  After his discharge, he returned to Purdue to earn his degree in Agricultural Economics in May 1971, and his dedication to his alma mater had begun. Always a hard worker, Norm held many and varied jobs. At Purdue he worked several jobs to help defray costs including bus boy and dishwasher at his dormitory, Carey Hall, Co-Rec Supervisor and Purdue Campus Police at the Purdue Airport-Hanger 4. His work history also includes serving as a Purdue Extension Agent in Connersville, Indiana, and working for Wickes Buildings in Fairmont, Indiana. In February 1978, Norm began what his name has come to be synonymous with, Wineholt Construction, Inc., in Anderson, Indiana. After suffering a serious accident on the job in 1982, Norm relocated Wineholt Construction back home to La Porte where it has remained to this day. Norm’s life became complete when he married Kathryn Carol Rosander on October 13, 1984. Ever since, they have lived and worked side by side, with Kathy operating the office for Wineholt Construction. In 2009 they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in Hawaii. They have two daughters, Lindsey Lee Marie Wineholt (Austin, Texas) and Carlee Rachel Ruth Wineholt (La Porte). For Norm, an avid Boilermaker fan, the sun rose and set in the faces of his daughters, despite them both being I.U. students. His greatest joys included traveling with Kathy and his girls, Purdue football and basketball (Norm attended many football and basketball games and other alumni events including both Boilermaker appearances in the Rose Bowl, 1967 and 2001 with Kathy, a converted Boiler fan), golf (he could swing a mean left-handed golf club), and a bowl of popcorn and milk. Proud of the many building projects within his community, Norm would take the girls on drives past his completed projects. Many of his buildings won recognition as Building of the Year from Borkholder’s Buildings including the years 1996 through 2001, 2006 and 2007. Pleased to have worked with brother-in-law Lloyd Rosander for 22 years, he was greatly appreciative of Lloyd assuming the day-to-day operation of the business for Norm. Well known and thought of throughout the community, Norm tried to begin most days with a donut and coffee at the coffee shop just down the road from home, talking to neighbors and friends. He took an interest in local affairs, such as 4-H, and served as President of the Kingsbury Cemetery Association. Norm is survived by wife Kathy, daughters Lindsey and Carlee, cousins Dan (Susan) Wineholt and Tom Wineholt, both of La Porte and numerous brothers and sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, business associates and countless friends, as Norm made all who met him feel like a friend. Proceeding in death were his sister Norma Jean (1986), parents Hazel (1989) and Russell (2004) and Uncle George and Aunt Marie Wineholt. A Celebration of Life Service for Norm will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Service with Rev. John Beehler officiating. A time of visitation will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 p.m. until the time of the service at the Funeral Home. Wolfe, Mrs. Caroline  - New Dispatch - Thursday, Sept., 19, 1935 Pg 3 C1 - - Mrs. Caroline Matilda (Stolp) Wolfe, of Coolspring township, died Wednesday morning at the Clinic hospital after an illness of two months. Death was attribute to a combination of ailents.  Mrs. Wolfe was born Jan. 28, 1847 in West Prussia, Germany. She came to America when 12 years old. She was married Feb 26, 1869 in Westville to John Wolfe, who died Dec 21, 1900.
  She is survived by a son, William and a daughter Miss Minnie Wolfe both residing at home. Two children preceded her in death.
Mrs. Wolfe was a member of the Lutheran church. She was very well known, especially by the residents of Waterford.
  Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, central time or 3 o'clock daylight savings time, at the Hummer mortuary. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Rev. Emil Kemena will officiate. Freinds may call at the Hummer Mortuary this evening and Friday.

Wolfe, William - News Dispatch - 16 May, 1944 Page 1 Col 3. - Farmer Hangs Self in Barn - Body of William Wolfe, 65 Discovered by 3 boys.
   William Wolfe, 65, Bachelor, farmer, residing two miles south of Waterford, on the Wozniak Road, in ill-health for some time past, hanged himself in a barn on his farm yesterday noon.
Three boys, whose names were not learned, found the body and notified a neighbor, who in turn called County Coroner, Dr. Russell L. Beck.
  Investigation by the Coroner disclosed the man had taken the mail into the house, in which he lived alone, at 12 noon yesterday, the mailman having delivered some letters at that time. None of the letters, however, revealed any new reason for the subsequent action.
  Wolfe, who weighed well over 200 pounds, is supposed to have gone to the barn attached the rope to a beam, slipped the noosed around his neck while sitting on the edge of the haymow and then swung himself into (--article was continued on Page 2 col. 5 ---) space.  When found, his feet just cleared the floor and by standing on tip toe he could have avoided stangulation, which, the coroner pronounced as cause of death.
  The trio of youngsters, playing in the vicinity, wandered in to the barn and were considerably frightened by the sight. They ran to a field where William Miller, a neighbor and renter of land from Wolfe, was working. Miller ran to the scene and then called Dr. Beck.
  The deceased was born in the vicinity in which he lived and his last close relative, a sister, died in December - 1941. So far as could be learned by the coroner in his preliminary investigation, the inquest is to be held Friday afternoon, there are no other family members in this family.
  Wolfe was of distant kin to the late Julius Kroll, who was buried today and had made plans to attend the funeral.
  Mr. Wolfe was born April 9, 1878 on the same farm where he died, the son of John and Caroline Wolfe.
  Funeral services will be held a 2 p. m. Thursday at the Hummer Mortuary with Rev. D. C. Ford officiating. Burial will be in Grenwood. Friends may call at Hummer's Wedneday afternoon and evening an Thursday.

   Well-known West Side Grocer expired early today following a lingering illness
   Death came to Fred Wolgast at 2:10 o'clock this morning in the family home, 1311 Elston Street. He had been ailing several months. His death was attributed to heart trouble. He was taken to St. Anthony Hospital on Aug. 23, and, after a three-week stay there, returned to his home, feeling much improved. He had a relapse on Oct. 4, and the early morning of today marked the coming of the death messenger.
  He was born on May 18, 1885, in Michigan City, a son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Wolgast. Fred attended St. Paul's Parochial school and was confirmed by Rev. H. C. Wickenmeyer in 1899.
  On Sept. 1, 1908, Mr. Wolgast and Miss Clara Reetz, daughter of Ernest Reetz, were united in marriage. Besides the widow, he is survived by one daughter, Miss Mildred Wolgast, his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Wolgast, two brothers, Henry and Louis Wolgast, and two sisters, Mrs. Louis Heuck and Mrs. Herman Joers, of Michigan City. In his younger years, Fred Wolgast worked for Herman Zeese, dry goods merchant. Mr. Wolgast was engaged in the grocery business at 325 Willard Ave. for a number of years, having been successful. He was well and favorably known, and in his death many mourn. The sympathy of the community goes out to the grief-stricken relatives. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Fred Wolgast was affiliated with Michigan City Lodge 432, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; Michigan City aerie, 1228, Fraternal Order of Eagles; S. Karpen Benefit society and the St. Paul's Aid Society.
  The funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Armin Paul Meyer, pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the family home, 1311 Elston street. Rev. Meyer will speak in English and German. Friends may view the body at any time after Sunday noon. (note: burial in Greenwood Cemetery)

Wood, Mrs Marguerite Gross - "Herald-Argus" newspaper March 6, 1946 - - -Marguerite Gross Wood, 33, wife of Fred Wood of 5840 Summit Street, Sylvania, Ohio died at 11 o'clock yesterday morning in a Toledo hospital. The daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter B. Gross, she was born on August 7, 1913 in LaPorte. On May 1, 1935, in LaPorte she was married to Fred Wood, son of Mr and Mrs G.H. Wood of this city. Surviving are her husband, four children, Frederick, James, Jean and an infant daughter, her parents, Mr and Mrs Walter B. Gross, 207 East Jefferson Avenue and one brother, George G. Gross of this city. Mrs Wood was a graduate of LaPorte High School and a member of the Miriam Benedict Chapter of the D.A.R. Woodard, Mrs. Martha (Teeter) - Herald Press, St. Joseph Michigan - January 2, 1945 - Wednesday - - - Three Oaks, Jan 2 (Special) - Mrs. Marha Woodard, 85, a long-time resident of Berrien county, died at 11:20 a. m. Tuesday at her home, 203 Cedar Street, where she had been ill for five days. Born Jan 4, 1860, in LaPorte County, Mrs. Woodard had lived most of her life in Three Oaks and vicinity, spending a few years in Indiana and Florida. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Zachariah Teeter, and returned her to live 9 years ago. Her husband the late Herman Woodard died five years ago. Mrs. Woodard was a member of the Free Methodist church.
She is survived by two children, Forrest, of Three Oaks: Mrs. Florence Cunningham, of Tampa, Fla, and a grandson, Kenneth Cunningham of Jackson.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:30 p. m. Friday at the L. E. Lake mortuary by the Rev. R. H. Heald, Free Methodist pastor. Burial will be made in the Rolling Prairie, Ind. cemetery.

   Death of Mrs. Caroline Woodward
   Mrs. Caroline Woodward passed peacefully away at 4 o'clock this morning, at her residence on Fourth Street, adding another well-known and universally respected pioneer to the list of those gone to the great beyond.
Friends desiring to see Mrs. Woodward will call at the house from 10 a. m. until 2 p. m. tomorrow.
Mrs. Woodward was born in the East 79 years ago. She and her husband were residents of this city for over thirty years. Her death was caused by cholera morbus and general prostration, she not having recovered from the shock caused by the death of her husband on the 18th of last month.
The funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian Church tomorrow at 3 p. m., the Rev. Mr. Hall of Warsaw conducting the services. Interment at Greenwood.

Wrase, Alfred - LaPorte Herald-Argus, 7/15/1919 - - Tuberculosis claimed another victim yesterday, when Alfred Wrase, 23 years old, discharged from the army because of the disease, died at his home, 411 Grove Street, at 4 o'clock. Wrase enlisted at Fort Thomas, Kentucky, Nov. 26, 1917, and served with the 237th and 245th Aerial Squadrons at Fort Bayard, New Mexico. He spent the last six months of his period in the service in the army hospital, having contacted Tuberculosis after his enlistment. He was discharged because of the disease on Nov. 22, 1918, and had to send home for money to pay for his fare to La Porte. After arriving home, Wrase made several ineffectual attempts to obtain his back pay, $60 bonus, and traveling allowance. His case was brought to the attention of the local Red Cross office, which took up the matter and got his money for him. Sometime later, also through the Red Cross, Wrase filed claim for compensation for total disability and also for insurance. Pension was also asked for his mother. These have been hanging fire several months, as the government machinery is slow. Wrase is survived by his mother, Louisa Paulus Wrase; four brothers, Walter, George, Fred, and Freeman; and three sisters, Edith, May, and Bertha. His father has been dead for some years. Weir & Ebbert have charge of funeral arrangements.
    Wrase, Alfred - LaPorte Herald-Argus, 7/17/1919 - - With three shots in the last salute to a dead comrade, taps was sounded over the grave of Alfred Wrase, who died Monday at his home, 411 Grove Street, as the returned soldier was laid to rest yesterday afternoon, with full military honors by Gray Post, of the American Legion. The funeral of Alfred Wrase was held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 from his home. Corporal Harry Hulz, of the American Legion, conducted the military burial, heading a firing squad of six men. Two brothers of the dead soldier, one a marine and the other a sailor, headed the pallbearers, all of whom were servicemen. In all, seventeen uniformed soldiers, and the sailor & marine, were present at the services, in addition to the immediate family and friends of the boy. The colors were not carried but draped around the casket. Interment was made in St. John's Lutheran cemetery.

Wrase, August F.W. – LaPorte Herald-Argus, 18 January 1904 - - "The friends of August F.W. Wrase, residing at 206 Madison Street, were pained yesterday to learn of his death, which occurred at noon at his home, after an illness of more than two years, five months of which time he had been confined to his bed. For 22 years Mr. Wrase had been connected with the Lakeshore railroad and during much of that time he held a position as section foreman, being considered one of the best on the entire system. August Frederick Wilhelm Wrase was born in Germany Aug. 4, 1852, and came to America in 1870, landing at the port of New York, April 18. All of the time since then, with the exception of a few months, he had made his home in LaPorte and by those who new him he was highly respected. He was a quiet man, never aggressive, but a good citizen. He was a man in whom President Roosevelt would have gloried, for he was an exemplification of the fact that race suicide is unknown here, having been the father of 13 children, ten of whom survive. The deceased leaves to mourn his departure the sorrowing wife and the following children: Walter Wrase of Whiting, and George, Nellie, Fred, Ida, Mary, Alfred, Frances, Bertha and Freeman Wrase of LaPorte. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Wrase of Chicago, and the following brothers and sisters: Herman Wrase of Mishawaka, William and Charles Wrase of Chicago, Fred Wrase of South Dakota, and Mrs. Lena Dolf, Mrs. Louis Gerkes and Mrs. Emil Homann of Chicago. The deceased was a member of St. John's German Lutheran church and also of the Benevolent society of that church. The funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at St. John's Lutheran church, Rev. Paul Eickstaedt officiating. The burial will take place at the Lutheran cemetery with Weir, Sievert, & Henrys in charge

Wrase, Frances Elizabeth - 2 December 1912 LaPorte Herald-Argus - - Frances Wrase died on the operating table at the Holy Family hospital at 11:30 o'clock this forenoon, where she was taken for an operation to remove a goiter. The funeral will be Wednesday afternoon at the German Lutheran church, Weir, Sievert, & Petering in charge. The deceased was born Oct. 27, 1894, in La Porte, the daughter of G. F. W. and Louise Wrase. The father died 8 years ago. The survivors are the mother, 5 brothers, Walter, George, Fred, Alfred, and Fremont, and three sisters, Matie, Edith, & Bertha. All survivors reside here with the exception of Miss Edith Wrase, living in Janesville, Wis."

Wrase, Fremong G - Fremont G. Wrase LaPorte Herald-Argus 22 January 1982 “Fremont G. Wrase, 81, of 8205 Oklahoma Ct., Merrillville, Ind., died Thursday, Jan. 21, at the Lutheran Home, Crown Point, Ind. He was born Nov. 27, 1900, in La Porte to Gustav and Louise (Paulis) Wrase, and lived in Merrillville 35 years, going there from La Porte. He had retired from the Internal Revenue Service, was a member of American Legion Post 83, La Porte, NARFE and was a veteran of W.W.I, serving on the U.S.S. George Washington on which President Woodrow Wilson traveled to sign the peace treaties. On May 18, 1925, in South Bend, Ind., he married Mary Koons who died April 23, 1936. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Andy (Betty) Fekete of Merrillville; Three nephews, Robert Purcell of Clinton, Md., Richard Wrase of Lakeville, Ind., and Gene Raymond of La Porte, and two nieces, Miss Helen Wrase and Mrs. Ralph (Lucille) Holtz, both of La Porte. Walter A. Wrase, - DeLAND, Fla: 81, formerly of LaPorte, died Saturday (Aug. 15, 1998) at his daughter's home in San Jose, Calif. A graveside service is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, with Pastor Joan Haney officiating. Cremation has taken place. Mr. Wrase was born June 9, 1917, in LaPorte, to Walter and Mrytle Hull Wrase. On Jan. 9, 1936, he married Thelma Craft, who preceded him in death in 1995. Survivors include one daughter, Lynda Stuart, San Jose; one son, Michael Wrase, DeLand; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Florence McCampbell, Lancaster, Calif., and Florence Wrase, South Bend. One brother, Richard Wrase, preceded him in death. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

   Mrs. Rebecca Wright, a widow, aged 86, who, with her husband, lived here many years ago, died Friday at her home in Newton, Iowa. She was a sister of Mrs. Laura Beadle of this city and of Edward Lanphier of South Bend, Daniel Lanphier of Newton, Iowa and Jed Lamphier of Indianapolis. all former residents of Michigan City." Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Death of Former Resident
   Mrs. Louisa Beadle received word Saturday of the death of her sister, Mrs. Rebecca Wright, which occurred Friday at her home in Newton, Iowa after a protracted illness. Mrs. Beadle spent several weeks with her sister this summer returning home when her sister showed signs of improvement. Mrs. Wright was 86 years old and was a resident of Michigan City before the Civil War. She is survived by three brothers, Edson Lanphier of South Bend, Jed Lanphier of Indianapolis and Daniel Lanphier of Newton, Iowa and by and adopted son, Henry Wright of Newton.
