Rambo, Isaac N. - June 25, 1900 no source given - Isaac N. Rambo of Noble township, who died Tuesday afternoon of stomach and heart trouble at his home was a son of Absalom and Charlotte (Evans) Rambo, was born in Wayne county, Ind., in 1823, and was of English descent on his father’s side and of Scotch on his mother’s side. His father was a native of Virginia and his mother of Maryland.. He came to LaPorte county in the spring of 1830 and located first in Scipio township, where he lived six years and then went to Whitley county. After having lived there one year he came back to Noble township. He was married in 1847 to Miss Clarissa Canfield, who died about ten years after their marriage. Four children were born to them. He was married the second time to Miss Jane Fredrickson, who survives her husband. He had served as trustee of Noble township, road supervisor and had always been foremost in advocating that which would benefit the community. He resided in the city of LaPorte for a time several years ago, conducting a meat market while here. Politically he was an ardent Republican. He was long, well and favorably known to the people of the county. He was a Mason, which order will have charge of the funeral services this afternoon at the late residence of the deceased. Burial in Union Mills Cemetery.

RANDALL, Catherine Ann - Michigan City News Feb 6, 1913 - - - Mrs R.D. Randall of near Kinsbury, sister of A.F. Earl of this city and a former resident of Michigan city, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Quigley of LaPorte, aged 73 years. The deceased was ill for several months, having been stricken at her home near Kingsbury last August, since which time she has been under the tender care of her daughter at LaPorte. The deceased was born in Lee County ---- and came to Michigan City in the early days with her family. Forty years ago she moved to her late home in Kingsbury, where she had since lived. Besides her daughter and---- the deceased is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Letty Craver, Mo--- Kansas and Mrs. J. Clarkson of Cedar Rapids IA. The funeral was from the Christian church in LaPorte at 1:30 Saturday afternoon, burial taking place in Greenwood Cemetery.

Kenneth James Raven, son of Mr. And Mrs. James Raven of 315 I street, who suffered a broken neck when he dived into three feet of water at the municipal beach on Stone lake yesterday afternoon passed away at 2:20 a.m. today. The youth would have observed his 20th birthday anniversary on Aug. 10. His death was the first tragedy of the season at the city beach. Complications, in addition to the broken vertebrae of the neck, brought about the young man's death. The injury to his neck paralyzed his entire body and bronchial pneumonia developed last night, brought on by the fact that his lungs had been filled with water. Although pneumonia was believed to have actually caused death early this morning, it is certain the other injury also would have been fatal. At the time of the accident, according to Dr. G. O. Larson, who attended him, he had almost drowned.
Dives in Shallow Water The accident that led to Kenneth's death happened about 3:30 p. m. yesterday. The youth was swimming with some friends, and he decided to dive from the pier and plunge through an inflated inner tube floating on the water. The water, according to witnesses, is only three feet deep at that point. As he plunged through the tube his head struck the bottom of the lake. After a lapse of several seconds, the friends who had watched him, another young man and a girl, saw his body rise to the surface, but his head remained under water. They became alarmed and lifted him entirely out of the water and carried him to the beach. Ronald Cummings, city life guard, immediately started artificial respiration, and a doctor and an ambulance were summoned, as well as police. After Cummings had continued artificial respiration for about a half hour, Kenneth regained consciousness. He was removed to his home in the O. M. Haverstock ambulance. His condition became worse during the evening. With his body paralyzed, he never recovered from the effects of the water in his lungs.
Former Paper Carrier - Kenneth was born in La Porte on Aug. 10, 1911, and had lived here all his life. Several years ago, as a boy, he delivered papers for the Herald-Argus and many La Porteans knew him through that connection. He was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are his parents; two brothers, Robert and Richard; one sister, Lauris; and his grandfather, Adam Raven. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the First Christian church. The Rev. M. G. Long will officiate and burial will be in the Baptist cemetery near Rolling Prairie, with L. A. Decker in charge. The body may be viewed at the L. A. Decker funeral home Saturday afternoon and until the time of the funeral.

Ray, Mrs. Henry - Mrs. Henry Ray, who came here last fall from Ohio, died of scrofula Friday, March 6th, 1896. Sunday afternoon brief but impressive services were held at her late home, conducted by Elde E. W. Davis. Interment in the Shippee cemetery. Deceased leaves a husband, one daughter and three sons.

Rechenberg - Lilli Rechenberg: LaPorte, Ind. - Lilli Rechenberg, 82, 915 "A" St., died at 7:45 a.m. yesterday at the Anderson Sanitarium after a long illness. She was born in Germany Dec. 22, 1862 the daughter of Ernest and Alwine Zieke Rechenberg. She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Rechenberg, La Porte, and a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and Garden Stud Club. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Otto E. Giese Funeral Home with Rev. M. E. Reinke officiating. Burial will be Pine Lake Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from tomorrow noon.

Daughter Elizabeth and Mother Alwine or Alwina evidently went back to Germany for a visit and returned to the states on August 23, 1907 on board the Kaiserin Augusta Victoria. Elizabeth worked as a domestic and then later as a teacher in Valparaiso, Indiana. She would become a German Language and a science (botbotanyeacher at Valparaiso, University. She also was quite well known and recognized in several local newspapers for beautifying the university. She died in March of 1969 and her sister Lillie died in 1966. Arnold b. 25 July 1884 died 18 December 1973. He had gone up to Wisconsin and married a Ida Malina ? WI born 23 Aug 1886 and she died in Illinois 18 April 1989. Anna, died August 20, 1934. Her obit states that she was born in Kottbus, Germany. She was buried in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana.

Reed, Alfred J. - The LaPorte Herald Argus, Monday, October 31, 1938, page 2 - - - Tree Kills Man - 59, of Rolling Prairie, rural route N. 2, was fatally hurt when a tree limb struck him as he and a companion were cutting down a tree. Reed and his brother-in-law, Schuyler Hooten, were cutting down a tree on the Halter farm, near Clear Lake in Wills Township, late Saturday afternoon when the tree fell sharply, striking Reed on the top of the head. Hooten tried to carry him from the woods but was unable to proceed very far and then went for help. The O.M. Haverstock ambulance crew responded to the call and with the aid of its cot was able to move Reed about 40 rods to the ambulance. At the Holy Family hospital where Reed was taken he was never fully conscious after the accident and died at 6 am today. Mr. Reed was born Feb. 11, 1879 in Wills Township, this county, the son of John and Elizabeth Reed. He had lived practically all his life in St. Joseph and LaPorte counties. By trade he was a carpenter. His wife, Rebecca Ann Hunt, died Oct. 19, 1909. Mr. Reed was a member of the Sauktown church. He is survived by a son, Virgil Reed, South Bend, and a stepson, Howard Reed Hunt, Los Angeles; two daughters, Mrs. Steven Tappan, LaPorte; Mrs. Howard Fern, Middleburg, Ind; two brothers, William Reed, LaPorte; Frank Reed, Rolling Prairie; five sisters, Mrs. Frank Schaffer, Mrs. Schuyler Hooten, Mrs. George Baer, Mrs. Anna Turley; all of Mill Creek, and Mrs. Fred Bennitt, Rolling Prairie, and seven grandchildren. One sister and one brother preceded him in death. Funeral Thursday--Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 at the Sauktown church near Mill Creek, the Rev. Mr. Rambo officiating. Burial will be in the Sauktown cemetery with O.M. Haverstock in charge. Dr. Daniel G. Berposke, county coroner, was to investigate the circumstances of the accident today.

Reed, Elizabeth Moriah (Wiltfong) - Herald Argus January 9, 1929 - - Mrs. Elizabeth Moriah Reed, age 79, of Wills township, died Tuesday morning. Mrs. Reed was born in May 1, 1849, in LaPorte County, living in this county all her life. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Wiltfong. On October 25, 1863, she was married to John Reed, who died October 9, 1922. She was a member of the Sauktown Christian church. Surviving are three sons, William Reed of LaPorte, Frank Reed of LaPorte, and Alfre Reed at home; six daughters, Mrs. Harriett Feathers of Stillwell, Mrs. Josephine Shaffer of Mill Creek, Mrs. Anna Turley of New Carlisle, Mrs. Mary Bear, Mrs. Ida Hooten, and Mrs. Nellie Bennet, all of Sauktown; five brothers, George Wiltfong of LaPorte, William Wiltfong of South Bend, Monroe Wiltfong of New Carlisle, and Joseph Wiltfong, and Louis Wiltfong of Mill Creek, and 46 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. A son, John H. Reed, preceded her in death July 9, 1926. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Sauktown church, the Rev. A.H. Kenna officiating. Reed, Polly Ellen Hastings - LaPorte Daily Herald Argus, Thurs, Sep 3, 1925, pg.2 - - Polly Reed, age 43, died at 7:40 am today at the Holy Family hospital. She was the wife of George Franklin Reed, 101 1-2 Bond Street, and was ill only a few weeks. Mrs. Reed was born in Wills Township on Nov. 28, 1881. She had lived in this county all her life. On Oct. 8, 1897, she became the wife of Mr. Reed. She was a member of the Christian church at Sauktown. She leaves her husband; two children, Hilda Eva Closson of LaPorte, and Ethel Inez Daly of Elkhart; her mother, Mrs. Alexander Hastings of Rolling Prairie; and the following brothers and sisters, James Hastings, Miss Nova Hastings and Mrs. Oscar Halter, all of Rolling Prairie; Mrs. J. Hicks of Michigan City, Mrs. John Fuller of Gary, Mrs. Firman Rouse of Laveres, Colo., and Mrs. William Hunt of Wills township. The funeral arrangements have not been completed, but it is known that burial will be at the Oak Grove cemetery. The undertaker is E.E. Ebbert.

Reed died at the home of her father, Alfred Hunt, in Wills township, at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon of tuberculosis. She was born April 20, 1884, and leaves a husband and four children, Virgil, Gladys, Howard and Leona, her father, mother and five brothers and three sisters, William, James, Chester, Benjamin and Charles, Mrs. Martha Schoff, Mrs. Grace Hastings and Miss Daisy Hunt. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Sauktown church, the cortege leaving the house at 1 o'clock. The burial will be at the Sauktown cemetery, with Weir & Seivert in charge.

REESE, ELMER – unknown La Porte newspaper, 28 November 1936 - - Elmer E. Reese, age 73, Rolling Prairie business man and one of the most prominent residents of that community, died suddenly at 2:15 a. m. yesterday at his home. Death resulted from a heart attack. Mr. Reese was a partner in the Reese & Brother Hardware store at Rolling Prairie and on Saturday was active in his usual pursuits at the store. His death came as a shock to the entire community. The son of Henry and Lucinda Reese, he was born at Bootjack, near Rolling Prairie, on July 7, 1863, and lived in that immediate vicinity all his life. In May 1889, in Rolling Prairie, he married Effie Powell, who preceded him in death in 1907. On January 27, 1909 in La Porte he married Fanny Evory, who survives. Other survivors are four brothers, William M., Joseph O., and Walter W. Reese, all of Rolling Prairie, and Charles M. Reese of La Porte. One brother preceded him in death. Mr. Reese started in the hardware business in 1885 at Rolling Prairie. In 1888 his brother, William, went into partnership with him and the firm was known as the Reese & Brother Hardware store since that time. Mr. Reese was a member of the Rolling Prairie Christian church and was superintendent of its Sunday school for 37 years. He also was an elder of the church for a number of years. Mr. Reese was secretary of the Rolling Prairie Cemetery association until the time of his death. Exactly three years prior to the date of his death on Nov. 22, 1933, Mr. Reese fell while putting eaves on a house and he never fully recovered from his injuries. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Rolling Prairie Christian church. The Rev. J. N. Thomas will officiate and burial will be in the Rolling Prairie cemetery with O. M. Haverstock of La Porte in charge. The body may be viewed at the home until the time of the services.

Replogle, John – Michigan City News, October 21, 1891 - Mr. John Replogle, residing near Rolling Prairie, died at his home, Monday forenoon. The deceased was about 72 years of age, and was for many years a resident of Laporte county. The cause of his death was a catarrhal affection of the stomach, with which he had been troubled a long time. He was confined to his bed, however, only about one week. An aged wife, at home, a son in this city and one daughter, Mrs. C. B. Hewitt, in South Bend, survive to mourn his death. Burial in Heeston Cemetery.

Kathryn Wiltfong Replogle: - The LaPorte Daily Herald Argus, Mon, Sept. 8, 1930, pg. 2 - - - Mrs. Kathryn Leslie Replogle, age 34, of Mill Creek died last evening at 9:30 at the Fairview hospital. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wiltfong, Mrs. Replogle was born in Mill Creek, Oct. 2, 1895, and lived there all her life. She was married in LaPorte on June 25, 1927, to Charles Replogle, who survives her. She was a member of the Women's Prayer and Service band of the Mill Creek Baptist church. Others surviving are a daughter, Yolanda, age 13; three brothers, Melvin, Russell and Clifford Wiltfong of Mill Creek; a sister, Mrs. Hazel Hefferman of Chicago, and the mother, Mrs. Clara E. Wiltfong of Mill Creek. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Standard time, at the Mill Creek Baptist church, the Rev. Mark L. Marshall of the LaPorte Presbyterian church, assisted by the Rev. Simpson of Mill Creek, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery with E.E. Ebert in charge. Reynolds, Anderson E -   The Daily Herald, Thursday, March 28, 1895 - Reynolds, Anderson E. - Marriage a Secret, After the Husband's Death the Wife Produces the Evidence - Mrs. Anderson E. Reynolds, of Westville has been a bride for a week. She is now a widow. To the world she has been an unmarried woman till she revealed the secret, yesterday, just before her husband was laid away in his grave. The seventeenth of this month Clerk Sallwasser issued to Mr. Reynolds a license to marry. His prospective bride, Sadie Brooks, was with him at the time. They proceeded to the home of Rev. G. F. Brayton, of Door Village, and that gentleman performed the ceremony very quietly. The newly wedded couple proceeded then to their homes and did not divulge their secret to any one, most probably on account of Mr. Reynolds' illness, as he was afflicted with inflammation of the bowels. Monday, of this week, Mr. Reynolds succumbed to the disease and life depar ted. Still his secret bride kept her secret. Preparations were made for the funeral and probably the secret would never have been known but in some round-about way a Westvillean became aware of the unannounced marriage. He investigated but could learn nothing. Finally he went direct to the girl and charged her with being the bride of the deceased. She then admitted the fact and produced the marriage license. It is a queer case and no one seems to be able to give a clear solution of the story. Both husband and wife were of good families and of such age that the consent of parents was not necessary. Mr. Reynolds was an engineer on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad but has been off duty for two years., on account of ill health. His remains were laid at rest in the Westville cemetery, yesterday afternoon, under Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias auspices. The funeral was the largest which has taken place in Westville in years.

REYNOLDS, CHARLES – La Porte Argus, 22 June 1882 - - Charles Reynolds, youngest son of Fleming Reynolds, of Wills Township, was drowned in Hudson Lake last Saturday. The lad was about 12 years old and was with some other parties rowing rapidly on the lake when the oar he was using broke and precipitated him in the water. Before his comrades could return to him he sank and drowned. The body was searched for by a larger number of men all night but was not recovered until Sunday noon. The funeral occurred Monday. Burial in Rolling Prairie Cemetery.

REYNOLDS, KITTY – La Porte Argus, 2 February 1888 - - -Miss Kitty Reynolds, daughter of Frank Reynolds, the Postal Clerk of this city, died at Mattoon, Illinois, last Monday morning She had gone to Mattoon on a visit to her grandmother and was sixteen years old. She had been a cripple since her infancy and was only able to move about in a wheel chair. Funeral services were held at the Episcopal church, Wednesday morning and the remains were taken to Rolling Prairie for burial.

Rhoda, Gertrude Mrs. - - Crawfordsville Journal Review 15-Dec-1966 p 14 - Waynetown -   Mrs. Gertrude C. Rhoda, 74, died late Sunday evening at the home of her son, Robert in VanNuys, Calif after an illness of four weeks. She had been active in WSCS and American Legion Auxiliary service in Van Nuys. She attended Jennings County, Ind schools. A native of North Vernon, Indiana, Mrs. Rhoda was born May 17, 1892 a daughter of Lyman and Angeline Neely. She married Joseph Rhoda July 5, 1922 in LaPorte. Surviving are three sons, Rev. Robert Rhoda, pastor of the Waynetown Methodist Church, Lewis Rhoda of Tico Rivera, Calif and Robert (sic - listed two Roberts); a daughter, Mrs. Gail Will of Michigan City; nine grandchldren, four great grandchildren; a brother, Clifford Neely of LaPorte and two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Tonn of LaPorte and Mrs. Roy Long of near Michigan City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Haberstock Funeral Home in LaPorte with Rev. Hilton Whitacker officiating. Burial in LaPorte Cemetery. Contributed by: Karen Zach.

Richards, C I. - 1905 obituary - - -C.I. Richards died Saturday at his home in Whiting where he has lived since 1863. He was 72 years old and is survived by the wife and three daughters: Mrs. Kirt Cowden of Erie, Pa., Mrs Hugh Atkin of Whiting, and Ora Richards of Whiting. Mrs. Richards was formerly Herritte Blackman of Hanna. The deceased clerked for a time before the war here in F.A. Freeman's store. He served through the Civil War and was a member of the band of the 87th Indiana Volunteers. Mr. Richards was the first agent on the P & F.W. Railroad at Hanna and while a resident there united with the Methodist church and became an active and devoted member. At one time he was landlord of the Anderson house in LaPorte and it was from there that he moved to Whiting. RITENAUR, Samuel W., - Michigan City Evening Dispatch 06 Sept 1938 - - - Samuel W. Rienaur, 79, 226 Spring Street, died 4:20 Monday morning at his home. Death followed an illness of ten months. The deceased was born in Francisville, IN, the son of David and Margaret (Cunningham) Ritenaur. He was married in Michigan City in 1888 to Cora Dudley who survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Fred Gulbert, and Edna Mae Ritenaur, both at 226 Spring Street, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Marian Benton, Michigan City, one grandchild, four brothers: William, Natahn and Bert Ritenaur, Burdick, IN and Benjamin Ritenaur, South Bend; two sisters: Mrs. George Frame of Michigan City, and Mrs. Rose Johnson of Florida. Three Children are deceased. Funeral Services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday in the Hummer mortuary with Rev. DC Ford Officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Hummer this evening and on Wednesday.

Rogers - Carl Rogers - 2-16-2001 - News Dispatch Michigan City, IN - LaPORTE — Carl T. Rogers, 83, died at 6:15 p.m. Monday (Feb. 19, 2001) at LaPorte Hospital. A private family service will be held at a later date. Cremation will take place, and burial of ashes will be in Springville Cemetery, LaPorte. There will be no visitation. Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Rogers was born July 4, 1917, in Franklin, Tenn., to Paul and Gertrude Hiche Rogers. On Aug. 19, 1973, in Crown Point, Ind., he married Lois Marshall, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Patsy Rogers and Judy Rogers, both of Nashville, Tenn., and Brenda Rogers, Michigan City; a son, Carl T. Rogers, Henager, Ala.; three stepsons, Ronald Atteberry, Hebron, Ind., Thomas Atteberry, Bullhead, Ariz., and Donald Atteberry, Branchland, W. Va.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers. Mr. Rogers had been a LaPorte resident since 1960, coming from Crown Point. He was a laborer, working out of Iron Workers Local 395 in Hammond. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Hammond, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

ROSENBAUM, EMIL F. - DIES AT AGE 87 Vidette Messenger Apr 20, 1952 HANNA, April 21. -- Emil F. Rosenbaum, residing on RFD #2, Union Mills, north o Hanna, died at 8 a.m. Sunday. He was 87 years of age. The decedent was born in Cass Township, LaPorte county, Jan. 13, 1865, a son of Gottlieb and Henrietta Rosenbaum. He was engaged in farming for many years. On Feb. 7, 1889, he married Sophia Dankert, who preceded him in death in 1922. He was a member of the Lutheran church at Hanna. Surviving are two sons, George and Franklin, and two daughters, Cora. A. And Goldie Rosenbaum, all at home; two brothers, Albert, Nanna and William Colorado, and one sister, Mrs. Amelia Rosenbaum, LaPorte. One son, Paul, died in 1943. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday at the family home, north of Hanna, and at Hanna Lutheran church. Rev. Rosenbaum, Emil F.   -  Michigan City News Dispatch -- 24 May 1939 Emil F. Rosenbaum LaCrosse, Ind., May 24. -- Funeral services for Emil F. Rosenbaum, 75, who died at 3 p.m., Monday, will be held at 2 (CST), Thursday in St. John's Lutheran church with Rev. Theodore Bartell officiating. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery in Wanatah. Mr. Rosenbaum had been seriously ill only three weeks but had been ailing for years. He was born Oct. 2, 1863, in Cass Twp, and had lived there his entire life. On May 7, 1895 he was married to Emiline Manthey. Rosenbaum, Emma (Manthey) - LaPorte Herald-Argus; 12 December 1950 - -Buried in St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Wanatah - - Funeral services for Mrs. Emeline Rosenbaum, 74, of five miles south of Wanatah, who died yesterday morning at her home, will be conducted at 1:30 Thursday at the Boehlke funeral home with the Rev. A.V. Kuster officiating. A second service will be held at the St. John's Lutheran church at Wanatah at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Mr. Kuster officiating. Friends may call the the Boehlke funeral home form 1 o'clock tomorrow until services Thursday. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran cemetery. Mrs. Rosenbaum, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Manthey, was born Dec. 7, 1876 in Cass township where she resided her entire life. On May 6, 1894 she married Emil E. Rosenbaum. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran church and the Lutheran's Ladies Aid society. Surviving are six sons, Otto, William, Fred, Edward, John and Clarence, all of route 2, Wanatah; three daughters, Mrs. Elsie Warner, Mrs. Honey Grieger and Miss Ida Rosenbaum, all of route 2, Wanatah; three brothers, Emil Manthey, route 2, Wanatah; Fred Manthey, South Bend; Henry Manthey, Hanna; three sisters, Mrs. Ida Rudolph, Valparaiso; Mrs. Ella Tessmer, South Bend and Mrs. Bertha Werner, Hanna.

ROSKIE, Paul, (Michigan City Evening Dispatch 25 Mar 1935) - - - After an illness of 11 months, Frank Roskie, 1011 W. Seventh St. died Sunday morning at his home. Death was attributed to complications. Mr. Roskie was born 19 July 1878 in LaPorte, but has lived in this city for 50 years. On Sept 19, 1905, he was married to Mary Pliske who survives him. Besides his wife, the deceased is survived by one son, Carl Roskie, and three daughters, Mrs. Paul Buell, Mrs. Stanley Jasniewski, and Miss Edna Roskie, all of this city. Three half sisters, Mrs. Michael Baunach and Mirs. Minnie Konkey of this city, Mrs. Andrew Rauchenberger of Hammond, and Joseph Schultz of Tampa Florida. Funeral services have been set for Wednesday at 9 from St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Edward Miller officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. MRS. MERCY ROWLEY - - Mrs. Mercy Rowley, a most esteemed woman of Springfield township, known far and wide throughout the northern part of the county, passed away at her home Saturday. She had been in poor health for several years. Mrs. Rowley was 72 years of age, and was born and reared on the farm where she died. She was the daughter of Sylvester and Katherine Griffin and was the wife of Austin Rowley, who survives her. The deceased leaves sons and daughters as follows: Charles Rowley of Wheeler and George of Woodstock, ILL., Mrs. ?ello of Chicago. Sisters and brothers are, Mrs. James Kissell of Stillwell, Mrs. George Rowley of LaPorte, Mrs. Hattie Goff of LaPorte, Charles Griffin of LaPorte. There are a number of grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rowley was a member of the Methodist Church. The funeral was held today and I believe the interment took place in Low Cemetery since her stone is there along with that of her husband (Austin) Note: the paper said...Pine Lake cemetery. Rumbaugh, Andrew Jackson - Andrew Jackson Rumbaugh, 88, of route 3, La Porte , died at 7:45 o'clock last night at the Fairview hospital. The son of James and Melissa Rumbaugh, he was born in Eldora , Ia. , on May 21, 1859, and had lived in LaPorte county nearly all his life. He was a retired farmer. On Nov. 18, 1880, in New Buffalo, he was married to Christine Engle, who died 10 years ago. Surviving are two sons, Roy and William Rumbaugh, both of LaPorte; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Ida Shippee, died in 1946. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Haverstock chapel with the Rev. M. E. Reinke officiating. Burial will be in Heston cemetery. Rumbaugh, Christina E. (Engle) - Mrs. Christina Engle Rumbaugh, 72, died at 7:30 this morning at the residence of her son, Roy Rumbaugh in Galena township. She was born in Porter county May 20, 1864, the daughter of John and Sophia Engle. She had lived in Galena township most of her life. On Nov. 18, 1880 she was united in marriage at New Buffalo, Mich., to Andrew J. Rumbaugh, who survives. Mrs. Rumbaugh was a member of the Springville Free Methodist church. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Roy and William Rumbaugh; one daughter, Mrs. Ida Shippee, Springfield township. Six grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. One brother, Martin Engle, preceded her in death. Short funeral services will be held at the E. E. Ebbert chapel at 1:45 Friday. There will be services at the Hesston church at 2:30 . Burial will be in the Hesston cemetery with E. E. Ebbert in charge. The body may be viewed at the chapel tomorrow and until time for the funeral. LaPorte, Apr 21, 1937

Rumbaugh, James - James Rumbaugh, of Springfield township, died Thursday afternoon at 3:20 at the age of almost 90 years, after an illness of five weeks, from the infirmities of old age. The decedent was born in Ohio on July 5, 1831 , but lived here for sixty years, being by occupation a farmer. He married Melissa Bailey in 1851, and was a member of the Christian church. He leaves five children, - Mrs. Mary Van Dusen, Mrs. Ida Woodward and A. J. Rumbaugh of Galena Township , Walter M. Rumbaugh, of Springfield Township . He also leaves two brothers, Albert Rumbaugh, of Springfield Township . He in Kansas , and also one sister, Mrs. Lucinda Nolton, in California . The funeral services will be held on Monday morning at 11 o'clock at the Histon (Hesston) Church, and interment will take place at the Histon (Hesston) Cemetery, with E. E. Ebbert in charge. Rumbaugh, John H. - John H. Rumbaugh, age 73, of Galena township, died Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Fairview hospital. He was born in Galena township on April 18, 1867 , the son of James and Melissa Bailey Rumbaugh, and had lived in LaPorte county all of his life. He was never married. Surviving are two brothers, A. J. Rumbaugh of Galena township and Walter Rumbaugh of Galien , Mich. ; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Hartman of rural route No 3, LaPorte and Mrs. Mary Van Dusen of Michigan City and a number of nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Ebbert and Giese funeral home. The Rev. Clayton H. Wilson will officiate and burial will be in the Hesston cemetery. Rumbaugh, Melissa (Bailey) - Mrs. James Rumbaugh, for many years a resident of this county, died at 11:30 last evening at her home in Springfield township after an illness of three or four years with paralysis. Mrs. Rumbaugh was 86 years, 5 months and 22 days old and was born in Ohio , and had lived in this county since her marriage to James Rumbaugh. She was a member of the Christian church and a good wife and mother. Besides the husband, she leaves four sons, Walter, Andrew, Hamilton and John, and two daughters, Mrs. Mary VanDusen and Ida Woodward, all of this county or vicinity.
