Gale, Charles C. - Mich. City News Dispatch Aug 29, 1952     C.C. Gale -- Fun. Services for Charles C. Gale, 68, Edgewood, who died yesterday will be at 2 p.m. Tues in the First Christian Church with Rev. Donald C. Ford officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery, Laporte. Friends may call at the Carlisle Fun Home Mon afternoon and eve. The body will be taken to the church at noon on Tues and may be viewed there until the hour of service. Mr. Gale, a local realtor was b. Sept 6, 1883 at Angola In the son of Richard R. and Eliz (Rakestraw) Gale. On Sept 30, 1914 in this city, he married Edna Puffpaff, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Charles, Jr. and Richard, three grandchildren and two brothers. The deceased was a member of the First Chr. Church and Acme Lodge No 83 F & AM. He was an elder emeritus of the church.

Gambill, William - 9/20/2001 Michigan City News Dispatch      ROLLING PRAIRIE — William J. Gambill, 73, Rolling Prairie, died at 6 a.m. Monday (Sept. 17, 2001) at his home. He was an area resident for 40 years. The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Springville Cemetery, LaPorte. Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation. Haverstock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born Feb. 29, 1928, in Sullivan, Ind., to Charles A. and Ethel (Louellin) Gambill. Survivors include one daughter, Susan (Michael) Arvay, LaPorte; two sisters, Norma (Lawrence) Mick, Portage, Ind., and Virginia Crabill, Terre Haute, Ind.; one brother, Walter (Tony) Jack Gambill, Michigan City; sister-in-law Pauline Gambill, Phoenix, Ariz.; companion Lou Rice, New Carlisle, Ind.; two grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. Also preceding Mr. Gambill in death were two sisters, Margaret Tryon and Ruth Bennett; and three brothers, Levi Gambill, Paul Gambill, and Harry Gambill. Mr. Gambill worked as an electrician for the Indiana Toll Road, retiring after 21 years. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Air Force. Mr. Gambill was a life member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 9423 of Rolling Prairie, and the VFW of Michigan City. He was also a life member of the American Legion and of VFW National Homes. Gardner, Cinderella (Rhodes) – Michigan City Evening Dispatch, March 30, 1926     Following an illness extending over a period of several weeks, Mrs. Cinderella Gardner died at 3 o’clock on Monday afternoon at St. Anthony’s hospital. Death was due to cancer. Mrs. Gardner was born at Bloomington, Ill., on Aug 15, 1851. She was married to Michael Gardner, who preceded her in death several years ago. Surviving are two children: Mrs. Louis A. Godin of Galena township and Lewis T. Gardner of Oakland, Cal. A brother, Samuel Rhodes of Bloomington, Ill., also survives. Funeral services fro Mrs. Gardner will be held at 1 o’clock on Thursday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Louis A. Godin (Heckman residence), Galena township. Burial will be in the Hickman (s/b Heckman) cemetery. Rev. Donald C. Ford will officiate. Mrs. Gardner has always lived in Bloomington, Ill., until a short time ago when she came here to make her home with her daughter.

Garman, Rosa B. (Teeter) - La Porte Daily Herald Argus, Wed, 17 Feb 1932     Mrs. Rosa B. Garman - Funeral Services for Mrs. Rosa B. Garman, age 78, who passed away at her home in Galena township north of Rolling Prairie, Monday, will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, Dr. Edwin W. Dunlavey of Chicago officiating. Burial will be in Rolling Prairie Cemetery.
 The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. Teeter, Mrs. Garman was a member of one of the LaPorte county pioneer families. She was born on Feb 21, 1853, in the home in which she spent her entire life. She was an active member of the Rolling Prairie Methodist Church.
  Surviving are three sons Harry O. Garman, a consulting engineer, of Indianapolis, Commodore W. Garman, professor of science at a state college at Stroudsburg, Pa., and Cleveland, G. Garman of Chicago; two daughter, Mrs. Phoebe C. Sprecker of Independence, Wis., and Mrs. Georgianna Franck of Brookfield, Ill., a brother Edwin J. Teeter of LaPorte and two grandchildren, Harry Hanly Garman and Helen Louise Garman, children of Mr. and Mrs. Harry O Garman. Noah Garman, husband preceded in death. He was a member of the Indiana Legislature and one of the county's well known farmers.

Mr. Gaw was born in Starke county on July 30, 1876 to John and Christine (Menser) Gaw. He lived in LaPorte for three months, coming from Salem Heights, State Road 4. He was married in South Bend on Nov. 30, 1901 to Pearl Beam, who preceded him in death. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Wanda Shook, Westville; one son, William E. Gaw, LaPorte; one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, one sister, and one brother. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday at the Haverstock Funeral home, the Rev. John Mull officiating. Burial will be in Kingsbury cemetery. Geltenbort, Ernestine L. - Source: La Porte Herald Argus, March 24, 1927 - Ernestine L. Geltenbort, age 56, wife of Henry J. Geltenbort, 405 C street, died at her home this morning. Mrs. Geltenbort was born in Cook county, Illinois, July 19, 1870. She had lived here for 29 years, moving here from Chicago. On Oct. 27, 1898 she was married to Mr. Geltenbort. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran church. The decedent is survived by her husband, her mother, Mrs. Martin Schram, of Woodworth, Ill., four sisters and a number of nephews and nieces. Short funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon after which services will be held at St. John's church at 2:30. The Rev. Paul Eickstaedt will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery in charge of E.E. Ebbert. The body may be viewed at the residence Friday evening.

George, Frank -  Oct. 1, 1928 Frank George Funeral services for Frank George, who died Wednesday in South Bend, were held Friday morning at the Methodist Church, the Rev. C. Schumaker of South Bend officiating. H.C. Wolcott sang several selections with Ruth Teeter as accompanist. Interment was in the Rolling Prairie cemetery.

GEORGE, SARAH A. - La Porte Daily Herald, 11 April 1899    Miss Sarah A. George died at the residence of her brother W. H. A. George, 427 North Main street, at 12:10 o’clock today of heart disease and paralysis of which he had been a sufferer for about one year, says Monday’s South Bend Tribune. Her condition was not serious, however, until last Monday. The deceased was born in Lehigh county, Penn., March 17, 1839. In 1852, at the age of 14 she accompanied her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Solomon George, to LaPorte county where she had since made her home. She had been in South Bend several times to receive medical treatment, her last trip to this city being made Jan. 16. With the exception of her brother she is survived by no near relatives. The funeral will take place at Rolling Prairie tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. The burial will be in the cemetery of that place.

Gillham, Ethel May – July 25, 1977 LaPorte Herald Argus     “Ethel May Gillham, 76, of 1515 Jefferson Ave., died at 6:55 a.m. today at LaPorte Hospital. She was born Aug. 7, 1900, in Kankakee Township, LaPorte County to Walter and Sadie M. (Nichols) Holloway and had lived here all her life. She was married Nov. 5, 1921, in Union Mills, to Robert W. Gillham, who died Oct. 17, 1955. Mrs. Gillham was a member of the First Christian Church. Surviving are three nieces, Mrs. Wilbur (Lenora M.) Bougher, Rolling Prairie; Mrs. Ray (Patricia) Harder, LaPorte and Mrs. David (Betty Jean) Patek, Joliet, IL. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Haverstock Chapel with Dr. G.     "Joseph Gillham, age 76 years, 10 months and 28 days, passed away at his home in Hanna at 8:30 last night after an illness of one year with heart disease. Mr. Gillham was born at Wanatah on May 15, 1853, but has lived at Hanna for the past three years. He had lived in LaPorte County all his life, and had retired from farming. On July 3, 1881, he married Sophia Dankert, at Hanna. Surviving are his widow; one son George, of Hanna; three daughters, Elizabeth Holtz, of LaPorte, Edith Sacks and Florence Sacks, both of Hanna; one brother, Oscar, of LaPorte; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Hanna. The Rev. Raymond Earle will officiate. Burial will be in Hanna Cemetery with Kosanke Brothers of Union Mills in charge."

Gillham, Sophia Maria (Dankert) – 1935 LaPorte Herald Argus     "SOPHIA MARIE GILLHAM…Funeral services for Mrs. Sophia Marie Gillham, 72, who died yesterday noon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Holtz, a mile east and a mile north of LaPorte in Kankakee Township, will be held tomorrow afternoon. At 1 o'clock rites will be held at the Kosanke Brothers chapel in Union Mills and at 2 o'clock at the Hanna Methodist Church, the Rev. Mr. Hart of Hamlet officiating. Burial will be in the Hanna cemetery with Kosanke Brothers in charge. Mrs. Gillham was born in Mecklenberg, Germany, on July 9, 1863. She was united in marriage in LaPorte County July 3, 1881 to Joseph Gillham. Six years ago she went from Hanna to live with her daughter. Mrs. Gillham was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church of South Wanatah. She is survived by one son, George Gillham, of Wanatah; two daughters, Mrs. Holtz and Mrs. Herman Sacks, Hanna; one brother Fred Dankert of LaPorte. The remains may be viewed at the Kosanke chapel until time for the funeral."

She was born Nov. 8, 1896, in Union Mills to Lorenzo and Catherine (Ottermath) Hense and was a lifetime resident of Union Mills. She married Clarence Gillham June 5, 1915 in St. Joseph, Mich. Surviving Mrs. Gillham besides her husband are two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Patricia) Harder, LaPorte, and Mrs. Mrs. David (Betty Jean) Patek, Joliet, Ill., and seven grandchildren. One son and one daughter preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Haverstock Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. W.E. Brashares will officiate. Burial will be in the Union Mills Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from tonight until the time of the service."

Gillham, Oscar Henry - October 29, 1932 - LaPorte Herald Argus     "Oscar Henry Gillham, age 70, of 310 E Street, passed away at his home at 8:25 yesterday morning after an illness of eight months with a complication of diseases. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gillham, Mr. Gillham was born at Wanatah on Feb. 10, 1862. He had lived in this city for the past 10 years, moving here from Union Mills. On Jan. 1, 1888, he married Nancy Livingston. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Surviving are his widow; two sons, Clarence of Union Mills and Robert of LaPorte; one daughter, Mabel Shreve of Union Mills; two grandsons, Harry and John Shreve; two granddaughters, Betty Jean Gillham and Patricia Ann Gillham of Union Mills. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon. At 1 p.m., services will be held at the residence at 310 E Street, and at 2 o'clock at the Bethel Presbyterian church of Union Mills. The Rev. H.B. Parker will officiate and burial will be in the Union Mills cemetery with Kosanke Brothers of Union Mills in charge."

Gillham, Nancy Elizabeth (Livingston) - LaPorte Herald Argus - 8 September 1940     "Mrs. Nancy Elizabeth Gillham, age 72, of Union Mills, passed away at 3 p.m. yesterday at the home of her son, Clarence, in Union Mills. She had suffered a paralytic stroke a week ago; she had been in poor health for the past three years. Mrs. Gillham was born at Union Mills on April 27, 1868 and had lived there all her life. On Jan. 1, 1888 she married Oscar Henry Gillham. She was a member of the Union Mills Methodist Church and the Mary Hilton Rebekah Lodge at Union Mills. Surviving are two sons, Clarence of Union Mills and Robert of LaPorte; one daughter, Mabel Shreve of Medaryville; two grandsons, Harry and John Shreve of Medaryville; two granddaughters, Patricia Ann and Betty Jean Gillham of Union Mills. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon. At 1:30, CST, rites will be held at the Clarence Gillham home, followed at 2 o'clock with services at the Bethel Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Union Mills cemetery with Kosanke Brothers of Union Mills in charge."

Gillham Clarence - LaPorte Herald Argus - 25 March 1977     "Clarence Gillham, 81, of 805 Harrison Street, died at 5:25 p.m. Thursday at LaPorte Hospital following a two month illness. He was born in Union Mills, April 18, 1895, to Oscar and Nancy (Livingston) Gillham and had lived all his life in LaPorte County. He was married June 5, 1915 in St. Joseph, Mich., to Irene M. Hense who died June 8, 1966. Mr. Gillham was a former employee of the Railway Express and the B & O Railroad and a retired farmer. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Patricia) Harder, LaPorte and Mrs. David (Betty Jean) Patek, Joliet, Ill. and seven grandchildren. One son, one daughter, one sister and four brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. G. Ben Hershberger officiating. Burial will be in Union Mills Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after Saturday noon and until time of services."

Gillham, Robert W - LaPorte Herald-Argus 18 October 1955     Funeral services for Robert W. Gillham, 56, of 1312 Jefferson Avenue who died yesterday noon, will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Haverstock Funeral home with the Rev. Elmer C. Johnston officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Friends may call tomorrow noon at the Haverstock chapel and until time of the funeral. The son of Oscar and Nancy Gillham, he was born in Clinton Township, LaPorte County on Aug. 21, 1889 and had lived here all his life. Mr. Gillham was employed by the New York Central railroad. On Nov. 5, 1921 in Union Mills he was married to Ethel Holloway, who survives. He was a member of the First Christian Church and the Elks Lodge. Also surviving are one brother Clarence Gillham of Union Mills; one sister, Mrs. Mabel Tennis Michigan City. One brother preceded him in death."

Gimple, John - John Gimple, residing in Roeskeville, whose severe illness had been mentioned by THE NEWS, died at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening. His death was due to kidney and stomach troubles, with which he had been afflicted for over a year. He had been confined to his home about four months, and of late it was realized that he could not recover. Deceased was born in Altenberg, Saxon, Germany, in 1824, being in his 71st year at the time of his death. He came to America in 1845 and after spending a couple years in New York and Illinois located in this city. He was a farmer by occupation and was engaged more or less extensively in the pursuits of agriculture ever since he came to this country. For the past twenty-five years or more he had resided on a small farm near Roeskeville and in addition to tilling his land had been employed by Roeske Bros. for a good many years. A year or so ago Mr. Gimple and Theodore Roeske drew a $15,000 prize in the Louisiana lottery since which time the old gentleman had been taking life more easily. He also drew $1,000 last summer and by his good luck and a long life of toil leaves his family in good circumstances. Mr. Gimple served in the late war, but was not a member of the GAR. He was married January 14, 1865, to Miss Mary Meese, who together with three children survives him. The children are William Gimple, a farmer living near the city; Mrs. John Yochem, of Los Angeles, Cal., and Walter Gimple, who lives at home.

Gimple AKA Gimpel - Mrs. Mary Gimpel, a resident of Roeskeville, died Sunday morning at 8:30 o'clock of pneumonia. Mrs. Gimple had been in poor health for the past four years, and news of her death will come as a sad shock to her many friends. Miss Mary Meese was morn in Mecklenburg, Germany, Nov. 19, 1834, came to this county in 1865 and settled in this vicinity. She and John Gimpel were married in Michigan City, Jan. 14, 1866. Mr. Gimple died in 1895. Mrs. Gimpel is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J. M. Yochum, who resides in Los Angeles. Mrs. Yochum, however, has been at Roeskeville for the past four years taking care of her mother. One brother, William Meese of this city; a sister, Mrs. Eliza Lau, residing in Mecklenburg, Germany, also survive. There are also three grandchildren, namely, Erville E. Yochem of Los Angeles, Cal., Mrs. James Larsen of Walthem, Mass., and Miss Olga Gimple of Union Mills. The funeral will be held at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the family home in Roeskeville. Rev. Gleason, Newell  - b. as Newell Sargeant 11 August 1824 - changed his name in 1843 to Newell Gleason. Served in the Civil War - He enlisted as a Lieut. Colonel 28 August 1862 - age 38 and was Commissioned into Co. S, 87th Inf Reg Ind 2 Sep 1862. Then received a Promotion to Full Col., 22 Mar 1863 Then another Promotion to Brevet Brig-Gen on 13 Mar 1865. He was MO 10 June 1865 at Washington, DC. Died 6 July 1886 - burial in Pine Lake Cemetery.

Glime, Elizabeth - ELIZABETH GLIME, Died 10 Dec 1890  -   DEATH OF THE OLDEST SETTLER.   Mrs. Elizabeth Glime, of whose illness THE NEWS has frequently spoken, died at the home of her son, Nelson Glime, in Michigan City, Ind., Wednesday, December 3rd, at 4:45 p.m.; aged 92 years, 3 months and 20 days.
  Deceased was a native of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, where she was born August 14th, 1798. She was the oldest settler in this part of the county, if not in the entire county, having moved on a farm in Coolspring Township in 1829, where she continued to live until 1868, when she removed with her son to this city. She resided on the one farm for more than half a century – 59 years.
  She embraced religion when but 13 years of age, and was a member of the Methodist denomination for over sixty years. Her first church associations were with the Presbyterian Church, but when she came west, there being no organization of that denomination in her neighborhood, she united with the M. E. Church, and has ever remained a good faithful Christian, always ready to help the poor and needy, and no caller ever left her door hungry. In her last conscious hours the Lord was with her, and was her rod and support. She was confined to her bed nearly eight months, being a patient and faithful sufferer.
  Mrs. Glime was the mother of eight children, four of whom still survive her. They are, Mrs. Mary Ann Hager of Center; Mrs. Elizabeth Mack of O’Neil, Neb.; William, of Morton, Kan., and Nelson, of this city.
  The funeral was held Friday morning, at 11 o’clock, a.m., at the Waterford School House. The text for the funeral sermon was taken from the 7th verse of the 14th Chapter of Timothy II, a text that she chose at the age of 16 years. Contributed by: Laura J. Heckman

Glime, Frank E.   -  FRANK EDWARD GLIME, Died 14 May 1921   A. W. Voss and John C. Schwark returned to Michigan City, Ind. last evening from Elgin, Ill., where they attended the funeral of the late Edward Glime, former resident of this city, who died at Elgin last Wednesday of carcinoma of the cheek. Mr. Glime was for a period of thirty years, a resident of this city. He was, for a number of years, employed by Charles Dalson as a teamster. He was married September 29, 1913 to Esther Harwood of Elgin and after living in Michigan City for a couple of years, Mr. and Mrs. Glime went to Elgin where they have resided ever since. The decedent was born in New Buffalo, Mich., October 3, 1871. He was a member of Michigan City Council No. 67, North American Union. The many friends of the deceased in this city will regret to hear of his sad demise. He leaves two children, Marjorie and Charles.

Glime - JOHN GLIME, Died 27 May 1886   Mr. John Glime died Sunday morning. The funeral, which was held at the house Tuesday, at 2:30, was largely attended. Mr. Glime was among the oldest settlers, having come here from Pennsylvania in the year 1829. He located about one mile east of Waterford, where he lived at the time of his death. On coming here he put up a shop and ran a turning lathe for years; later he followed farming. He was a member of the M. E. Church, and died in full assurance of the redeemer. He leaves an aged companion and four children to mourn his loss.
Glime, Nathan - OBITUARY - NATHAN GLIME, Died 27 May 1886 Nathan Glime, for over fifty years a resident of LaPorte County, died at his home in Coolspring Twp. Sunday aged 82 years. The funeral occurred Monday, the interment being in Waterford Cemetery. Mr. Glime’s wife survives him at the advanced age of 87 years. Three children also remain.
    GLIME, JOHN NATHAN Michigan City Dispatch W Thursday May 27, 1886 JOHN GLIME (NATHAN) Mr. John Glime died Sunday morning, (Sunday May 20) at his home in Coolspring twp. Aged 82 years. . For over fifty years a resident of LaPorte county. The funeral, which was held at the house Tuesday, at 2:30, was largely attended. Mr. Glime was among the oldest settlers, having come here from Pennsylvania in the year 1829. He located about one mile east of Waterford, where he lived at the time of his death. On coming here he put up a shop and ran a turning lathe for years; later he followed farming. He was a member of the M.E. church, and died in full assurance of the redeemer. Glime, Nelson W.   -  NELSON W. GLIME,   -  Died 05 July 1893 The funeral of Nelson W. Glime of whose death THE NEWS made mention last Saturday, was buried yesterday from the Methodist Church, Rev. W. F. Switzer officiating. The G. A. R. of which Mr. Glime was an honored member, attended the funeral in a body. Mr. Glime was a pioneer resident of LaPorte County having been born here April 22, 1843, and since his birth had lived in this vicinity, though for the past ten years he had resided in Michigan City. He enlisted in the Fourth Indiana Cavalry in 1861 and served during the year. Besides being a member of the Geo. V. Rawson Post, No. 46 G. A. R., he also held a membership in the Independent Order of Foresters in which he was insured for $3000. Mr. Glime was a machinist by trade, and owned a shop on Wabash Street. He was a well known and esteemed citizen who had many friends who will greatly mourn his death. He leaves a wife, Alice (Phillips) and daughter, Clara Etta, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Hager, who resides in Center Township. Mr. Glime was married to Mary Jane Eley and in this union two children were born, Ida (Glime) Peo and F(rank) Edward Glime.

GLOFF, GOTTLIEB - - Michigan City News Wednesday Dec 4, 1907 - - Gottlieb Gloff died Tuesday morning at 3:30 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emmett Shreve, 711 ½ east Michigan street. The cause of the death was old age and a complication of diseases from which he had been bedfast almost steadily for the past month. Mr. Gloff has been afflicted for four years which has hindered him somewhat in getting around. An hour and a half previous to his passing away, Mr. Gloff got up and walked about his room in a semi-conscious state of mind. The deceased was well know in this locality, having lived in this vicinity for 50 years. Until 15 years ago he farmed near Waterford for about 35 years. Gottlieb Gloff was a native of Posen Germany, where he was born Feb. 29, 1824. Fifty-eight years ago the aged gentleman was married in Germany to Miss Wilhelmina Friday, who died in Waterford 27 years ago. In the year 1857 Mr. and Mrs. Gloff crossed the ocean coming direct to Waterford and at once became thrifty farmers. Mr. Gloff decided to give up farming in 1892 and came to Michigan City. Two sons and two daughters survive, namely; Gottlieb, Jr., of near Alida, this state; Mrs. Albert (Bertha) Vitzents, living three miles south of Waterford; Mrs. Emmett (Mary) Shreve and Frank Gloff of this city. Goodall of Hatch's Mills, died at 5 o'clock this morning at the home of his parents, his death being caused by consumption with which he had been afflicted for about three years and most of which time he spent in Colorado in an effort to shake off the disease. Martha E. Goodall, wife of George E. Goodall, died Thursday at her home near Hatch's Mills in Galena township, at the age of 68 years, 9 months, and 29 days. Mrs. Goodall suffered a severe attack of pneumonia three years ago, from which she had never entirely recovered. She was adopted when a child by Mr. and Mrs. W. Billings of Michigan City, and reared as one of their own. She was married June 4, 1866, to George E. Goodall, and to them were born four children, all of whom preceded their mother in death She was a member of the Christian church. The deceased leaves her husband, George E. Goodall, one sister, Mrs. V.B. Cummings of Laporte; two brothers, James and William Billings, of Gary. Because of her sunny nature and never failing optimism, she will be missed not only in the home, but by everyone in the community, who came in contact with her. The funeral will be held from the home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Stamper officiating. Burial Foster Cemetery.

    BURDICK, Ind. -- Dr. John M. Goodwin died at his home at a quarter past 12 o'clock M., Saturday. Dr. John M. Goodwin was one of the oldest physicians in Porter county, and was born in Tompkins county, New York, June 12, 1812. His parents were Richard and Prudence (Hollister) Goodwin, and his ancestors lived in the early days of this country. His father was a Methodist minister for fifty years, and his mother a survivor of the Wyoming massacres. He began the study of medicine at eighteen years of age and graduated from Geneva Medical College in 1836. He then managed his home affairs until 1842, when he moved to Aurora, Ill. Here he practiced medicine four years and then returned to New York and practiced until 1856. Then he came to Porter county where he has since lived and practiced. He was married August 25, 1841, to Sarah Biggs, and his wife and four children are left to mourn his loss. Louisa, now Mrs. H. E. Kilmer, William, Clayton, and Elizabeth, now Mrs. M. Frame. Four generations of descendents mourn his loss, besides the entire community and neighbors far and near. With a helping hand for all his services as a doctor were often given. For the last few years he has been failing very fast but always looking on the bright side a life few thought him to be so poorly. He was 80 years, 4 months and 10 days old. The most sincere and heartfelt sympathy of the entire community is with the bereaved family. Burial Eight Square Cemetery.     TALK OF THE TOWN - Dr. John N. Goodwin died at his home near Otis yesterday. He had practiced in this county for the past thirty-eight years. His funeral occurred Monday, Rev. Virden officiating.

    Gottlieb Peter was born in Germany, Oct. 23, 1846, and died June 4, 1925 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Tillie Biege, in Hanna, at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 10 days. Aug 25, 1874, he married Mary Weltzien to which union was born nine children, one son and one daughter preceding the parents in death. The surviving children are Henry, Walter and Mrs. Bertha Pawlisch of Ft. Wayne, Gustave, Edward and Mrs. Tillie Biege of Hanna, and Mrs. Ida Grieger of Hobart. There are also 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Peter came to America when 9 years old and settled with his parents near Wanatah, and most of his active life was spent in the vicinity of Wanatah and Hanna. A number of years ago he retired and he and Mrs. Peter bought property and moved to Ft. Wayne, where they resided until the death of Mrs. Peter, since which time he has been living with his children. On Aug. 5, 1923, he suffered a stroke of apoplexy and since that time his health had gradually failed and the end came peacefully at 10 o'clock on the afternoon of June 4. Mr. Peter was one of the successful farmers of this community and an upright man in his dealings. In his active days he was a faithful attendant at church and has always continued loyal to his Master. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the M.E. church, the Rev. Mr. Johnson, of the First Evangelical church of Ft. Wayne, officiating. The Misses Iva Vergin and Lillian Guse of LaCrosse sang several selections, accompanied by Mrs. A.F. Leroy at the piano. Burial was in the Hanna cemetery.

DEATH OF DAVID GOULD, Pioneer Resident of Springfield Passes Away
  David Gould, one of the best known farmers of the north part of LaPorte county, and one of the county’s pioneer residents, died at 10:40 o’clock Saturday night at his home seven miles east of the city, in Springfield township. Mr. Gould’s death was caused by dropsy. He had been sick since late last spring. Mr. Gould was 74 years old. He was born in Nova Scotia, and came to this county with his parents in his boyhood. Springfield Township was his home during the remaining years of his life. Surviving him are three daughters, Mrs. Flossie Sparrow and Mr. Daisy Harris of Iowa and Mrs. Emma Brown of LaPorte; two sons John and Frank Gould, who live at the Gould homestead. Mrs. Henry Bueholtz of East Michigan street, Mrs. Myrtle Seco of South Franklin street, and Mrs. Alto Cline of East Michigan street, this city, are granddaughters of the deceased. Grage, 81, of Union Mills, died at 3:27 am today at E Street division hospital after an illness of two months. Mrs. Grage was born in Union Mills on Sept. 28, 1888 to Richard and Delia (Chambers) Barker. She lived in Union Mills all her live. She was married Sept. 25, 1905 in Union Mills to John A. Grage who died in 1950. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian church in Union Mills, of Rose Rebekah lodge in LaPorte, and the Woman's Relief Corps, Union Mills. Surviving are her two daughters, Mrs. Leo Howell and Mrs. Elmer Bowers, both of Union Mills; five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Sunday at the Kosanke Brothers Funeral home, Union Mills, the Rev. Floyd Graves officiating. Burial will be in Union Mills cemetery. GRAGE, JOHN A. - LaPorte Herald Argus, Jul 29, 1950, pg. 2, col 5     John A. Grage, 69, of Union Mills, died last night at 9:30 at his home after an illness of two years with a heart ailment. He was born in Germany March 4, 1881, the son of John and Johanna Grage, and had lived at Union Mills 68 years. On Sep. 25, 1904, he was married to Caroline Barker at Union Mills. Mr. Grage was a retired farmer and was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian church and of the Odd Fellows order. His survivors include his wife, Caroline; two daughters, Mrs. Leo Howell and Mrs. Elmer Bowers, both of Union Mills; one brother, Henry Grage, LaPorte; two sisters, Mrs. Otto Schoettler and Mrs. John Hoeppner, LaPorte; five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 o'clock at Kosanke Brothers of Union Mills with the Rev. Harry Parker of Dayton, Ind., officiating. Burial will be in the Union Mills cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mary Grams, his sons, Arthur Sylvester, and John Grams, all of this city, a daughter, Mrs. Donald McLaughlin of Gary, IN, a brother, Frank Grams, his sisters, Mrs. Henry Mann, Mrs. Polly Meeker, and Mrs. George Diskavish. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 Saturday Morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Friends will be received at Ott Chapel this evening. The Holy Name Society and Catholic Order of Foresters will meet this evening at 7:30 in the Ott funeral Chapel to recite the rosary.

  Daily Herald - Jan 20, 1897 - Chas Green, who resides about a mile east of Hatch's Mill truly deserves the sympathy of the whole community. Last July he buried his wife; Tuesday Jan 12 he buried his 9 year old daughter and Saturday, Jan. 16, his oldest daughter, 12 years of age. Interment in the Springville cemetery.

Gridley, Amanda (Barnes) - LaPorte Argus, June 14, 1888     Mrs. Amanda Gridley died at her home near Posey Chapel, Wednesday, June 6th. Mrs. Gridley was the widow of the late Samuel Upson Gridley and was a trifle over 82 years old. She was the sister of the late Cyrus Barnes, and of Ira Barnes, of LaPorte. She leaves a numerous family and relatives to mourn her loss. Burial Foster Cemetery.

    Hosea Gridley, a former well known resident of Galena township, this county, died Monday at the home of his son, Grover Gridley, in Galien, Mich. His wife died a year ago and since her death, he had made his home with his son. Mr. Gridley had grieved a great deal over his wife's death. Three sons Grover of Galien, Ed, of Three Oaks, and Earl of Galena township, and one daughter, Mrs. Childs, of Buchanan, survive. Burial Foster Cemetery.

Gridley, Lucy – July 1912     Mrs. H. B. Gridley Dies After Weeks of Suffering     Lucy Ann Cowgill was born March 8, 1849, in Wyandotte county Ohio, and departed from this life July 3, 1912, at the age of 64 years 8 months and 26 days, after eleven weeks suffering of paralysis. She was united in marriage to Hosea B. Gridley, in Three Oaks March 10, 1864. Nine children were born to this union; three daughters and two sons have preceded her to the great beyond. Four survive, her three sons and one daughter. They are: Edgar Gridley of Jackson, Mich., Mrs. William Hess of Galien and Grover and Earl Gridley of Three Oaks. Besides her husband, four children and seven grandchildren, she leaves two brothers and three sisters to morn her loss. They are: B. F. Cowgill of Benton Harbor, Cyrus Cowgill of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Lucinda Ray of Hudson, Ind., Mrs. Charlotte Swenk of Carney Co., Neb., and Harriet Seramble, whose whereabouts are not exactly known. She was united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1880. The funeral was held in the Posey Chapel Church at 11 o’clock Sunday morning July 7, 1912. Rev. A. E. Day, the Free Methodist pastor of Three Oaks preached. The remains were laid tat rest in the Foster Cemetery. Those here from away to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Gridley and two daughters, Alma and Caroline of Jackson and B. F. Cowgill of Benton Harbor.

Gridley - Mrs. Ann - Niles Daily Star dated 10-3-1952 page 2    THREE OAKS- Mrs. Ann Gridley, 86, a resident of this area for many years died at 2:20 a.m. Today at the home of a daughter near Sister Lakes following an illness of a week. Funeral services will be held in the H. B. Connally Funeral Home here at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Lawrence Johnson, pastor of the local Congregational Church, will officiate and burial will be in Posey Chapel Cemetery south of here. Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Harold Hand, at whose home she died; two sons, Claude of South Bend, and Harvey of Galesburg, 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gridley was born in Dowagiac on Jan. 10, 1866, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac West. On Dec.25, 1884 she married James L. Gridley who died on July 23, 1939. Gridley, James - 7-24-1939 on page 2 of the Niles Daily Star     James Gridley, father of Harvey Gridley, Niles, died Sunday morning at 6 o'clock in Berrien county hospital where he was taken for treatment Saturday afternoon. In December Mr. Gridley and Mrs. Gridley celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Other survivors include two sons and a daughter, Ralph, Three Oaks, Claude, Union Pier, and Mrs. Harold Hard, Benton Harbor; three brothers and a sister, Brayton and Emory, Three Oaks, Elmer, Knox, Ind. and Mrs. Wesley Wimmel, Three Oaks. Mr. Gridley was born Nov. 17, 1860 in New York state.

GRIDLEY, James L. - Michigan City News Dispatch, July 24, 1939     July 23, Sunday morning at 6, James L. Gridley, Three Oaks, retired farmer who spent nearly his whole life in this vicinity, died in the Berrien County hospital in Berrien Center, Mich., where he had been taken Saturday night. He had been ill six months. Mr. Gridley was born in New York State Nov. 17, 1860, and was married Dec. 25, 1894, to Miss Anna West, who survives with their four children, Ralph of Three Oaks, Claude of Lakeside, Harvey of Niles and Mrs. Retta Hard of Benton Harbor. Also surviving are two brothers, Brayton and Emery Gridley of Three Oaks and a sister, Mrs. Wesley Winnill of Three Oaks. Funeral services will be held at 3 Wednesday afternoon at the Connelly funeral chapel, with Rev. T.J. Henry of the Congregational church officiating. Burial will be at the Posey Chapel cemetery south of Three Oaks. Members of the Odd Fellows lodge, of which he was a member, will hold services at the grave. Friends may view the body at the Connelly funeral home until the time of the funeral.

Death claimed another of LaPorte county’s pioneer residents when Aristarchus Griffin, residing in Center township, just south of Midway on the South Shore road passed away at 5 o’clock Tuesday evening at his home. Death was due to old age and general debility, the deceased having been confined to his bed for the past four months. The deceased was born in Schoharie county, New York, on April 24, 1818, being the sone of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Griffin, who when the subject of this sketch was but sixteen years of age, moved to LaPorte county with their children and settled in Center township, buying eighty acres of land from the government for an even $100. Throughout the entire seventy years of Aristarchus Griffin’s residence in LaPorte county he made his home on the farm purchased by his father, and of the five children who came here with the parents he was the last to pass away. The deceased was married twice, his first wife being Miss Anna Rose, to which the union five children were born, two of whom, Wesley and Sylvester Griffin of Coolspring township, survive their father. Mr. Griffin was married the second time to Miss Arvilla McDowell, whose demise occurred nine years ago. The daughter by this union, Misses Anna and Capitola Griffin, survive the deceased, and who have always resided on the Griffin homestead. The funeral will be held from the late home of the deceased at 11 o’clock Friday forenoon, Rev. W.J. MRS. ARVILLA GRIFFIN.   An Old and Well Known Resident of This County Passes Away. Mrs. Arvilla Griffin died Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock, at her home, one mile this side of the summit, on the LaPorte road. The deceased had been ill for some time, but she seemed to have rallied, and was improving until last Saturday, when she was stricken with apoplexy, from which time she slowly sank. She leaves a husband, Aristrachus Griffin and four children,; Mrs. John Blue, of this city, Mr. Emery Nodine and Miss’s Anna and Capitola Griffin, residing at home. Mrs. Griffin was 71 years of age and was born in New York state, coming here at an early age and residing in this vicinity ever since. Mr. Griffin is one of the oldest settlers of LaPorte County, having come here about the year 1835. The deceased was a member of no church, but the Methodist faith was nearest her heart. DEATH of MRS. CHARLES GRIFFEN - Mrs. Barbara Griffin, the wife of Chas. Griffin, died suddenly at her home, northwest of Summit church, on Tuesday evening, about 8 o’clock. During the day she had been to this city on business and so far as known, was in her usual good health. After her arrival home in the evening, she attended to her household affairs as usual and retired for the night. Suddenly she swooned away and died in a few minutes. The deceased was about 70 years of age and leaves a husband and three children to mourn her death. This makes the third sudden death in this locality in the past ten days. Contributed by: Laura J. GRIFFIN, CHARLES - - Michigan City Evening News Saturday February 20, 1932 - - AGED CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES
Passing of Charles Griffin Leaves Only Three “Old Soldiers” Heart disease this morning reduced the surviving Civil war veterans from four to three, when Charles Griffin, 83 years old, of Rural Route 8, Coolspring township, passed away following a short illness. Mr. Griffin enjoyed his usual good health on Friday, ate his supper with enjoyment, and retired about 2:30 o’clock and passed away at 12:15 o’clock. Mr. Griffin was active for a man of his years, enjoyed walking around the farm where he had spent his boyhood, and spent a great deal of time in reading. Mr. Griffin made his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Edwards. He had been a farmer during his more active years, He was born on April 20, 1848, in Coolspring township, the son of Sylvester Griffin and Catherine Hunt Griffin. At the age of 15 years he joined the army on Dec. 25, 1863, and served for three years, seeing much fighting, and participating in several battles. He was a private in Co. E. 12th regiment, Indiana Calvary. After returning from the war to his old home, Mr. Griffin suffered an accident while hunting, which resulted in the loss of his left hand.. On last Friday night he attended the Lincoln celebration held by members of the John Franklin Miller post No. 37, American Legion in this city. He and Barbara Ellen were united in marriage, but she preceded him in death 36 years ago. He is survived by one son, Daniel W. Griffin of Fowlerville, Mich., and by two daughters, Mrs. Aaron Fredenburg and Mrs. William Edwards both of Coolspring township. The sisters, Mrs. Mary Rowley, and Mrs. Hattie Goff, of LaPorte also survive, along with 13 grandchildren. Mr. Griffin was a member of the G.A.R. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later with interment in Low cemetery. The remains have been moved to the Carlisle funeral home and plans are being made for patriotic organization of the city to attend the funeral services in a body. Contributed by: Laura J. Heckman

Griffin, James died (July 11, 1898)     James Griffin died last night July 11, 1898 at 9 o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Zahrt. He was born in Otsego County, New York, 73 years ago the 26th of November and came to this county with his parents in 1833. In October 1850 he was married to Miss Mary Ann Weston and four children were born to them. Mr. Griffin lived for many years on what is now the Homer Decker farm, three miles east of town and since 1833 has been a resident of Laporte County with the exception of two years spent in the west. Mrs. Griffin died three years ago, since which time her husband has made his home with his daughters in this city. Four years ago Mr. Griffin was stricken with paralysis and has since been a terrible sufferer. Sunday morning he wished his sister, Mrs. Andrews, to read from the Bible and pray with him which she did. He repeated some comforting passages of scripture and said he was ready and willing to go. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon, at 2 o'clock from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Zahrt, 611 Michigan Avenue, Rev. R. H. Hartley officiating. The pall bearers will be John Richter, Sr., J. T. Klocksiem, J. W. Ludlow, H.C. Miller, Henry McGill, Joseph Whetzell.

   The funeral of James Griffin took place yesterday at 2 p.m. from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Zahrt, 611 Michigan Avenue, Rev. R.H. Hartley officiating. The pall bearers were: John Richter, Sr., J.T. Klocksiem, J.W. Ludlow, H.C. Miller, Henry McGill, Joseph Whetzell. There was a large attendance. Those present from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Andrews, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Andrews, Jr., and Mrs. May Wagner and daughter, of Elkhart. Burial was at the Griffin burying ground, three miles east of town.

Grime, Daniel A. Rev. death in 1909     Aged Minister Is Dead
Rev. D. A. Grime Succumbs to Typhoid Fever     Rev. Daniel A. Grime formerly a pastor of the Laporte circuit of the Methodist church, died at New Carlisle Thursday night of typhoid fever after an illness of two months. He was 68 years old and had been retired from active ministerial duties for a number of years. He as married to Sarah Peters (this should be Teeter) of Rolling Prairie, by whom he had one son, Dr. Henry Grime who it will be recalled, was recently judged insane and taken to the hospital at Longcliff. Mrs. Grime survives. Rev. Mr. Grime was a member of the Terre Coupee Masonic lodge No. 204. The funeral service was held at 10 o'clock Sunday morning at the Methodist church at New Carlisle and the burial took place at the New Carlisle cemetery.

He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and of the Royal Neighbors. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James Casino, Youngstown, O.; Mrs. Harry Gross, LaPorte; two sons, Gale Gring, Mishawaka, Ind., and Warren Gring of Los Angeles, and eight grandchildren. GRISWOLD, FRANK R. - 12-11-1944     Funeral services for Frank R. Griswold, 91, who died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday at the home of his son, Irving Griswold, route 1, La Porte, were held this afternoon and at the grave in Springville cemetery, the Rev. W. Vander Linden officiating. He was born in Vevay, Ind., on October 21, 1853, the son of Leonard and Sarah Helen Griswold. Others surviving are: 5 grandchildren. His wife, one son, one daughter, and one grandson preceded him in death, the latter in a Japanese prison camp. O. M. Haverstock was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Gross, David J. - March 22, 1907 - LaPorte, Indiana "Herald-Argus"     David J. Gross, born Jan 1, 1842 in Berks Co, Penn, died at his residence a short distance South of Wellsboro, a week ago this morning March 22, 1907 after fully a years sickness. His disease was dropsy and heart trouble. He suffered at times excruciatingly and death was a great relief. Mr Gross was a soldier in the civil war, having served fully four years. He was born in Pennsylvania and came to Indiana near forty years ago. For a time he resided in this city. While here he was a partner of Thomas Whorwell as a mason contractor. Mr Gross married in 1865 Miss Chestie Yarger of Ohio, who died in 1890. Eight children were born to them. Two girls and one boy died in childhood, the five surviving children are Harry, of South Bend, Fred in New York city, Ben of this city, and George and Walter, live at home. Mr Gross was a member of Patton post, G.A.R, and his comrades had charge of his funeral on Sunday, Commander, Rev. E.D. Daniels also conducting the service at the home. The burial was in the Morgan cemetery.

Gross, Harry E. - Nov 4, 1938 "Argus Times" newspaper     Harry Gross died Nov 3 in Fairview Hospital, LaPorte. He was the son of David and Chelsea (Yarger) Gross. In 1869 his parents came to LaPorte Co. and settled on a farm west of Hanna. In 1886 Harry moved to Kingsman, Kansas. In 1888 he moved to Chicago where he was involved in the construction of buildings for the 1893 World’s Fair. Harry moved from South Bend to LaPorte on Jan 7, 1932 where he was in the restaurant business.
    Harry was married to Jennie L. Eaton of Wanatah. He and Jennie had 5 children, four of which preceded Harry in death. Jennie died Dec 4, 1927. On July 3, 1929 Harry married Nora Hallanan of South Bend. Harry is survived by his son Fred Gross of South Bend, as well as two brothers Fred E. Gross of Yonkers, NY and Walter B. Gross of LaPorte, Ind. Burial in Riverview Cemetery, South Bend, Ind.

Gross, Fred E. - "The Herald Statesman" newspaper Dec 11, 1945 edition, page 2, Yonkers, NY     Fred E. Gross Street Builder in City, Dies      -     Born in LaPorte, Indiana
    Fred E. Gross a pioneer Yonkers contractor, who played a major role in the development of the city's streets, sewer system and other municipal projects, died today in his home at 27 Rossiter Avenue at the age of seventy-seven. In 1935, when Mr Gross was primary candidate for the Republican aldermatic nomination in the Tenth Ward, he rejected an offer by the Fusion Party to designate him for Comptroller on its ticket.
    Born in LaPorte, Ind, in 1868 he was the son of David and Christine Yarger Gross, who had migrated there with a covered wagon train from Pennsylvania in 1848. They were descended from pre-Revolutionary Dutch settlers, in Pennsylvania. Mr Gross became a stonemason in his youth and worked at his trade in Chicago, until he became associated with J.S. Kearns and Sons in Saginaw, Mich, and helped build sawmills around the Great Lakes. His first wife was the former Elizabeth Kearns, sister of the head of the company, who died a number of years ago.
    Later Mr Gross was construction superintendent on the Erie Canal and at the completion of his work in 1898 he came to Yonkers. Here he established the Gross Contracting Company, Inc, of which he was president, and was awarded many state and federal contracts. He claimed to have purchased and operated the first steam shovel in this city. During World War I, Mr Gross built a United States Army training camp in New Jersey. He retired at the beginning of World War II.
    His second wife, the former Blanche Augusta Strauch, survives as well as children of both marriages, five daughters, Mrs Joseph R. Wilson and Mrs Lars A. Benson of Leonia, NJ, Mrs Robert Pryor, Mrs Joseph Pancurak and Mrs Alfred Ehrich, all of Yonkers, two sons, Arthur D. Gross of Stamford, Conn, and Chief Petty Officer Fred E. Gross, Jr, U.S.N.R., stationed in Florida, one brother, Walter R. Gross of LaPorte, Ind, ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Burial in Oakland Cemetery, Yonkers, NY.

Gross, Benjamin F. - Oct 4, 1930 "Herald-Argus" LaPorte, Indiana     The son of David J. and Chestina Yarger Gross, he was born near Hanna on Jan 1, 1876, and spent his boyhood days there. On Aug 23, 1896, he was united in marriage to Mary Alma Moyer of this city and to them were born two sons and two daughters. The elder son, Earl Raymond, preceded his father in death. Mr. Gross moved with his family in 1898 to a farm near LaPorte and in 1902 entered the postal service here. He established his own route, which was the custom of the department at that time. He served this route diligently for 16 years, resigning Jan 1, 1918, to assume the superintendency of the county farm. Mr Gross was reappointed superintendent in 1922. He returned to this city on March 1, 1926, residing at 905 Detroit Street.
    He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs Delano White of Gary and Mrs Warner held of LaPorte, one son, Robert Lee, at home, four grandchildren, four brothers, George M., and Walter B, of LaPorte, Harry E, of South Bend, and Fredrick E. of Yonkers, NY, two step-brothers, Harry Sheely of Springfield, Ohio, and Forest Sheely of Hanna, one step-sister, Mrs Alice Gooden of this city. Mr Gross also had a large circle of neighbors and other friends. Burial in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Gross, Alma M. - 8/7/1933 "Herald-Argus" LaPorte, Indiana     Mrs Alma M. Gross, age 55, of 502 East Maple avenue, passed away at 3:30 yesterday afternoon at the Henrotin Memorial hospital in Chicago. The daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Moyer, Mrs Gross was born in Ohio on Jan 27, 1878, moving to this state at the age of 14. She was married in LaPorte in June, 1896, to Benjamin F. Gross, who preceded in death on Oct 3, 1930. Mrs Gross was a member of the Christian church.     Surviving are two daughters, Mrs Warner Held of LaPorte and Mrs Delano N. White of Gary, a son, Robert L. Gross, at home, her mother, Mrs Sarah Collins of Three Rivers, Mich, two sisters Mrs Nettie Newkirk of Joliet, Mont, and Mrs Frank Wetherbee of Three Rivers, Mich, and a brother James Moyer of Ohio. A son, Earl Gross, preceded in death on June 3, 1928.     Funeral services will be held at the residence at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. Clayton H. Wilson officiating. The body may be viewed at the home tomorrow afternoon and evening. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery with E.E. Ebbert in charge.

Gross, Earl Raymond "Herald-Argus", LaPorte, Indiana - 6/4/1928     Earl Raymond Gross, age 31, died yesterday after an illness of two weeks.
    The son of Mr and Mrs Benjamin F. Gross, he was born at Hanna on March 19, 1897. In 1898 he came to LaPorte with his parents, later attending the public schools of this city. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the U.S. navy. After preliminary training at the Great Lakes Training station he entered the Naval Electrical school at Brooklyn. Upon completing the electrical course, he finished his enlistment on the battleship, Arkansas, and was honorably discharged as an electrician, first class. During most of the time Mr Gross was on the U.S.S. Arkansas, this ship was used to convoy transport ships. After his discharge in June, 1918, he returned to LaPorte to visit his parents for a short time and later was drafted into the army, training with an artillery company at Fort Benjamin Harrison. After the armistice, he was transferred to the Debarkation hospital, New York City, where he served for several months as an electrician.
    Mr Gross returned to LaPorte in 1919 and entered the electrical business, in which he made many friends. On Oct 16, 1923, he married Miss Cecil N. Wright of this city. He was a member of the Christian church, the American legion, Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodmen. Mr Gross is survived by his widow and parents, two sisters, Mrs D.N. White of Gary and Mrs W.M. Held, and one brother, Robert Lee Gross of this city. The funeral will be held at the Wright home, 402 D street, at 2 pm Wednesday. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery with E.E. Ebbert in charge. The body may be viewed at the home Tuesday afternoon and evening.

On Oct 16, 1923 in LaPorte, she married Earl R. Gross who died June 3, 1928. Surviving are a number of cousins.

Gross, Robert Lee - 6/7/1943 "Herald-Argus" newspaper LaPorte, Indiana     Robert Lee Gross, 30, of 1002 Indiana Avenue, died last night at 5:30 o'clock at the Holy Family hospital following an illness of one month. He was born in LaPorte on April 14, 1913, the son of Mr and Mrs Benjamin Gross, and had lived here all his life. He was employed as inspector at the Kingsbury Ordinance plant. On Nov 20, 1942, he was married in LaPorte to Beatrice Bratich. He was a member of the Elks lodge. He graduated from LaPorte High School in 1930. He is survived by his wife and two sisters, Mrs Marie Held, LaPorte, and Mrs Elizabeth White, Gary, a grandmother, Mrs Sarah C. Collins, Three Rivers, Mich, two nieces, Mrs Barbara Johnson, Valparaiso, and Mrs Shirley Tufteland, LaPorte, two nephews, Richard Held, U.S. Navy, and Thomas E. Held, U.S. army. One brother, Earl, preceded him in death.

Gross, George Marion - 4/27/1933 LaPorte, Indiana "Herald Argus" newspaper     Born Near Hanna
    Mr. Gross was born Nov 6, 1881 near Hanna, this county, the son of David J. and Chestie Yarger Gross, both of whom had come from Pennsylvania. He was educated in county schools and was graduated from Union Mills High School. As a young man he taught schools in Washington, Dewey and Hudson townships. At the age of 20 he went to Yonkers, NY where he entered the contracting business with an older brother. From 1907 to 1909 he was employed in the traffic department of the Grand Trunk railroad. In 1909 he moved to LaPorte from South Bend and established the traffic department for the M. Rumely Company. In 1911 he went to Winnipeg, Canada, as traffic manager for the company for the entire country of Canada. In 1912 he returned to LaPorte and organized the Gross Construction Company, of which he was president.
    On Nov 28, 1908 he was united in marriage to Olga J. Ludtke, of near Rolling Prairie. Mr Gross was a member of the Masonic Elks and Odd Fellows orders. Burial in Pine Lake Cemetery. (The rest of the obit is cut off)

    A prominent LaPorte businessman, Harry J. Gross, 61, of 215 Forest drive, died at 5:30 pm Saturday at E Street division hospital after a long illness. Mr Gross started the Ready Mix Concrete Company here in March of 1946 and was the owner of the firm until he sold out in 1967. He was born in South Bend to George M. and Olga (Ludtke) Gross, July 9, 1909, and had resided in LaPorte since 1922, coming here from Wisconsin. He was married July 7, 1934 to Lucille Gring. Mr Gross was a member of the First United Methodist church, Veteran of WWII, Hammond Gray Post 83, American Legion; past president of the Mid-West Ready Mix Concrete association, the Lions club, and was a former member of the Elks club.
    Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs John (Martha) Williams, Bend, Ore, three grandsons, a twin brother, Walter Gross, Knoxville, Tenn, and one sister Mrs Marion Rumely, South Bend. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Tuesday afternoon at the Cutler Brothers Funeral home with the Rev. W. Leon Hartman officiating. Burial in Pine Lake Cemetery. (the rest of the obit is cut off)

Gross, Lucille Gring - "Herald Argus" newspaper 4/26/1990     BEND, Oregon---------Mrs Lucille (Gring) Gross, 79, of Bend, Ore, and formerly of LaPorte, died Thursday, April 26, 1990, in Bend. She was born Aug 14, 1911, and lived in Bend for 15 years, moving there from LaPorte, where she had lived for many years. While in LaPorte, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Service League. She married Harry Gross, who preceded her in death. Surviving are one daughter, Martha Buck, of Chilhowee, Mo, three grandsons, one great-grandson and one brother, Warren Gring, of California. One sister preceded her in death. A memorial service was conducted in Bend. The remains were cremated and the ashes will be interred in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, at a later date.

Gross, Walter - April 19, 1974 LaPorte, Indiana "Herald Argus"     Walter J. Gross, 64, who resided at the home of his sister Mrs. Marion Gross Rumely, 232 Bartlett East, South Bend, died at 2:40 am Thursday at Memorial hospital, South Bend following a year and a half illness. He was born in South Bend July 9, 1909 to George M. and Olga J. (Ludtke) Gross and had lived in LaPorte many years, where he and his brother Harry ran the George M. Gross Construction Co. He also ran the Gross Estimating Service in Syracuse, NY until he returned to South Bend several months ago. He was a member of the Episcopal church and attended Purdue university. He graduated from Notre Dame and was a member of Elks Lodge and the Konosioni Lodge 950 F and AM in Syracuse.
    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Sally Bard, LaPorte, and Mrs Karen Dennison of Honolulu, one son, George David Gross, Pine Mountain, Pa, four grandchildren, one sister, Mrs Marion Gross Rumely of South Bend. He was preceded in death by one brother. Burial in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

    Graveside services for Mrs Elizabeth "Betty" Lay Gross, 91, of 1508 Michigan Ave, LaPorte, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Pine Lake Cemetery with Rev. Douglas Hadley officiating. She died at 2:06 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2001 at LaPorte Hospital. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. She was born Dec 21, 1909, in LaPorte to Ernest and Abbie (Duggan) Lay.
    Mrs Gross was a member of LaPorte First United Methodist Church and Delta Gamma Sorority, a charter member of the LaPorte Service League, had attended Ohio State University and had retired from LaPorte County Public Library.
    Surviving are two grand-daughters, Elizabeth Bard Dunnells of Boston and Sue Bard of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by one daughter Sally Gross Bard, on Sept 28, 1981.

Gross, Walter Byron - April 19, 1946 edition LaPorte, Indiana "Herald Argus"     Funeral services for Walter B. Gross, Sr, who died at his home, 207 East Jefferson avenue, yesterday noon, will be conducted by the Rev. Herschel L. Conley at the Haverstock chapel at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be at the Pine Lake cemetery.
    Mr Gross, who lived in LaPorte all his life, sold monuments for seven years before starting the Gross Construction Company which he headed for 16 years. He had been ill for the past seven years, and was 59 at the time of his death. The deceased leaves his wife, Lana, one son, George G. Gross, of LaPorte, and five grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs Margaret Wood, preceded him in death in March, this year.

Gross, Lana Teerock - 9/19/1948 LaPorte, Indiana, "Herald Argus"     Mrs. Lana Gross, 60, of 207 E. Jefferson Avenue, died at 3:30 o'clock yesterday morning at the Holy Family hospital. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Teerock, she was born in Buckley, Ill, on Oct 12, 1887 and had lived here practically all her life. On Dec 1, 1907 in Union Mills, she was married to Walter Gross, who died in 1946. She was a member of the First Christian church. Surviving are one son, George G. Gross of LaPorte, six grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs Lena Pane of Kalamazoo, Mich, and Mrs Walter Nichols of Cassopolis, Mich. Her husband and one daughter, Mrs. Fred Wood, preceded her in death.
   Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Haverstock chapel with Dr. Charles R. Naftzger officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel until time of funeral.

Gross, George Gerald - 5/21/1973 LaPorte, Indiana "Herald Argus"     George G. Gross, 64, of 57 Keston Elm Drive, died Saturday at 6:55 am at Hospital Hospital. Mr. Gross was born to Walter and Lana (Teerock) Gross April 30, 1909 in LaPorte and lived here all his life. He married Florence Palm July 15, 1939, in LaPorte, who survives. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran church, Excelsior Lodge 41 F. & A, and a member of the local Cement Finishers Union. He worked for many years as a cement finisher for Larson-Danielson Construction and recently was employed by the J.F. Pritchard Company. Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs Donald (Ingrid) Craft of Veedersburg, one son, Gerald of Rohnert Park, Calif, and one grandchild. A sister, Mrs Fred Wood, preceded him in death.
    Services are Tuesday at 10:30 am at the Cutler Funeral home, the Rev. H. Milton Lundahl officiating. Visitation is from 3pm today until services. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery.

    She was born June 23, 1912, in LaPorte County, to Axel and Hannah (Gustason) Palm and had lived here all her life. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, and was a retired teacher, having taught at Kesling Junior High School, LaPorte High School and Kingsbury Elementary School. On June 15, 1939, in LaPorte, she married George G. Gross who died May 19, 1973.
    Surviving are one son, Gerald G. of Lake Mills, Wis, one daughter, Mrs Donald (Ingrid) Craft of Veedersburg, Ind, three grandchildren, one brother, Wayne H. Palm of LaPorte and one sister, Mrs Hazel Devenport of Fort Wayne, Ind. One sister preceded her in death.

    SOLON, Ohio----Mr Gerald G. Gross, 48, of Solon and formerly of LaPorte, died Tuesday, Oct 29, 1991, at Mt Sinai Hospital, Cleveland.
    He was born March 30, 1943, in LaPorte, to George and Florence (Palm) Gross and was a marketing executive. He married Jan (Madunicky) Vlack, who survives. Also surviving are one step son, Christopher Vlach, one step daughter, Cara Vlach, and one sister, Ingrid Craft, of Indianapolis.
    A graveside service will be conducted Thursday at 2 pm. LaPorte time at Pine Lake Cemetery by Rev. Dennis Meyer. Friends may call at the Kindrich-McHugh Funeral Home, Solon, today from 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 pm Laporte time.
