Sacks, Mrs. Edith - 18 April 1930 LaPorte Herald-Argus - - -Mrs Edith Sacks, age 41, of Hanna, died last evening at 5 o'clock at the Fairview hospital after a 3 year's illness of diabetes. Mrs. Sachs was born in Cass Township April 30, 1888, moving to Hanna nine years ago. She was married in Wanatah to Paul R. Sacks, who survives. Mrs. Sacks was a member of the Methodist church. Others surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Edna Ragan of South Bend, and Mrs. Ada Bailey of Hanna; a brother George Gillham of Hanna; two sisters, Mrs. Herman Sachs of Hanna and Mrs. Charles Holtz of La Porte, and her mother, Mrs. Joseph Gillham of Hanna...burial in Union Mills.

"Eldred W. "Bud" Sacks, 84, of Hanna, died on Tuesday, August 21, 2001, at his home. He was born on January 16, 1917 in Hanna township to August and Clara (Smith) Sacks. Mr. Sacks retired from Modine Manufacturing in La Porte after 35 years as a welder. He was a 1936 graduate of Hanna High School, a member of Hanna United Methodist church, Modine 20-year Club, and a charter member of the Hanna V.F.D., serving 54 years. On January 11, 1941, in La Porte, he married Juanita Mills, who survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters; Rita Wallace, and Kathy Mack, both of Hanna; one son, Paul of Hanna; six grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dale. The funeral is Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Hanna United Methodist church, with Rev. Kent Dale officiating. Friends may call at Wanatah Funeral chapel on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m., where the Hanna Fire Department will have a service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Hanna Cemetery. Eugene Alvin Sacks Obituary - 44, of route 1, Hanna, died Monday at 10 p.m. at his home. He was born in Hanna on Feb. 27, 1929 to Herman and Florence (Gillham) Sacks. On October 11, 1961 he married Joanne Makina in LaPorte. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Larry, La Porte, Danny and Byron, both of Hanna; two daughters, Mrs. Cheryl Rutt, Pendleton, Ore., and Miss Deata Kay Sacks, Hanna; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Demo, Hanna, and Mrs. Thelma Morrison, Wanatah; one brother, Harold, Lansing, Ill; five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Kosanke Brothers Funeral home, Union Mills. The Rev. David McDonald will officiate. Burial will be in the Hanna cemetery. LaPorte Herald-Argus 10-4-1973 The death of Eugene Sacks, 44, of route 1, Hanna has been ruled a suicide by La Porte County Deputy Coroner Lewis Juday. Sacks' body was found Tuesday morning with a gunshot wound in his head. Juday fixed the time of death at 10 a.m. on Monday.

Florence B. (Gillham) Sacks - Obituary - LaPorte Herald-Argus 7-12-1961 - "Mrs. Florence B. Sacks, 69, died at 9:30 p.m. yesterday at Porter Memorial hospital, Valparaiso, after a 2-week illness. She was born in Wanatah on April 28, 1892 to Joseph and Sophia (Dankert) Gillham, and had lived in the Hanna area most of her life. She was married on Nov. 15, 1909 in La Porte to Herman G. Sacks who died July 3, 1961. Mrs. Sacks was a member of the Hanna American Legion auxiliary. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Glen White, Hanna; Mrs. Amos Reed, Union Mills; Mrs. Henry Demo, Chehalis, Wash.; and Mrs. Charles Morrison, Wanatah; 3 sons, Eugene, La Porte; Clifford, Hamlet; and Harold, South Bend; one sister, Mrs. Charles Holtz, La Porte; one brother, George Gillham, La Porte; and 14 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kosanke Brothers Funeral home, Union Mills, and the Rev. Nevin Beehler officiating. Burial will be in Hanna cemetery."

Sacks, Gustave F. - LaPorte Newspaper 11 February 1931 - - Gustave Sacks, age 70, died yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock at his home two miles northeast of Hanna. Death followed a short illness of heart trouble. Mr. Sacks was born in Germany, March 23, 1860, moving to near Hanna 34 years ago from Kouts. He was a farmer. Mr. Sacks was married in 1882 in Germany to Amelia E. Jochim, who survives. Others surviving are six sons, Paul, Herman, August, Ludwig, and Harry Sacks of Hanna, and John Sacks of Stillwell, and five daughters, Mrs. Augusta Boniface, Mrs. Emma Gross, Mrs. Bertha Peters, Mrs. Lema Gardner, all of Hanna; and Mrs. Marie Milzarek, Valparaiso. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home and at 1:30 at the Hanna Methodist church; the Rev. John Schaible of Wanatah officiating. Sacks, Harry Clarence - Obituary LaPorte Herald-Argus 28 March 1945 - - Harry Clarence Sacks, 36, of route 2, died at 3:25 o'clock this morning after an illness of four months. The son of Gustave and Amelia Sacks, he was born on December 30, 1908 in Hanna and had lived here nine years, coming from Hanna. On Nov. 10, 1934, in South Bend, he was married to Jeanne Ponkonin who survives. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran church of Westville. Surviving besides his wife are one daughter, Beverly Jean, at home; five sisters, Mrs. Gusta Boniface, Mrs. Emma Goss, Mrs. Bertha Peters, Mrs. Lema Gardner, all of Hanna; Mrs. Marie Milzarek, Valparaiso; three brothers, Herman and Louie, John of South Bend. Three brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 o'clock at the Trinity Lutheran church of Westville, with the Rev. Howard Bhrens officiating. Sacks, Paul Rudolph - Obituary LaPorte Herald-Argus 7 February 1944 - - Paul Rudolph Sacks, 59, of Hanna, died Saturday afternoon at 12:30 at the Holy Family Hospital following an illness of six weeks. Death was due to complications. He was born in Germany on March 3, 1884, and had lived in Hanna for 41 years, coming from Kouts. He was a machinist. On Jan. 2, 1931, in Kokomo, he was married to May McKee. He was a member of the Evangelical church. Surviving are his wife; two sons and two daughters by a previous marriage, Ora of Wanatah; Robert somewhere in the South Pacific; Mrs. Edna Rogan, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Mrs. Ada Bailey, Kouts; Four grandchildren; Four brothers, Herman, John, Louis, and Harry; five sisters, Gusta, Bertha, Emma, Marie, and Lena; two foster daughters, Mrs. Fred Faulkner, Kokomo, and Mrs. Dorothy Sacks, La Porte, and one foster grandchild. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o'clock at the Hanna Methodist church with the Rev. J. A. Gardner of Union Mills and the Rev. George Harts officiating. SALISBURY, BENJAMIN F. - Michigan City News, 26 August 1909 - - Benjamin F. Salisbury, for 40 years a resident of Rolling Prairie died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. L. Armstrong, in Ottumwa, Ia. The deceased was 90 years old and leaves four sons, Theron, Frank, O. L. and Rollin Salisbury, one daughter, Mrs. Armstrong, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Salisbury died four years ago. The remains reached Rolling Prairie today for burial.

Kristan Salzer Kristan M. Salzer, 17, LaPorte, died at 1:35 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 11, 2000) at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, Ill. The funeral is at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, with Pastor Lark Carlson Brown officiating. Burial is in Door Village Cemetery, LaPorte. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Miss Salzer was born Sept. 5, 1983, in LaPorte to Brian and Karen Manus Salzer. Her parents survive in LaPorte. Also surviving are four brothers, Andrew Salzer, Benjamin Miller, Darron Salzer, Nathanel Salzer, all at home; and grandparents, Richard and Bonnie Hagenow, LaPorte. Four grandparents preceded her in death. Miss Salzer was a student and lived all her life in the LaPorte area. She was a member of Door Village United Methodist Church, a junior at LaPorte High School and a member of the school choir.

Schadowsky, Louisa Miller (from Michigan City News, 14 Dec 1910) - Mrs. Wm. Schadowsky Dead Operated on Ten Days Ago for General Peritonitis--Ill Long Time
  Friday, December 9. Mrs. Louise Schadowsky, wife of Patrolman William Schadowsky, died at 7:30 o'clock this morning in St. Anthony's Hospital following an operation ten days ago for general peritonitis. Mrs. Schadowsky was in a badly debilitated state when taken to the hospital owing to long illness, and theoperation was a dangerous one. Yet she seemed to be on the road to recovery until two days ago when a secondary abscess developed in the abdomen and nothing could be done to save her life.
  Louise Miller was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles A Miller of Laporte and was born in Lincoln Township, Sept 17, 1874. She was married in Laporte March 25, 1897 to William Schadowsky. He with one daughter, Helen, aged 10 years, survives. The family came to Michigan City in 1906.
  The parents of Mrs. Schadowsky reside in Laporte and she is survived by four sisters and one brother, as follows: Mr.s Charles Stoffer of Pleasant township, Mrs. William Gau of South Bend, Mrs. Fred Blankschein of this city and Mrs. Matilda Meyer of LaPorte and Herman Miller of Stillwell. Her husband and daughter and sisters, Mrs. Blankschien and Mrs. Gau were with Mrs. Schadowsky as the end came.
  Mrs. Schadowsky was beloved by a large circle of friends and the bereaved husband and daughter have the sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow.

Schaffer - Karen Schaffer - News Dispatch 7-14-1999 - THE PINES — Karen P. Schaffer, 62, The Pines, died unexpectedly at 5:58 a.m. Tuesday (July 13, 1999) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Carlisle Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Benevides officiating. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Schaffer was born March 8, 1937, in Michigan City to Stanley and Viola Urban Nespo. On Feb. 19, 1955, in Quartzsite, Ariz., she married Charles Schaffer. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, Michael (Laura) Schaffer, Hanna, Ind., and Rob (Marianne) Schaffer, Michigan City; two daughters, Jill (Rob) Saylor, LaPorte, and Abby (Paul) Benevides, Callo, Va.; and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Schaffer was a homemaker. She enjoyed bowling and golf and was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

Scharf - Albert Scharf, LaPorte Daily Herald - Mon, 19 Apr 1915 - P 1 Col 15 - - 37 years of age, for the past seven years an employ at the plant of the Great Western Manufacturing Co., died at 12:30 yesterday afternoon at his home, 209 Norton street, after an illness of only six days. Death was due to pneumonia. He was the support of his aged mother, Mrs. Henry Scharf, and his loss is deeply mourned, not only by members of his family, but by a host of friends and the employes of the manufacturing establishment where he was highly respected and a valuable employe. Albert Scharf was born in LaPorte, February 25, 1878. He was a member of the German Lutheran church and received his education in the German Lutheran school. He leaves besides his mother, three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Piper of LaPorte, Mrs. Tillie Benford of Michigan City and Mrs. Ella Miller of LaPorte, and two brothers Frank and George Scharf both of LaPorte. His father, Henry Scharf, died five years ago last August. The funeral will be held Wednesday at two o'clock from the residence and at 2:30 from the German Lutheran church, Rev. Man dies from perforation of stomach. Frank Scharf, Suffering With Ulcer of Stomach and Appendicitis, Succumbs.
  In a terrible condition from a perforated ulcer of the stomach and a gangrenous appendix, Frank F. Scharf, 34 of 209 Norton street, was taken to the Holy Family hospital this morning and died at 2 o'clock this afternoon, after an operation. His condition was such that surgeons were unable to do anything for him. The perforated ulcer and condition of the appendix had caused peritonitis to set in and he was past help. He recovered consciousness after the operation and knew that death was near.
  Scharf was located in a barn yesterday afternoon in the rear of George Wright's saloon on East Lincolnway and a physician was called, but Scharf refused to go to the hospital. He was taken to Wright's home and Mr. and Mrs. Wright attended him through the night. At 7:30 this morning the physician was again called and he was taken to the hospital.
  Frank Scharf worked for a number of years for Sam Fosdick, gardener and lived with his mother, Mrs. Minnis Scharf. He leaves a brother George Scharf and of Allen street, this city and a sister in Michigan City.

Scharf - Henry Scharf - La Porte Daily Herald - Saturday. Aug 14, 1909 - p 8 col 4 - Henry Scharf, a well known resident of LaPorte died at 4 o'clock this morning of heart disease and dropsy, after an illness of nine months. The deceased was born in Mecklenbrug Germany, April 4, 1835. He came to this country in 1863 and settled in LaPorte. He was married the first time in Germany to Louise Unruhof and she died in this country in 1874. Two years later Mr. Scharf married Miss Minnie Sherman, who survives. The deceased is also mourned by six children: Louise and William of Pilot Grove, Wis., Mrs. C. K. Piper of Michigan City and Albert and Frank Scharf of LaPorte. He also leaves one brother John Scharf of this city. Surviving him also are nine grandchildren and two great grand children. Deceased was a veteran soldier. The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at St. John's Lutheran church. Rev. Paul Eickstaedt officiating. The burial be take place at the Lutheran cemetery with Weir and Sievert in charge.

Scharf - Mrs. Myrtle L. Scharf - Obituaries Oct 3, 1948 - Mrs. Myrtle L. Scharf, 61, of 406 Warwick street, died at 11:10 last night at the residence after an illness of about 5 months.
  The daughter of William and Elizabeth 'Underwood' Bell, she was born in LaPorte on June 14, 1886, and had lived here her entire life.
  On January 26, 1905, in LaPorte, she was married to Frank J. Scharf, who survives. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran church and a Circle Eight of her church.
  Also surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Fred Steigely, Mrs. Henry Parsell, Mrs. Robert Hewitt, all of LaPorte, Mrs. Harold Hicks, Hudson Lake, Mrs. Kenneth Fifer, South Bend and Miss Elizabeth Scharf, at home; two sons, Norman Scharf and Franklin Scharf, of LaPorte; 10 grandchildren, and one great grand-daughter. One brother William Bell, Chicago; one sister, Mrs. Joseph Stepanke, LaPorte; one sone, Robert, preceded her in death.
  Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Giese and Kimball funeral home with the Rev. Manfred E. Reinke officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran cemetery. Scharf - Mrs. Wilhelmina Scharf - - Age 79 11-26-1920 - The funeral of Mrs. Wilhelmina Scharf, 79, of 106 Planett Street, the widow of the late Henry Scharf, who died at her home on Thursday night at 9 o'clock, will take place on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Decker's chapel, with special services at 2:30 at the Lutheran Church, with Rev. Paul Eickstaedt officiating. The remains may be viewed Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday morning at the Chapel. Interment will be in Patton Cemetery.
  The decedent, whose maiden name was Wilhelmina Schernow, came from Germany at a very early age, and married Henry Scharf forty-five years ago, in this city. Two sons, Frank and Albert, died a number of years ago, and one daughter died in infancy. The decedent leaves besides two daughters, Mrs. C. K. Peiper of this city, and Mrs. H. L. Schaub, Mrs. Annaobit Oct 29, 1929 - Mrs. Anna Schaub, age 77, passed away this morning at 3:35 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Leslie Bolster, 1008 Lake Street.
  The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Himmel, Mrs. Schaub was born in Germany, May 16, 1852, coming to this country 48 years ago. She lived in Chicago for two years before moving to LaPorte. Mrs. Schaub was a member of the Christian church.
  Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Leslie Bolster, Mrs. George Wilcox and Mrs. Anna Beam of LaPorte, 11 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, and a sister Mrs. Elizabeth Moeschel.
  Funeral services will be held a E. E. Ebbert chapel Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The body may be viewed at the funeral parlor Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday until the time of the funeral. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. contributed by: Alan Zeller

Schaub, John G. - LaPorte Argus May 31, 1922 - Word was received here of the death of John G. Schaub of Whiting, Indiana, by Gallus Bader, his brother-in-law and Mrs. Frank Zimerman, his sister
Mrs. Schaub died Monday. The funeral services will be held in Whiting Thursday morning and the body brought here for burial. (Freeland) Schlicht, 83, LaPorte, died at 3 p.m. Saturday (April 21, 2001) at Fountainview Terrace, LaPorte. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, with Pastor Jack Cox officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Visitation is from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Schlicht was born Oct. 12, 1917, in La Porte, to William Henry and Lenora (Grice) Freeland. On Jan. 26, 1963, in La Porte, she married Vern Schlicht, who died in 1971. Survivors include a brother, William Freeland, South Bend; and several nieces and nephews. Also preceding her in death were one brother and one sister. Mrs. Schlicht worked in the factory at Indiana Molding and Frame for 15 years." Jeanette first married to a Lester Sipole, an immigrant from Poland. Their daughter died at age 4 on 12/18/1945. Her husband, age 38, committed suicide on 4/8/1946. She apparently remarried. In 1947, I found Jeanette I. Freeland living at 112 Fox Street with her grandparents, Charles B. and Mary Freeland. Charles is listed as a farmer. At the time, Jeanette was working as a plant dipper at "Universal Toy" company. Apparently she reverted to her maiden name.

Schlundt, Harvey E. - Mich. City News Dispatch, Aug. 12, 1946 - - Harvey E. Schlundt, 52, 124 Claire, lifelong Michigan City resident, died suddenly at 8:10 am. Sunday of a heart attack while taking his car from the garage. Born Sep. 30, 1893, the son of Lewis and Gustie Rappel *(should read Raffel*) Schlundt, he was married Nov. 16, 1937 to Hattie Harbert Westphall, who survives. Also surviving are his parents, a step-son, Harold Westphall, a sister, Mrs. E.H. Paschack, and a brother, William Schlundt, all of this city. He was employed as a car man by the South Shore railroad and was a veteran of World War I. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church, John Franklin Miller Post No. 37, American Legion and the South Shore Carmen's Union. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Marvin Haas funeral home with Rev. A. P. Hardt officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday until the funeral hour.

Aug. 26, 1945 Funeral Services for Mrs. Anita Augusta Gruenke Schmidt, 85, Michigan City, R.R. 2 who died at home early Saturday morning after an illness of one week will be held Tuesday at 2 at the late home and at 2:30 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Otis with Rev. Howard Behrens officiating. Burial will be in Beatty's Corners cemetery. Mrs. Schmidt was born May 28, 1860 in Posen, Germany and came here when she was 19 years of age (1879). She was married April 14, 1887 to Julius Schmidt who preceded her in death. Surviving is are two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Olga) Miller, LaPorte, R.R. 2 and Mrs. Frank Keller, Highland Park, ILL., and four sons, Herman at home, Louis and Adelbert, Michigan City, R.R. 2 and Henry, LaPorte, R.R. 2, 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A son and daughter also preceded her in death. She was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran church at Otis. Friends may call at at the late home until the hour of the funeral.

Schmidt, Edward - Nov 25, 1913 - Mich City Evening News Edward Schmidt died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. August (Clara) Glassman, 712 East Tenth St., at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon. His death was attributed to cancer of stomach. Mr. Schmidt was born May 27, 1857 in Germany. He was married in Wanatah in 1879 (Dec 25, 1979 to Albertine Schmidt) and his wife died 3 years ago. The deceased resided on a farm at Beatty's Corners for 22 years, but came to this city two years ago and has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. August Glassman ever since. He is survived by five children, William and Leo Schmidt, residing in Wisconsin and Emil Schmidt, Mrs. August (Clara) Glassman and Miss Clara (Laura) Schmidt, of this city; four brothers, Gottlieb Schmidt, Joliet (IL); Julius Schmidt, Otis (LaPorte, IN); Beaty's Corners and August Schmidt of (Charlestown town, Calumet,) Wisconsin; two sisters, Mrs. (Amelia Charles) Leverenz of Beatty's Corners and Mrs. John (Amelia) Hecht of Michigan City, and three grandchildren. She and Ed Schmidt were married Dec 25, 1879 in Wanatah. Besides the husband she is survived by the following children: William, Menasha, Wis., Emil, Michigan City; Leo, Collins, Wis., and Mrs. August (Clara) Glassman and Miss Laura Schmidt, living at home. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the house, Rev. H.C. Wickemeyer (St. Paul church, Otis) of this city officiating.

Julius Wilhelm Schmidt, Apr 5, 1926, Mich City Evening Disp The death of Julius Wilhelm Schmidt, 65, who died at his home tow miles southeast of Beatty's Corners, at 12:35 o'clock Easter Sunday, following an illness of about six years, was attributed to heart disease. Mr. Schmidt was born in West Prussia, Germany, March 10, 1860, and has been residing in this country for the past 51 years (1875). He has always been occupied with farming. In the year 1887 he was married to Augusta Gruenke in Michigan City, and four sons and two daughter, with the widow, survive. They are Adelbert Schmidt, Lafayette; Henry, Durham Station; Louis and Herman at home; Mrs. Olg Miller, Durham Station and Miss Harthia, who is at home. One daughter, Lenora and one son, Wilhelm are dead. Two sisters and two brothers also survive. They are: Mrs. John (Matilda) Hecht of Michigan City; Mrs. Amelia Lawrenz; Martin Schmidt, residing near Otis and Gottlieb Schmidt, Chilton, Wis. The deceased was a member of the Lutheran church at Otis. The funeral will be held at the church there at 2 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, April 7, A brief prayer service will be held at the family home at 1 o'clock. Rev. Medler of Westville, will officiate. Burial will be in the Beatty's Corners cemetery. Friends may view the remains from Tuesday afternoon until the hour of the funeral on Wednesday.

Louis R. Schmidt, Mar 23, 1963 - Mich City News Disp Westville, Ind. - Louis Rudolph Schmidt, 69, R.R. 2, Box 256, Michigan City, was pronounced dead on arrival at Doctors Hospital, Michigan City, last night after suffering an apparent heart attack. Mr. Schmidt had been ill for five months. He was born in LaPorte County June 8, 1893 to Julius W. and Augusta Grunke Schmidt. He was married to Anges H. Kolasinski June 4, 1932 in St. Paul's Luthuran Church at Otis. She survives. Other survivors include three brothers: Henry, R.R. 1, LaPorte; Herman, R.R. 2, Michigan City and Adelbert, R.R. 2, Michigan City, and one sister, Mrs. Frank Keller, Highland Park, IL. Rev. Lanny Zup will officiate at the funeral at St. Paul's Church at Otis at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Beatty's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Weaver Funeral Home after 7 p.m. tomorrow. The body will lie in state at the church from Tuesday noon until the hour of the funeral. A farmer, Mr. Schmidt was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Otis.

Mrs. Martin Schmidt - Obit. Feb 27, 1942, Mich City News Disp. - 2nd wife of Martin, Julia Schmidt Relatives received word today that Mrs. Martin Schmidt, 84, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. John (Elsie) Deutscher, St. Joesph. She was born in Germany April 29, 1857, and came to this country 49 years ago. She was married in Germany to George Schlack who died 49 years ago at Westville. They were the parents of five children, George Schlack, Mrs Helena Morman, Mrs. Henry Schmidt, all of LaPorte, and Mrs. Clarence Brown, Mrs. Herman Diedrich, both of Michigan City. On Feb 6 1900 she was married Martin Schmidt, who died in 1932. They had one daughter Mrs. John (Elsie) Deutscher. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mrs. Schmidt was a member of St. Paul's church where funeral service will be held at 1:30 Sunday afternoon. Burial will be in Westville Cemetery.

Schmidt, Martin Mrs. Jan 18, 1899, Mich City News - 1st wife of Martin, Henrietta Schmidt Death at Beatty's Corners Mrs. Martin (Henrietta) Schmidt died Sunday evening at 10 o'clock, at the family home, near Beatty's Corners. Death was caused by blood poisoning, resulting from a nursing breast. Deceased was a native of Germany, but had lived in this country many years. She would have been 43 years of age March 30th, next. She leaves a husband and eight children to mourn her sad death, the youngest child being 9 months old. Funeral Tuesday afternoon.

He was about 30 years of age and had been suffering from consumption for some time. He was in destitute circumstances, and the township trustee had been preparing to remove him to the county house. Schnick, Frank W. – Michigan City Dispatch, Michigan city, IN, Thurs. 10 Jan. 1907, p. 6, c. 4 - - - Frank Schnick, whose death occurred at 5:30 o'clock Thursday morning at his home in New Durham township, was a victim of pneumonia, having been ill since Christmas. He was a native of Germany and was fifty-four years of age. He leaves a widow and nine children, Albert, John, Henry, and Emil of this city, and Frank, Herman, Paul Arnold and Anna, residing at home. Schnick, Mrs. Matilda Marie – News-Dispatch, Michigan City, IN, Wed. 31 July 1940, p. 10, c. 1 - Mrs Matilda Schnick, 86, 620 Willard Ave., died on Sunday morning, July 28, 1940, at her home. She is survived by eight sons, Albert, John Frank, Henry, Herman, Emil and Paul, all of this city, and Arnold of Hanna, and 43 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren: also one brother, Albert Kopichka, this city. Services were held this afternoon at 2 p.m. from the late home and at 2:30 from the Immanuel Lutheran church. Burial was at Beatty's Corners. Grandsons were pallbearers. Funeral was in charge of Wilber-Haas funeral home.

  Mr. Schulke was born in Germany on May 9, 1857. He had lived here for the past seven years, moving from Decatur, IL. He came to America in 1880 from Germany. On Jan. 14, 1880, he married Marie Prall. His wife survives. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Haverstock chapel here. The Rev. Victor P. Schultz, Charles John - LaPorte Herald-Argus 9-25-1929 - - "Charles John Schultz, age 74, passed away at his home on Weller Avenue this morning at 7:40 after several years of poor health. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Schultz, Mr. Schultz was born in Germany, but had lived here since 1906. He was an employee of the Rustic Hickory Furniture Company. Mr. Schultz was a member of the Methodist church and the Modern Woodmen of America. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Minnie Schultz; four sons, William, Edwin, and Arthur Schultz, all of Portland, Ore, and Richard Schultz of LaPorte; a stepson, Clarence E. Raymond; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Elmer A. Miller, Mrs. Ray Gangwer, and Mrs. Walter Deako, three sisters and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Cutler Brothers chapel, the Rev. A. H. Kenna officiating. The body may be viewed at the chapel on Thursday and Friday. Cora Schultz   -  Funeral services for Mrs. Cora A. Schultz, 93, who died unexpectedly Thursday, March 19, at 5:20 am at her home, will be Monday at 1 pm at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Dr. W. William Wimberly II officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 pm Saturday until the time of services Monday. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. She was born Dec. 18, 1887, in Wills Twp., LaPorte County, to Simeon and Carrie (Wiltfong) Harness and had lived in the county all her life. She was a member of LaPorte Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women's Organization since 1945; a charter member of the Springfield Twp., LaPorte County Farm Bureau for more than 50 years; charter member of Springfield Twp., Extension Homemakers Club organization in 1924; past president of Springfield Twp., PTA; member of the American Red Cross board of directors; then and honorary board member and had received her 45-year Red Cross pin 1978. She was a member of the Mill Creek Alumni Association since 1906; attended Valparaiso University and taught in the county public school for eight years. On Feb. 22, 1913, in Michigan City, she married Walter Schultz who died Jan. 8, 1956. Surviving are one son, Victor W., with whom she made her home; one daughter, Mrs. Armin (Betty) Trujillo of Willow Springs, LaPorte; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was the son of Henry C. and Mary Siebert Schultz. On July 1, 1908, in this city, he was married to Bertha Raffel, who preceded him in death. Her death was due to malnutrition. She had been ailing for nine months. Miss Bertha Raffel was born in Germany 25 years ago. She came to Michigan City fro her native country about 15 years ago. Miss Raffel and George Schultz were united in marriage July 1, 1908 in this city. Besides the husband, she is survived by one daughter, Henrietta, nine months of age; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Raffel, two brothers, Carl and Rudolph Raffel, and four sisters, Mrs. Walter Harding, and the Misses Ida, Emma, and Martha Raffel, all of this city. Surviving are on sister, Mrs. Betty Trujillo of LaPorte; two nieces, one nephew; three great-nieces and one great-nephew. Schumaker - Evelyn Schumaker - 11/21/2000 News Dispatch, Michigan City, INLaPORTE — Evelyn H. Schumaker, 96, LaPorte, died at 7:15 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 19, 2000) at Fountainview Terrace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. The funeral is at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. David Schoop officiating. Burial is in Springville Cemetery. There is no visitation. Mrs. Schumaker was born Jan. 24, 1904, in Michigan City to Otto and Henrietta Wendt Voss. In 1923, she married Harold L. Schumaker. He died April 28, 1981. Survivors include one daughter, Frances (Irwin) Mellenthin, LaPorte; one son, Eugene (Kathryn) Schumaker, Seffner, Fla.; one brother, Otto (Mary) Voss, LaPorte; two sisters, Dorothy Gropp and Harriet Lobsiger, both of LaPorte; eight grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Robert Voss; one sister, Madeline Brickley; and two infant sons. Mrs. Schumaker was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, LaPorte. Schwank, Fred - La Porte Daily Herald - Tuesday, 5 January 1892 - - Fred Schwank, an inmate of the county house, died yesterday morning and was buried today at Pine lake Cemetery.

Schwiem, Elnora Weston - Elnora Weston Schwiem was born Jan. 22, 1861, in La Porte Co., staying at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pleasant Weston until she was married. She worked and assisted in the household duties of her parents, being a general favorite in the family. Deceased was of a kind and amiable disposition. She joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Bald Hill under the pastorate of the Rev. Bruner and ever remained a faithful and conscientious member of that church. She married the now sorrow-stricken husband, Wm. Schwiem, in New Buffalo, Mich., Aug. 30, 1881. Six children were born to them, of whom five survive her. Mrs. Schwiem was a true and faithful helpmate to her husband, a kind and loving mother to her children and was loved by her friends for her sweet and gentle disposition. She died peacefully in the faith of her religion, and will be laid at rest in Griffin's cemetery. Schwenk, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Heckman – Michigan City News, October 11, 1906 Mrs. Charles Schwenk, aged 37, died last week of consumption at her home near Hesston. She was a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. David Hickman (sp. s/b Heckman). Burial in Heckman Cemetery.

Mrs. Christina Schweitzer, for more than 40 years a resident of La Porte, who died Sunday night at her home, 208 Division street, after an illness of two weeks of peritonitis, as noted in yesterday's Herald, was before her marriage, Christina Hoch. She was born 74 years ago in Goenningen, Wuertemberg, Germany, where she married Conrad Frederick Schweitzer in 1861. The couple came to La Porte in 1866 and had since resided here, Mr. Schweitzer being a wellknown gardner. He survives, as do two sons, John Schweitzer, postmaster at Union Mills, and Gust Schweitzer, traveling salesman for a Chicago wholesale grocery. Two children died in Germany, another died on the Atlantic ocean and two had died since the family came to this country. The deceased was a woman who had suffered the pangs of much trouble during her life, but through it her faith in the supreme guidance never waivered and belief that in the end all would be right was at all times strong. She raised three families, two besides her own. In 1893 she took the 9-day-old child or Mrs. Henry Brenn and brought him up. A few years ago he was accidentally drowned in Stone lake. She also took care of the children of August Rosencranz. She was a devout member of the German Methodist Episcopal church and belonged to the Ladies' society. Lewis Orlin and Emily (Warner) Weed had several children, including a daughter Harriet Ellen (or "Ella"). Based on census records and information from Bill Collins, she was born about 1845. The Dibean Michigan Marriage Index has the following entry: SEARING, DAVID SANFORD SEARING, WEED, HARRIET ELLEN WEED, BERRIEN,--,,01 JAN 1867,--,CTY REC# 0003,-- David and Ella Searing appear on the 1870 census in Three Oaks, Michigan. He was a grocer. They had no children. He was age 28 (born abt 1842, NJ) and she age 25 (born abt. 1845 IN). His 1871 death is listed on the Michigan Genealogical Death Indexing System. She apparently remarried. The Dibean Michigan Marriage Index has the following entry: SEARING, ELLA - SEARING, MARTIN, ABRAHAM F MARTIN, BERRIEN,--,,25 DEC 1878,--,CTY REC# 0888,-- Abram and Ella Martin appear on the 1880 census in Three Oaks, Michigan. He was a grocer (too!). They had no children. He was age 30 (born abt. 1850 MI) and she age 35 (born abt. 1845 IN). The genealogical questionnaire completed by Chas. H. Weed about 1899 for Edward F. Weed, Rowayton, Connecticut, identifies that he had one living sister, Emily Reed, and "four dead" sisters. (The Reed family lived in Iowa.)

Bernice Sempsrott LaPORTE - Bernice Marie Sempsrott, 85, LaPorte, died at 2 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 1, 1997) at her home after a lengthy illness. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cutler Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Storey officiating. Interment will be at the Door Village Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday until services at Cutler Funeral Home. An Eastern Star memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Cutler Funeral Home. Mrs. Sempsrott was born Feb. 19, 1912 in Robinson, Ill., the daughter of Robert H. Crail and Minnie Mize. Both preceded her in death. On March 20, 1932, in Robinson, she married Cloyce Lyman Sempsrott of Willow Hill, Ill., who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Judith (Bart) Ridley-Crediton, Ontario, Canada; a son, David (Gloria) Sempsrott, Three Oaks, Mich.; a granddaughter, Sarah Marie Ridley; three step grandsons; and a brother, Donald Crail, Kingsford Heights. She was preceded in death by two sisters. After graduating with honors from nurses' training in Effingham, Ill., Mrs. Sempsrott worked as a nurse for Allen's Sanatorium in Robinson, and moved to LaPorte in 1942 and was a nurse for the LaPorte Corporation. She was a member of First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 20 years, LaPorte Chapter #280 of the Eastern Star. After starting a family she continued in a variety of community organizations and was a care giver to many people.

Seward, Mary (Hess) - Michigan City News, March 15, 1899, Page 1, Col. 4 - - Mrs. Mary Seward, wife of L.T. Seward, of Hatch's Mills and mother of Norman E. Seward, of this city, died about 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the family home in Galena township after a brief illness from typhoid pneumonia. Mrs. Seward had been bedfast only since Saturday and her death came as a sudden shock to her many friends. Mary Hess, which was the maiden name of the deceased, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter M. Hess, deceased, and was born in Delaware county, New York, fifty-five years ago. With her parents she moved when a child to Galena township and with the exception of the few years residence in Dowagiac and Cassopolis, Mich., and Laporte had been a continual resident of Galena. She leaves one sister, Mrs. H.E. Smith, of Galena township, and a husband and six adult children. The children are: Mrs. Amos Wasson, Hesston; Mrs. Schuyler Hunt, Rolling Prairie; Norman E., Michigan City; Charles, New Buffalo and Miss Myrtle and Geo. A. Seward residing at home. Mrs. Seward was a woman of exceeding high character and she will be greatly missed. Burial in Hesston Cemetery.

Seward, Theron A. – Michigan City News, January 11, 1927 - - -Theron A. Seward, 87, father of Norman A. Seward, manager of the Merchants Mutual Telephone company, died at 8:30 o'clock last night in the Holy Family hospital, in Laporte. Mr. Seward was well known in this city. In addition to his son in this city, he leaves one other son, George Seward, in Harvey, Ill., and three daughters, Mrs. Harry Turner, Union Mills; Mrs. Nellie Hunt, Laporte, and Mrs. Myrtle Heckman, South Bend. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock, with services in the Cutler Brothers chapel, in Laporte. Burial will be in Hesston, Ind.

SHAFFER, FRANK – The Daily Argus, Aug 3, 1944 - - Frank Shaffer, 72, of Mill Creek, died at the Fairview Hospital at 5:15 yesterday afternoon after an illness of a few weeks. He was born in Michigan April 14, 1873 and came to Mill Creek 50 years ago from Marcilius, Mich. His parents were John and Elizabeth Shaffer. He was married April 9, 1896 to Josephine Reed, who survives. Other survivors include; Three daughters, Mrs. Warren Houser, North Liberty; Mrs. Dale Born and Miss Elizabeth Shaffer, both of Mill Creek; two sons, Henry and Frank, Jr., both of Mill Creek; three brothers, five sisters and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 at the home and 2:30 at the Mill Creek Baptist church, the Rev. William Bauerlein officiating. Burial will be in the Sauktown cemetery with O.M. Haverstock in charge. The body may be viewed at the home until time for the funeral.

Shaffer - HENRY SHAFFER - Henry Shaffer, 69, of Mill Creek, died at 9 pm Sunday in North Liberty. He was born Jan. 19, 1906 in Mill Creek to Frank and Josephine (Reed) Shaffer and had lived there his entire life. Mr. Shaffer was a retired carpenter. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Dale E. Born of South Bend and Mrs. Warren Houser of North Liberty. Also surviving are one brother, Frank Shaffer, Jr. of Mill Creek and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister. Funeral services are at 10:30 am Wednesday at the Haverstock Chapel with burial in Sauktown Cemetery. Shaulkey, Mrs. John   -  Westville Indicator, June 15, 1905   Thursday morning of last week Mrs. John Shaulkey, of Pleasant township went into the yard of her home to build a fire under a kettle which was to be used in heating water. In some manner her clothing was ignited and the woman was overcome and burned to a crisp. Mrs. Shaulkey was a widow, 60 years of age, and with two sons and a daughter occupied the homestead near Stillwell. The daughter, not more than twenty feet away, heard no outcry and the awful fate of the mother was not learned until a son coming in from his work saw the charred and blackened mass, all that was left of his mother. Funeral rites were said by Rev. Meinstein of the Lutheran church at Tracy, Sunday afternoon, where the burial also took place. Weir & Seivert were the undertakers in charge.

Shead, Asa A. - Michigan City Dispatch, Sep. 30, 1909 P. 8 col 7 - A.A. Shead, a native of Galena township and always a resident of the same township, excepting four years spent in Minnesota, died Sunday at his home three miles north of Rolling Prairie after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Shead was born in Galena township, Feb. 12, 1844. He is survived by the widow, who previous to her marriage was Miss Cora Cadwallader. He also leaves one daughter, Miss Addie Shead. Burial in Foster Cemetery.

Shead, Francis G. - The Acorn, Three Oaks, Michigan, March 27, 1903 - -Frances G. Shead, an old resident of this township died on his farm southwest of town on March 17, 1903, the cause of his death being a tumor on the brain. He was born on July 29, 1847, in Galena township, LaPorte county, Ind. On April 2, 1865, he married Miss Mary Hatfield, who died on January 12, seven years later. Miss Emily G. Shead was the only child born to this union. Miss Ada Vosburg became his second wife and six children were born to them, four of whom preceded their father in death. The funeral services were held in the Christian church in Galena on Thursday, the nineteenth, conducted by Rev. Black, of Rolling Prairie. Mr. Shead was a member of the local lodge of The Modern Woodmen of America, of whom he spoke with the highest esteem and gratitude for their brotherly services rendered to him during the period of his sickness.

Shedd, Frances Teeter - The LaPorte Daily Argus; Wed., Jan 12, 1916; p. 8, col. 1 & 2 - - Mrs. Gilbert Shedd, who has been ill for the past 3 months, died at the home of her son, Milo Shedd, Saturday evening. Death was due to stomach trouble. Those who survive her are five sons: LaMoyne, Milo, Eaton and Earl Shedd, and one son by a former marriage, Walter Warner, of Michigan; also one daughter, Mrs. Charles Worden , and the husband G.A. Shedd.

Shedd, whose death at 11 o’clock Thursday morning in Rolling Prairie was noted in the Herald, was born in LaPorte county, May 13, 1843, and was 75 years, 5 months and 18 days old. He was a veteran of the Civil War and an ardent member of the G. A. R. and attended practically all the state encampments and usually was placed on some committee or given important work to do. Mr. Shedd was a member of the 6th Michigan Heavy Artillery. His death leaves but four members of Hathaway Post, Rolling Prairie. Mr. Shedd was a farmer up to the time that his age made it necessary for him to retire from active life. He lived at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Worden. He was twice married, his second wife being Miss Francis Teeter who died in January 1916. He leaves five children, Lemon, Milo, Earl and Paul Shedd, and the daughter, mentioned above, Mrs. Worden. The funeral will be held at his daughter’s home at one o’clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. Clark officiating, and the interment will be in Foster cemetery. Weir & Ebbert are in charge. Shedd, Hannah (Greene)   - LaPorte Daily Herald Aug 21 1906 - - Hannah M. Greene was born Oct 17, 1831, in Baltimore, Md., and was married Nov. 21, 1861, to Milo D. Shedd. Early in life she became a resident of LaPorte county and in 1878 she joined the Christian church at Rolling Prairie. The last months of her life on earth were mingled with pain and sickness, the end of her waiting coming Aug 17. She was 74 years and 10 months old. She leaves a husband, one son and one daughter and four grandchildren. The funeral services were held at the family home Sunday afternoon, Rev. W.H. Parsons of the Methodist church at New Buffalo officiating. The burial took place at the Foster cemetery.

SHELLENBERGER, JOHN – Unknown La Porte newspaper, 17 December 1927 - - Funeral services for John Shellenberger, 26, of Rolling Prairie who died yesterday at the Mercy hospital, Englewood, from injuries received in a railroad accident Wednesday, will be held from the home at Rolling Prairie, the time to be announced later. The inquest is to be held at Chicago today. The deceased man was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Shellenberger. He was born in Rolling Prairie, Dec. 30, 1900, and had resided there all his life. He was employed by the New York Central and was working in the Englewood yards when the accident occurred. He is survived by his father; one sister, Mrs. Frank P. Miller and one nephew, Howard Miller. Cutler Brothers have charge of funeral arrangements. Burial in Rolling Prairie Cemetery.

SHELLENBERGER, SOPHIE D. – unknown La Porte newspaper, 15 October 1926 - - - Funeral services for Mrs. Sophie D. Shellenberger, age 55, of Rolling Prairie who died yesterday morning at her home after an illness of a year with paralysis, will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday from the home with Cutler Bros. of this city in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Shellenberger was born in Rolling Prairie on June 28, 1871 the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Detlef Shultz. She was united in marriage to James D. Shellenberger on Dec. 6, 1897. Mrs. Shellenberger was a member of the Christian church and the Rebekah lodge. She is survived by her husband, a son, John, and a daughter, Mrs. Frank Miller of Rolling Prairie, a brother, John Shultz, of Atlanta, Ga., and a sister, Mrs. Harry Brewer, of Salem, O. Shippee, Paul Rolland – Michigan City News, April 9, 1919 - - Paul Rolland Shippee, four-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Shippee, residing ten miles east of the city, died on Wednesday, March 26, of spinal meningitis. The little son had been sick for about three weeks. He was three years, eleven months and twenty days of age. Paul was the third son of Mr. and Mrs. Shippee and he is survived by two elder brothers and a baby sister. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o’clock. Burial will be in the Hesston cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Shippee have the sincere sympathy of their neighbors and many friends in their deep sorrow.

Shippee, Mrs. Alfretta - Oct 19, 1928 - - Mrs. Alfretta Shippee, age 70, wife of Adam Shippee, 204 Ohio Street, died this morning. She was born March 8, 1858, in LaPorte county, living here all her life. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen. She was married March 16, 1873, to Mr. Shippee in Three Oaks, Mich. Surviving are Mr. Shippee; two daughters, Mrs. Fred Pagels of La Porte county and Mrs. Adam Siegmund of New Buffalo, Mich.; a son, Oscar Shippee of La Porte county; seven grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Emma Huntley of Logan, Ia., and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at the Springville church at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Thomas Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Shippeeburg cemetery with E.E. Ebbert in charge.

Shippee, Adam - September 28, 1933 - - Funeral services for Adam Shippee, age 79, of 204 Ohio street, who passed away at his home yesterday after an illness of four days with a complication of diseases, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Haverstock chapel. The Rev. Edgar I. Mitschelen will officiate and burial will be in the Shippeeburg cemetery with O.M. Haverstock in charge. The body may be viewed after 4 p.m. today and until the time of the funeral tomorrow at the Haverstock chapel. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Nehemiah Shippee, the deceased man was born in Springfield township, this county, on May 13, 1854. He had lived in this county all his life, moving into La Porte six years ago. Surviving him are one son, Austin Shippee of rural route 3; two daughters, Mrs. Fred Pagels, route 3, and Mrs. Adam Siegmund of LaPorte; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His wife, Mrs. Alfretta Shippee, preceded him in death five y ears ago.

Shippee, Amanda - May 14, 1923 - - Amanda Shippee, age 56, wife of Hiram Shippee, Springfield township, passed away at St. Anthony's Hospital in Michigan City at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. She had been ill about 18 months. Mrs. Shippee was born at Newark, O., Jan. 6, 1867. She came to La Porte county when 16 years old and had lived here until the day of her death. In 1865 (note: this date does not make sense, based on her birth date) she was married to Hiram Shippee at New Buffalo. Besides her husband, Mrs. Shippee is survived by eight children. They are Otis Shippee at home, Carl Shippee of La Porte, Hattie Wiltfong of La Porte, Lula Sargent of Elkhart, Clifford Shippee of Michigan City, Osborn Shippee at home, Beulah (?)dedrich of La Porte and Hosea Shippee at home. Two brothers and two sisters also survive. They are Samuel Agnew of Shaler, Ia., Abe Agnew of La Porte, Callie Taylor of Shaler, (?) and Kate King of Neward, O. The funeral services will be held at the Springville church at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Mr. Wilkin of Springville will be in charge. Burial will be in the Shippeeburg cemetery. The remains may be viewed at the Ebbert undertaking parlors in this city.

JULIUS SIEGERT PASSES TO HIS REWARD - - Prominent Educator Dies At His Home At The Age Of 77 Years - - - A long, busy and eventful life came to a close Saturday afternoon when Professor Julius G. Siegert, widely known and much-beloved educator, passed from life to death. Mr. Siegert fell asleep at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Zimmerman. Death followed an illness of but a few days, though the period of failing health had its inception at the beginning of the year. His condition became serious last Thursday night when it was apparent that the sands of life were ebbing and that the inevitable end was near at hand. No death in the large membership of St. John's parish has brought more universal expressions of sorrow than the passing of this truly good man. He filled a very large place in the educational activities of LaPorte for more than a half century and today he is mourned in no unusual degree by the Alma Mater of St. John's school. No task was too difficult for him to undertake, no duty which went undischarged, no responsibility in which he did not bear his part cheerfully and with ability which made his life work conspicuous for genuine services to his fellows.
  Mr. Siegert is survived by six children, five daughters, Mrs. George Ulrich, Mrs. Charles Middledorf, Mrs. Christopher Borman, Mrs. Henry Paul, and Mrs. Fred Zimmerman, and one son, Paul Siegert. A number of grandchildren also mourn with those who are in the shadow of bereavement. The funeral services will be held at St. John's church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Paul Eickstaedt officiating, with interment in the Lutheran cemetery. The teachers of St. John's school will act as pallbearers. E. E. Ebbert is the director.
  Julius Siegert was born in the city of Breslau, Prussia, February 2, 1847, but had lived in America since early boyhood. His father, Samuel G. Siegert, was born in the same city. The elder Siegert was liberally educated and became an educator. He began teaching in young manhood and taught in Germany until 1854. He then brought his family to America and was on the ocean thirteen weeks battling with the waves before landing at New York City. From there the father went to Buffalo, N. Y., and was a teacher in the parochial schools several years. Later he moved to Des Peres, Mo., and was connected with the parochial schools of that community until his death at the advanced age of 78 years. He married Susanna Schultz, who died in Germany. She was the mother of three children, Julius G., Charles, a resident of Chicago, and Mary, who married A. Levine of Chicago.
  Julius G. Siegert attended parochial schools taught by his father and later took the normal course in Concordia College at Fort Wayne. While he was an attendant there the college was moved to Addison, Ill. He graduated in 1867 and his first assignment of duty was as a teacher in St. John's parochial school in LaPorte, where he continued his labors until his retirement several years ago. Mr. Siegert was married in 1869 to Miss Louisa Fenker. She was born in Cincinnati, daughter of Henry and Sophie Fenker, both natives of Germany. Mrs. Siegert died in August, 1910.
  Mr. Siegert's long record as a teacher in St. John's school was marked by a fidelity to duty almost without precedent. During a period of 54 years Mr. Siegert was absent from his work for only one-half day. During the passing of the years which marked his educational career in LaPorte fitting recognition was frequently given his work by the congregation in the form of anniversary celebrations, all of which testified to the love and esteem in which Professor Siegrt was held.
  The life of Mr. Siegert was an exemplification of those things which ennoble and enrich life. His religion was his solace in the last days of his life, a faith which he lived, and which bore fruition as the years came and went with their ever increasing train of memories. Today, with his life work at an end, he sleeps well.

Siegert, Mrs. Julius - La Porte Daily Argus-Bulletin Saturday, July 30, 1910 p.5 - - Death brought the life of Mrs. Louis Siegert, wife of Prof. Julius Siegert, to a close last night, the transition taking place at 11:40 o'clock. Mrs. Siegert had been ill since January, and her condition was extremely critical for several weeks. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fenker and was born in Halem, Germany, in 1849. Since 1867 she resided in this city, and her marriage to Mr. Siegert was solemnized in 1869. She was an ideal wife and mother, living an exemplary Christian life. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran church and the Ladies' Aid society, finding in these organizations many opportunities for assistance to others which her unselfishness prompted. Surviving Mrs. Sigert are her husband and six children, Mrs. Middledorf, Mrs. Borman, Mrs. Ulrich, Mrs. Paul, Mrs. Zimmerman and Paul Siegert.
  The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at St. John's Lutheran church, with Rev. Paul Eickstaedt officiating. The interment will take place at the Lutheran cemetery. Deckers are the funeral directors.

Sieggruen (Siegreen), Fred - La Porte Daily Herald, Wed., July 27, 1904, p. 8 - - Fred Siegreen, a highly respected German-American resident of this city, passed away this morning at his home on I street. The deceased was born in Prussia, April 14, 1824, and had been a resident of La Porte since 1861. His wife passed away four years ago. Surviving him are three daughters, they being Mrs. C. J.F. Miller of La Porte, Mrs. Wm. Belzig of Chicago and Miss Marie Siegreen of this city. He was a faithful attendant at St. John's church. The funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at St. John's church. Rev. Paul Eickstaedt officiating and the burial will take place at the Lutheran cemetery, with Weir & Sievert in charge.

Sieggruen, Maria - Mrs. Maria Seagreen (sp), wife of Frederick Seagreen (sp), passed away yesterday afternoon at the family residence, 308 I street, after an illness of about a week. Mrs. Seagreen was about 70 years of age and a husband and a number of children survive her. She was a member of St. John's church , and the funeral arrangements will be announced later. W.C. Sieggruen, Mary - La Porte Herald Argus, Wed., June 15, 1949, page 8 - Sieggruen, Mary - Miss Mary Sieggruen, 87, of 508 (s/b 308) I Street, died at 2:40 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Fairview hospital. The daughter of Frederick and Maria Sieggruen, she was born in La Porte on Sept. 5, 1861 and had lived here her entire life. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran church. Surviving is one niece, Mrs. Swed C. Olsen, Long Beach, Calif. Burial services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Giese and Kimball funeral home with the Rev. Manfred E. Reinke officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran cemetery. Friends may call this evening and until time of service at the funeral chapel.

Singleton family -My grandparents and mother are buried at Kingsbury. My grandfather was Marvin Singleton and his 2nd wife was Mary Almeda LOUDON (not London). My mother is buried in the family plot there but it is not marked. Her name was Barbara Almeda Singleton Burns. She died Sept 10 1980. also , my brother, David Loudon Burns died at birth in 1953 and he is buried at the foot of Mary's grave. Olive Stephenson, who is also buried there, is the daughter of Marvin and his 1st wife Sarah. My grandparents had a store in Waterford and my mother graduated from Elston in 1943. The Singleton family was in Laporte County, Marshall Co and St. Joe. They seemed to move around alot so I've never been able to confirm when they settled here. Mary Loudon's grandmother was Eliza Norton who in my records was reported to be the first buried in Norton Cemetery. Contributed by: Maureen Chism

Siwkowski, John – (Michigan City Evening Dispatch, Thurs. 6 Sept. 1928, p. 2, c.1) - - Funeral for Aged Resident to be Saturday - - John Siwkowski, 103, Oldest Resident of Laporte County Passes Away at Home in Otis - - - John Siwkowski, 103 years of age, whose name has been inscribed in the history of Laporte county as one of the most honored of pioneers, died in his home in Otis, near here shortly before noon yesterday.
  Death came as gentle as he had lived-just the kissing of the eyelids still. For nearly three weeks the sands have ebbed, death resulting from old age. Mr. Siwkowski, through his long residence in Laporte county, was one of the few who could trace from actual experience the business growth of Michigan City and surrounding territory.
   He was born in Schubin, Poland, on Sept. 28, 1825. He was married to Mary Rossa in Poland on Nov. 5, 1861, and came to Otis immediately after.
  His wife died in Otis on Feb. 2, 1908. To Mr. Siwkowski was given the heritage of long life, years in which he reared a large family, seven children remaining to call him blessed. Six children died in infancy and a son, John Jr., of West Pullman, died a year ago.
  The following children survive: Mrs. Mary Kalbasievitz, Ludington, Mich.; Mrs. Louise Clossen, Valparaiso; Andrew Siwkowski, South Chicago; Mrs. Pauline Pocholwski, Ludington and Stella, Frank and Joseph Siwkowski, all at home. He leaves 36 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. For many years Mr. Siwkowski was one of the prominent farmers in Coolspring township, this county and for a long period was connected with the New York Central railroad. He was exceedingly active at the age of 100.
  Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's church in Otis at 9 o'clock Saturday morning. Hundreds of friends are expected gather at the home in Otis tomorrow evening to pay the last tribute to the silent form from which the breath of life had departed from Laporte county's oldest resident.

Skilly, Owen – The Chesterton Tribune - Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana; February 25, 1899; Volume 15, Number 46, Page 5, Column 3 - - Burdick. Owen Skilly, oldest son of Mrs. Skilly of Otis, died Sunday of typhoid fever. The funeral was held Tuesday from the Eight Square church. He leaves a mother and brother to mourn his loss. SLATER,CLARA     - Funeral services for Mrs. Clara C. Slater, 67, of 2902 Oakdale St., LaPorte, who died Thursday, April 3, at LaPorte Hospital, will be 2 pm Saturday at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. William M. Woodruff officiating. She was born Oct. 31 1912, in Knox Co, IN., to Arthur and Julia (Hay) Palen an was a retired employee of LaPorte Hospital. On July 14, 1928, in LaPorte, she married Harry Slater who died June 6, 1970. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lorraine Morris and Mrs. Jeannie Yoder, both of LaPorte; one son, William of San Diego, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Zook and Mrs. Mildred Bunch, both of LaPorte and one brother, Roland Palen of LaPorte. Slater - George Slater - 5/10/1997 Michigan City News Dispatch - LaPORTE - George R. Slater, 63, of LaPorte, died Thursday afternoon (May 8, 1997) at LaPorte Hospital. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date with the Rev. John J. Strebig officiating. Burial will be at Springville Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Mr. Slater was born on Feb. 18, 1934, in LaPorte, son of John W. and Bernice E. Parent Slater. Surviving are three sisters, Dorothy Slater and Phyllis Cowgill, both of LaPorte, and Patricia Van Schoyck, Mill Creek; a brother, Donald Slater, LaPorte; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Slater was employed as a grocery store helper. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Slater, John H. - Michigan City News, Sept. 19, 1901 - - John H. Slater, whose death was noted yesterday, was born June 24, 1846, in Springfield township and resided there until 16 years ago when he and his family moved to Michigan City. He was married January 28, 1882, to Miss Stella Cooper, the widow who survives. He leaves a son, Oliver, and three brothers, David and Josephus Slater, and Richard Slater, of Springfield township; also one sister, Mrs. B. Riley of Wyoming. Mr. Slater was a veteran of the civil war, having served his country faithfully and well for three years. The funeral will be held Monday morning at 11 a.m. at Hesston.

Smith, Andrew J. -   ANDREW JACKSON SMITH    1944 - -Funeral services for Andrew Jackson Smith, 70, of Rolling Prairie, who died Saturday morning at the Holy Family Hospital after an illness of 9 days, were held today at the Haverstock Chapel with the Rev. V. E. Squibb of the First Baptist Church officiating. The son of Andrew and Sarah Ann Smith, he was born in Marysville, Ohio on April 17, 1874 and moved to Indiana at the age of 13 years and came to LaPorte County from Ohio in 1909. He was a farmer. On Nov. 8, 1899 at Jasper County, he was married to Cora Shelman who survives. He was a member of the Baptist Church at Milroy, Ind., and of the Gleaner Lodge at Wanatah. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Mrs. Eva Sarah Buehrer, Rolling Prairie and Mrs. Ida May Bartmess of Walkerton; three sons, Paul A., at home; Howard J., of New Haven, Ind., and Orval J., fireman second class, at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station; 13 grandchildren; 3 brothers William T., Springdale, Ark.; B. Franklin, and S. Lewis, both of Holliday, Mo., and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Smith, LaPorte. Burial was in Pine Lake Cemetery. Smith, Asalie Caroline Warner - The Acorn, Three Oaks, Michigan; October 16, 1924 - - "FOLLOWS HUSBAND IN DEATH”
   Mrs. Wm. Smith, Pioneer of This Section, Passes Away Just Seven Weeks After Husband's Death
   Asalie Caroline Warner was born October 1st, 1849, on what was known as the Godfrey Farm in New Buffalo Township, Berrien County, Michigan, the daughter of David and Almira Weed Warner. In 1855 her parents moved to Galena Township, LaPorte County, Indiana, where, except for a year at Charlotte, Michigan, attending school, she spent the remainder of her life.
   "She taught several terms at different schools in Galena and adjoining townships during her early womanhood. "She was united in marriage to William W. Smith at Three Oaks, Michigan, March 29th, 1879, who, just seven weeks ago, preceded her to the great Beyond. "She passed away at the family home Friday morning, October 10th, 1924, at the age of 75 years, and 9 days.
  "She leaves surviving her, her children, Conger R. of Kansas City, Missouri; Miss Independence of the home; and Stanley W. of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and her grandson, Conger William Smith. "She was a faithful wife, a kind and loving mother, and a friendly and sympathetic neighbor, who will long be remembered in the community where she spent practically her entire life.
  "She was a member of the Pastime Club of the Bunker Hill District, and the Posey Chapel Ladies' Aid Society.   "The funeral was held at the Posey Chapel Church, Sunday afternoon, October 12th, the Rev. Thomas Rice of the Three Oaks, Michigan, M. E. [Ed. note: Methodist Episcopal] Church officiating. Miss Marjorie Johnson accompanied by Miss Doris Renbarger, appropriately rendered 'The City Four Square' and 'Jesus Lover of My Soul.' The remains were laid to rest beside her husband in the Posey Chapel Cemetery. "The pall-bearers, neighbors and friends, were Alva Ellenwine, George Klute, Earl W. Mayes, Lyle H. Vosburgh, Benson Williams and John W. Williams."

Rolling Prairie, Indiana - Mrs. Bertha M. Smith, 83, of 8857 N CR 500 E, died 1 p.m. Thursday, November 29, at her home following a lengthy illness. 
  She was born Jan. 12, 1896, in LaPorte County, to Joel and Ella (Waldo) Foster, and had lived here most of her life. She was a member of the Maple Grove United Methodist Church and the Ladies Society. 
   On June 18, 1928, in Valparaiso, Ind., she married Fred E. Smith, who preceded her in death in 1976. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Doris Owens, of LaPorte, Ind., and Mrs. Cecile Dodge, of Broadus Stage, Mont.; one son, Lawrence Martin, of Apache Junction, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Blanche Downey, of Gary, Ind. 
   Funeral services will be 11 a.m. ES Saturday at the H.C. Amen and Son Funeral Home, New Carlisle, Ind., with the Rev. Russell Davidson officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home today until 9 p.m. Burial will be in Foster Cemetery.

   Funeral services for Frank A. Smith, route 3, who died at 9:45 a.m. yesterday at the home of his son, Ward Smith, will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Haverstock Funeral home.

  He was born May 30, 1881, in LaPorte to Stephen and Harriet Smith and was married to Minnie Kill, who preceded him in death. 
  Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Erma Smith, Valdosta, Ga.; Mrs. Irene Sydow and Mrs. Fern Bridwell, both of Michigan City, and one son, Ward, LaPorte,; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

  Rolling Prairie, Ind. - Fred E. Smith, 92, of 8808N CR-500E died at 4:43 p.m. Saturday in LaPorte Hospital after a one year illness. 
  Mr. Smith was born March 22, 1882 at Bowling Green, Ohio , and had lived in the Rolling Prairie community for 60 years coming here from Ohio. He was a retired farmer. 
  He was married June 18, 1928 in Valparaiso to Bertha Foster Martin. 
  Surviving are his wife; three sons, Frank Smith, Calimesa, Calif.; Clifford Smith, Port Clinton, O., and Kenneth Smith, Lambertville, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Maxine Braun and Mrs. Isabelle Metrey, both of Toledo, Ohio; one stepson, Lawrence Martin, Anaconda, Mont.; two stepdaughters Mrs. Cecile Dodge, Montana and Mrs. Doris Owens, Rolling Prairie and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. 
  Funeral services will be a t 2 p.m. (EST) Tuesday at the H.C. Amen Funeral Home, New Carlisle with the Rev. George Caruso officiating. Burial will be in the Foster Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was a son of Mrs. Paulina Smith, 1603 Tennessee street, and was born in this city Oct 10, 1979. He had been living in Chicago.

SMITH, Henry H. – The Daily Herald, Tuesday, June 11, 1895
   At 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon death claimed Henry H. Smith, of 107 Railroad street, he being in his 58th year. Deceased has been troubled with heart disease for years, but some short time ago he was attacked with a lung trouble which caused the ending of his life.
 Mr. Smith was born in Adairville, Ky., in 1837 and came to this city in 1865. He was an old soldier, having been a member of a Michigan Volunteer regiment. He enlisted the second year of the war and served continuously till its close. First he entered the army as a cook but later shouldered a musket and went to the front. He was the possessor of an honorable discharge from service. Twenty-seven years ago, 1867, Mr. Smith and Lizzie Olmstead were married and have ever since resided in this city. Mr. Smith was of African extraction.
   The funeral will be held from the family residence tomorrow afternoon, at 2 o'clock. Rev. Addison Parker will officiate. The remains will be laid at rest in Patton's cemetery.

Smith, Elizabeth (Varney)  - The Daily Herald, Wednesday, January 30, 1889 - - - Mrs. E.T. Smith who was stricken with paralysis on the right side a year or so ago, had a stroke on the left side last week, from which she became helpless and speechless and died early Friday morning. The funeral was held at the Christian church, Sunday, Elder Brooks, of Rolling Prairie, officiating. Mother Smith was born in London, England, in 1823. Was married there and came to the State of New York in 1854. From there they came to this township in 1863. She became a member of the Disciple church in 1878 and lived a practical Christian life to the end. She was a quiet unassuming, industrious woman, respected by all who knew her. The best of mothers, setting her love on her children, of whom she had eight, five of whom survive her, one in LaPorte, Wm. T., two in this township, and two at Albion, Boone county, Nebraska. A large concourse of people attended her funeral, and the husband has the sympathies of a host of friends. May her life be an example for her children and others to follow. Burial in Foster Cemetery.

Smith, Edmund - History of LaPorte County, Chapman, 1880, page 706 - - Edmund T. Smith, farmer, sec. 7, a native of England, was born Dec. 20, 1822, and is the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Smith; the former died in England and the latter came to America and settled in Tompkins county, N.Y., where she died in 1855. Mr. S. ran a saw-mill; came to this county in 1864, where he followed the same business for 10 years; the balance of his time he has devoted to farming, with fair success, owning 60 acres of land. In England, July 12, 1847, he married Miss Elizabeth Varney, who was born January, 1823; 5 of their 9 children are living, namely: William T., Elizabeth J., Isabella, Henry R. and Edwin V. Mr. and Mrs. S. are members of the Christian Church. P.O., Hesston. Burial in Foster Cemetery.

Smith, Harriet E. Austin - Michigan City Dispatch, March 10, 1910, Page 8, col. 6 - - Mrs. Harriet Smith, widow of John D. Smith, died suddenly of heart disease at her home in Galena township Tuesday. Last week she was in apparently good health and was in the city visiting her daughter, Mrs. James N. Billings. The deceased was 77 years of age and had resided in Galena township nearly all of her life. She is survived by two sons, and two daughters, Mrs. John Steward of Chehalis, Wash.; Mrs. Billings of this city, Kan Smith, a member of local fire department; and Frank Smith, who resides on the homestead. Burial in Foster Cemetery.

The deceased was one of the oldest men in our township and an early settler here. He leaves a wife and four children, A.K. and B.F. Smith of this place and Mrs. James N. Billings of Michigan City and Ellen Steward of Washington, besides numerous relatives and a host of acquaintances. He was buried at Foster's cemetery Tuesday."

Smith Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 for Mrs. Matilda E. Smith, age 60, who died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Holy Family hospital after an illness of six weeks. She was the wife of Henry Smith of near Hanna. The daughter of Henry and Wilhelmine Manthay, she was born in Cass township on April 23, 1882. She lived in Cass township all her life. She was married Oct. 26, 1915 to Mr. Smith at the Wanatah Lutheran church. She was a member of the Hanna Lutheran church and the Ladies Aid society of the same church . Surviving Mrs. Smith, besides her husband, are two sons, Clarence, of Hanna, and Wilber, living at home; a foster grandchild; five sisters, Mrs Emma Rosenbaum, Wanatah, Mrs. Ida Rudolph, Valparasio, Mrs Ottilie Fritz, North Judson, Mrs. Bertha Werner, Hanna, Mrs. Ella Teemer, South Bend; three brothers, Henry Manthay, Hanna, Emil Manthay, Wanatah, and Fred Manthay , of South Bend. A sister preceded her in death. First services will be held at the Smith home, one mile southwest of Hanna, with later services at 2 at the Hanna Lutheran church. The Rev. Smith, Otto - Ottos F Smith, MC Dispatch Weekly, Thrus 3 Aug 1905, P8 C1 - Mrs. Charles F Wailes (?Xerox copy blurred) received the sad intelligence Friday afternoon of the death of her cousin , Otto Smith which occurred that morning at the home of the young man's mother, Mrs. Pauline Smith, Chicago. Mr. Smith was twent five years of age and was born in this city, being the son of Stanislaus Sith, who d ied here about ten years ago. Mrs. Smith and children moved to Chicago later and have since resided there. Deceased had been in pour health during the past six years, suffering with lumbago and rhennialism. Consumption developed a few months ago and resulted in his death. Mrs. Smith is a sister of Mrs. Charles Harbart of this city and has a number of other relatives here.
  The remains were brought here Sunday from Chicago for interment. They were accompanied by the following relatives: Mrs. Pauline Smith, mother of the deceased; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith; Mr and Mrs Hartwig and children, oliver and Ellsworth; Harry and Emil Smith and Miss Lillie Smith. A committee of members of Lakeview tent., No 128 K. O. T. M., consisting of the following sir knights, also accompanied the remains; M. J. Murphy, Robert Heiner, C E Clark, M E Donnelian and J J Higgins. The cottage was met at the Michigan Central depot fo a delegation of sir knights from Marbor tent, No. 14, who acted as pallbearers and conducted the ritualistic services of the order at the cemetery. Rev. J G Hoch also accompanied teh remains to the cemetery and conducted services at the grave. The visiting sir knights returned home on the boat Sunday evening and the relatives returned this afternoon.

Smith, Robert K.   - History of LaPorte County, Chapman, 1880, page 706   "Robert K. Smith, farmer, sec. 20; P.O., Hesston; was born in 1797 in Sussex county, N.J.; his parents, John and Mary Smith, moved to Ohio about 1806, where they remained for a number of years. In 1825 he married Miss Ruth Stull, who was born in 1797, in Washington county, Penn., and they have had 7 children, 3 of whom are living; John D., Valentine F. and H.E. Mr. S. has always worked hard and has obtained considerable land which he has divided among his children, feeling that such a division would be more satisfactory while he is living, and save the perplexity and expense of settling his affairs after his death. His home is with his eldest son, E.E. Father Smith came to this county in 1835, and built his house where his son's barn now stands; he has had fair success as a farmer.

  Robert K. Smith was born in Sussex county, New Jersey, on Christmas day of 1797, and was a little lad of seven summers when he accompanied his parents on their removal to Tribal county, Ohio, the family home being established in Brookfield township. There he was reared and married. He wedded Miss Ruth Stull, whose birth occurred in Washington county, Pennsylvania, on the 31st of August, 1797. She was reared in Trumbull county, Ohio, from the age of three years, removing to the Buckeye state with her parents, who were of German descent. Her father was also a Revolutionary soldier. 
  Mr. and Mrs. Robert K. Smith came to LaPorte county, Indiana, traveling across the country with an ox team, in 1835. In the same year they took up their abode on section 20, Galena township, where Mr. Smith secured land from the government, and upon the wild and unimproved tract he built his first home, a little log cabin sixteen by twenty feet. He continued to reside upon that farm until his eighty-seventh year, when he was called to his final rest. He was a member of the Baptist church in early life, and after coming to LaPorte county joined the Freewill Baptist church. In his political views he was a Democrat, and cast his first presidential ballot for Andrew Jackson. His wife died in her seventy-eighth year, and thus passed away two of the honored pioneers of LaPorte county, who had long been respected and worthy residents of this section of the state.

Smith, Tyrone Eugene - LaPorte Herald Argus May 25, 1959 Pages 1 and 2 Accidental Shooting Is Fatal To Boy Funeral services will be held at the Haverstock Funeral home tomorrow morning at 10 for a 16-year-old LaPorte youth accidentally killed by a friend while watching television here Saturday night. Tyrone Smith, son of Mrs. Juanita Smith, 522 Niesen street, and of Grover C. Smith, South Bend, was killed instantly at approximately 9:25 by a .38 caliber bullet fired by Billy Unger, 14, which passed through Smith's right temple.
  The shooting took place in the John Supanik home, 322 Park street, as the two boys and the 15 year-old son of the Supanik's, John, were watching TV in the rumpus room. According to Det. Sgt. Jerry Lubs, who investigated, and County Coroner Sterling R. Peak, there in no clear account of how the shooting occurred as the Supanik boy was watching the television when Smith was shot and the Unger lad became ill and was in no condition for questioning after the accident. Taken To Hospital He was taken to Fairview hospital from the Supanik home and stayed there overnight. Peak said young Supanik didn't look until he heard the noise and turned his head. He added that there is possibility of a coroner's inquest following further investigation of the accident and questioning of Unger. Smith died from injuries caused by the .38 caliber slug which passed through his skull and brain, Peak said. According to his doctor today, Unger has sufficiently recovered to allow questioning at the police station later today. When investigating officers arrived at the scene they reported they found Smith lying on his back "in a pool of blood on the floor". Several .22 caliber shells and four loaded .38 caliber shells were also scattered about the room with one discharged .38 caliber shell lying near the head of the victim. The gun, a .38 caliber revolver, had been placed on top of the television set by Harold Salzer, a brother-in-law of the Supanik's, after it was dropped on the floor by Unger. The police report disclosed that the gun was "apparently loaded" Saturday night sometime shortly before the shooting. It also noted that the Unger youth had loaded the revolver during a previous visit and was reprimanded by Supanik who told him the guns were not to be loaded in the house. Lubs said there were several guns in racks in the room in addition to the death weapon. Following the shooting, police were notified by a neighbor, John H. Cholewa, 325 Park street. The victim's father was notified in South Bend. Investigating officers were Lee Fredrickson, Gene Christian, Capt. Hi Kirkham, Chief Leo J. Kramer and Lubs. Police said the investigation is continuing. Besides his parents, Smith is survived by two brothers and a sister, Ronald, David, and Vicki Lynn, all at home in LaPorte, and a grandmother, Mrs. Anita B. Smith, Rolling Prairie. An 8-B student in the LaPorte Junior High school, he was born on Oct. 8, 1944 in LaPorte. Friends may call at the Haverstock chapel this evening and until time of services tomorrow. The Rev. A. C. Van Rie, St. Joseph's Catholic church, will officiate and burial will take place in Pine Lake cemetery.

   Well Known and Respected Citizen of the Vicinity. One of the Early Settlers of This Region - Came Here in 1866
   William Watson Smith was born in Milton Township, Cass County, Michigan, November 18th, 1840. "His early life was spent near Niles, Michigan, moving with his parents to the present family home in 1866 where he has since lived. He was married to Asalie Caroline Warner, March 29th, 1879 at Three Oaks, Michigan, who with his children, Conger R. of Kansas City, Missouri, Miss Independence of the home and Stanley R. of Three Oaks, Michigan; his sisters Mrs. George Barnes and Mrs. Henry Webster of Iowa, a brother Nathanael W. of Oklahoma and grandson Conger William Smith survive. "He passed away at his home in Galena Township, LaPorte County, Indiana, August 22nd, 1924 at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 4 days.
  "On September 9th, 1861 at Niles, Michigan, Mr. Smith enlisted in Company "E", 2nd Michigan Infantry, and served with distinction in the same company during the Civil War and mustered out at De Laney House, D. C., July 28th, 1865. He participated in the major engagements of Second Bull run, Shantilly, Fredricksberg, Vicksburg, Knoxville, the Battle of the Wilderness and Petersburg. During the siege of Petersburg during the summer of 1864, he was severely wounded, recovering however and returning to Petersburgh before the city fell and the surrender of Lee at Appomattox. He was a lifelong member of the Charles Woodruff Post No. 85, G. A. R. at Three Oaks, Michigan.
"The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, August 24th at the Posey Chapel Church, Rev. Albert Dawe of the Congregational Church of Three Oaks, Michigan, officiating. The Misses Grace Clark and Opal Hutchinson appropriately rendered 'lead Kindly Light' and 'Beautiful Isle of Somewhere'. A military escort composed of William Claypool, Sylvester Copeland, William Shreeve, George L. Stevens and Theron P. Starr, all the surviving members of the Charles Woodruff Post, and Lawrence Schrader, Mellon Kramer, Carroll Grover, Herbert Flick, Homer Hageman and Arie Van Genderen, accompanied the remains. The pall-bearers were neighbors and friends who were raised in the immediate vicinity. Alva Ellenwine, George Klute, Earl W. Mayes, Lyle H. Vosburgh, Benson Williams, and John W. Williams.
  "The remains were laid to rest in the Posey Chapel Cemetery." "Mr. Smith, more familiarly known as "Billy" Smith, will long be be remembered for his interpretive readings at Old Settlers meetings and other social gatherings in this vicinity."

She was the wife of Henry Smith of near Hanna. The daughter of Henry and Wilhelmine Manthay, she was born in Cass township on April 23, 1882. She lived in Cass township all her life. She was married Oct. 26, 1915 to Mr. Smith at the Wanatah Lutheran church. She was a member of the Hanna Lutheran church and the Ladies Aid society of the same church . Surviving Mrs. Smith, besides her husband, are two sons, Clarence, of Hanna, and Wilber, living at home; a foster grandchild; five sisters, Mrs Emma Rosenbaum, Wanatah, Mrs. Ida Rudolph, Valparasio, Mrs Ottilie Fritz, North Judson, Mrs. Bertha Werner, Hanna, Mrs. Ella Teemer, South Bend; three brothers, Henry Manthay, Hanna, Emil Manthay, Wanatah, and Fred Manthay, of South Bend. A sister preceded her in death. First services will be held at the Smith home, one mile southwest of Hanna, with later services at 2 at the Hanna Lutheran church. The Rev. Smith, Thomas - Daily Herald, Monday, Dec. 20, 1897 - The death of Thomas Smith at the advanced age of 82 years took place at his home on the Michigan road, 5 miles from town, at 5 o'clock Sunday morning. Consumption was the cause. He was born in England but at an early age came to this country and located in New York state. He has been a resident of this county for many years. Two sons and daughters survive him. He was a member of the Rolling Prairie Masonic lodge and under the auspices of that body he will be laid at rest. The funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning from the house. Interment in the Rossburg cemetery.

Sonnenberg - Mrs. Amalia Sonnenberg, 95, former Sawyer, Mich., resident died this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Julius Pudell, R.R. 3, Benton Harbor, Mich. Friends may call at the H. B. Connelly Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Mrs. Sonnenberg had made her home with a son, Edward at Michigan City, and Mrs. Pudell, since the death of her husband several years ago. She lived in Sawyer 40 years. She was born in Poland Oct. 31, 1860 and came to the United States in 1901. In addition to the son and daughter with whom she lived, other survivors are a son, Joh, Benton Harbor, Mich., 20 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Mr. Sonnenberg had lived most of his life in Michigan City. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a prisoner of war in Germany about 10 months. He was retired electrician from Joy Manufacturing, after 29 years. He was a member of Fellowship Assembly of God Church, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 23, Michigan City, and th Ex-POW Organization. Sonnenberg - Fred Sonnenberg 77 year old Sawyer, MI farmer died at 6 yesterday morning at his home following a year's illness with heart trouble. Mr. Sonnenberg was born March 26, 1862 in Germany. He was married 56 years ago in Russia to Amalie Kachinski, who survives. The family came to this country 38 years ago after spending one year in Canada came to the Sawyer community. are four children, Mrs. Julius Pudell, Coloma, Mich., Edward Sonnenberg, Michigan City and Fred and John Sonnenberg, Sawyer, twenty-one grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services are to be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Trinity Lutheran church in Sawyer. Rev. A. W. Schury, pastor of the church, will officiate and interment will be made in the Riverside cemetery, north of Three Oaks. (Jeane) Church, New Buffalo, MI; 10 grandchildren, five great grandchildren; and a brother, Edward (Honey) Sonnenberg, Dallas, TX. A brother Floyd Sonnenberg, preceded him in death. Mr. Sonnenberg was a resident of Michigan City for more than 60 years. He was a welding inspector for Cole Engineering, South Bend, IN; an electronics technician for Television Associates, Michigan City; and was self-employed as a radio and television repairman. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Skwiat American Legion Post 451, and a lifetime member of Moose Lodge 980. Southe - Mrs. Louella Southe, 60, of 1206 J Street, died at 8:55 Saturday night at her home. She was born December 28, 1895 in Marshall County, Indiana. Mrs. Southe had lived here since 1917, coming from Groverton, Indiana. She was married September 1928 in LaPorte to William Southe. She was a member of the Assembly of God church. Surviving are her husband, William, one son, Richard Mohoney, Roswell, N.M; four sisters, Mrs. Thomas Logos, LaPorte; Mrs. Lorraine Thomas, and Mrs. Goldie Black, both of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Mrs. Louis Kohlman, Michigan City; six brothers, Jesse, Clyde, Murriel, Clifford, and Melvin Freese, all of LaPorte, and Curtis Freese, Bluffton, Indiana; and two grandchildren. One sister preceded her in death. Funeral services will be at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon at the Haverstock Funeral home with the Rev. W.R. Wainscott officiating. Burial will be in the Union Mills cemetery. Friends may call at the Haverstock chapel today and until time of services.

The remains will be brought to La Porte tomorrow afternoon on the 3 o'clock car and taken to Patton cemetery for burial. Weir & Sievert are in charge.

Spooner, Wilbur D - Herald Press at St. Joseph, Michigan - Jan 15, 1946 - - Wilbur D. Spooner: Three Oaks, Jan 15, <Special> Wilbur D. Spooner, 88, died at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Berrien County Hospital after an illness of three weeks. He had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Phoebe Noble of 605 Magnolia street in Three Oaks. Born Feb 23, 1857, in Ashtabula, Ohio, he was married in 1891 in Coloma to Melissa Harris, who died in 1928.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Noble of Three Oaks, and Mrs. Nora Buchanan (Buchan) of Michigan City, Ind., and two sons, William of Michigan City, Ind and Lem (this is probably Leon) of Cascade, Mich. He also leaves 20 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and two brothers who live at St. Louis Mo.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Connelly funeral home and burial will be made in Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City, Ind.

Holiday, both of LaPorte, three sons, Jesse W, James W, and Jeffrey W., Stevens, all of LaPorte; two grandsons, her parents, Jr. and Mrs. Jess Freese of LaPorte, one brother, Jesse Freese of LaPorte, and four sisters, Mrs. Darlene Wawok, Mrs. Jon (Donna) Hall, Mrs. Larry (Debby) Lain, and Mrs. Jerry (Denice) Enochs all of LaPorte. Funeral services will be 11 am Wednesday at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. James Bates officiating. Stanage, Edith (Sands) – Herald Argus (La Porte), January 14, 1944 - - Mrs. Edith E. Stanage of 302 Oak Street, Three Oaks, died at 4:30 o’clock this morning at the Holy Family hospital following an operation. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Sands, she was born on Jan. 6, 1890 and had lived in Three Oaks for 37 years. She and her husband operated a grocery store in Three Oaks. She was a member of the Free Methodist church. Surviving are her husband, Claude, Sr.,; one son, Claude, Jr. of Dowagiac; two grandchildren and five brothers. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. STEPHENS, FAUD - La Porte Herald Argus, Monday, 19 Jan 1953, p2 - - Faud Stephens, 77, of Chicago, died yesterday morning in Chicago. The son of Dallas and Viola Stephens, he was born in Union Mills Oct. 18, 1875. He had lived in Chicago for 50 years, going there from Union Mills. Mr. Stephens was a retired engineer for the B. and O. railroad. Survivors include his wife, Loretta, of Chicago; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Nelson and Mrs. Jessie Mill, both of Chicago; both of Chicago; one sister, Mrs. Pearl Moore, of Union Mills; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Kosanke Brothers funeral home in Union Mills. The Rev. Cecil Atkinson will officiate. Burial will be in the Union Mills cemetery.

STINCHCOMB, SARAH – Unknown La Porte newspaper, 9 November 1923 - - Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Stinchcomb, 79, who had lived at Rolling Prairie nearly all of her life, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Howard Fishburn, in Valparaiso Wednesday afternoon. The aged woman died of heart disease. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Vangieson who moved to Rolling Prairie from New York State when Mrs. Stinchcomb was two years old. She was born on March 10 1844. W. L. Stinchcomb, her husband died eight years ago. Since that time Mrs. Stinchcomb had been making her home in Rolling Prairie, Chicago, and Valparaiso with her daughters. The deceased woman was a member of the Rebekah lodge of Rolling Prairie and of the Christian Church. Funeral services were held at Rolling Prairie this afternoon with burial in the Rolling Prairie cemetery. Surviving are three children, Mrs. W. H. McCarty of Chicago, B. L. Stinchcomb of Michigan City, and Mrs. Fishburn. Joseph Vangieson of Chicago is the only surviving brother.

Stoner - Albert Lincoln Stoner, age 72, passed away suddenly at 8:30 a.m. At his home on rural route 1, Rolling Prairie. The son of Mr. And Mrs. Jacob Stoner, Mr. Stoner was born near Rolling Prairie on Oct. 12, 1861, and lived in that vicinity all his life. He was a farmer. He was married on Nov. 30, 1892, in Rolling Prairie to Mary Nichols, who survives. Others surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Rose Kelsey of La Porte, Mrs. Vers Butler of Rolling Prairie, Mrs. Aletha Sanger of Mishawaka, Mrs. Evelyn Bennett of South Bend, and Dorothy at home; a son, Robert at home; 14 grandchildren; five brothers, Andrew, Ellsworth, Walter and David Stoner of Rolling Prairie and Vernon Stoner of La Porte, and two sisters, Mrs. Kate Hunt of Mill Creek and Mrs. Etta Dudley of Rolling Prairie. A daughter preceeded in death. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., standard time, at the home, and at 2 p.m. at the Rolling Prairie Christian church, the Rev. John Clark officiating. The body may be viewed from this evening until the time of the funeral. Burial will be in the Baptist cemetery at Rolling Prairie with O. M, Haverstock in charge.

STONER, ARETTA LEVINA – LaPorte Herald Argus, Mon, June 2, 1952 pg. 2 - - Mrs. Aretta Levina Stoner, 82, of route 1, North Liberty, Ind., died at 9:30 Saturday evening at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Albert Wilson, and Mr. Wilson at North Liberty after an illness of four months. The daughter of Henry and Nancy Hostetler, she was born March 25, 1870 in St. Joseph County where she lived all her life. She was married March 9, 1892 near Rolling Prairie to Ellsworth Stoner. She was a member of the Sauktown Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughter, Mrs. Wanda Wilson of North Liberty and Mrs. Edna Haverstock of Rolling Prairie; three grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Siddles of Michigan City, three brothers, James Alvin Hostetler and Joseph Allen Hostetler, both of New Carlisle, and Marion Llewlyn Hostetler of North Liberty; and five great grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in 1936. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon at the Wilson residence and at 2 o'clock at the Sauktown Church of Christ. The Rev. O.D. (1936) - - Funeral services for Ellsworth Stoner, rural route 2, LaPorte will be held Monday at 1:45 at his home and at 2:30 at the Sauktown church, the Rev. Ben Cross officiating. Mr. Stoner died Friday morning at 11:30 at his home after an illness of three months. O.M. Haverstock will be in charge of the funeral and nephews of Mr. Stoner will serve as pallbearers. The body may be viewed at the home until time for the funeral. Mr. Stoner was born in Wills township July 28, 1863 the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Stoner. He lived in this county practically all his life. He was united in marriage March 9, 1892 near Rolling Prairie to Areta Levina Hostetler, who survives. Mr. Stoner was a member of the Church of the Brethren. The surviving relatives include the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Edna Haverstock of LaPorte and Mrs. Wanda Wilson at home; three grandchildren, Donald and Lloyd Haverstock and Walter Wilson; one sister, Mrs. S.O. Storm, John Buried in Eight Square Cemetery - Obit appeared - Michigan City Dispatch Weekly Aug 3, 1905
   John Storms, an old settler of this locality and one of the wealthiest farmers in this vicinity, died at 6 o'clock Thursday evening at his home, seven miles south of this city on the county line road. His death was due to paralysis, he having suffered a third stroke several months ago. He had been confined to his bed for some time and was practically helpless. Mr. Storms was born in Germany eight- three years ago and was married in that country. He came to Michigan City over half a century ago and located at Otis. Later he purchased a small farm and has resided in the same locality continuously up to the time of his death. He was a hard working, industrious citizen and as a result of his energy and thrift succeeded in accumulating a large fortune being the owner of several valuable farms just over the line in Porter County. He had made Michigan City his principal trading point and was therefore well known here. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. C.R.    The funeral of Mr. Storms was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Lutheran church in Otis. Rev. Pelzin, the pastor conducted the services, delivering addresses in both German and English. The funeral was attended by the country people for many miles around and was one of the largest held in Otis in many Years, Mr. Storms having been a pioneer of the community and a highly respected resident.

"JOHN STORMS is a native of Prussia, born March 23, 1820, being one of the three sons of CHRISTIAN and KATE (MICHAEL) STORMS, who were born, married and died in Prussia. JOHN STORMS, lived with his parents until he reached his majority, and afterward worked as a laborer until he came to the United States, in the year 1857, when he came to Porter County, Ind., whre he worked for some time as a laborer; he purchased his first land in 1865, and now has 155 acres. On October 9, 1843, he married to MARY SHUTT, also a native of Germany. To this union there have been born six children - AUGUST, CHRISTIAN, FRANK, HENRY, MINNIE (now Mrs. Dr. Warren of Otis) and EMMA. Mr. and Mrs. STORMS are members of the Lutheran Church of Otis. Swanson, Sarah Jane - Wednesday, 25 April 1944 - LaPorte Herald-Argus - - TO BURY WOMAN, 113, HERE FRIDAY - - - "Burial of Mrs. Sarah Jane Swanson, 113 years of age, who moved from LaPorte to Chicago in 1902, will be made in Patton Cemetery Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The body may be viewed at Cutler Brothers chapel Friday morning. Mrs. Swanson, believed to have been the oldest native-born American in the nation, died yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Schlossman, 9855 Exchange Avenue, Chicago. She had been in failing health for several weeks. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Baptist church, 90th Street and Houston Avenue, Chicago.
Born in Chillicothe, O., Feb. 1, 1831, Mrs. Swanson lived in LaPorte from 1880 until 1902. Her husband, Swan, died in 1901 at what was then 201 Short Street. In 1902 she moved to Chicago and for the past 22 years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Schlossman. Three other daughters and a son survive.
Mrs. Swanson’s prized birthday greetings from Gov. Horner of Illinois and President Roosevelt. One of her last wishes was that she be buried in the family lot in Patton Cemetery.
Mrs. Swanson is survived by a number of more or less distant relatives in this community.   Miss Alice K. Strauch, 58, of 316 Grove St., LaPorte, died Friday, Feb. 18, at 11:39 p.m. at LaPorte Hospital, following an illness of two weeks. 
  She was born April 24, 1924, in Mishawaka, Ind., to Charles W. and Ellenora (Bessler) Strauch, and had lived here since 1970. She was a member of Galena Baptist Church. 
  Surviving are five sisters, Mrs Charles (Lovella) Hickman of LaPorte, Mrs. William (Jo) Harber of Rolling Prairie, Ind., Mrs. Leo (Eilene) Settles of Guys, Tenn., Mrs. Richard (Louise) Rodgers of Delona, Fla., and Mrs. Elinor Fultz of Winter Park, Fla.; three brothers, Marion of LaPorte, Charles Jr. of South Bend, Ind., and Roger of Rolling Prairie and a number of nieces and nephews. Her parents and two sisters preceded her in death. 
  Private funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. B.J. Adkins officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Foster Cemetery.

   Charles William Strauch, 86, of Fountainview Terrace Nursing Home, LaPorte, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 12:05 p.m. at LaPorte Hospital. 
   He was born Sept. 24, 1893, in St. Paul, Minn., to Albert and Caroline (Hintz) Strauch and had lived here since 1938, coming from Marshall County, Ind. 
  On April 25, 1917, in Logansport, Ind., he married Ellenora Bessler who died Oct. 8, 1971. 
  Surviving are three sons, Marion of LaPorte; Charles of South Bend, Ind., and Roger of Rolling Prairie, Ind.; six daughters, Mrs. Louise Rogers of Winter Park, Fla.; Mr. Jo Harber of Rolling Prairie; Mrs. Eleanor Fultz of Mishawaka, Ind.,; Mrs. Eileen Settles of Cleveland, Ohio and Mrs. Lovella Hickman and Alice Strauch, both of LaPorte; 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three brothers, Alolph of Crown Point, Ind.; Ernest of Logansport, Ind., and Henry of Eau Clair, Wis. Two daughters preceded him in death. 
  Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Rahle officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. this evening and from 2-4 and 7-9 Friday. Burial will be in Foster Cemetery.

   Funeral services for Mrs. Ellenora Strauch, 73, route 1, Rolling Prairie, who died at 6:30 a.m. Friday at the Dora Lynn Nursing home, South Bend, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Haverstock funeral home. The Rev. Elmer C. Johnston will officiate and burial will be in Foster cemetery, LaPorte county. Friends may call at the funeral home tonight and until time of services. 
  She was born July 30, 1897 in Logansport to Fred and Bertha (Gangwer) Bassler. She was married in Logansport to Charles Strauch, April 35, 1917. 
  Surviving are three sons, Marion, New Carlisle; Charles, South Bend and Roger, Rolling Prairie; six daughters, Mrs. Roland R. Rogers, Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Eleanor Fultz, Mishawaka; Mrs. Eileen Settles, Cleveland, O.; Mrs. Joan Harber, Rolling Prairie and Miss Alice Strauch and Mrs. Lovella Hickman, both of LaPorte; 225 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mr. Bertha Bechtold, South Bend, and Mrs. Mary Horn, Grass Creek, and two brothers, Edward Bassler, Macy, Id., and George Bassler, Kewanna, Ind.

Surface - Ralph K. Surface Dies; Headed Industry Here - News Dispatch, Michigan City, IN, Mon. 20 May 1957, p. 1, c. 7.
Ralph K. Surface, 53, 2606 Frazho St., St. Clair Shores, Mich., died at Cottage Hospital, Detroit, Mich., Saturday. Death was attributed to a heart ailment from which he suffered for some time. He was currently vice president and general manager of R. C. Mahon Co. and prior to accepting that position two years ago he was vice president and general manager of Michiana Products Corp. for 15 years. Funeral services will be a 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Carlisle Funeral Home with Dr. E. E. Franklin, pastor of the First Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home tomorrow evening and Wednesday until the hour of service. Mr. Surface was born at Mason City, IL, Nov. 23, 1903. He was married to Ethel Cassiday, who survives. Also surviving are two sons: Kenneth and Richard, both of Detroit, and two brothers, Charles, Mason City, Iowa, and Walter, Bloomington, IL.

Sutherland, Mr. Samuel - The Acorn, Three Oaks, Michigan - Apr 24 1903 - - - Mr. Samuel Sutherland died last Sunday at his home about five miles south of town, at the advanced age of seventy-nine years. The funeral was held on Tuesday at the residence and was attended by a large number of relatives and friends, among them being the Gable families and Mrs. F.M. Breece of Three Oaks. The interment was made at Foster cemetery. Mr. Sutherland was an industrious man and had acquired considerable means; more than that, he had gained a host of friends, who will mourn with the numerous relatives.

Sweitzer, Theodore Miller – Died March 1932 - - Theodore Sweitzer, age 35, d. 26 Mar 1932 - who was found dead in bed at the home of his mother, Mrs. Frederica Sweitzer, in Union Mills Saturday morning, will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30, the Rev. H.B. Parker of Union Mills officiating.
 Burial will be in Union Mills cemetery with Kosanke Brothers of Union Mills in charge. Mr. Sweitzer was born in Union Mills on Jan. 15, 1897, and lived there all his life. He was employed as a barber for several years in La Porte and Michigan City. He was married on Nov. 30, 1921, in Michigan City to Myrtle Erickson, who survives. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, of the Scottish Rite Masons of Chicago and of the American Legion.
Others surviving are a sister, Mary, at home; two aunts, Mrs. Theodore W. Swift of Detroit and Mrs. George Gilpin of Minot, N.D., and an uncle, Gus Sweitzer, of La Porte. The father, John Sweitzer, preceded in death on Aug. 15, 1927.

Sweitzer, Mrs. Frederica Miller – Died June 1936 - - Funeral services for Mrs. Frederica Miller Sweitzer, 66, of Union Mills, (d. 6 June 1936) who passed away at the Fairview hospital Saturday night at 10 o'clock, will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 (DST) at the home with the Rev. Martin Prehn officiating. Mrs. Sweitzer was ill for about seven months. She died of heart trouble.
Mrs. Sweitzer was the widow of John Sweitzer, former La Porte county coroner. She was born at Union Mills on Nov. 27, 1869, and had lived there all her life. She was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church of Union Mills, the Ladies Aid, and the Eastern Star of Union Mills. Mrs. Sweitzer was the church organist for about 25 years. She also was a Sunday school teacher. In November, 1892, she was married to John Sweitzer at Wellsboro. Surviving are one daughter, Mary Margaret, at home; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Theodore Sweitzer of Michigan City; two sisters, Mrs. George Gilpin of Big Fork, Mont., and Mrs. Theodore W. Swift of Detroit, Mich.; one brother-in-law, Gust Sweitzer of La Porte. A number of nephews, nieces, and other relatives also survive. Burial will be in the Union Mills cemetery with Kosanke Brothers.

SWEITZER, JOHN G. - Died Aug 1927 - John Sweitzer, 60, coroner of La Porte County from 1921 to 1925, died at 2:30 a.m. this morning at his home in Union Mills.(d. 15 Aug 1927) He had been ill for about six weeks with heart trouble and complications. Mr. Sweitzer was born in La Porte 12 Jul 1867, and lived here until he was 18 years. He was employed in the furniture and undertaking establishment when he was 14 years old. About 40 years ago he went to Union Mills and has been in the undertaking business since. He was married about 30 years ago to Fredericka Miller who survives. Mr. Sweitzer is also survived by a son, Theodore, and daughter, Mary, and a brother, G. A. Sweitzer, 101 Rose St., this city.    The deceased man was a member of the Presbyterian Church and affiliated with the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges. Mr. Sweitzer was popular throughout the county as evidenced in the fact that when he was elected coroner in 1920, he received all but one of the votes in Hanna Twp and all but 9 of the votes in Noble Twp. He was a strong supporter of the Republican Party. Funeral services will be held at 230pm Wednesday afternoon at the home in Union Mills with the Rev. A. H. Kenna of this city and the Rev. W. P. Fink of Union Mills officiating.
Burial will be in Union Mills cemetery. F. A. Lapell of Valparaiso is the undertaker in charge.

SWITZER/SWEITZER - - Schweitzer, Mrs. Christina - La Porte Daily Herald, Tuesday, 14 May 1907 - - - Christina Schweitzer, for more than 40 years a resident of La Porte, who died Sunday night at her home, 208 Division street, after an illness of two weeks of peritonitis, as noted in yesterday's Herald, was before her marriage, Christina Hoch. She was born 74 years ago in Goenningen, Wuertemberg, Germany, where she married Conrad Frederick Schweitzer in 1861. The couple came to La Porte in 1866 and had since resided here, Mr. Schweitzer being a well-known gardener. He survives, as do two sons, John Schweitzer, postmaster at Union Mills, and Gust Schweitzer, traveling salesman for a Chicago wholesale grocery. Two children died in Germany, another died on the Atlantic Ocean and two had died since the family came to this country. The deceased was a woman who had suffered the pangs of much trouble during her life, but through it her faith in the supreme guidance never wavered and belief that in the end all would be right was at all times strong. She raised three families, two besides her own. In 1893 she took the 9-day-old child or Mrs. Henry Brenn and brought him up. A few years ago he was accidentally drowned in Stone Lake. She also took care of the children of August Rosencranz. She was a devout member of the German Methodist Episcopal church and belonged to the Ladies' society. Burial Patton Cemetery.

SWEITZER, GUS A. – Herald Argus, 17 Jan 1949 - - - Gus A. Sweitzer, 75, of 907 Linwood Avenue, died Saturday night at 7 o'clock at the Holy Family hospital after an illness of two weeks. The son of Conrad and Christina Sweitzer, he was born in La Porte on March 4, 1878 and had lived here all his life. He operated the Rose Street grocery for a few years, and then was a wholesale grocery salesman for 40 years. He was married to Myrtle B. Miller of Union Mills in 1902. Mrs. Sweitzer died in 1943. Mr. Sweitzer was a Methodist and a life long member of the Elks lodge here. Surviving, are three sons, Glenn of Chicago, John L., Michigan City, and William E., La Porte, and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at Cutler Brothers chapel with the Dr. S .Arthur Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Patton cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel this evening and until time of service.

Syfskoske, Mrs. John – (Michigan City Evening News, Thurs. Feb. 6, 1908, p. 8. c.5) - - Mrs. John Syfskoske, and old resident of Coolspring township, died Monday afternoon and the funeral was held this morning at St. Mary's church in Otis. A number of relatives and friends from this city attended the services including Mr. and Mrs. John Rosa, Vincent Milzarek, Mrs. William Poholski, Mrs. Frank Timm, Miss Victoria Rosa, Miss Anna Milzarek, Miss Margaret Rosa, Mrs. K. Wosniack, Miss Mary Wosniack, John Michael and Jacob Rosa. The deceased was 67 years of age and had been a resident of this county for 43 years. She is survived by her husband and eight children, four sons and four daughters. Also two brothers and two sisters. One of the brothers is John Rosa of this city and one sister is Mrs. Joseph Milzarek of Coolspring township, while one brother and one sister are in the old country. Her death was due to a tumor from which she had been ailing over a year, having been bedfast several months.

Szynski, Jacob -    LaPorte, Ind. - Jacob Szynski, 71, R. R. 2, New Carlisle, died at 6:05 am.m yesterday at the Holy Family Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. (EST) Thursday at St. John's Canty Church, Rolling Prairie, withRev. Henry Smartz officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Canty Cemetery. Friends may call at the Essling Funeral Home, La Porte ater 1 p.m. tomorrow. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home by members of the Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. tomorrow and by the parish Rosary Society at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Szynski was retired from Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. He was married to Michaeleen Laskowski, who survives. Also surviving are four daughters and four sisters.
