Thompson, George Ledmond - Westville Indicator, June 15, 1905 - PIONEER RESIDENT GONE.
George Ledmond Thompson was born near Mt. Jackson, Shenandoah County, Virginia, on the 14th day of July 1824, and died Thursday, June 6, 1905, at 10 a.m. of infirmities of old age.
In 1838 Mr. Thompson came to Indiana arriving in Laporte County April 24th of that year and has continuously resided in this county to the time of his death. He was married to Harriet Soper on the first day of December 1850 and ever since his marriage has lived in Westville.
To this union was born six children, two girls and four boys, the girls and two boys preceding him to the great unknown. His widow, two sons, George L. and Ole, six grandchildren and one great grandchild are left to mourn his loss.
Mr. Thompson was a mason by trade and in the early days was much in demand in that line of work. In later years he took up the insurance business and for the past twenty-five years represented the best known firms, retiring only when the weight of years compelled rest.
For sixty-seven years he has lived among the citizens of Westville, where he was respected by all, and many, other than the family, will note his departure.
Mr. Thompson was a devoted and faithful member of the Mason and Odd Fellow fraternities, and was one of the oldest members in point of membership in either lodge in Westville. He was initiated Westville lodge, I.O.O.F. December 6, 1853, and after having served in all the principal offices was in 1877 elected to this office of Financial Secretary which position he filled continuously until Jan. 1st 1903. He was inducted into the mysteries of the Masonic order by Westville lodge No. 192 in January 1869, and in 1883 was elected to the same position in that lodge, secretary, as he then held in the I.O.O.F., where he continued to serve until death called him from his duties. Thus the financial matters between the orders and their members was presided over, carefully and without error for a quarter of a century by him, a truly remarkable record, and when able to attend he was always in his place.
But with all his loyalty to those fraternities home was always first with him and a loving husband and father has been called away.
The funeral services were conducted Sunday at 10 a.m. at the late home, Rev. Ballard of the Methodist church conducting the same. Mesdames D. W. Weed and S. A. Wight sang. Westville lodge, A. F. & A. M. No. 102 attended in a body and gave their services at the cemetery west of town where the body was interred. The obsequies were largely attended, there being Masonic brothers present from all the neighboring cities, and members of the home lodge living at a distance came to pay their last respects to the aged hero who had sheathed his sword. - Contributed by: Bonnie Dagen

TITUS - - Nelson J. Titus  - compilation of three obituaries Died 10 Sept 1898 - Obits published - 13 Sept. 1898 - - Nelson James Titus was born in Ashtabula, Ashtabula Co., Ohio on Nov 29, 1835. He came with his parents to LaPorte County when only three years of age. In this county he has resided continuous except three or four years spent in Missouri and the three years of service in the civil war.
He was married to Lovilla (sic) Dunham Aug 17 1856. To them were born two children, Charles William and Cora Esther. On March 28, 1866 he was married to Charlotte Brown. One child, Nellie M., blessed this marriage. He united with the M.E. church in Feb. 1874 of which church he as an honored and faithful official member when summoned by death to enter the spirit world Sept 10,1898.
Although his health had been poor for many months, yet he has been able to attend to his business. Friday afternoon he went to Kingsbury to bring home his daughter and her husband, who teach school there. When about half way home on the return journey, he was taken violently ill. They hurried as quickly as possible and a doctor was summoned but around midnight his spirit passed to the great beyond.
A service which probably as much as any other has endeared Mr. Titus to the people was the superintendency of the cemetery. When he took charge of the work ten or twelve years ago, it presented the appearance of a jungle. Its present beautiful appearance is a monument to his untiring energies and time freely given for which the public is truly grateful.
The funeral occurred yesterday afternoon at his late residence in Wellsboro. There was an immense attendance the house crowded with many chairs and extemporized seats in the yard filled and many persons standing in the yards, on the walks and even in the streets. The deceased was a member of the Masonic order and of the G.A.R. and each order attened in a body. Rev. Mr. Simmons, late of Union Mills, had been sent for to conduct the services. The choir sang. Rev. S.B. Grimes read the Scriptures, Rev. Mr. Smith offered prayer and Rev. Mr. Simmons delivered a discourse which was very eulogistic of the life of the deceased. The procession, with the G.A.R. and Old Glory heading it, the Masons following and a very long line of carriages coming after was significant of the esteem in which Mr. Titus was held. At the grave the Masons first went through their ritual service and the G.A.R. followed with theirs, George Whorwell acting as commander. The remains were buried with full military honors and the final salute of three volleys was given. Patton Post of this city had charge. Deceased was a member of Co. H., Eighty-seventh Indiana Volunteers.

Towner, Daniel Coit - Unknown Newspaper, 1855
At Michigan City, Indiana on Saturday, August 11th of Consumption, DANIEL COIT TOWNER,
only surviving son of the late Rev. James Towner, formerly of this city, aged 24 years. The
funeral ceremonies took place at Michigan City yesterday afternoon.
In Memoriam – We are pained by the announcement of the recent death of D. C. Towner, which
occurred at Michigan City, the home of his boyhood, last Saturday afternoon. Previous to his
illness he had resided for several years in this city, where his manly qualities, and irreproachable
life, had gained for him a circle of warm friends, who sincerely mourn his early death. The
departed commenced his collegiate studies at the Michigan University, and graduated at
Amhurst, Massachusetts, a few years since, after which he entered upon his legal studies in the
office of Messrs. Scammon & McCagg, in this city, and just at the period when his profession
opened before him and the hopes of his friends seemed about to be realized in the fulfillment of
the promise of his earlier years, a solemn hand beckoned him away to another world, and neither
the prayers nor the efforts of sorrow stricken friends could hold him back from following it
speedily to the portals of the grave. Sincerely as others may deplore the loss of a friend, their
grief bears no comparison to the bitterness of that bereavement and desolation which falls upon
the heart and hopes of a widowed mother and a widowed sister, for whom their warmest
sympathies are now elicited.
