HACKER, EVA M. – La Porte Herald Argus, 21 April 1967 - Mrs. Eva M. Hacker, 88, of 104 First street, formerly of Rolling Prairie, died at 12:15 a. m. today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Fissgus. She was born Sept. 22, 1878 in Galena Township to Capt. A. B. and Amanda (Hudson) Austin and had lived in the area her lifetime. Mrs. Hacker was a former school teacher and also formerly operated a grocery store in Rolling Prairie. She was married Oct. 8, 1910 to Ray C. Hacker, who preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Fissgus, La Porte, and Mrs. Ellen Windsor, South Bend; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Sunday at the Haverstock Funeral home with the Rev. Richard Bruner officiating. Burial will be in the Rolling Prairie cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from tomorrow noon and until time of services.

HAFERKAMP, WILLIAM J. – Michigan City News Dispatch - June 30, 1952 - William J. Haferkamp, 76, 2105 Woodlawn Dr., died at 11:25 a.m. Saturday at his home after a long illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Giese and Kimball Memorial Home with the Rev. Manfred E. Reinke officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City. Friends may call at the Memorial Home tonight and tomorrow until the hour of service.

Mr. Haferkamp was born Sept. 21, 1875, in LaPorte County, the son of William H. and Dorothea (Zahrt) Haferkamp. He was married Nov. 28, 1934, in Chicago to Minnie J. Witte, who survives. Also surviving are three brothers – Henry and Fred, LaPorte; and Louis R.R. 1, LaPorte; three sisters – Mrs. Irvin Bauch and Mrs. Herman Eggert, both of R.R. 2, LaPorte, and Miss Ruth Haferkamp, R.R. 1, LaPorte, and several nieces and nephews. The deceased lived most of his life in LaPorte County and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Farm Bureau. County reference – La Porte County, Indiana.

Hagerty, James, Sr. - LaPorte Herald Argus, Monday, Nov. 15, 1965 "James Hagerty, Sr., 64, of 902 1/2 Michigan Avenue died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Holy Family hospital. He had been ill for two months. Mr. Hagerty was born in LaPorte on Feb 16, 1901 and lived here most of his life. His parents were Amburs and Nora Hagerty. He was married in South Bend in 1930 to Marie Brown who died in 1959. Mr. Hagerty was a member of St. Peter's Catholic church.
Surviving are two sons, George, LaPorte, and James, Jr., Whittier, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Wessen, Whittier, Calif; one sister, Sister Mary Bertha, Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Paul Hagerty, Leesburg, Fla. and one granddaughter. Two brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at St. Peter's Catholic church at 9 a.m. Wednesday with Msgr. Lawrence T. Grothouse officiating. Burial will be in Foster cemetery, Rolling Prairie. Friends may call at the Essling Funeral home at 1 p.m. tomorrow and until time of services. Hakes, Edgar - LaPorte Daily Herald November 23, 1904     Edgar Hakes, a well-known farmer of Wills township, met almost instant death last night on the Lake Shore crossing just east of the station at Rolling Prairie. He was driving home and presumably neither heard nor saw eastbound train No. 20, which was running fast, and which caught the rig between the horse and buggy.
  The animal, which also was killed, was thrown on the south side of the track, while the buggy and occupant were thrown 150 feet from the crossing to the north. Hakes had been in Rolling Prairie to make arrangements with relatives to care for some of his children over Thanksgiving, as his eldest daughter, who since the death of his wife and mother had been at the head of the household, was going away on a visit. He left the village about 10:30 p.m..
  The train was due at 10:35 but did not pass the station until 10:39. The accident happened less than half a minute later. The engineer did not see the rig until an instant before the pilot caught it. He quickly applied the brakes and reversed the lever and then backed into the station, where a report was made. Railroad men soon found the dead and mangled horse, the wrecked buggy and the warm but lifeless body of Hakes. It was neither cut nor mangled, - a fractured skull showing the cause of death. It was found that Hakes had the side curtains on and this undoubtedly prevented him from seeing or hearing the train. If he knew the time the train was due he must have thought it had passed for it was after the time when it should have gone through the village.
  Word of the fatality was at once sent to Coroner Bowell and undertakers Weir & Sievert of this city. Mr. Weir at once left for Rolling Prairie, where the body was prepared for burial, being taken to the home this morning. The latest victim of this Rolling Prairie crossing, which has claimed many, was 43 years old and is survived by eight children. Hall, Amos C. Sr. - The following is an obituary of Amos C Hall Sr., taken from the newspaper “The Daily Herald” published in La Porte, Indiana, October 13 (Friday) 1897.

Began life like Garfield.

As youth drove mules on canal tow paths.

Was a man who saw an opportunity but to grasp it, thereby mounting the ladder of fame.

An eventful career has come to an end. Life’s curtain has been rung down and Amos C Hall Sr., lives only in the memory of a host of mortals who knew and respected him in life but now mourn in sympathy with the family which is bowed down in grief at his taking away.

Amos C Hall Sr. died at 4:20 o’clock yesterday afternoon. With the setting of the sun that which was mortal of the venerable gentleman parted from earthly body and winged its way to that invisible home, His makers abode. The last came unaccompanied by that awful struggle for the mastery. For a month it had been known that the end was not far distant, there being a gradual sinking away of energy and vitality. For a week the change had been most noticeable. Up to Tuesday Mr. Hall had been up and out in the air but only with great effort. For twenty years the man had been a victim of kidney trouble, which at first was diagnosed as Bright’s disease. During the past twelve years his disease had attacked him with such force during the winter months that he found it necessary to confine himself in the house. During the summer he always rallied and was able to go out on the streets and mingle with his friends and acquaintances. Since Mrs. Halls death about three years ago, he has been worse than on former occasions. The shock was such a severe one that he never recovered from it.

The subject of this sketch was one son or Mr. and Mrs. Luther Hall and was born in Marcy, Oneida County, New York, June 17, 1817. His father was one of the pioneer settlers of that county. Amos Hall was born on a farm on which he lived with his parents until he attained the age of ten years. He picked up what little education was to be had in that early day in a frontier town, for frontier it was at that time, and then he saw an opening for at least the extension of his experience. He, as did that noble man of later years, James A Garfield, secured a position on the tow path of the Erie Canal driving mules. He did the work so well and showed such an apt ability to see into the details of the business that he was soon promoted to the rank of Captain in the canal service. After a few years he went down the Mississippi to New Orleans where he remained a couple of years. He then quitted the south and returned to his native state. By the time he retained his majority he displayed a great liking for politics his ability being recognized by the politicians of the day. His first success in the political field was in 1838 when he was elected supervisor of his township. Later he was chosen and served a term as town clerk. His shrewdness in political was secured him a position in New York Legislature, he serving two terms at the time Horatio Seymour was governor. Mr Hall and the governor were personal friends, having been schoolmates in their youth. In 1843 Mr Hall was united in marriage with Miss Anna Shepardson. She was opposed to Mr. Halls political aspiration and obtained from him his consent to come west, she thinking in this way to separate him from political affairs. At the expiration of Mr. Halls term in the legislature, 1853, the family moved west locating in this county at Door Village, where Mr. Hall purchased a farm. In connection therewith he instituted a lumber business near Otis. He cleared the land and erected a saw mill doing business there for five years. He sold out the business and for two years gave his attention exclusively to farming. Next he secured a contract with the Pan Handle Railway Company, he operating a pile driver while the company’s line was being extended. His Business caused him to move his family to Washington Heights, Illinois, where he had charge of the railway company’s station for three years. He gave this up and returned to Door Village where he lived on the farm for one year, then going to Logansport, this state. He opened and conducted a railway hotel. During his sojourn in that place he launched into politics and was elected Mayor, serving creditable for three terms. In 1875 he was appointed deputy warden of the northern prison causing his removal to Michigan City. He held that position until October, 1879, vacating that office to enter upon the duties of auditor of La Porte County, to which office he was elected during his residence in Michigan City. He remained in the auditor’s office for two terms, during which time La Porte was made his home. Upon retiring from the courthouse he continued to reside in this city, remaining here until death called him to a higher home. During his entire public career he was a Democrat, fearless in his utterances, and labored for the promotion of those principals he stood to uphold.

A coincident in the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Hall was that both came from families in which there were thirteen children. Mr. Hall was the last, save one, of his family. A sister Eliza H Buchanan of Clayville NW (?), ten years Mr. Halls senior, still lives.

Six children survive their parents, they being: Charlotta Coffeen, La Porte; Luther Hall, Grand Crossing, Illinois; Silas W Hall, Sioux City Iowa; Lydia A Gilleland, Evanston, Illinois; Amos C Hall, Grand Crossing, Illinois; Minnie S Wells, Englewood.

Mr Hall was a member of both the Odd Fellows and Masonic fraternities, having been connected with them for years.

The funeral services are to be held in the Methodist Episcopal church Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev C L Bovard officiating. Internment in Pine Lake Cemetery. Contributed by: Lisa Tew

Halter, passed away yesterday at the Holy Family hospital after an illness of four months with a complication of diseases. The daughter of Philander and Lavina Ackley, she was born in Wills township, near Rolling Prairie, on April 12, 1878, and lived there all her life. On Dec. 28, 1902 in Rolling Prairie, she was married to William H. Halter. She was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist church. Surviving are her husband; one son. Herschel Halter of Rolling Prairie; two daughters, Mrs. Zena Spade of La Porte and Miss Dorothy Halter at home; six grandchildren. Her mother preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 1936; her sister, Mrs. Anna Burden, passed away in August, 1935. A daughter also preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Monday afternoon at the Haverstock chapel. The Rev. Clayton H. Wilson will officiate and burial will be in the Rolling Prairie cemetery. Halter, Carl P. – The La Porte Herald-Argus, Friday, 10 May 1946    Funeral services for Carl P. Halter, 67, of Rolling Prairie, who died at 12:30 yesterday afternoon at his home, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at he Haverstock chapel with the Rev. George E. Hartz officiating. Burial will be in the Baptist cemetery. The son of Jacob and Ellen Halter, he was born in Wills township, La Porte county, on May 11, 1878, and had lived in this vicinity all his life. On June 19, 1943, he was married to Ruth Fredenburg, who survives. HALTER, FLORENCE – La Porte Herald Argus, 27 September 1951 - Mrs. Florence Halter, 92, of route 1, Rolling Prairie, died at 12:30 o’clock this morning at the White Tower Nursing home after an illness of several months. Mrs. Halter was born in Rolling Prairie in the same house she lived in to the time of her illness on Dec. 19, 1859. She had lived in La Porte county all her life. She was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving is one son, Marvin E. Halter, at home. Her husband and one daughter preceded her in death. HALTER, SARAH JOSEPHINE – From unknown La Porte newspaper, 22 February 1937 Mrs. Sarah Josephine (Culveyhouse) Halter, age 83, of Rolling Prairie, passed away at her home at 3:15 p. m. Saturday after an illness of eight years with a complication of diseases. Mrs. Halter was born in Rolling Prairie on Dec. 31, 1853 and spent all her life in or near that community. On December 19, 1875 in La Porte she was married to John S. Halter, who preceded her in death on Aug. 14, 1914. Surviving are one son, John Merril Halter of Rolling Prairie; two grandchildren, Mrs. George Burkett of Michigan City and Roy Halter of Chicago; five great-grandchildren. One son and one daughter preceded Mrs. Halter in death. She was the last surviving member of a large family. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the home in Rolling Prairie. The Rev. H.L. McBride will officiate and burial will be in the Rolling Prairie cemetery with O. M. He was the only son of Henry and Rebecca Hammond. Mr. Hammond was married March 17, 1874, to Adeline Chambers, who survives him, together with five children and seven grandchildren. The children are Claude H. Hammond, Mrs. Daisy Wright, Chicago; Mrs. Pearl Knapp, Rice Lake, Wis.; Mrs. Elgie Granacas, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Clyde M. Hammond, Wausau, Wis. HANSKE, JEFFERY L. - (Michigan City News-Dispatch, Saturday, April 25, 1981) - Jeffery L. Hanske, 27, 501 Tremont St., died at 6:15 p.m. yesterday (April 24, 1981) at South Bend (Ind.) Memorial Hospital following a two-month illness. Funeral arrangements are pending at Carlisle Funeral Home. Mr. Hanske was born Nov. 27, 1953, in Michigan City to Walter J. and Florence Young Hanske, both of whom survive. Also surviving is a son, Christopher 4; two sisters and two brothers; Joel Hanske, Janet Dolph and Jaqueline Hanske, all of Michigan City and John Hanske, serving in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Hanske was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1972 – 1976. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

HANSKE, WALTER – (Michigan City News-Dispatch, Tuesday, January 17, 1984) Walter James Hanske, 66, Michigan City, died a 1 a.m. today (Jan. 17, 1984) at his residence after a six-month illness.

  Mr. Hanske was born Jan. 16, 1918, in Lincoln, Neb., the son of Walter V. and Margaret Carruth Hanyzewski. he was a lifelong resident of Michigan City and had been a machinist at Joy Manufacturing Co. He retired in 1980. On Nov. 5, 1951, in Hernando, Miss., he married Florence Young, who survives.
  Also surviving are two sons, Joel Walter and John Robert Hanske, Michigan City; two daughters, Janet Dolph, LaPorte and Jaqueline Hanske, Michigan City; five grandchildren; and five sisters, Pearl Burns, Kingman, Ariz., Jean Furaitar and Phyllis Piotrowskim both of Michigan City, Ruth Frye, Harrisonburg, VA, and Barbara Langford, Flint, Mich., A son Jeffery is deceased. Hanville, Newel B.   - Michigan City News Dispatch March 28, 1940, Page 9, col 2 - Newel B. Hanville, 81, died at 12:30 p.m. yesterday at his home in Otis from complications following a fall on the ice six weeks ago. Mr. Hanville was born in Galena Twp., Oct. 19,1858, but spent most of his life in the West returning to Michigan City about 20 years ago. For the past nine years he lived at Otis.
Surviving are his wife, Maude Smith Hanville, and a large number of nieces and nephews and their children, including, Guy E. Davis, this city, Mrs. R. R. Reisinger, Gary; Mrs. Abbie Coombs, Galena Twp., and Mrs. Harry Pardonnier, Chicago.

HANYZEWSKI, MISS BERNICE – (Michigan City Evening News Monday, June 17, 1935)     Shock following an operation for appendicitis resulted in the death of Miss Bernice Hanyzewski, 607 Greenwood, Sunday morning at St. Anthony Hospital. She had been ill since May 18. Miss Hanyzewski was born in this city, Nov. 27, 1821. She was a pupil in Junior high school.
  Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hanyzewski, a brother Walter, Jr., and five sisters, Misses Verna, Pearl, Jean, Ruth and Phyllis, all of this city, survive. Funeral services will be held in the First Baptist church Wednesday at 2, Rev. H. E. Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood. HANYZEWSKI, MARGARET – (Michigan City News Dispatch Monday, April 10, 1972) Margaret C. (Hanske) Hanyzewski, 71, R.R. 3, Box 685, died in St. Anthony Hospital at 6:15 last night, after a brief illness. She was born in Omaha, Neb., Nov. 26, 1900, the daughter of William and Margaret Brown Carruth. She was married Feb. 17, 1916, here to Walter V. Hanyzewski, who died Feb. 7, 1966.
  Surviving are one son, Walter J. Hanske, this city; seven daughters, Mrs. Robert Piotrowski, Mrs. Johnny Jackson, and Mrs. Luella Furaitar, all of Michigan City, Mrs. Floyd Heck, Tucson, Ariz., Mrs. Charles Burns, Kalamazoo, Mich., Mrs. John Frye, Harrisonburg, VA., and Mrs. Barbara Langford, Flint, Mich., 36 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. She was a member of Queen of All Saints Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. The Rev. Alfred Dettmer will officiate. HANYZEWSKI, ROBERT – (Mich. City News Dispatch Saturday, November 16, 1968)     Robert J. Hanyzewski, 41, 517 Tremont St., died at St. Anthony Hospital at 8:15 last night. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Albert Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
  Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening and Tuesday until the funeral hour at Ott Funeral Chapel. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Mr. Hanyzewski was born in Michigan City Nov. 17, 1926, the son of Walter and Marie Pekulik Hanyzewski, and was a lifelong resident of the city. He was employed as a machine operator at Lincoln Molded Plastic Survivors include two sisters Mrs. Dallas Coomes and Evelyn Koepke, both of this city and three brothers Valerian, Richard and Leonard all of this city. He served for two years in the Army during the Korean War.

HANYZEWSKI, VALERIAN – (Mich. City News Dispatch Monday, November 27, 1972)     Valerian (Ollie) Hanyzewski, 51, 801 Russell St., was dead on arrival at 4:50 this morning at St. Anthony Hospital, where he was taken from his home after suffering and apparent heart attack.
  Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Ott Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Albert Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday until the hour of services.
  Mr. Hanyzewski, an employee of U.S. Steel Co. for three years, was born May 10, 1921, the son of Valerian G. and Marie Pekulik Hanyzewski. On April 14, 1962, he was married in Valparaiso to Florence Siwek, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Peggy Jackson; a son, Charles; his mother; two sisters – Dorothy Coomes and Evelyn Koepke; two brothers – Richard and Leonard, and two grandchildren, all of this city.

HANYZEWSKI, WALTER V. (Michigan City News Dispatch Tuesday, Feb. 8, 1966)    Walter V. Hanyzewski, 74 R.R. 2, Gruenke Road, died at 1718 Elston St., yesterday. He had been ill since October. Funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at Queen of All Saints church with Rev. Leonard J. Cross officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
  Friends may call at the Carlisle Funeral Home from tomorrow afternoon. The Rosary will be recited there at 8 p.m. tomorrow.
  A lifelong resident of this city Mr. Hanyzewski was born here Jan. 13, 1892, the son of Andrew and Wanda Kimnetz Hanyzewski. He was retired in 1958 from Bastian-Morley Co., Inc., LaPorte. He also was a carpenter. On Feb. 17, 1916, he was married here to Margaret Carruth, who survives. He was a member of at Queen of All Saints Church and Holy Name Society.
  Also surviving are a son Walter, this city; seven daughters, Verna Heck and Ruth Frye, both of Chicago, Pearl burns, Kalamazoo, Mich., Phyllis Piotrowski, Barbara Lanford and Margaret Hanyzewski all of this city, and Jean Furaitar, LaPorte; 50 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; a sister Mrs. Richard Gemberling, and a brother, Martin, both of this city. Hapke, Adolph - Michigan City News Dispatch May 20, 1949, pg 2 col 4     Alfred Hapke, 79, 609 Pearl, retired jeweler, died at 11:30 p.m. Thursday at his home. He had been in failing health for some time. Funeral services will be at 2;30 p.m. Monday at the Hummer mortuary with Rev. A. P. Hardt officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary Sunday afternoon, evening and Monday until the funeral hour. Mr. Hapke was born May 30, 1869, in Germany, the son of Christian and Christina (Schlaak) Hapke. He had lived in this country since he was a small child. On Nov. 3, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo., he married Lizzie Blessin, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Rudolph Hapke, Washington D.C., a daughter, Mrs. Franklin A. Clouser, St. Louis; three grand children and three brothers - Henry Hapke, St Joseph, Mich., and John A. Hapke and Edward C. Hapke, both of this city. Mr. Hapke was a member of St. Johns Evangelical and Reformed Church. He served his jeweler's apprenticeship under N. V. Cole in this city, then opened a store in Newman, Ill., which he operated for 13 yrs. Then he moved to Kansas City where he operated a store for 25 yrs. He retired in May 1946 and returned to this city to make his home.

Hapke, Chris - Michigan City News - Jul 10, 1901, pg 5 col 7     Chris Hapke, an old and well known resident of Michigan township, died Tuesday afternoon following a long illness from Bright's disease. Mr. Hapke has been bedfast since May 7 and death came as a relief after long suffering. Mr. Hapke was born in Germany and was 58 years old January 18. He had resided in this country for 32 years, having settled in this county on coming from Germany. He leaves a widow and six children who are: Adolph of Newman, Ill., Henry, Charles, John and Edward and Mrs. George Heise of this city. The funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from St. John's Church, Rev. J.G. Hoch officiating. Mr. Hapke was a member of St. John's Aid Society.

Hapke, Lois - Michigan City News Dispatch - March 4, 1975     Mrs. Lois M. Hapke, 65, 609 York St., died at 2 this morning, March 4, 1975 in St. Anthony Hospital after an illness of two weeks. Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Hummer-White Mortuary with the Rev. Paul H. Frenkenfeld officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Hapke was born in Michigan City May 26, 1909, the daughter of Clark and Mina (Valstorf) Holloway. On May 2, 1930, she was married here to Alfred Hapke, who survives. Also surviving are three children - David, Dennis and Mrs. Frank Hutchinson, all of this city; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Robert Humphrey, Valparaiso. Mrs. Hapke was a member of St. John's United church of Christ.

HARNESS, ELBERT -LaPorte County Museum in LaPorte, LaPorte, IN. (May 21, 1988)     Elbert W. Harness, 63, of 1088 E. Ind. 2, Lot 6, died Saturday, May 21, 1988, at 6:48 pm at LaPorte Hospital. He was born May 10, 1925, at Mill Creek, to Elbert and Golda Mae (Reed) Harness and lived here all his life. A graduate of Mill Creek High School, he was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church; Michigan City DAV; North Liberty VFW; Fish Lake American Legion Post of which he was past commander; past chef de gare of Voiture 276 40 & 8 and served with the 101st Airborne Division in WW II. He had retired as a captain from Pinkerton Security. On Dec 21, 1945, in South Bend, he married Virginia Okrzeski, who died in 1974. On Nov. 25, 1983, in Mill Creek, he married Ruth Andrews, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jaquin (Linda) Torres, of LaPorte, and Mrs. Tim (Sheila) Bruce of Michigan City; one son Allen Dale, of Houston, Texas; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Wesley (Maxine) Worthington, of North Liberty; one brother, Allen H. of Goshen, and a number of nephews and nieces. His parents, two brothers, one sister and two grandchildren preceded him in death. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:30 pm at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Devenport officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2-9 pm and until the service on Tuesday. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 400. Harness, Carrie - Obituary in the Herald Argus August 30, 1927     After her husband, Simeon died she went on to live with her daughter, Cora, and her husband, Walter Schultz, Mrs. Carrie Harness, widow of Simeon Harness, who precede her in death eight years ago, passed away yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Schultz, living nine miles north of this city. Mrs. Harness had been in failing health for some time, but was confined to bed for only the last 10 days. In the last few days she showed improvement and while those who watched over her so carefully felt greatly encouraged she passed away suddenly at noon yesterday at the age of 69 years. She was born April 28, 1858 in LaPorte County and had lived here all her life. Mrs. Harness was a patient sufferer, a loving and devoted mother and always looked on the bright side of life, her friends say. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Louis Swartzell of this city and Mrs. Walter Schultz of Springfield township, with whom she made her home; two grandchildren Victor and Betty Jean Schultz, five brothers and one sister besides many other relatives and a host of friends. She was a member of the Methodist church. Funeral services will be held at the Oak Grove church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. Short services will be held at the house at 1:15. The Rev. P.T. Shields of South Bend will officiate. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery with E.E. Ebbert in charge.

Elbert Harness – LaPorte County Museum in LaPorte, LaPorte, IN (Sep 25, 1939)     Seized with a sudden heart-ailment while directing the Mill Creek Baptist church choir at 8 o'clock last night, Elbert Harness, 57, Mill Creek postmaster, died within a few minutes. He was removed from the church to his home nearby but died before medical attention reached him. Mr. Harness was a life-long resident of Mill Creek. He had given no indication of illness during the evening or when he arose to direct the choir in the evening anthem. Suddenly he slumped to the platform and a number of choir members hurried to his aid. Mr. Harness was born in Mill Creek Dec 10, 1881, the son of Lorenzo and Abigail Harness, and had lived there all his life. He was married Nov. 24, 1909 at LaPorte to Golda Reed, who survives him. He is also survived by four sons, Allen, of LaPorte, the county school instrumental music supervisor; Dale, Westley, and Elbert, Jr., all at home; two daughters, Maxine and Kathleen both at home, and two sisters, Mrs. Albert Thayer and Mrs. George Bracken both of Mill Creek. Mr. Harness was a deacon in the Mill Creek Baptist church, as well as choir director. For a number of years he operated a general store in Mill Creek, but more recently he had devoted his attention of the postmaster.

Harness, Mrs. Hattie H. – LaPorte Daily Herald-Argus May 6, 1938     Mrs. Hattie H. Harness, age 49, wife of Lewis E. Harness of rural route # 4, passed away at 7:15 last evening, May 5, 1938 at the Fairview Hospital after a week’s illness.
   Mrs. Harness was widely known in LaPorte, as well as in the Mill Creek community and elsewhere in the county.
   The daughter of Ernest and Eva Rang, she was born at New Washington, Ohio on June 14, 1888.
   She had lived in this county for the past 34 years moving here from Starke County. She was a member of the Women’s Benefit Association, the Royal Neighbors of LaPorte and the Salem Ladies Aid. She is survived by her husband, one son, Gerald E. Harness at home; one daughter, Mrs. Beatrice G. Crippen of Detroit: three sisters, Mrs. Dora Heffner of Mishawaka, Mrs. Ida Schultz of Saginaw, Michigan; and Mrs. Rosa Lutts of Elkhart, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday afternoon, Daylight Savings Time at the First Methodist Church. The Rev. Clyde H. Lininger will officiate and burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery with O.M. Haverstock.

Her husband and two brothers preceded her in death.

Harrington, Henry B. – Daily Herald, Wednesday, November 8, 1893     Mr. (Herrington) was born in Franklin county, Ohio, June 9, 1830, and died at the home of his son, Orlando, in Galena, Nov. 5, 1893. The funeral was held at the Shippeeburg school house, Nov. 7. The Baptist minister of New Buffalo, Rev. Mr. Spafford officated. Mr. Herrington was a soldier in the late war and a member of the G.A.R. He requested to be laid away according to the rites and ceremonies of that order. Quite a large number of the G.A.R.'s came out from La Porte and respectfully and tenderly laid away their comrade in the Shippeeburg cemetery.

HARRIS, JAMES B. – The La Porte Daily Herald, 3 June 1927 - James B. Harris passed away at 7:30 o’clock Saturday morning at his home near Rolling Prairie. Death was caused by a sudden attack of heart disease. The funeral services were held at the Christian church Tuesday afternoon. A wealth of beautiful flowers and a crowded church attested to the regard held for the deceased. The Rev. D. R. Badders and the Rev. M. G. Long of La Porte officiated. Mrs. Harold Hofer and Miss Hester Worden sang. The pallbearers were the sons of the late Mr. Harris. Interment was in the Rolling Prairie cemetery.

P 2, col 1 - Mrs. Henrietta Harris, age 78, of 106 Virginia avenue, died at the Holy Family hospital yesterday at 4:35 p. m. after an illness of four years and five months. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Ingram, Mrs. Harris was born in Wills township on Nov. 6, 1850, living in this county all her life. She was married Dec. 24, 1872, to Charles Harris, who preceded her in death. Five children also preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons, Russell and Harold Harris, both of La Porte; three grandchildren; a brother, John Ingram of La Porte, and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Thomas and Mrs. Florence Thomas of La Porte and Mrs. Jane Drebing on Davenport, Ia. Funeral services will be held at the O. M. Haverstock chapel Monday afternoon at 1:30, the Rev. M. G. Long officiating. Harsen, Ida - LaPorte Herald-Argus - 9 Sep 1940 - Mrs. Ida Harsen Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in Chicago for Mrs. Ida Harsen, age 82, of Chicago, formerly of LaCrosse, who was fatally injured Monday afternoon when she was struck by an automobile in Chicago. She died Wednesday. Mrs. Harsen lived in LaCrosse for many years and recently had made her home with her daughter, Miss Nell Harsen. Hart, Burton O.   - LaPorte Herald Argus, Monday, March 17, 1952 - Burton O. Hart, 79, of route 1, LaPorte, died at 9:45 last evening in St. Anthony's hospital, Michigan City, after an illness of 16 months.
The son of George and Bell Hart, he was born in Winterset, Ia., on Oct 7, 1872 and had lived here for 28 years. He was a carpenter.
He was married in LaPorte on Nov 8, 1938 to Ella A. Eastwood, who survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Vaughn Young of Vincennes, Ind.; and Mrs. Donald Longnecker, Brighton, Mich.; one son, Robert A. Eastwood, Wayne, Mich.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Kirts, Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Myrtle Chapman, Greenfield, Ill.

Hartman, Florence, Mrs. - Obituary approximate date 1955 - Mrs. Florence Hartman, 79, of 210 Park street, died at 11:50 Saturday morning at the White Tower Nursing home here after an illness of one year. Mrs. Hartman was born in Benton County, Ia., to John and Caroline Harger on March 8, 1876 and had lived here 20 years, coming from North Dakota. She was married in Minneapolis in 1919 to G.A. Hartman. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist church. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Thelma Feather, Campbellsville, Ky.; Mrs. Lola Hatfield and Mrs Ethelyn White, LaPorte; Mrs. Zola Bergen, Phoenix, Ariz.; three sons, Winslow McVay, Campbellsville Ky.; and John McVay and Wilbert McVay, LaPorte, 31 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; one brother Ralph Harger, Brownstown, Ind.; and one sister, Mrs. Ad Dickinson, Campbellsville. Funeral services will be held at the Haverstock Funeral home with the Rev. Harry Hannah officiating. Burial will be in Patten cemetery. Harvey, Eliza A. Miss - November 9, 1861     DEATH: On Stillwell Prairie, October 26th ult., of consumption, Miss ELIZA A. HARVEY. A beloved and much esteemed friend and sister has been taken from earth; her spirit has goon to try the realities of an unseen and brighter world. For six months past has she been lingering with that fatal disease which resulted in her death. Through all her severe afflictions she was never heard to murmur or complain. She said she would not suffer more than was right for her to suffer. Although she wished not for human praise yet had she lived she no doubt would have merited the title "Mission of the Beautiful".

John A. Hastings & Jane Whitehead had 9 children. Alexander Sloan Hastings, Eliza A.Hastings, William O.Hastings, Mary Jane Hastings, Ella J. Hastings, Jessie Hastings, Livonia Hastings, Alice Hastings, and John Hastings. (Most of these are burried in the Old Baptist Cem, or the Oak Grove Cem.)Alexander S. Hatch, James B.   - Michigan City News, Friday, May 12, 1911 - James B. Hatch died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.G. Fleischauer of Rolling Prairie, Thursday. Several years ago Mr. Hatch suffered a stroke of paralysis and had been in ill health ever since. The funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the residence of the daughter, Rev. Mr. Wickham of the Christian church officiating. Interment will be at Foster's cemetery.

Hatch, Johnnie H.   - Michigan City News, October 24, 1894, P. 5, Col. 4 - Young Man Killed: John Hatch, who was formerly a fireman on the Michigan Central, was killed Tuesday night at Freeport, Ill. He was employed as a fireman on the Illinois Central, and was down under the engine cleaning out the ash-pan. The engineer forgetting that he was under the engine started the locomotive and Hatch was crushed to death. His relatives reside at Hatch's Mills, this county, and the body will be taken there for interment. Young Hatch was well known here among the railroad boys.

Hatfield, John - La Porte Daily Herald, Wed., Apr 17, 1895    John Hatfield was laid to rest last Thursday, funeral services being held at the Disciple church. Mr. Hatfield was nearly eighty years old. He leaves a wife and six children, who were all present at the funeral. Hatfield, William – Michigan City Dispatch, November 2, 1905 - William Hatfield of Galena township died last Monday of old age and general debility. He was eighty years old and had lived in the county sixty years. Mr. Hatfield leaves one daughter, Mrs. William Harley of Laporte. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at Rosenburg (Rossburg?) and the burial was at the Hesston cemetery.

HATHAWAY, DANIEL – Unknown La Porte newspaper, 15 September 1911 - Daniel Hathaway of Rolling Prairie died at 6:15 o’clock this morning after a long illness from cancer of the stomach. He was bedfast for four weeks. The funeral will be Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Methodist church at Rolling Prairie. Rev. D. E. Noland officiating and Decker Bros. being in charge of funeral arrangements. Interment will be at the Rolling Prairie cemetery. Deceased was born October 30, 1846 in St Joseph county. His occupation was that of a laborer. He was a resident of this county for ten years. Following service in the Civil war, during which he was a private in Co. D 128th Indiana Volunteers. Mr. Hathaway married America Curtis, who died in 1874.Two children resulted from this union. In 1876, Mr. Hathaway married Clarissa Jay, who with six children, Henry, Marshall, Albert, Abner, Nora, and Lilah, survives.

Haverstock, 77, Rolling Prairie, died at 6:10 p.m. Friday (March 26, 2004) at his home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Pastor John M. Vincent officiating. Burial is in Oak Grove Cemetery in Mill Creek. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. until the service Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Haverstock was born April 1, 1926, in LaPorte to Archie and Edna (Stoner) Haverstock. On Nov. 18, 1945, in Mill Creek, he married Georgiana "Butch" Hager, who survives. Survivors also include three sons, Jim (Sue) Haverstock, Bloomington, Ind., and Jack (Ronda) Haverstock and Tim (Becky) Haverstock, both of Rolling Prairie; three grandsons, Scott, Ryan and Kyle Haverstock; a granddaughter, Shauna (Shannon) Barnhart; two step-granddaughters, Jessica and Kathryn Orszulak; a step-grandson, Cory Orszulak; a step-great-granddaughter, Carlie Metcalf; and a brother, Donald (Peg) Haverstock, Rolling Prairie. Mr. Haverstock lived all of his life in the Rolling Prairie area. He was self-employed as a farmer and was a member of Sauktown Church of Christ, Rolling Prairie Masonic Lodge and LaPorte County Farm Bureau. Memorials may be sent to VNA Hospice of LaPorte. BERTHA HAY – Source 8/14/23 LaPorte Herald Argus, Tue, pg.10     Mrs. Bertha Hay, wife of Harry S. Hay 202 1/2 Park Street, died at 3 o'clock Sunday morning at the Holy Family hospital, following a month’s illness. The deceased, who was 36 years old, is survived by her husband and two sons and three daughters. She also leaves a father, three brothers, and three sisters. Mrs. Hay, who was formerly Bertha Jones, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Jones, was born February 14, 1887. She married May 28, 1907 and came to LaPorte eight years ago from Portland, Ind. Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church at Union Mills at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Burial will be in the Union Mills cemetery. E. E. Ebbert is in charge of the arrangements.

Hay, Harry Samuel - LaPorte Herald Argus on May 5, 1924     Harry Samuel Hay, living at 502 Jackson street, passed away Saturday morning at the age of 45 years, death following an illness of two weeks. The funeral services will be held at the Union Mills Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with interment in the Union Mills cemetery. E.E. Ebbert is the director. The deceased is survived by two sons, Orvil and Harry Hay, and three daughters, Catherine, Helen, and Margaret, and his mother, Mrs. Lutisha Hay, of this city. He was married April 28, 1907, to Bertha Jones, of Dunkirk, Indiana. Mr. Hay was a native of Noble Township, this county, where he was born November 24, 1878.

Hay, Mrs. Lutisha - Obituary in LaPorte Herald Argus on April 26, 1928     Mrs. Lutisha Hay: Funeral services for Mrs. Lutisha Hay, 237 Lincoln Way East, who died yesterday, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 at the Union Mills Methodist church. E.E. Ebbert will be in charge of the burial in the Union Mills cemetery. Mrs. Hay was born January 12, 1857 in South Carolina, but came here at the age of 12 years. She was united in marriage in 1873 to James Hay, now dead. Mrs. Hay was a member of the Adventist church. She is survived by three sons, John Hay of LaPorte, Charles Hay, Dodge City, Kan, Arthur Hay of LaPorte; 39 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Norman, Davis Station, Indiana.

Hay, John - Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus on July 17, 1972     John W. Hay, 90, of 609 ½ Lincoln Way, died Monday at 3 p.m. at the LaPorte hospital. He was born to James and Lutisha (Eller) Hay in Union Mills on January 27, 1883 and had lived here all of his life. He was a retired city employee. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Three brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Haverstock Funeral home, the Rev. Ronald A. Dubbles officiating. Visitation is Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday until the time of service. Burial will be in the Union Mills cemetery.

Hay, Orville Cedric - LaPorte Herald Argus, Tue, June 12, 1956, pg.2 - HAY FUNERAL-----Funeral services for Orville Cedric Hay, 48, of 212 Darlington Street, who died at 10 o'clock Sunday night at his home after an illness of several weeks, will be at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Kelly Funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery. Friends may call at the Kelly chapel today and until time of services. Mr. Hay was born March 14, 1908 in Indiana and had lived in LaPorte most of his life, come here from Union Mills. Mr. Hay, a laborer, was married Feb 13, 1934 in Michigan City to Hazel David. He was a member of the Assembly of God church. Surviving are his wife; five daughters, Bertha, Aletha, Sharon, Gloria and Katherina, all of LaPorte; two sons, Wilbur and Jerry, both of LaPorte, and three sisters, Mrs. Helen Scharnweber, St. Clair, Mich; Mrs. Katherine Jennings, Flint, Mich, and Mrs. Margaret Jackson, LaPorte.

Hays, Arthur - Obituary in the LaPorte Herald Argus - Arthur Hay, age 41, died Wednesday afternoon at 4:15 at the home of his niece, Mrs. William Southe, 1404 State street. The son of Mr. and Mrs. James Hay. Mr. Hay was born in LaPorte county and lived here all his life. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ellis and Mrs. Julian Palen of LaPorte, and two brothers, John Hay of LaPorte and Charles Hay of Dodge City, Kansas. The parents, two brothers and a sister precede him in death. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o’clock at St. Peter’s Catholic church, the Rev John C. Wakefer officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery with E.E. Ebbert in charge.

Heckman, Artimus (Asa Artimus) – Michigan City Evening Dispatch, September 24, 1926 - Asa Artimus Heckman, of Hatch’s Mills, rural free delivery two, Box 61, Laporte, died at 5 o’clock this morning, his death having been due to paralysis, gangrene in one foot and pneumonia. He was born on June 26, 1851. Mr. Heckman was a farmer for many years. Mrs. Heckman preceded him in death. Surviving him are one daughter, Mrs. Lucy Austin of Denver, Col.; four grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. L. Deprey of Laporte, and Mrs. Rachel Merchant, who resides near Laporte, and three brothers, B. F. Heckman of Hatch’s Mills, Miller Heckman of Elkhart and R. Heckman of Marshall, Mich. The funeral will be held at 1 o’clock next Tuesday afternoon from the Hesston church. Rev. Donald C. Ford, pastor of the First Christian church of this city, will officiate. Burial will be in the Hesston cemetery.

Heckman, Caroline “Carrie” Stites - Galena Gleanings, MC News November 1900 - "Died, at her home near Hesston November 18, of consumption, Mrs. Carrie (Stites) Heckman. The funeral occurred Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the home of deceased and interment took place at Pine Lake cemetery." MC Weekly News 5 Dec 1900 - "The last will and testament of the late Mrs. Caroline Heckman of Galena township was Saturday filed for probate in the office of County Clerk McClung. The testatrix leaves all of her cattle to her husband, Benjamin F. Heckman, and the rest of her estate is equally divided between her two children, Isaac N. and Rachel M. Heckman,. William H. Stites is made executor of the will, which was executed March 31, 1898."

Heckman, Issac – Michigan City News Final Edition, August 19, 1932 - Issac Heckman, 47 years old, died in the Holy Family hospital in Laporte Thursday, following an operation for appendicitis. Heckman was taken to the hospital Monday for the operation, but he failed to rally. He had been a resident of Galena township all his life. He was not married but lived with his mother, Mrs. Mary Heckman, who survives him. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Saturday, Standard Time, in the Heston Christian church with Rev. Thomas, of Rolling Prairie, officiating. Burial will be in the Heston cemetery, beside the church. Pallbearers will be Albert Moss, Leo Schumaker, Henry Burkholtz, Arthur Burkholtz, Edward Krueger and George Pagle.

Heckman, Jacob S.   - Michigan City Evening News, June 25, 1914 - Note from transcriber: This article indicates that interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. Interment was in Foster Cemetery, LaPorte County. - Jacob S. Heckman of New Buffalo, Mich., died at the home of his niece, Mrs. George Mann, near Byron, at 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. He was stricken with paralysis six weeks ago, from which he failed to rally.
He was born in Preble county, Ohio, March 25, 1829, and came to Berrien county, Mich., with his parents in 1830. His father, Jacob Heckman, was one of the founders of Berrien Springs. He moved from there to Galena twp in 1833. He married Laura K. Marshall, Feb. 28, 1850. To this union two children were born, Dr. A.P. Heckman, who was a physician of Reed City, Mich., and who died Dec. 24, 1897, and Mrs. Francis J. Fargher, who died June 1, 1898. His wife died August 4, 1894. He again married, Miss Elizabeth A. Ammons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Ammons, pioneers of St. Joseph county, Feb. 16, 1898. This union was a very happy one. He was a lifelong Republican. His first vote was for General Scott for president. He was a Mason, being initiated into the order in Rolling Prairie. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and held to that belief to the last, sincerely believing that Christ was his Savior and pleading not merits of his own, but came to him just as he was without one plea. Jacob S. Heckman was recognized as one of Laporte county's pioneers, ever to be trusted, and his word was as good as his note - loyal to the community in which he lived, to his country, family and above all loyal to his God. He leaves a wife, one brother, David, of Rolling Prairie, two sisters, Mrs. Mary A. Fuller of LaPorte and Mrs. Martha Woodmansee of Galena, and three grandsons, Dr. James F. Fargher of Laporte, Albert S. Fargher of Galena and George Fargher, Rolling Prairie. Services will be held at the residence of George Woodmansee, near Byron, on Thursday at 2 p.m., Rev. Nolan officiating, after which Mr. Heckman's remains will be taken to South Bend for burial in Riverview cemetery, previous to which short services will be held at the residence of Dr. D.M. Calver, 223 East Monroe, at 11 a.m. Friday.

Heckman, Laura K. (Marshall)   - Michigan City News August 8, 1894, Page 6, Col. 3 - Mrs. J.S. Heckman died Saturday night at her home in Galena township. For three years she had been suffering with a cancer, from the effects of which she died. The funeral was held today from the White church. Burial in Foster Cemetery.

Heckman, Melissa (Morrow) – Michigan City Evening News, November 13, 1913 - Mrs. David Heckman, aged 71, died Tuesday night at her home at Rolling Prairie. She had been in ill health for some time, but was taken with a stroke of apoplexy and died within a few minutes. She is survived by the husband, and one daughter, Mrs. George M. Leliter of near Rolling Prairie. Mr. and Mrs. Heckman were old residents of Galena township until a year ago, when they moved to Rolling Prairie. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 10 o’clock at the residence and burial will be at Hesston cemetery.

Heckman, Mina (Snow) – Michigan City News, April 8, 1908 - Mrs. Asa Heckman of Hatch’s Mills died while being taken to the Holy Family hospital in Laporte for an operation Thursday morning. Her body was taken to the home of Enoch Preston and was later removed to her home .

Heckman, Myrtle (Seward) - Michigan City Evening Dispatch, January 28, 1934 - Mrs. Myrtle Seward Heckman, age 56, a native of La Porte county, passed away Friday morning in South Bend. She was born at Hatch's Mills, this county, on March 12, 1878. She moved to South Bend 28 years ago. She was married in 1905 to Albert Miller Heckman in La Porte. Surviving are one daughter, Miss Mildred Heckman; two sisters, Mrs. S.C. Hunt and Mrs. Harry Turner, and two brothers, Norman A. Seward of this city, and George C. Seward of Harvey, Ill. Funeral services were held this afternoon in South Bend.

Heckman, Rachel (Paddock) – Jan 19, 1892 - From "The Jacob Heckman Family, LaPorte County, Indiana", by Agnes Merchant; Rachel Paddock was born in Onondaga Co., New York March 27, 1821. She taught public school at the age of 15 years in the state of New York, then came with her parents Levi and Marinda Paddock to Indiana. She and her mother made the trip in a sail boat the length of the great lakes landing at Michigan City in 1836. She taught public school in log school houses in Michigan and Indiana. Receiving at first $1.50 per week, later $2.00 per week until she was married in 1842. Grandpa Paddock and his son, Asa, drove through from New York to Indiana and Michigan. Diary of Arthur C. Davis 1892 - Jan. 19: Mrs. Theodric Heckman died this evening at 7 p.m. in the eastern edge of Springfield Twp......Jan 22: Mrs. Rachel Heckman was buried today at Christian Church, yard funeral at the same place. She was born in Onondaga Co., N.Y. in 1821. Came to this County in 1837. Married to Theodric Heckman in 1841. Mother of 11 children, 6 of whom survive her.

Heckman, Theodrick – The Acorn (Three Oaks, MI), Jan. 9, 1903 Mr. Ava Theodrick Heckman, an old resident of Hesston, died Friday, January 2, 1903, at the home of his son, Miller. T.A. Heckman was born in Virginia, February 24, 1820, and was married to Miss Rachel Paddock in 1842. He settled in Galena township in 1835 and has lived in LaPorte county about sixty seven years. Mrs. Heckman died January 19, 1892. One of his sons, Erasmus, is the Three Oaks township supervisor at the present time. His other sons are Frank and Ace. He also leaves two married daughters. Gallstones were the direct cause of his death. The funeral was held in the Hesston church on January 5, conducted by Elder Black, of Rolling Prairie. Interment was made at Hesston. The LaPorte Herald, Saturday, Jan. 3, 1903 "Theodore Heckman, one of the pioneer settlers of Galena township, died at his home Friday at the age of more than 80 years. He came to the township in 1835, with his father, Jacob Heckman. The funeral will be held at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon at his late residence."
  Argus Bulletin, Jan 3, 1903 - "T.L. Heckman, a pioneer resident of Galena township, passed away yesterday at the noon hour. He was past eighty years of age and death was due to the infirmities of his years. He was one of the early settlers of the county and had for years been a prominent farmer. He is survived by a brother, Jacob Heckman. Four sons, Miller, Asa, Frank and Erasmus, and one daughter also survive."

   Carl William Hedstrom, 90, of LaPorte, died at 6:25 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at LaPorte Hospital. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Door Village Cemetery in Door Village, with the Rev. Philip Lutz officiating. Burial will follow. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte. Mr. Hedstrom was born Feb. 6, 1907, in Quincy, Mass., the son of Rudolf and Anna Giller Hedstrom. On Jan. 28, 1928, in LaPorte, he married Aline Trainor, who preceded him in death on June 21, 1982. Surviving are a son, Norman R. Hedstrom, Rolling Prairie; a daughter, Carole Halley, La Mesa, Calif.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Vera (Glenn) Woodruff, Michigan City. He was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Hedstrom moved from Massachusetts to Door Village in 1909. In 1928, he moved to LaPorte. He was retired from Allis Chalmers, where he worked as a general foreman for 35 years. Memorials may be made to the Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church.

Hein, Adam – Michigan City News Final Edition, August 11, 1932 - Funeral services for Adam Hein, 86 years old, who died Tuesday at his home on rural route 1, La Porte, near New Buffalo, Michigan, were held at the O.M. Haverstock chapel and at the Hesston Christian Church this afternoon, Rev. J. N. Thomas officiated. Burial was made in the Hesston Cemetery.

Heise, Henry G. - Michigan City News May 2, 1917 - CAPTAIN HEISE DIED SATURDAY - Among Oldest and Best Known Citizens Town Marshal Many Years Affiliated for Long Period with St. John's Aid Society   Monday, April 31 Henry G. Heise, among the oldest and most prominent and well-known of Michigan City's residents died Saturday evening at the home of his son, Edward J. Heise, 122 West Second Street. Death followed a year's illness due to abdominal cancer. He lost consciousness Saturday afternoon and passed peacefully away. Mr. Heise was born June 23, 1847 in Colburg, Germany, near the Baltic Sea. At the age of seven years, he came to the United States with his parents and settled at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. From there he moved to Kenosha and a short time after, at the age of fifteen, set sail with his father and brothers for Michigan City. The boat was wrecked on the beach and its occupants had to fight for their lives to gain safety. For several years he engaged with his brothers in the fishing business in this city. He and Miss Rebecca Freeman were united in marriage in this city August 9, 1865. On August 9, 1915, they celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary with all the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren present. Surviving is the bereaved widow, one sister, Mrs. Henrietta Zieme, and the following sons and daughters: Henry A., Fred C., George F., and Edward J. Heise. Mrs. G.A. Lewis and Miss Pearl Heise. All reside in this city with the exception of George F. Heise who lives in LaPorte. There are also living two grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. For a number of terms, Mr. Heise was city marshal and was also Franklin Street bridge tender for a number of years. He was affiliated with the St. John's Aid Society and was one of its oldest members. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence. Rev. A.W. Wood, pastor of First M.E. HELD, WARNER M., - FUNERAL Herald-Argus Wed., Nov 22, 1950 Funeral services for Warner M. Held, 56, former LaPortean who lived in Chicago, and who died Monday night in a Chicago hospital, will be conducted Friday at the Giese and Kimball memorial home. The Rev. Clyde H. Lininger will officiate with burial in Pine Lake cemetery. Mr. Held, the son of Jacob C. And Matilda Wanner Held, was born in LaPorte Feb. 14, 1894. He lived here until eight years ago when he moved to Chicago where he was employed as head of engineering of the midwest office of the New Departure Manufacturing company. He was a member of the Elks club in this city, and in Moline, Ill. And also was a member of the LaPorte Hamon Gray post of the American Legion. He served in the navy during World War I. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Norman Tufteland, LaPorte; two sons, Richard W. Held, Chicago; Thomas E. Held, South Bend; four grandchildren; two sister, Mrs. Phillip Morse, Angola, and Mrs. Katherine McDougal, Phoenix, Ariz., and two brothers, Joseph F. Held, Tappa Hancock, VA, and Robert T. Helmick, John   -  Daily Herald, Thursday, August 2, 1894 - Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Helmick, twins, a son and daughter, July 25, and only a few hours previous to Mr. Helmick's departure, he passing away on the morning of the 26, being very low with consumption. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cutler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ron Devenport officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek. HICKMAN, JOSEPH – From: unknown La Porte newspaper, 27 February 1936 - The deceased was born in Richmond, Ind., Feb. 27, 1832, and came to this county when but a child. He married Josephine Hopkins and as a result of this union three children were born, but one of whom survives, Miss Nellie Hickman of this city. Mrs. Hickman had lived a retired life for many years. He was a man that commanded the respect of those who knew him and his departure will be sincerely mourned. Two sister, Mrs. Joseph Ireland of this city and Mrs. Clawson of Mt. Summit, Ind., besides three brothers, Jacob, Edgar, and Charles Hickman of this county survive the deceased. The funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 o’clock at the home of Mrs. Ireland, 1002 Maple Avenue, Dr. R. H. Hartley officiating. Burial at the Rolling Prairie cemetery. Highley, Nancy (Wilson)   - LaPorte Herald Argus Mar 25 1940, p. 2 - "Nancy E. Highley, age 91, of Logansport, formerly of LaPorte county, died Saturday night at 8:55. She was born in Galena township, this county, the daughter of Samuel and Mary Wilson. Her husband, Lafayette Highley died in 1925. Mrs. Highley was a member of the Christian church. Surviving are two nephews, Fred C. Barnes of LaPorte and Charles Barnes of Galena township. Three sisters, Mrs. Marie W. Shelton, Mrs. Mary W. Martin and Mrs. James Cutshaw, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at Cutler Brothers chapel; the Rev. Clayton Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Foster cemetery."

Highley, Rebecca   - The Daily Argus, Friday, July 29, 1898, page 8 - "Rebecca (Mrs.Wright) Highley, a pioneer of the northern section of LaPorte county, died yesterday after an illness of some days duration. She was 73 years of age, and a large family survive to mourn the loss of the aged mother. The survivors are William, Noah and LaFayette, and Mrs. Sara Mann, Lydia VanWagner, Nancy Lewis, Mary Couchman and Lavina Highley. The funeral services will be conducted tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock at the White church. An obituary will appear later. (subsequent obituary was not found) Burial in Foster Cemetery.

Highley, Wright   - The Acorn (Three Oaks, MI), Sep 13, 1902 - Another pioneer of Berrien county died Sept., 6, 1902, at the home of his daughter in Galien.
  Wright Highly was born in Virginia in 1820, and moved to this county when first settled. He lived on his farm just west of town near the Indiana line until the death of his wife in 1898, since when he has lived at the home of his daughter. Mr. Highly has been a sufferer from paralysis and heart disease for years. -    The funeral was held at the M.E. church, Galien, Tuesday, Sept. 9, interment being made at Foster's cemetery. Charles Gordon, of Three Oaks, had charge of the funeral.

Hitt, died at 7 p.m. yesterday in the Warren Clinic a few hours after suffering a cerbral hemorrhage. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Carlisle Funeral Home. Rev Floyd H Pence will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home tomorrpw evening and Saturday. Born Jan 27, 1885 in Laporte, Mrs. Hitt had been a resident of this city 40 years. She was the daughter of Albert and Cornelia Iffland Puffpaff. She was married Oct 8, 1923 in Hillsdale, Michigan to O.D. Hitt who survives. Also surviving are the following children, Mrs. Alfred Swanson, Ernest Hitt, Betty Hitt of this city, Mrs. Robert Gumbiner, Crown Point. Lenore & Dalton Hitt, Bryon Ohio, Wesley Dunkin, Edgerton, Ohio, 5 grandchildren and 3 sisters, Mrs Charles Gale, Cornelia Puffpaff and Mrs. V.A. Drout all of this city. Hitt, 80, who had been living at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Gridgeford, Lafayette, California died at 6:15 last night at John Muir Memorial Hospital, Walnut Creek, Calif. Fun serv. will be at 1:30 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home with Rev Harold Dean officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery in Laporte. Friends may call at the Funeral home from Friday afternoon. He was born Nov 22, 1886 in Byron, Ohio, to John W and Rebecca Daily Hitt. He had living here for 45 years and had resided with another daughter, Mrs. Alfred Swanson, 202 Superior St until last year. He was a retired Michiana Prod machinist. He was married July 8, 1909 to Grace March who died in 1918. He later married Luella Puffpaff on October 8, 1923 in Hillsdale, Mich. She died in 1947. He is survived by 3 sons, Dalton Hitt, Byron, Ohio; Ernest Hitt, Belmont, Calif; and Wesley Dunkin, Ft. Wayne; two other daughters, Mrs. Cyril Delisle, Byron, Ohio and Mrs Robert Gumjbiner, St. Peters Fla; 20 grandchildren and five brothers, Ira, Plymouth, Mi; Glenn, Archibald, Ohio; Clarence, Springfield and Byron, Ohio. HOCK, George R.,born June 1862, in Bohemia, Austrian Empire to George and Catherine (VOREL) HOCK who had a farm north of Rolling Prairie. George emigrated in 1878 behind his parents who emigrated in 1870. I believe he emigrated with his Uncle Frank Vorel (Wearl). George was the brother of John P. HOCK b. 1872 of Michigan City, Indiana, and the uncle of Big Al (Aloysius) and Little Al (Eligius) HOCK near Rolling Prairie and Hudson Lake areas. George R. HOCK married Cathie, b. December 1862 in Indiana. George and Cathie had three sons, and one daughter: Matthew b. December 1886, Nicholas b. January 1890 and Joseph b. December 1895, and Fannie b. 1892 according to a 1900 census record of Center Township, LaPorte, Indiana where they lived.
George died in 1948 from injures received when he was struck by a car driven by Dale Rose of near LaPorte, while crossing the street near his home. He was 87 years old when the accident happened. He died at Fairview Hospital. His funeral was officiated by Rev. E. Schumaker.

Here Dead at Ann Arbor, Mich - Was Stricken with Paralysis Pastor of St. John's Church for 26 Years--Retired Five Years Ago--76 Years Old--Leaves Widow and Five Children -
Rev. John G. Hoch died this afternoon at his home in Ann Arbor, Mich. The above mere mention of the passing of a life will come with a shock all over Michigan City. For more than a quarter of a century the Rev. M. Hoch was pastor of St. John's church, which post he relinquished five years ago last October. At that time he retired from the ministry because of his advanced years and left at once for Ann Arbor, where the family home has since been.    Rev. Mr. Hoch had been in unusually good health of late, and an announcement of his death comes with more than ordinary force because of that fact, which was known by those more closely connected with the family. Mr. Hoch's death was caused by paralysis.
  John G. Hoch was born in Werttemberg, Germany, Feb. 17, 1837, the son of Frederick and Christina Hoch. He was reared and educated in Germany, and in a special mission house in Basel, Switzerland, was prepared for the missionary to Africa. He journeyed to that far away country in February, 1863, there remaining until June, 1870, when he returned to Germany on account of his failing health.
  During the time spent in Africa the Franco-Prussian war took place and many were the thrilling scenes experienced by him during these days. He also spent a week in France, and during his stay there war was declared, and the freight vessel on which his goods were shipped was captured by the French government. In September, 1871, Rev. Hoch came to America and settled at New Buffalo, Mich., but his health still being poor, he went to Port Huron, Mich., where he regained his strength and had charge of St. John's church. From Port Huron he went to Niles where he preached the gospel for seven years, coming here in 1881 to take charge of St. John's church. As pastor of St. John's church, Rev. John Hoch had great success. He gave the best years of his life to the work of his Master in this city and under his guidance the church grew to be one of the largest in the community. He was beloved by his congregation and all who knew him admired him. His resignation as pastor was prompted by his advanced years and it was his wish that his remaining years be spent free from the cares he had shouldered for so many years. His going was a source of profound regret and the work left by him was taken up and has since been most capably handled by the Rev. Paul O'Brien, who was an assistant here to Rev. Mr. Hoch in the earlier days of St. Johns church.
  Surviving Rev. Mr. Hoch are the widow and five children, all of whom were reared here. The children are Mrs. H. Jacoby, wife of Rev. Jacoby of Elgin, Ill., Mrs. Oscar Romel of Chicago, Paul Hoch of the state of Washington, Dr. Theodore Hoch of Waverly, Mass., and Miss Helen Hoch who resides at home. All of the children were called to the bedside of their father when he was stricken. Mrs. Romel passed through the city yesterday, and this morning Mr. Romel passed through on his way to Ann Arbor. Dr. Theodore Hoch and Mrs. Jacoby were also at home when death came. Word of the death of Rev. Mr. Hoch was received by Rev. Mr. Irion in a telegram from the Ann Arbor Times-News, in response to a query this morning stating that Rev. Mr. Hoch died this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. The funeral arrangements are incomplete, but it is understood the body will be brought here for burial. Definite announcement will be made later.

Hollandsworth, Elias - La Porte Daily Herald June 12, 1914 - page 7     “Old Man Dies of Injuries"-----Elias Hollandsworth, aged 84, died from injuries sustained in a fall on a stairway, at the home of his son, Hal, at Magee, La Porte county. The aged man fell down the cellar stairs Monday night, fracturing three ribs. His condition was not regarded at critical until a few hours before the end came. Mr. Hollandsworth made his home with his son at Knox, most of the time, and only recently came to visit at Magee. He is survived by nine children, all grown. The funeral was held at Union Mills, today.
  La Porte Daily Argus-Bulletin, Thursday, June 11, 1914 - listed under "Death Record": Elias Hollandsworth: Knox Democrat: Elias Hollandsworth, the aged father of George Hollandsworth, of this city, died last evening at the home of his son, Hal, near Union Mills, La Porte county. The old gentleman, very nearly 83 years of age, fell down the cellar steps Monday evening and his death resulted from the injuries sustained in this fall. Three ribs were broken in the fall and he was also injured internally. The deceased was well-known in this city, having made his home here with his son, George, for many years, and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. The funeral will be held at Union Mills tomorrow.
    

DEATH TAKES "HICKORY DAN" HOLLANDWORTH, BUYER OF PELTS HERE – LaPorte Daily Herald Argus, Mon, May 25, 1930    Daniel Hollandsworth, age 60, better know to his many friends as "Hickory Dan," passed away at 12:45 am today at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Zora Naue, 402 H Street. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Hollandsworth, Mr. Hollandsworth was born in Brown county, Kansas, March 28, 1864, but came to this county when a small child and lived here the rest of his life. For years he was known in this vicinity as a buyer of hides and furs, in which occupation he became on of the best known men in the city. He was assistant custodian of the Fair Grounds for many years. He was married in LaPorte county on Jan. 22, 1889, to Irene Chambers, who preceded him in death May 31, 1923. Surviving besides Mrs. Naue, his daughter, are three grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Ella Koonz of Elkhart, Mrs. Belle Holderman of North Liberty and Mrs. Mary Chambers of LaPorte, and four brothers; Joe Hollandsworth of North Liberty, George Hollandsworth of Knox, John Hollandsworth of Hebron and Hall Hollandsworth of LaPorte. Funeral services will be held at the E.E. Ebbert chapel Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The body may be viewed at the undertaking parlors Tuesday evening and until time of the funeral Wednesday. The Rev. Alpha H. Kenna, pastor of the First Methodist church will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Union Mills Cemetery.

    Mrs. Irene Hollandsworth, age 62, died at her home, 402 H Street Thursday at 12:45 pm after an illness of eight months. Mrs. Hollandsworth was born in Noble township, Feb 28, 1861. Besides her husband and one daughter, Mrs. Zora Naue, both of LaPorte, she is survived by four grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters; A.L. Chambers, Seattle, Wash.; G.W. Holloman, Horace - La Porte Herald-Argus 8-18-1965 - Horace C. Holloman, 65, of 528 Walnut street, Anderson, Ind., died at 6 a. m. yesterday at Community hospital in Anderson after a week's illness. He was born Sept. 30, 1899 in Crawford county, Ga., to Mr. and Mrs. Marion J. Holloman and was a member of the Church of God in Anderson. Mr. Holloman who resided in La Porte until January of this year, joined the staff at the LaPorte sewage disposal plant at the start of its operation here and continued there until his retirement. Surviving are one son, M. Jay Holloman, Anderson; one daughter, Mrs. Jack Lane, La Porte; three grandchildren and two brothers, Guy H. and Clinton Holloman, both of Macon, Ga. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Haverstock Funeral home with the Rev. Harold Helterbridle officiating. Burial will be in Patton cemetery. Mrs. Holtz was born Feb. 26, 1917, in LaPorte and was a lifelong resident. On March 1, 1936, in LaPorte, she married Ralph Holtz. He survives with 10 daughters, Marleen Alsfasser, Sue Caddo, Deborah Holtz, all of LaPorte, Mary Rishling of Tallahassee, Fla., Cindy Eichelberg of Westville, Cathy Rogers of Michigan City, Sally Jonas of Portage, Cherie Hoover of Hanna, Judy Gearhart of Hamlet and Karin Carney of Nappanee; two sons, Jeffrey of North Liberty and Ralph "Buz" of Valparaiso; 28 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gene Raymond of LaPorte.

He was born July 19, 1912, in LaPorte, to Charles and Elizabeth (Gillham) Holtz, and had been a lifelong resident of LaPorte. Mr. Holtz was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, and Allis-Chalmers Management Club, had retired as assembly line foreman after 43 years at Allis-Chalmers Corp., was LaPorte Father of the Year in 1955, and an unsuccessful candidate for sheriff in 1955. On March 1, 1936, in LaPorte, he married Lucille Raymond, who died Sept. 5, 1992. The son of Mr. And Mrs. John Holtz, he was born Nov. 11, 1871 in Germany. He had lived in LaPorte County since he was two years old, coming from Germany. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Holtz was married Nov. 11, 1902 in Wanatah to Elizabeth Gillham who survives. The deceased belonged to the Maccabee lodge. Mr. Hooten was born in Wills township on Feb. 9, 1921 and lived here all his life. He was the son of Schuyler and Ida Bell (Wiltfong) Hooten. He was a carpenter. He was married Feb. 18, 1943 in Brownwood, Tex., to Kathryn Worthington. He was a member of the Sauktown Church of Christ. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion post at Fish Lake, the Stillwell Rod and Gun club and of the Carpenter's union. He was born June 5, 1917, in LaPorte County, to Schuyler and Ida (Reed) Hooten, and was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Hooten was a member of New Carlisle Weslyn Church and Mill Creek Arbor Gleaners. On Jan. 30, 1942, in Mill Creek he married Ethel M. Hahn, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Ann Becker and Peggy Gray of New Carlisle; two sons, Lawrence e. of New Carlisle, and Col. Robert L. Hooten of Colorado Springs, Co.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters Daphne Ketch of New Carlisle, and Barbara Viers of LaPorte; one brother, Edwin of Mill Creek. HOSTETLER, MRS. ALICE DAWSON – The Daily Argus, Mar 27, 1928 - Mrs. Alice Dawson Hostetler, age 63, of Wills township, died last night at her home following a short illness. She was born April 10, 1864, in Wills township, the daughter of Obadiah and Polly Dawson, and lived in this county all her life. She was united in marriage on April 6, 1892 to John H. Hostetler, Jessie Remley - MRS. JESSIE HOSTETLER - Mrs. Jessie Hostetler, age 69, wife of Jacob H. Hostetler of 224 Planett street, died at her home this morning shortly after 3 o'clock after an extended illness. She was born in Olive township, St. Joseph county, on Sep. 3, 1870, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Remley, and had lived here most of her life. On Dec. 14, 1892, she was married at Rolling Prairie to Mr. Hostetler, who survives. Also surviving are two brothers, Ralph E. Remley of LaPorte and J.E. Remley of Galesburg, Ill. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Standard Time, at the Sauktown church. The Rev. G.C. HOSTETLER, MABEL  - Mabel A. Hostetler, 79, of route 1, Mill Creek, died today at 4:50 am at the Anderson Nursing home. She was born in LaPorte county on May 27, 1894 to John and Alice (Dawson) Hostetler, and has lived in LaPorte county all her life. She was a member of the First Christian Church of LaPorte, and a charter member of the Wills Township Home Demonstration club circle No. 6 of the church. Survivors include, one sister, Mrs. Ethel Haverstock, of LaPorte; one niece and one nephew; and one grandniece and one grandnephew. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 pm at the Haverstock chapel, with Revs. Wallace Jones and Elmer C. Johnston officiating. Friends may call from Friday noon until the time of services. Hostetler, Polly – The LaPorte Daily Argus December 31, 1930 - COUNTY PIONEER DIES AT AGE 92 - Mrs. Polly Hostetler Born in Wills Twp., in 1838; Mrs. Polly Hostetler, 92, widow of Joseph Hostetler and a pioneer resident of LaPorte county, passed away this morning at 9 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eva Dawson, 521 Lincoln Way East. Death came to the aged and respected native of the county after a three years' illness of complications.
  The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Drollinger, Mrs. Hostetler was born in Wills township, LaPorte county January 24, 1838, shortly after the organization of the county, and lived in this vicinity all her life, with the exception of a few winters spent in Florida. She was one of a family of 13 children. She was married at her home in Wills township on September 10, 1854 to Joseph Hostetler, who preceded her in death in 1915. She had resided with her daughter for the last three years. Mrs. Hostetler was a member of the Brethren church of North Liberty. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Sarah M. Jarrell of Tyner, Mrs. Eva Dawson of LaPorte and Mrs. Mabel Miller of Mill Creek; four sons, Joseph Albert Hostetler of Miami, Fla., John W. and Gabriel A. Hostetler of Mill Creek and David M. Hostetler of New Carlisle, and two brothers, Quinby Drollinger of South Bend and George Drollinger of Mill Creek. Four children preceded her in death, a daughter passing away only four months ago. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Sauktown church, the Rev. M.G. Long, pastor of the LaPorte First Christian church officiating. The body may be viewed at the home of Mrs. Dawson from Thursday afternoon until 10 o'clock Saturday morning. Burial will be in Sauktown cemetery with O.M. Haverstock in charge. Hostettler, Walter H. - La Porte Daily Herald, Friday June 2, 1911 - Walter H. Hostettler, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Hostettler, who was badly crushed in the caving in of a wall at the Sauktown church, which was undergoing repair, as fully detailed in The Herald Wednesday, died at 7 o'clock last night at the Holy Family hospital. Little hope was entertained for him from the first. The lad was born June 15, 1905, in Galena. He is survived by the parents, four brothers and three sisters. One sister died last January. The funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the home in Galena township. Rev. Mr. Franklin of the Christian church at New Carlisle will officiate, and the burial will take place at the Sauktown cemetery, with Weir, Sievert & Schweitzer in charge.

Hostetler, 96, who lived for 52 years in the Studebaker park area, St. Joseph county, before going to South Bend 21 years ago, died at 9:23 pm Friday at the Dor-A-Lin Nursing home, South Bend. He was born in LaPorte county on March 14, 1873 to Joseph and Polly (Drollinger) Hostetler. He was married in New Hamburg, Ontario, Canada, on April 4, 1906 to Katherine (Maude) Berdux who died Sept. 6, 1953. He was a member of Sauktown Church of Christ and Farm Bureau. Surviving are three sons, David, New Carlisle; Owen, in California; Ace, Denver, Colo; five daughters, Mrs. Polly Wilkinson, South Bend; Mrs. Sarah Morrison, Phoenix, Ariz; Mrs. Alice Fishburn, Elkhart; Mrs. Eva G. He was born Feb. 28, 1919 in Mill Creek, to Gabriel and Maggie (Bunton) Hostetler. He had resided in Mill Creek most of his life. He was a member of Sauktown Church of Christ and was a retired farmer. Surviving are two brothers, Gerald, of Rolling Prairie, and John, of Walkerton, and one sister Mary Jane Haag, of New Carlisle. He was a member of the Sauktown Christian church and an elder of that church. Henry Hostettler, age 84, of New Carlisle died at the home of his son, James A., in New Carlisle, Wednesday afternoon at 3:30, it was learned today. He was ill one year. Mr. Hostettler was born in Pennsylvania December 12, 1842. He lived in this part of the state since early boyhood. He was a farmer. Mr. Hostettler married Nancy May. The deceased man is survived by six sons, George, James, and Joseph A., of New Carlisle, Jacob of Walkerton, J.D. Hostettler of Elkhart and Llewelyn of South Bend; two daughters, Aretta Stoner of Rolling Prairie and Nannie Jones of South Bend; one brother, Ben Hostettler of Abelene, Kans. Hostetler, Jessie Remley - The LaPorte Daily Herald Argus, Friday, 8 Sep 1939 - The only child of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Horner, of Springfield township, a girl about fifteen years old died April 21, 1887, and was buried in the Heckman graveyard at the Christian church in Heston. The services were conducted by Elder Thomas Webster. The sympathy of the neighborhood go with Mr. and Mrs. H. Horner.

Hostetler, Joseph – The Daily Herald, Tuesday, January 12, 1915 p7 - ANOTHER PIONEER PASSES INTO BEYOND - Joseph Hostetler passed away this morning at 4:30 o'clock after an illness of five months, having been confined to his bed four months. He had a stroke of apoplexy August 15, last, which was followed a month later with a stroke of paralysis. Last Saturday night he had another stroke from which he never rallied nor regained consciousness, passing peacefully away this morning.
 He was born in Somerset county, Pa., January 4, 1829, being 86 years, one week and one day old. Surviving him are his aged wife, two sisters and two brothers, and 8 children, Mary A. Clark, Joseph A. Hostetler, Sarah M. Jarrell, John W. Hostetler, Bariel W. Hostetler, David M. Hostetler, Eva A. Dawson and Mabel Miller. Besides these, there are 29 grandchildren and two great grandchildren and a large number of relatives and friends. He was one of LaPorte county's pioneer residents, moving here at the age of 14, and has since lived here. In life he has been very successful and yet his prosperity has come to him as the just reward of his own perseverance, economy and well directed industry. He has long been accorded a lace among the prominent farmers of the county.

He was born March 5, 1868 in St. Joseph county to Henry and Nancy (May) Hostetler and had lived in New Carlisle all his life. Mr. Hostetler was a retired farmer and a member of the Olive Chapel Congregational church and Maccabee lodge. He was married April 4, 1894 in Rolling Prairie to Minnie B. Haverstock. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Marvin Bennitt, Rolling Prairie; Mrs. Spencer Dalton, South Bend; Mrs. John H. Miller, LaPorte; and Mrs. Ann H. Carlson, Chicago; two sons, Schuyler and Allen C. Hostetler, Herrin, Ill.; one brother, Marion L. Hostetler, South Bend; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death in 1938. Funeral services will be at 1:30 Saturday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bennitt, Rolling Prairie, and at 2 o'clock at the Olive Chapel Congregational church with the Rev. HOSTETLER, MRS. MINNIE – LaPorte County Museum in LaPorte, LaPorte, IN. (1938) - Mrs. Minnie B. Hostetler, 65, wife of Joseph A. Hostetler of rural rout No. 2, New Carlisle, passed away yesterday afternoon shortly after 1 o'clock in the Holy Family Hospital after an illness of six days. She was born in Wills township near Rolling Prairie, May 17, 1873, the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Haverstock. She was married April 11, 1894. Mrs. Hostetler was a member of Olive chapel, the Ladies Aid and Missionary society of the church. Surviving are her husband; two sons, Schuyler, at home, and Claire of South Bend; four daughters, Mrs. Marvin Bennitt of Rolling Prairie, Mrs. Spencer Dalton of South Bend, Mrs. John Miller of LaPorte and Mrs. Roy Carlson of Chicago; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Frame of Rolling Prairie and Mrs. James A. Hostetler of New Carlisle, and two brothers Henry Haverstock of Conway Springs, Kan., and William Haverstock of LaPorte. Two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon with a private service in the home at 1:30 and a public service in Olive chapel at 2 o'clock. The Rev. The daughter of Schuyler and Ida Hooten, she was born in Wills township, LaPorte county, on March 24, 1910 and had lived in this vicinity all her life. Housman, Zaick Mrs.  - Michigan City News Pg 1 April 8th 1935    Fatally Hurt While Cooking Dinner
Mrs Zaick Housman Showered with Flames in Explosion
    Third degree burns sustained early yesterday afternoon in a kerosene explosion proved fatal late last night to Mrs Zaick Housman, 49, of 318 Center Street.
She passed away in the Clinic Hospital. Little hope had been held for the women’s recovery although she was conscious when brought to the hospital in the Carlisle ambulance. She lapsed into a Coma shortly afterward and never rallied, dying about 11:30 o'clock. Hospital attendants reported Mrs Housman was burned over her entire body, arms and head. An investigation by Fire Chief Irvin C. Bauman revealed that the women apparently started to build a fire in the kitchen stove about 12:30 o'clock preparatory to cooking Sunday dinner. Evidently ignorant of hot coals in the stove, she poured approximately a pint of kerosene on the fuel and struck a match which ignited the fumes. Flames jumped out of the stove and set fire to a bathrobe the women was wearing. Adrian Bowmar, 8, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Bowmar, 320, Center Street, was in the house with Mrs Housman at the time. When he saw the fire, he ran to his mother and informed her. Mrs. Bowmar quickly spread the alarm, calling the fire department and ambulance.
Meanwhile other neighbors wrapped Mrs. Housman in a blanket extinguishing the flames but not before they had inflicted the burns which later proved fatal. There was no fire in the house and no other damage was done. Except for the Bowmar boy, Mrs. Housman was alone in the house at the time. Coroner Daniel G. Bernoske said the inquest will be held Wednesday. The victim was born Nov. 18, 1885 in Sunville, PA. the daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth Pollard. Mrs Housman formerly resided in Hammond but lived here for the past 17 years.
She was married 10 years ago in Michigan City to Zaick Housman who survives. The other survivors are a sister Mrs. Francis Miller, of this city, and five brothers, Charles Pollard of Hamilton, OH., Amos and John, of Hammond and James and Clinton of this city. Mrs. Housman was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary.
Private funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon in the Wilber Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Rev. D.C. Ford, of the First Christian Church, and Rev. A.E. Bagby, of the First Methodist Church, will officiate. Friends may view the remains Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday up until the hour of the funeral.

Houston, Oliver - LaPorte Herald Argus about 1955 - Oliver Houston Oliver Houston, 67, of Alhambra Calif.., husband of the former Dr. Grace Line Homan of LaPorte, died at 8:30 Sunday night at their home in Alhambra. He had been ill for one year. Mr. Houston was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 1 Jan., 1888. He and Dr. Homan were married at Ventura, Calif., on April 21, 1933. He was a member of the Methodist church. His wife survives. Funeral services will take place at the Cutler Funeral home here at 3:30 Friday with the Rev. Eugene R. Balsley officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery. Friends may call at the Cutler chapel tomorrow night until the time of services.

Howell, John - d. 17 Apr 1940 - John Howell passes away on Wednesday John Howell, for many years a resident of Brook, died at his home on Wednesday morning, after an illness of several months, of an acute heart ailment. He was born in Morocco on February 6th 1872, and had lived in Newton County practically all of his life. He came to Brook in 1907, and has resided here with the exception of one year until his death. He has always conducted a blacksmith shop, but was a skilled mechanic, who adapted his work to the changed conditions that brought in mechanized machinery. He was married on October 28th 1895 , to Rosetta Baker, who with the following children survive him: Howard, Paul, and Henry of Brook, Mrs. Nora Cory of Hessville, Ind. , Martin of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Mary Laird of Morocco, and Mrs. Martha Strain of Brook. The funeral will be held in the home at 1pm on Saturday, with the Rev. Reed officiating and burial will be in the Union Mills cemetery, near LaPorte, where his parents and children are buried.

Howell, Walter - died July 7, 1961 - Walter Howell - LaPorte, Indiana - Walter Howell, 80, R R 1, New Buffalo, Mich., died at his home at 8 P.M. Saturday.
  Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Haverstock Funeral Home. Burial will be in Springfield Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home fomr this evening .
  Mr. Howell was born in White County, Ind., Feb. 17, 1881 and had lived in the New Buffalo area 15 years. Prior to that he lived in LaPorte County.

Hubert, John - La Porte Herald Argus, Monday, 24 Dec 1951 - CORONER'S INQUEST IN HUBERT DEATH CONTAINS NO PROSECUTION COUNT - A coroner's inquest ordered by Dr. Russell Beck, county coroner, in the death of John Hubert, of route 1, New Buffalo, resulted in a recommendation for no prosecution. Beck termed the death accidental and said there was not enough evidence against Raymond Koontz, 27, of South Bend, Hubert's alleged attacker, to warrant a case of homicide. Koontz was released from $500 bond, connecting him in the death on a charge of assault and battery, the sheriff's department said. The coroner's inquest ruled that Hubert died of a brain concussion which he received as the result of a street fight in Westville more than two weeks ago. The concussion was caused by his head striking a cement curb and not by the blows of his alleged attacked, it was ruled.

Hudson, David - Chapman's History of LaPorte County, Indiana - 1880, p. 704-5 - David Hudson was born in Madison county, N.Y. in 1821, the son of Richard and Maria Hudson, natives of the same State, who emigrated to Michigan in 1836 and to this county in 1837. David's father died in 1851, and his mother in 1876. He was reared on the farm, and soon after his majority he went into the lumber business for several years. He is at present giving his entire attention to farming. Through Mr. H.'s efforts, Hatch's Mills post office was located in this tp., in 1876, though the mail was not carried over the route until 1877. J.B. Birchim is the present postmaster. Mr. Hudson married Miss Louisa Marston in 1845, who was born in New York in 1825; and of their 6 children 3 are living; Ellen (Hatch), Harvey and Nettie. Mr. H. has been Master of the Masonic lodge. He is the owner of one of the best farms of this twp., containing 180 acres, on sec. 21. P.O. Hatch's Mills.

Hudson , Mrs. David Michigan City News December 7, 1898, Page 8, Col. 3 - "An Early Settler Gone" The death of Mrs. David Hudson is reported from Galena township. Mrs. Hudson died Tuesday night. She was a native of New York state, was 67 years of age, and came to this county in 1840. Burial in Foster Cemetery.

HUFFMAN, DAVID – From: The La Porte Argus-Bulletin, 12 November 1903 - David Huffman was born in Ohio December 26, 1823. He was married to Jemima Helmick November 2, 1848. He died November 9, 1903, aged 79 years. He had been a resident of Rolling Prairie and vicinity for over fifty years. He was a member of the M. E. church, Masonic lodge and the Grand Army of the Republic. In his younger days he was a great worker in the church and Sunday school. He was always faithful to his lodge, filling various offices with credit to himself and the fraternity. At the beginning of the late rebellion he enlisted in Co. G., 9th Illinois cavalry. His record in the army, for over three years, was an enviable one. He had the respect and confidence of his officers in such a degree that he was many times entrusted with important dispatches which required nerve and skill to deliver. His love for the grand army was sincere and his comrades of Hathaway Post will greatly miss him. His wife preceded him to the better land in April 1900. He leaves three sisters, one in Missouri, one in Nebraska, and one, Christiana Helmick of this place. Funeral services were held November 11th, Rev. Waite, officiating. The Masonic lodge had charge. Hathaway post attended as an organization. Burial at Rolling Prairie.

Huffman, John D. - La Porte Herald Argus, December 24, 1932, page 2 - Funeral services for John D. Huffman, 66, of Mill Creek, who died early yesterday at his home, will be held Monday at 2 o'clock at the Sauktown school. The Rev. Mr. Seaverson of the Community church at New Carlisle will officiate and burial will be in the Sauktown cemetery. Mr. Huffman was born Feb. 17, 1866 in Clinton county, Ohio, but had lived in Wills township for 25 years. On Sept. 2, 1892, he was united in marriage to Amelia Kootz (sp) of Hutchinson, Kansas. He is survived by his widow and six children, Earl, Jay, Ralph of South Bend, Mrs. Gladys Teeter of New Carlisle, Bernice and Sybil, at home. Huffman, Mrs. Amelia Koontz - La Porte Herald Argus, Thursday, Feb 6, 1941, page 4 - Funeral services for Mrs. Amelia Koontz Huffman, 65, of South Bend, who died Tuesday afternoon after several months' illness, will be held at the Sauktown church at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, the Rev. Van W. Hinckley of the River Park Methodist church, South Bend, and the Rev. G.C. Rambo of the Sauktown church officiating. Burial will be in the Sauktown cemetery. The body may be viewed at the residence, 1023 South 26th street, South Bend, until time for the funeral. Mrs. Huffman was born in Alsace-Lorraine Aug. 21, 1875 but had lived in South Bend for 43 years. She was the widow of John Huffman. Surviving are three sons, Earl E., Jay, and Ralph Huffman, all of South Bend; three daughters, Mrs. Gladys Teeter of New Carlisle; Mrs. Bernice Graves, Mill Creek, and Mrs. Sybil Graves, Plymouth; six sisters, Mrs. Ida Swarthout and Mrs. Lloyd Wiltfong, both of La Porte; Mrs. William Cantwell, of Hutchinson, Kansas.; Mrs. Charles Harrell of Smockover, Ark.; Mrs. Tillie Phillips of Hutchinson, and Miss Bertha Koontz, Los Angeles; one brother, Edward Koontz, Caddac, Colo. One daughter preceded her in death.

Father, Alfred Huhnke, and 4 Others Survive Auto Struck at Main Crossing by Pennslylvania Flyer, Funeral Saturday
    One of La Porte county's worst railroad crossing tragedies yesterday afternoon at 5:10 in Hanna cost the lives of Mrs. Alfred Huhnke, 40, and four of her eight children.
  Victims of an eastbound Pennsylvania railroad flyer at the main crossing in the town were: Mrs. Huhnke, 40; Rosalie May, 12; Ruth Ann, 10; LeRoy 8; Arlene Louis, 4. All resided on the Huhnke farm a mile and a half east of Hanna and a quarter of a mile north of U.S. Road 30.
  The tragedy which wiped out half of the Huhnke family, the father and four older children surviving, increased the county's traffic toll to date in 1945 to 12 persons. Mrs. Huhnke and her children were driving to the Hanna post office for their mail when the accident happened, a trip they often made about the same time. They had come westward along U.S. Road 30 in their 1941 sedan and at the main crossing in Hanna Mrs. Huhnke turned south to cross the tracks to the post office. Strangely enough, there were no witnesses to the accident, according to Dr. H.A. Garner, Hanna physician and deputy coroner, who investigated. A number of persons heard the crash and came to the crossing to see what had happened. The Huhnke car when hit by the locomotive became wedged in the latter under the cylinder on the left side and the demolished auto was carried a half mile eastward before the train could be brought to a halt. According to Deputy Coroner Garner, Mrs. Huhnke and Arlena were thrown from the car and instantly killed. The body of the woman was found approximately 200 feet east of the crossing and that of the girl approximately 300 feet east of the crossing. The other three victims were in the wreckage and war carried along the track. Persons who reached the wreckage found LeRoy and Ruth Ann still alive. Dr. Garner took the girl in his car and hurried to the Holy Family hospital here, where she died at 6:15 last night. Clarence Smith placed LeRoy in his car, but the boy died before the hospital was reached, according to Dr. Garner. The main crossing in Hanna is protected by flasher lights, which were presumably working, according to the deputy coroner, although no one saw the accident. A watchman is also on duty daily until 4 p.m. At this crossing there have been a number of fatalities in recent years, it is reported. The mother, whose maiden name was Christina Burlingham, was born in La Porte county, June 25, 1904. On April 15, 1927 she was married to Alfred Huhnke. They lived for some years in Johnson township, near Walkerton. Mr. Huhnke was the winner of the county corn-husking championship several times.
   Mrs. Huhnke was president of the W.S.C.S. of the Hanna Methodist church, was a member of the church, of the Hanna Grange and of the township Home Economics Club. Rosalie May was born in Johnson township, Feb 17, 1933. She was a member of the Hanna Methodist church and Sunday school and of the township 4-H club. Ruth Ann was born Dec. 2, 1934 in Johnson township. She belonged to the Sunday school and the 4-H club. LeRoy Raymond was born Jan. 2, 1937 at Hanna. He belonged to the Sunday school, as did Arlena Lois, born at Hanna, Aug. 19, 1940.
  Surviving the victims are the father; one daughter, Helen Lu, 17; three sons, Kenneth, 16, LaMar, 14; Alfred, Jr., 14. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the Hanna Methodist church, the Rev. J.A. Gardner of Hamlet officiating. Burial will be in the Kingsbury cemetery with Kosanke Brothers of Union Mills in charge.

Hunt, Clara R. Daily Herald - Friday, March 11, 1898 - Clara R. Hunt, daughter of Jeptha and Christina Hunt, was born near Rolling Prairie, this county, Nov. 5, 1881 and died Mar 1, 1898, aged 16 years, 8 months and 24 days.  
  She was a victim of tuberculosis of the lungs. Young, energetic, ambitious, Clara fought the disease bravely and uncomplainingly and not until the school that she had been a regular attendant, closed in December for a short vacation did she realize that she must give up the unequal contest.
   Clara was loveable. She was good and true. Although desirous of living that she might become a useful woman, she met her fate calmly and with perfect resignation. She was willing and not afraid to meet her Savior.
    Tenderly she kissed her loved ones good bye and bade them a found farewell.
    She leaves a father, mother, one sister and three brothers, besides a host of friends to mourn for her. he funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Baptist church, Rolling Prairie, Rev G. B. VanArsdall, of the New Carlisle Church of Christ, officiating.
    He spoke from the text that Clara had selected. "Let not your heart be troubled:"
    Her favorite hymns were sung and her favorite school mates carried her to her last resting place to the cemetery near the church.

Hunt, George - -Grave of George Hunt b.Aug 17th, 1775 (he was the Son of Charles Hunt, and Grandson of Col. Jonathan Hunt) George was born at the Bryan Settlement on the Yadkin River in N.Carolina, ( he was most Likely baptised by Rev.Lazarus Whitehead,i) as his family attended the Eaton Baptist Church there at that time,- His Grandfather COl.Jonathan Hunt is burried in the Church yard Cem. - The Boone family (Children & Nieces & Nephews of Daniel Boone, would have also been attending the Church during this time Period). - He Married the Daugther of Rev.Laz.Whitehead, and Martha (Bryan)Whitehead, probably at the Elkhorn Bap.Church in Wayne Co, Ind. which was founded by Laz.Whitehead in 1806. (their famillies were in Wayne County, Ind. by the time of their marriage.) - Her name was Martha Whitehead, and she was born b. 1785, (I believe she is also buried next to him in the Bap.Cem). Their Children were - Rebecca Bryan Hunt, (named after Daniel's wife), Mary Hannah Hunt, Franklin Whitehead Hunt, John Mason Hunt, Martha A. Hunt, and William Hale Hunt, (Most of their children are also buried in the Old Bap.Cem.) - The Boone Family lived on Squire Boone (Daniel's Fathers) land about 2 miles south of the Eaton Bap.Church, at the Bryan Settlement, while Col. Jonathan Hunts' family lived about 2 miles north of the Eaton Bap.Church. // - George Hunt's Father - Charles Hunt is buried at the Elkhorn Creek Settlement in Wayne Co, Ind.
George Hunt, b. 1775 and buried in this Baptist Cemetery, he was commissioned as Brigadier General Under the Command of William Henry Harrison during the War of 1812. In 1809 he was nominated to the Congressional Delegation before Indiana was a State. In 1810 he was the First Surveyor & Clerk of Wayne Co, Indiana.

Anne Shotwell, was also born in N.Carolina. She died September 11, 1839.
James' was one of 14 Hunt Children, of Charles & Francina Hunt. - He came to LaPorte County with his 2 brothers, George and William, who are also burried in the Old Baptist Cem, (from Wayne County, Indiana) - his Sister Sarah Hunt married Jonathan Bryan (the 1st cousin of Rebecca (Bryan) Boone ) - His Brother John Hunt, married Polly Whitehead, the Daughter of Laz.Whitehead i, (they were the first Couple married in Wayne Co, Indiana - See History of Wayne County, Ind.)

HUNT, KATE  -  The LaPorte Herald-Argus April 29, 1935     Mrs. Kate Hunt, 54, died at 6:00 A.M. today, April 29, 1935 at her home in Mill Creek after an illness of three days. She was born June 30, 1880 in Wills Township, the daughter of Jacob and Martha Stoner. She lived in the township her entire life. On June 30, 1900 she was united in marriage at Rolling Prairie to John C. Hunt, who survives her. Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter, Neva May Keen, three sons, J. Paul, Bloomington, Ind., Kenneth A. now in Alaska, Roy L. at home, five grandchildren, five brothers, Andrew Stoner, Ellsworth Stoner, Walter Stoner, David Stoner, all of Rolling Prairie and Vernon Stoner of LaPorte, on sister, Mrs. Ettie Dudley, Rolling Prairie. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30, Standard time at the home, the Rev. Clayton H. Wilson officiating. Burial will be Oak Grove Cemetery with O.M. Haverstock in charge. The body may be viewed from Tuesday morning until time for the funeral.

HUNT, JOHN C. – The LaPorte Herald-Argus October 5, 1935   John C. Hunt, 57, of Mill Creek, rural route 1, died yesterday noon, October 4, 1935 after an illness of five months. He was born June 12, 1878 in Wills Township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hunt, and had lived in the township his entire life.
  Mr. Hunt died suddenly in a field on the farm yesterday. Dr. Daniel G. Berneske, county coroner, was called and said he had succumbed from natural causes.
  He was united in marriage June 30, 1900 to Kate Stoner at Rolling Prairie. She preceded him in death April 29, 1935. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Neva Keen, of Rolling Prairie, three sons, J. Paul Hunt of LaPorte attorney, Kenneth A. Hunt on his way home from Alaska, and Roy L. Hunt at home, five grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Ross, LaPorte.
  Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 at the home, the Rev. Clayton H. Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery with O. M. Haverstock in charge. The remains may be viewed at the home from 4 o’clock today until time for the funeral.

Hutchinson, Dorothy - 5/19/1997 in News Dispatch, Michigan City, IN     SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP - Dorothy A. Hutchinson, 87, of Springfield Township, died at 8:22 a.m. Wednesday (May 7, 1997) in Lenox, Mich. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Capt. Richard McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and until the time of service Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Hutchinson was born June 1, 1909, in LaPorte, the daughter of Harry W. and Ada Bessie Euler Reed. On Oct. 23, 1926, in Michigan City, she married Edward Hutchinson, who preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 1990. Surviving are two sons, Dan and Frank Hutchinson, both of Michigan City; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. A son, Harold Hutchinson, two grandchildren, and two brothers, all preceded her in death. Mrs. Hutchinson was a homemaker and was a member of the Salvation Army Golden Agers of LaPorte. Hutson, Ben Buford - Michigan City News - 21 July 1907    African Buried With Honor    Former slave and one colored resident of Westville, died, Saturday, July 20. Westville's entire colored population passed away this week in the death of Ben Buford Hutson, a relic of the slave days in the south. He was born in Kentucky and was held by the Buford family, a part of the aristocracy of that section.  He was carefully trained and was in many respects an exemplary member of his class, retaining to the close of a long life a diction of language and a probity and dignity of character which reflected credit on Mareo (or Marec) and Misses Buford. Ben's heart never left the south, though he came north about the time of the civil war. For some years he filled position of butler in a Chicago family coming to this vicinity with the Dunlaps at the time the moved to a farm a few miles southwest of Michigan City in the edge of Porter county. The Dunlaps were war refugees from Kentucky and in what was then almost a wilderness they cased to be erected a residence of more than ordinary pretentions.   Few private houses in the larger cities were more spacious and ornate in decoration, though financial troubles intervened before the plans were fully consummated. Ben Buford was a part of the debris. He married and led a precarious existence in the vicinity since. The burial took place Friday at the Eight Square Cemetery, funeral services being held in W. Jeromes yard. Appropriate words were spoken by Sylvester Bertram and a choir sang. The casket was heaped with flowers. The Westville Indicator says " Our people did honor to themselves in giving tender and decent burial to one who was a child grown old and whose life lay in much sorrow". Burial in Eight Square Cemetery.

Hutton, Madeline C. - News Dispatch - Michigan City, IN - 10/8/1997    EL PASO, Texas - Madeline C. Hutton, 85, of El Paso, formerly of LaPorte, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 1997) at Horizon Healthcare in El Paso. The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Haverstock Funeral Chapel, LaPorte, with Dr. W. William Wimberly II officiating. Burial will follow at the Door Village Cemetery, LaPorte. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Hutton was born April 21, 1912, in LaPorte, the daughter of Walter and Catherine Iselman Johnson. On May 26, 1936, in LaPorte, she married Lee J. Hutton, who preceded her in death on Dec. 30, 1966. She is survived by two daughters, Kathryn P. Hutton, Santa Fe, N.M., and Marcelline J. Hutton, El Paso; a son, Walter L. Hutton, Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Vendla Kleca, Florida, and Marcelline Breese, LaPorte; and two brothers, Kenny Johnson, Walkerton, Ind., and Owen Johnson, Florida. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Johnson and Gladys Keller, and one brother, Walter Johnson. Mrs. Hutton resided in El Paso for four years, coming from LaPorte. She was a baker and clerk for 15 years at Lorraine's Bakery Shop. She was a member and deacon of the Presbyterian Church of LaPorte, and of the women's group of the church. HYATTE, BLANCHE RUTH  - The Daily Argus, Friday, Apr 18, 1947, pg. 4. - Mrs. Blanch Ruth Hyatte, 39, of route 1 Rolling Prairie, died at 7:50 o'clock this morning at her home, after an illness of seven months. The daughter of Alonzo and Rose Etta Cavinder, she was born in Rensselaer, Ind., on March 4, 1908 and had lived here for 30 years, coming from Rensselaer. On June 29, 1929 at Kontz Lake she was married to Walter Hyatte, who survives. She was a member of the Galena Baptist church. Also surviving are two daughters, Lois and Jean, and one son Richard Lee at home; two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Biggs, Detroit and Mrs. Bethel Swearingen, Canyon City, Colo.; four brothers, Emery, Hopkins, Mich.; Milton, New Buffalo, Mich.; Lawrence of LaPorte and Cloyde, LaPorte. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Haverstock chapel, with the Rev. Earl D. Umbaugh officiating. Burial will be in Patton cemetery. Friends may call Sunday noon at the chapel and until time of funeral

Hyatte, Walter – The LaPorte Herald Argus, Mon, April 26, 1993, pg. 16 - Mr. Walter L. Hyatte, 85, of 200 Linden Drive, Laporte, died Saturday, April 24, 1993, at 10:30 am at 12655S CR-600W in Hanna. He was born March 6, 1908, in Hamlet, to Abraham and Edith (Berg) Hyatte, and was a LaPorte resident for 66 years coming from Knox. Mr. Hyatte was a member of Grace Baptist Church, and a retired foremen after 10 years service with the LaPorte Park Department. On June 29, 1928, in LaPorte, he married Blanche Cavinder who died. On Feb. 14, 1951, in Michigan City, he married Elsie Knox, who died April 29, 1990. Surviving are three daughters, Lois Kurpiel of LaPorte, Joan Sims of Scottsboro, Ala., and Mary Shedrow of Knox; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Elmer of Hobart, Ind., and Ira of Monon, Ind. He was preceded in death by one son, Richard; three granddaughters; two sisters, and one brother. The funeral will be at 1 pm Tuesday at Haverstock Funeral home with Rev. Donald Kakaveccos officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 pm today and until the service Tuesday. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery.
