Levi Paddock settled within the limits of the township before 1840. He was a man of great physical strength and was supervisor of New Buffalo township in 1844. PAGELS, HENRY - Michigan City News DEATH CLAIMED HENRY PAGELS Well Know Farmer Found Dead in Bed This Morning Henry Pagels, 56, well known farmer, died unexpectedly during the night at his home, three miles south of Waterford. So far as Mrs. Pagels knew, her husband had not complained of illness. He was in this city during the day yesterday and returned home in his usual spirits. He retired about 10 o'clock. Mrs. Pagels was unable to arouse him this morning and upon closer investigation was startled to find him dead. Death is believed due to heart disease. The deceased is survived by his wife, four children, three brothers and one sister. Threee of the children reside at home, and the other is Mrs. Chris Schultz, residing east of Roeskeville. The brothes are John and Fred, residing south of Waterford; Charles Pagels, residing at the intersection of Coolspring avenue with the Waterford road, and Mrs. David Laughlin, of this city. Burial will be in Lowe Cemetery. Coroner F. R. Leeds was notified of the death this moring and will conduct an inquest. Submitted by: Laura J. Heckman

MRS. HENRY PAGELS - - Michigan City News Monday Feb. 2, 1920 - Mrs. Henry Pagels ( May), residing near Waterford, died Sunday morning from pulmonary tuberculosis, with which she had been ailing for the past five years. Influenza developed, hastening the end. The deceased was born July 15, 1874, in New York state. Her husband died some time ago. Burial will take place at Midway in Low cemetery. Pagels, Mabel - From Michigan City News, Wednesday 20 January 1909 - Gleason Station - Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Sibbrell, were guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. George Blessing. Miss Viola Luchtman spent last week with her aunt Mr. L. H. Vosburgh, in Michigan City . Misses Marjorie Witte and Lydia Goltze of the city, visited with the former’s sister, Mrs. George Luchtman last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Julius Wagoner and children spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Nick Bukowski and with Mrs. Wagoner’s mother, Mrs. Gorski. George Clough attended the stockholders and Portage Home Telephone company’s meeting, which was held at McCool last Saturday. George represented the local stockholders. Mabel, the nine months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pagels died last Friday night of tonsillitis. It was one of the twins. The boy twin is living. The funeral was held Monday at 1 o’clock from the family home. Rev. H. C. Wickemeyer, of St. Paul’s church of Michigan City, conducted the services. The little one was buried in Lowe’s cemetery. George Clough, teacher at the Highland School dismissed school Monday afternoon out of respect to the parents of the dead child.

Mrs. Julia Ann Palen - Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus December 21, 1943 - Mrs. Julia Ann Palen, 68, of 406 Planett Street, died at 1:05 this morning at the Fairview hospital following an illness of three years. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Hay. She was born in Donaldson, Indiana on April 28, 1875 and had lived all her life in Starke and LaPorte counties. On July 15, 1896 at Union Mills, she was married to Arthur Palen who died in 1938. She was a member of the Pentecostal church. Surviving are four sons, Charles, South Bend; John, Roland, and George all of LaPorte; five daughters, Mrs. Charles Allsup, Valparaiso; Mrs. Ora Young, LaPorte; Mrs. Anna Thomas, Mrs. Clara Slater, Mrs. Mildred Bunch, all of LaPorte; 29 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Hay, LaPorte, and Charles Hay of Dodd City, Kansas. One daughter and one son, three sisters, and four brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Haverstock chapel with the Rev. James M. Rice of Logansport officiating. Burial will be in Patton cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel until time of funeral.

SCIPIO TOWNSHIP — Elmore Pattee, 100, Scipio Township, died at 2:05 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) at his home. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Monday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Dr. Larry Houseman officiating. Burial is in Door Village Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Pattee was born June 4, 1898, in Scipio Township to James and Josephine Zink Pattee. Surviving are special relatives and caregivers, Karen and Bill Fabisiak, North Freedom, Wis. Mr. Pattee was a retired farmer. His farm is believed to be the only one in Scipio Township still in the name of the original owner from 1833. Mr. Pattee was a member of the Door Village United Methodist Church and also attended the Banks and Door Village schools. Memorials may be made to the LaPorte County Council on the Aging. Frank Sofranko Jr. Frank J. Sofranko Jr., 51, Michigan City, died at 3:52 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 14, 1998) at St. Mary Medical Center, Hobart, Ind. Paulis, HENRY JOHN - LaPorte Herald-Argus 17 February 1928 - "Henry John Paulis, age 66, of 309 Grove Street, died at 10:48 last night after an illness of three weeks. The son of Mr. And Mrs. John Paulis, the deceased man was born in LaPorte on March 4, 1861, and lived here all his life. On Sept. 16, 1883, he married Cora A. Bement in New Buffalo, Mich. He was member of the First Christian church and the K.O.T.M. During the war he was a member of the home guards. Mr. Paulis is survived by his widow; two sons, Bert and Russell Paulis, both of LaPorte; four daughters, Mrs. Earl Crowe and Mrs. Louise Wrase of LaPorte (should be sister not daughter) and Mrs. Roy Fuller and Miss Nettie Paulis of Detroit. Five grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon. The Rev. M. G. Long will officiate. PAULIS, JOHN - LaPorte Herald-Argus, June 4, 1906 - Passed Away at Ripe Old Age Last Night
  "The death of John Paulis occurred last evening at 5 o'clock, the cause of death being cancer. He was born in Germany 80 years ago and had resided in this city for the last fifty years. He leaves three children, Mrs. Louisa Wrase and Henry Paulis, of this city, and John Paulis, of South Bend, two sisters, one residing in Germany and the other in South Bend, 19 grandchildren and two great grand-children. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran church. The remains were taken to the home of Mrs. Wrase, 206 Madison Street, where funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Rev. Paul Eickstaedt will officiate, and the burial will be at the St. John’s Lutheran cemetery. Weir and Sievert are the funeral directors

  Niles, Mich - Mrs. Hazel Belle Payne, 83, of 110 Phoenix St., died at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, at Pawating Hospital, after a five-week illness. 
  She was born April 20, 1895, in Baroda, Mich. 
  Aug 17, 1914, in LaPorte, she was married to Burt W. Foster, who died Sept. 20, 1960. 
  In February of 1962, in St. Joseph, Mich., she was married to William Leroy Payne, who died October 1966. 
  Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Olive Hughes, Edwardsburg, Mich; three sons, Lowell Foster, Niles; Roy Foster, Galien, Mich., and Glen Foster, Michigan City; six stepchildren, three stepdaughters, Mrs. Dorothy Myers, Buchanan, Mich.; Mrs. Margaret Murdock, Stevensville, Mich; and Mrs. Louise Andres, Edwardsburg; and three stepsons, Albert and Ted Payne, Galien, Mich., and Robert Payne, Angleton, Tex.; three sisters, Mrs. Sylvia Toland, Niles Mich.; Mrs. Beryl Sassaman and Mrs. Arlene Smith, both of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and one brother, Marion Brown, Charleston, W. Va.; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. James Thurston, died earlier this year. 
  Funeral services will be at l:20 p.m. (EDT), Tuesday at the Pifer Chapel, of the Swem-Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Younts officiating. Burial will be in Foster Cemetery, Rolling Prairie,. Friends may call today at the funeral home.

PEASE, MARTHA – Unknown newspaper, January 1876 - Mrs. Martha Pease, wife of Asa P. Pease, was born Jan. 10, 1807, and died Jan. 28, 1876, thus reaching the well rounded age of 69 years. Bristol county, Mass., was her birthplace; her earlier years were spent in Courtland county, New York. In 1836 she removed to La Porte county, Indiana, where she has since resided. Mrs. Pease was married to her now bereaved husband, Dec. 21, 1837. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, four sons and many other relatives, among whom are three granddaughters and one grandson. At an early age she united with the Baptist church, and subsequently in 1863, she united with the M. E. church at Rolling Prairie. Her departure was without a struggle. Like the deepening of the morning twilight she seemed to “languish into life”. The funeral services, conducted by the Pastor of the M. E. church, were attended by the largest concourse of people that has assembled here for a long time. “Friend after friend departs, Who has not lost a friend? There is no union here of hearts, That finds not here an end.”

Peck, Charles - Michigan City News, Wed. 16 June 1909, p. 5, c.6 - -Friday, June 11, Charles Peck, a native of Michigan City, died Thursday evening at the county house, near Laporte. Death resulted from quick consumption. Charles Main Peck was 40 years old Feb. 17, last and was the son of Sylvester and the late Mrs. Peck. The mother was buried here two months ago. A few years ago his right foot was amputated as the result of a railroad accident at Logansport. He was awarded $15,000 damages by the Cass county court. The railway company appealed the case to the supreme court and it is said that he was given $4,000 damages. The case is still unsettled.
  He is survived by his father, Sylvester Peck, aged 80 years, who is making his home with a daughter, Mrs. Dilla Vatcher, in Austin, Ill., and the following brothers and sisters: Titus Peck, this city, Mrs. Dilla Vatcher and Mrs. Emily Vatcher of Austin, Ill., Mrs. Mabel Wagner, Terre Haute; Marshall Peck, who is connect with Armour & Co, in Newport News, Va., Mrs. Stella BeCraft, Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Alice Knight of California.
  The remains were brought to this city this afternoon and prepared for burial in the Earl morgue. Services in charge of Rev. C. A. Hobbs, were held at 5 o'clock this afternoon from the Earl morgue. Interment took place in Greenwood cemetery.

Pedro or Petro, Sarah (Cole) – Nov 1903 - Further investigation resulted in my finding her death date as 9 Nov 1903 in Logansport, Cass, IN. She had been in the asylum there. The Old Settlers of this community attended the last sad rites of Mrs. Sarah Pedro, who died at the asylum at Logansport, IN, last week, and the remains were brought to the home of her brother Henry P. Cole at Westville, where the funeral services were held Thursday by Rev. Smock, the resident minister of that place. The house was crowded while many stood out of doors. Her sudden death was a surprise to the community. It was a sad funeral. One could not realize to look at that troubled care-worn face that it was the same bright, cheerful, hopeful young lady that was born in the beautiful farm home Van Wilkin son now owns. Her parents being well-to-do pioneers of this county raised her in luxury without a care. Her first husband, Daniel Jessup, was married to her the same day Mr. J's sister, Calista Jessup, was married to Oscar James Bruner.
[**1] All have crossed the dark valley except Mr. J., who lives in Iowa near his three daughters, Laura, Clara, and Edith. Albert, the only child of the second
[**2] union has been with Dr. Hollenbeck for several years, and is a graduate from the Westville High School. Two children of the last are Harry Pedro, a rising young man and a member of the church, living at Chicago Heights, and Della, whom her great-uncle, W. Rich, a wealthy farmer who lives near Chesterton, took to raise when her mother went away. This is the first death in the family of children and Mrs. Pedro was the youngest at 56 years old. All live in this county except Elsworth, who formerly owned the H. Martin farm, but now lives in Republic, Ohio, Henry P. Cole at Westville, Mrs. Eliza Baird and Albert Cole near Dewey. Mrs. Pedro was laid to rest in the Westville cemetery. Mr. Bunda, Andrew Young, Mr. Hilton, David McKellips, Daniel Hubbard and Charley Cole acted as pallbearers. ** Additional notes from Linda Jones - I have found in the 1880 census for New Durham Twp a listing for Sarah C. and Sam'l W. Conquist and her daughter Eda M. Jessup. So this blows away the assumption that Sarah was only married twice. Albert listed in the obit is the son of Sam'l [Samuel] Conquist, Sarah's second husband.

Peo, Albert - July 5, 1956 - - Albert Peo, 71, R.R. 1, Box 213, died at his home at 8:45 p.m. yesterday (July 4, 1956). He had been in failing health for the past three years. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Springville Free Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Donoghue officiating. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hummer-White Mortuary tomorrow evening and Saturday until 10:30 a.m., when the body will be taken to the church where it may be viewed until the hour of the service. Mr. Peo was born March 12, 1885, in Michigan City, the son of William and Marie Prussing Peo. On Feb. 26, (1893?) (clipping hard to read) in Springfield Twp., he was married to Laura Hileman, who preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons -- Robert and Gerald, both of this city; five daughters -- Mrs. Blanche Donoghue, Mrs. Mabel Wallis, Mrs. Gertrude Swiger, Mrs. Joyce Watts and Mrs. Lesley Dingman, all of this city; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Harvey Hileman, this city; two brothers -- Charles and Louis, both of this city, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Hileman attended the Springville Free Methodist Church.

Peo, Mrs. Antonia - May 22, 1948 - Mrs. Antonia Karwick Peo, 42, who was born in Germany Jan. 23, 1906, died in St. Anthony Hospital today after a long illness. The daughter of Peter and Stella Karwick, she married Walter E. Peo here June 19, 1926. Mr. Peo survives as do a daughter, Mrs. Roger Miller, this city, and a son, Walter E. Peo, Jr., at home. Also surviving are two brothers and a sister. They are: Joseph and Casmir Karwick, this city; Mrs. Wanda Wold, Chicago. The deceased was affiliated with St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church. Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Hummer mortuary, with Rev. A. P. Hardt presiding. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery will follow. Friends may call at Hummer mortuary Monday evening and Tuesday.

He was born in Michigan City, Ind. on July 27, 1909 and had been employed at the Sprague Devices. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. E. L. Ernhart, Kingsbury, Mrs. F. A. Phillips, LaPorte, and Miss Vera June Peo at home; two brothers, Lester, South Bend and Richard, this city. Funeral services will be held at 2 Friday afternoon at the Hummer Mortuary with Rev. A. P. Mr. Peo died at 4 a.m. yesterday (Nov. 2, 1987) at his home. The Rev. Alfred Dettmer will officiate. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and until 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Mr. Peo was born May 4, 1914, in Michigan City, the son of Edward and Mary F. (Niespodziany) Peo. Surviving are his mother, Mary F. Peo, Michigan City; a brother, Carl Peo, Michigan City; a niece, Barbara Brandon, Michigan City; two nephews, Carl James, Terre Haute, Ind., and Steven Douglass, Michigan City; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. A sister, Margaret Jakelski, is deceased. Mr. Peo was a retired estimator from Pullman-Standard, retiring in 1976 with 40 years of service. He was a member of Queen of All Saints Church and Pullman-Standard Management Club. Peo, Edward A - EDWARD A. PEO, Died 26 May 1962 Edward A. Peo, 69, 200 Robin Tr., Trail Creek, died at St. Anthony Hospital at 6:30 p.m. yesterday, after an illness of three months. A lifetime resident of the Michigan City area, he was a retired general foreman for Pullman-Standard. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Carlisle Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul H. Frankenfeld, pastor of the St. John’s United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from tomorrow afternoon until the time of the services. Mr. Peo was born Oct. 22, 1892, in Michigan City, the son of Ernest Peo and the former Emma Dubert. He was married Feb. 14, 1924, in Michigan City to the former Ruby (Weber) Koepke, who survives. Other survivors include four sons – Clarence Peo, Carl Peo, Ray Koepke and Harvey Koepke; two daughters, Mrs. Edward (Margaret Peo) Jakelski, and Marjorie Koepke; two brothers, Walter Peo and Ernest Peo; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Florence Peo) Tonn, and Mrs. Arthur (Mabel Peo) Ziesmer; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. All the survivors are Michigan City residents. Mr. Peo was affiliated with the St. John’s United Church of Christ, the Elks Lodge 432, Eagles Lodge 1228, the VFW Father’s Auxiliary, and the Pullman Management Club. Ernest J. W. Peo died Sunday at his late home, 1919 Wabash Street, after an illness of several months. His death was due to heart trouble, he having been confined to his bed for six weeks. The deceased was born in New Buffalo, Mich. in Dec.1868 and came to Michigan City,HENRY C. PEO, Died 09 July 1940. Word was received in Michigan City, 15 July. Received word of Henry Peo’s death. Word was received in Michigan City today of the death of Henry C. Peo, 72, former local resident, who died July 9 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where he had been making his home since 1923. Mr. Peo was born April 13, 1869, in LaPorte but was reared in Michigan City. He is survived by his widow, Mary Ann Fitzgerald, and three sons, Victor of Oakland, Calif., Lester, LaPorte, and Henry C. Peo, Jr., Montreal. Ind. 18 years ago. He was an employee of the car works and was well and favorably known by a large circle of friends. He is survived by his wife, Emma (Dubert) Peo and seven children, his father, two sisters and one brother. The children are Florence, Eddie, Mabel, Pearl, Walter, Romeo and Ernst Peo, all residing at home. The sisters are Mrs. Lena Artus of New Buffalo and Mrs. Mary Pirrung of Chicago.
The deceased’s father, Ernst Peo, aged 78 years, resides in New Buffalo and the brother, Martin Peo, is a resident of Stillwell. The deceased was a member of St. John’s Aid Society and the funeral will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon from St. John’s Church, Rev. Paul Irion officiating. Peo, Katherine   - KATHERINE (LAGEMANN) PEO,  Died 09 Dec 1948   Katherine Bertha Peo, 55, R.R. 1, Box 68, Michigan City, Ind., died at 11 a.m. Wednesday in her home following a heart attack. Pallbearers will be Richard Peo, Herbert Jones, Bill Neumann, Roger Lagemann, Henry Smith and Howard Hileman. Mrs. Peo was born Jan. 26, 1893, in this city, the daughter of John and Emma (Fanter) Lagemann. On Dec. 18, 1919, in this city, she was married to Louis C. Peo, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Irvin Peo, two daughters – Mrs. Mary Jayne Cordray and Mrs. Catherine Ginther, all of this city; three grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. George Steindrager, and a brother Herbert Lagemann, also of this city. Three children preceded her in death.

Mrs. Laura (Hileman) Peo, 54, well-known resident of Springfield Twp., died at 6 this morning at her home following a short illness. Mrs. Peo, a member of the Free Methodist Church at Springville, was born in Springfield Twp. Oct. 8, 1888, the daughter of Levi and Carrie B. (McNeal) Hileman. On Feb. 26, 1908, she was married to Albert Peo, who survives. Other survivors are two sons, Robert L. Peo, Camp Beale, Calif., and Gerald Peo, at home; five daughters, Miss Blanche Peo and Mrs. Lawrence (Gertrude Bell) Swiger, at home, Mrs. DeForest (Mabel Irene) Wallis, Evansville, and Miss Joyce Peo and Mrs. Lowell (Lesley Mae) Dingman of Michigan City; and two brothers, Harvey Hileman, Plymouth, and Charles Hileman, Springfield Twp. Funeral services will be held at 2 Wednesday afternoon from the Hummer Mortuary, Rev. Walter VanderLinden of Springville officiating. Burial will be in the Springville Cemetery. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. from the family residence. Rev. Mr. Mueller, pastor of the German M. E. Church, will conduct the services.

PEO, RHODA -   MRS. RHODA PEO, Died 10 Dec 1891 Mrs. Rhoda Peo died December 10th, 1891, at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Mary A. Schoff, in Union Township, of consumption. The funeral was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Tracy M.E. Church and the remains were interred in the German Lutheran Cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. S. E. Smith of Union Mills, Ind. Deceased was born in Union Township, LaPorte County, August 12, 1870 and was married to Henry C. Peo, Jr., of Michigan City, August 12, 1889, and had resided in this city until about October 1st, when she returned sick to her mother’s home and gradually grew worse until death came to her release. She leaves a husband and one child, a son, aged 18 months to mourn her loss.
MRS. H. C. (RHODA D. SCHOFE OR SCHOFF) PEO, Died 10 Dec 1891, Buried 17 Dec. Mrs. Henry C. (Rhoda D. Schoff) Peo died Thursday at the home of her parents in Tracy, Ind., after an illness of eleven weeks. Consumption was the cause. Mr. Peo and an 18 months-old son survive. Mr. Peo drove to Tracy, a distance, of 25 miles, that night. He had been there the Sunday before, and then thought his wife was improving. The funeral was held at Tracy from the Lutheran Church Sunday, and the sermon was preached by Rev. L. Smith, of Union Mills, Ind.

Peo, Robert. - OBITUARY 1 CPL. ROBERT PEO, Lost In Action, 11 Aug 1944. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Peo, Liberty Trail, have received word from the War Department that their son, Cpl. Robert Peo, has been missing in action over Austria since July 25, 1944. He has been in the Army Air Corps since February, 1943, taking his basic training at St. Petersburg, Fla. He was later sent to Fresno, Calif., and then to San Francisco. Since February he has been stationed in Italy. Recently he was transferred from the signal corps to a bombing squadron, serving as a radio operator. Before entering the service he was employed at the Sullivan Machinery Co.
OBITUARY 2 SGT ROBERT PEO, Killed in Action 24, July 1944 Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo., for the late Sgt. Robert Peo who was killed in action July 24, 1944. Because of the manner in which he met his death, his remains and those of seven comrades could not be identified individually, therefore a mass burial was conducted. Appropriate military honors and religious services were provided at the graveside by military personnel. Those attending the funeral were Walter Peo, Walter Peo, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Roger Miller and Mrs. Ella Kneller, all of Michigan City, and Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Wold, Chicago. Members of the families of the other victims, who were from various states, also attended.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Carlisle Funeral Home with Rev. Paul H. Frankenfeld officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from tomorrow afternoon. A lifelong resident of the city, Mrs. Peo was born here Nov. 7, 1898, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Weber. On Feb. 14 1942, she was married here to Edward A. Peo, who died May 25, 1962. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, the Women’s Guild of the church, Mothers of World War II, Gold Star Mothers and Vivians. Surviving are a daughter, Marjorie Eisele, Temperance, Mich., two sons, Ray C. Koepke and Harvey Koepke, both of this city; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Reatha Kunkel and Myrtle Schoppel, both of Wanatah, and Ethel Stowers, Wheeler, and a brother, Jerome Weber, Wanatah.

Peo, William - - WILLIAM PEO, Died 20 Apr 1904 William Peo, a well known resident of Springfield Township, died of paralysis April 20th after an illness of several days. He was seventy-two years old and leaves a widow and eleven children, most of whom are Springfield Township residents. The brothers and sisters of Mr. Peo who survive him are H. Chris Peo of Chicago, Charles Peo of LaPorte, Mrs. Fred (Mary) Walter of New Buffalo, Mich. John and Ernest Peo of New Buffalo and Mrs. Fred (Caroline) Brinkman of Michigan City, Ind. The funeral services were held at 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon from the Springville Church. The services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Houston, pastor of the Springville Church, and the Rev. Mr. Loeppert, pastor of the German Methodist Church in LaPorte. The former delivered a sermon in English, and the latter spoke in German. A larger attendance at a funeral was never before witnessed in Springfield Township. It is probable that the number exceeded five hundred, and the funeral cortege was a mile long. Relative and friends of the deceased were there from Chicago, LaPorte, Grand Rapids, New Buffalo and Michigan City.

Her body is being brought to Three Oaks, where funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the H.B. Connelly Funeral Home. Rev. W.A. Pershbacher, Methodist church pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Foster cemetery, south of Three Oaks. Mrs. Pigeon is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Fred Smith, Rolling Prairie, and Mrs. Blanche Stroud, Gary, and two brothers, Roy Foster, Benton Harbor, and Bert Foster, Galien.

PIERCE, ALLAN – The La Porte Herald, 4 May 1901 - Allan Pierce of Byron, an old soldier was found at 6 o’clock this morning lying on the ground near his home. His sister, Mrs. Diamond, with whom he resided, discovered him. He tried to rise but was unable to do so, having, been stricken with apoplexy. Friends assisted him into the house, where he lived only an hour. He was in the act of taking a walk before breakfast when attacked. Comrade Pierce was born at Hamburg, N. Y. April 11, 1833, and came to this county 44 years ago, and was in his 69th year at time of his death. He served throughout the civil war, having enlisted in Co. B, Ninth Indiana volunteers, afterward, veteranizing. His comrades testify to his being a good soldier. He was injured by the explosion of a shell, and was a pensioner. A wife and two children preceded him to the spirit land. Deceased was beloved by all that knew him. He was a member of Hathaway Post, Rolling Prairie. Funeral Monday at 10 a. m. at the Rolling Prairie Methodist Episcopal Church. Burial in Rolling Prairie Cemetery.

Piest, John - Herald Argus Monday, July 11, 1927 - DIES AT HOME - JOHN PIEST - John Piest, aged 77 years, 8 months and 9 days, passed away at 9:30 this morning at his home at 416 A. Street.
  Mr. Piest was born Nov 2, 1849 in Germany, where he married in 1875. Forty-five years ago he moved to LaPorte, where he has lived ever since. Twelve children, two of who died in infancy, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Piest. He is survived by his widow Minnie Piest, the following children; Albert and Ben of Chicago, Herman, William, Johhn and Carl of LaPorte, Otto of California, Mr. Louise McGregor of Chicago; Mrs. Linda Lloyd of California, Mrs. Rose Arnold of Chicago, 14 grandchildren, and one brother who lives in Germany. Piest, 3 children  La Porte Daily Herald - Friday, September 10, 1897 - Three in an open grave. One family sustains a pitiable loss - triple funeral is held. - Undertakers Henry & Sievert laid the bodies of three children in one grave last night in the Lutheran cemetery. The little ones were the children of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Piest, of 706 C street, they being: Louis, aged 8, Mary, aged 5 and August, aged 3. Death came to all yesterday afternoon, diphtheria being the cause. There is still one more child in this family who is a victim of the disease. This morning, it was thought the little one was some better. Health Officer Darling says no more cases of diphtheria have been reported and those now afflicted show every indication of improvement.
   Additional Researcher Notes: Fred Piest and Wilhelmina Schramm were married September 9, 1888. The 1900 Census records show them still living on C Street in LaPorte with surviving children: Albert, born May 1888; Eddie, Sep 1890; Minnie, Nov 1896; Fred, May 1899 and daughter (Mata?), Feb 1900.

Pike, Ruth Mrs. -    Salem Cemetery:  Mrs Ruth Pike, one of the oldest residents of LaPorte county, died at her home in Pleasant township, Sunday, Aug. 23d, at the ripe old age of 90 years, 1 month and 13 days.  The funeral will be held at the late residence, half a mile south of Salem chapel at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 25.  Burial at Salem.  Services by the Rev. A. Fetzer.

Plagemann, Mrs. Johanna - Nonagenarian of County Is Dead - Mrs. Johanna Plagemann, 94, to be Buried Tuesday (died 3-6-1936)
  LaPorte county lost one of the Nonagenarian yesterday when Mrs. Johanna Plagemann, age 94, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Moon, rural route 1, Michigan City, after an illness of five weeks.
  Mrs. Plagemann was 94 years old on Feb 8. The daughter of Ferdinand and Henrietta Poilex, she was born in Pommern, Germany, on Feb 8, 1842. She had lived in this county 20 years, moving here from Hammond.
  In 1875 in Berlin, Germany, she was married to Fred Plagemann. They came to the United States seven years later and for four years they lived in Myersdale, Pa. In 1886 they moved to Hammond.
  Surviving are two sons, Otto Poilex of Hammond, a son by her first marriage and F. A. Plageman of Norfolk Va., a retired naval officer; one daughter, Mrs. William Moon of route 1, Michigan City; nine grandchildren and 22 great granchildren.
  Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon. At 1:30 service will take place at the daughter's home, followed at 2 o'clock with services at the Springville church. The Rev. Frank Calkina will officiate and burial will be in Sprinville cemetery with O. M. Haverstock in charge.    Issac G. Pollard, a civil war veteran, who had attained the age of 78 years, died from the infirmities of age at his late residence 9324 Yates avenue, South Chicago, Monday, July 12th, at 5 P.M., following an illness of about four weeks.
He was born in Newton Co, MO April 21 1848 and was for many years a minister. In late years however, he retired from pastoral duties. In 1882 he was married to Louisa A. Freeman in Little Rock ARK, and besides his widow he is survived by three daughters and eight sons, who are Mrs Lillian L. Housman, this city; Mrs Francis L. Miller South Chicago; Mrs Sarah A. Paris St Louis, MO; Isaac H. Pollard New Castle, PA; Jesse F. Pollard Texas; Elmer B. Pollard address unknown; Amos H. Pollard Hamilton IND., and Clinton A. Pollard Gary. Another daughter, Mrs Gertrude M. Jenkins preceded her father in death some years ago. Mrs Mary E. Reed of Sasakwa, OK, a sister and Jesse C. Johnson of Detroit a Half Brother, also survive. There are 23 Great Grandchildren and six Grand Children. Mr Pollard was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of this city and for years a member of the William H. Calkins post, GAR., Hammond Indiana. He enlisted from Washington County Arkansas, Oct 10 1863, and was mustered into the United States Army at Cassville MO. He served three years during the civil war in Company L 2nd regiment, Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry, under command of Captain William Bowling and Colonel John E. Phelps. He received his promotion to the rank of corporal Jan 26 1865. At the close of the war he was discharged honorably, receiving his discharge papers on Aug 20 1865 after serving in a most active and strenuous capacity. Mr Pollard was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father, and a man who preferred such deeds and kindness as made for him innumerable friends. He was a man of strong integrity, fair business dealings and possessed a character outstanding among the rest.

A short prayer service will be held from the home of J.H. Pollard 1013 Elston Street, Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, followed by funeral services at the First M.E. church at 2 o'clock, conducted by the REV. Frank O. Fraley, the pastor, and REV. D.C. Ford pastor of the First Christian church. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may view the remains at any time at 1013 Elston Street

Gayle Ponda, 62, of Union Mills, formerly of Chesterton, passed away Friday, April 11, 2014, at home.
She was born Feb. 26, 1952, in Guntersville, Ala., to Bill and Idell (Atchley) Gibson. She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years Robert Ponda Sr.; her sons Robert Ponda Jr. and Vincent (Michelle) Ponda; and her daughter Tracy Cady. Surviving also are her grandchildren Robert Ponda III, Joey Ponda, Nicholas Ponda, Marguerite Ponda, Nathan and Matthew Cady and Elizabeth (Matt) Richter; her brother Mickey Gibson; and many brother- and sisters-in-law. Gayle has many wonderful nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.  Preceding her in death are her parents, her sisters Ida Sue Westmoreland and Patty Stevens, and her brother Billy Wayne Gibson.  Gayle loved Jesus with her heart and soul. Among many things, she was a master gardener, devoting a lot of time to her yard and garden. She enjoyed fishing, cooking and loved watching her grandchildren play baseball. She was a loving wife and mother to her family; and a very proud Mamaw.  Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Newhard Funeral Home, 58 W. Porter, George  - 11 June 1951 edition of the Michigan City, IN News Dispatch - - Geo. Porter Dies in Night Auto Mishap - Smashes Big Car Into Ditch Culvert North of LaCrosse
    George Howard Porter, 58, widely-known former owner of several local taverns, died instantly last night when he smashed his 1950 Cadillac squarely into a ditch culvert on Ind. 43 a quarter mile north of LaCrosse.
Dies Instantly the accident occurred on a straight, flat stretch of highway at 9:50 p.m. Coroner Russell Beck said Porter, alone in the car died instantly of severe head injuries, a crushed chest and other wounds. Trooper Richard Copeland said the accident was a simple collision. Several witnesses told the trooper that Porter passed them going between 80 and 85 mph. Marks on the shoulder indicated that Porter's big car slipped off the right side of the pavement as he pulled back in line. He straddled the edge of the pavement for nearly 50 yards before running directly into the two-foot culvert over a drainage ditch. The wreckage did not swing either way but lodged against the concrete. The front of the demolished auto was pushed back into the driver's seat and the steering wheel rammed partly through the top. Trooper Copeland said he believed Porter was being careful about regaining the highway and failed to see the culvert near the edge of the pavement.
  On Business Trip The body was taken to the Kosanke funeral home in Kouts but was brought here this morning. Porter, former owner of the "Michigan Inn", recently completed construction of the Skyway Hotel court at U.S. 20 and Johnson Rd. His wife said he was returning from an Indianapolis business trip when the mishap occurred. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ott funeral chapel with Rev. D. C. Ford presiding. Burial will follow in the World War I circle at Greenwood cemetery. Friends may visit the chapel beginning tomorrow afternoon. The deceased, who had lived here since 1924, was born in Mt. Vernon, Ill., Sept. 30, 1892. In 1931 he married Clara H. Hellwig here. She survives, also a daughter, Mrs. David R. Craig, Xenia, O., and three grandsons. Two brothers preceded him in death. A Navy veteran of World War I, he was a member of the John Franklin Miller American Legion Post 37, which will conduct military rites at the cemetery.

Mr. Prosser was born in Laporte County Dec. 25, 1890. On Dec. 13, 1913, he was married in Michigan City to Millie Lambert, who survives. He died on their wedding anniversary. Prosser, Susan - Michigan City News, 20 June 1900 The funeral of Mrs. Susan Prosser was held Friday afternoon from the Waterford church. The remains were interred at Door village.

PROVOLT, ELIZA – From unknown La Porte newspaper, 30 January 1875 - The funeral of Mrs. Eliza Provolt, of Rolling Prairie, last Sabbath afternoon, was largely attended. Rev. Kendall, of La Porte, preached the discourse. Mrs. Provolt was highly respected and a member of the Presbyterian Church, and commanded the esteem of all who knew her. Several La Porteans attended her funeral. Mrs. Eliza Provolt was born in New Jersey, July 9, 1810. She was raised and married in that State and subsequently settled with her husband Ezekiel Provolt on Rolling Prairie in May, 1831, being among the very first who made homes on those beautiful, fertile lands. Ezekiel Provolt died in March 1842; his widow never remarried. The deceased united with the Presbyterian church (the same which was organized in 1833) about 32 years ago, and was oneof the true Christians whose walk was a path and light to others. No woman was more widely loved. For some years she had suffered from weak lungs, and the immediate cause of her death was a violent cold contracted a week or so before. The remains of the departed were laid in the cemetery at Rolling Prairie, beside those of her husband.

Puffpaff, Albert - LaPorte Argus p 4 29 Oct 1907 - -The funeral of Albert Puffpaff, formerly of LaPorte, who died sat. morning at his home in Michigan City, was held at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon from St. John's church in MC. The serv. were conducted by Rev. Paul Irion. At 3 o'clock the remains were taken to Pine Lake cem. for burial by way of the interurban. Three special cars had been provided for the fun. party. Two of these went over with several LaPorte friends of the deceased and his family, including members of the LaPorte Knights of Pythias and Terpany tent of Maccabees. The pallbearers were chosen from those two lodges. The third car was set aside for the family of the deceased and his Michigan City friends.

- Albert Christian Pufpaff died this morning at the family home 304 E. Baltimore St from a complication of diseases having been ailing the past 4 years. Mr. Puffpaff was born May 8, 1861 in LaPorte and was married June 8, 1884 to Miss Cornelia Iffland, the widow who survives. Four children are left as follows: Louella, Edna, Cornelia and Louise. One brother survives, Theodore of LaPorte and two sisters, Mrs. William Zach of LaPorte and Mrs. Fred Dahne of Cleveland, Ohio. His mother, Mrs. Dorothy Pufpaff resides in LaPorte. The family resided in LaPorte until six years ago when they moved to Michigan City. He was a cabinet maker by trade. he was a member of the LaPorte Tend, KO TM and LaPorte Lodge, Knights of Pythias.    The funeral of the late A.C. Puffpaff was held this afternoon. Services were in St. John's church at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Paul Iron. Puffpaff , Cornelia - Mich. City News Dispatch 6-6-1944 p 2 - Mrs. Cornelia (Iffland) Puffpaff 81, 304 E. 11th died at 9 pm. Monday of a cerebral hemorrhage. She was b. May 12, 1863 in Laporte the daughter of George & Cornelia (Schwartz) Iffland and was married there to Albert C. Puffpaff who d. Oct 25, 1907. Surviving are 4 daughters, Mrs OD Hitt, Mrs Charles C Gale, Miss Cornelia Puffpaff & Mrs VA Drout, all of this city; 6 grandchildren and one gr. grandchild; one sister, Mrs. John Studinger, Chicago; and a brother Fred Iffland of South Bend. She was a member of St. Johns Evan. & Ref Church; Winona Rebekah Lodge #49 and Ladies Aid Society of St. John's. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Thurs at the Hummer mort. Rev AP Hardt will officiate and burial in Pine Lake. Friends may call Wednesday evening and Thursday until the hour of the funeral at the Hummer Mortuary.

PUFFPAFF - Obituary, Paper: ?Michigan City or LaPorte??? THEODORE PUFFPAFF MEETS DEATH ON RAIL. LaPorte man instantly killed on Michigan Central Tracks Here. BODY FOUND NEAR CROSSING Skull Fractured, Both Feet and one Leg severed, Head and Body Cut and Bruised. Theodore Puffpaff, a LaPortean, aged about 45 years, was instantly killed at the second street crossing of the Michigan Central in this city between 8 and 8:30 o'clock Sunday night by one of two passenger trains that went west-No.23 at 8:13 or No. 31 at 8:18-presumably the latter. The body was seen lying on the West bound track about 75 feet west of the Second street crossing by Conductor Fred Jesse of a freight train that came in froim the West about 8:30 o'clock. One of the trainmen called the attention of pedestrians to the fact that there was an object on the west bound track. They investigated, and finding the body telephoned the police at 8:35. Deputy Coroner Blinks was notified and Brinkmann Brothers ambulance was called.
     BODY BADLY MUTILATED An investgation by Chief Haller, Captain Heuring, Officier Schlene, Dr. Blinks and a Dispatch reporter revealed the fact that the man had been struck a few feet west of Second street crossing and dragged and rolled to the point where he was found. His Clothing was torn to shreds and he was practically nude. Both feet were severed at the ankles, and the right arm was cut at the shoulder. The body had also been crushed and the skull fractured, showing ghastly scalp wounds. That death was practically instantaneous there was no room for doubt. Particles of clothing, flesh, etc., were strewn along the track. The accepted theory is that he was walking westward along the westbound track and did not hear the approach of the train behind him.
     WATCH AND PURSE FOUND Fred Bladdie, a brakeman, found the man's watch on the track, still ticking off the time, and Officier Schlene found his purse, which had been cut in two, but which still contained a ring and a few other articles. About $1.40 in cash was found in his trouser pockets. In his coat, or what was left of it,were found a number of cards and letters. These bore his name and made identity an easy matter. However there was a young man from LaPorte in the crowd who recognized him before the letters were found. Max Voss and R. A. Pearson, two LaPorte young men, were among the first to reach the body, and Mr. Voss telephoned the police.
     CAME HERE FREQUENTLY. Puffpaff was a bachelor and worked as a laborer and odd job man about LaPorte. Of late he had been employed as porter at Leonard Hoover's saloon. He is survived by a sister in LaPorte. POTTER'S FIELD AWAITS HIM. Friends and relatives in LaPorte have been notified of Puffpaff's death, but so far no one has expressed a desire to claim the remains and bear the funeral expenses. The "Whispering pines" will no doubt have a chance to "sing a solemn requiem over another unmarked grave".
