DANIELS, MATHIAS - LaPorte Herald-Argus 24 February 1940 "Funeral services for Mathias Daniels, 75, of rural route No. 3, LaPorte, who died at the Fairview hospital yesterday morning, will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Haverstock chapel, Dr. S. Arthur Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery with O.M. Haverstock in charge. The body may be viewed at the Haverstock chapel from tonight until time for the funeral. Mr. Daniels was born in Dobsina, Hungary, on Feb. 24, 1864. He came here 20
from Central City, Colo. On May 25, 1898 he married in LaPorte to Anna Holtz, who died five years ago. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Frank Ebeck, LaPorte; one sister in Hungary and several nephews and nieces. A brother and a sister preceded him in death."

MATHIAS - LaPorte Herald-Argus 11 December 1934 "Mrs. Anna Holtz Daniels, age 65, wife of Mathias Daniels of rural route 3, passed away at 12:05 a.m., today at the home of her sister, Mrs. Alfred Borman, 241 Lincolnway East. She had been ill three months with a complication of diseases. The daughter of John and Elizabeth Holtz, she was born in Germany on July 9, 1869. She had lived in LaPorte for the past 14 years, moving here from Colorado. Mrs. Daniels girlhood days were spent in LaPorte as she came here with her parents when she was four years old. She left LaPorte to go to Colorado and returned here 14 years ago. She was married to Mathias Daniels in LaPorte on May, 25, 1899. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Frank Ebeck of LaPorte; one sister, Mrs. Borman of this city; one brother, Charles Holtz of Kankakee township; one stepbrother, Charles Freeland of LaPorte and a number of nieces and nephews. Arrangements for the funeral, in charge of O.M. Haverstock, are incomplete, and will be announced later. The body may be viewed this evening at the Borman home."

EMMA - LaPorte Herald-Argus Friday, 8 February 1946 "Mrs. Emma Dankert, 54, of 201 J Street, died at 6 o'clock this morning at the Holy Family hospital after an illness of three months. The daughter of William and Bertha Borchert, she was born in LaPorte on May 21, 1891 and had lived here all her life. On May 20, 1911 in LaPorte, she was married to Herman F. (Cutie) Dankert, manager of the Civic Auditorium bowling alleys, who survives. She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church. Also survives are one daughter, Miss Mildred Dankert, at home; four sons, Walter, LaPorte, Arthur and Donald, both at home, and Norman of Michigan City, and two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Gerdes, LaPorte, and a brother William Reinholtz, New Carlisle. One son preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Haverstock chapel with the Rev. M.E. Reinke officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Friends may call tomorrow night at the chapel and until time of the funeral."

Harold W. Dankert, 87, LaPorte, died at 7:10 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 9, 2001) at LaPorte Hospital. Private family services were held and cremation took place. Burial of ashes will take place in Pine Lake Cemetery at a later date. He was born April 21, 1914, in LaPorte, to Clarence and Ella (Kohne) Dankert. On Oct. 28, 1939, in LaPorte, he married Eileen Smutzer, who survives in LaPorte. Survivors also include one sister, Loraine Levenhagen, Hendersonville, N.C.; and two brothers, Howard Dankert, West Plains, Mo., and Warren (Rose) Dankert, Michigan City. Preceding Mr. Dankert in death was one brother, Gilmore Dankert. Mr. Dankert was an operating engineer for Brown Inc. He was a member of First Baptist Church of LaPorte. He belonged to Local 150 Operating Engineers, and Moose Lodge 492. Mr. Dankert served in the Army during World War II.

He was born in Mecklenberg-Shwerin, Germany, and leaves to mourn his loss the widow and three children, L.F. Dankert, Sophia Gillham and Minnie Freeland, all from this county, 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the residence. H. L. Conley officiating. Mr. Dankert was born in Germany on Dec. 23, 1860, and came here at the age of four years. On March 27, 1893, in LaPorte, he was married to Albertine Krause who preceded him in death. Surviving are four sons, Louis H. Dankert, of South Dakota, Herman, Edward, and Wilbur Dankert, all of LaPorte; two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Tschappat of Aledo, Ill., and Mrs. Myrtle Closson of South Bend, 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. DANKERT, MRS. (Marie Hillman Dankert) - Daily Herald, LaPorte, Indiana 25 July 1913 Mrs. Dankert, widow of the late Karl Dankert, died yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Freeland, two miles west of Westville, following a stroke of apoplexy she had the day before. She leaves to mourn her loss one son, Fred, and two daughters, Mrs. Sophia Gillham, and Mrs. Charles Freeland, 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves one brother at Stillwell. The body was brought to the city and taken to the home of Fred Dankert, corner McCollum and Ridge streets, from which place the funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock with burial at Patton's' cemetery, Rev. Hans Zumstein officiating. Weir and Petering are in charge."

Death came as a climax to a nervous breakdown, which Mrs. Dankert suffered three weeks ago. About 50 years ago, Mrs. Dankert came to this country from Germany. She married Fred Dankert, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Dankert was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical church. Mrs. Dankert leaves two daughters and one son. They are Mrs. W. R. Smith of La Porte, Mrs. William Fowler of Michigan City, and Charles Dankert of Mill Creek. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Monday at the home. The Rev. C. G. Bratzel will be the minister. Burial will be at Patton cemetery, Cutler Bros. are the undertakers.

Davis, was born Dec. 30, 1854, on the farm where his parents now reside in Galena township, LaPorte Co., Ind., and was married to Miss Hannah D. Maas, Jan. 1, 1881, and passed from earth life Jan. 23, 1896. His funeral was held at the Christian church, Saturday forenoon, Rev. Grow of the Disciple church officiating, and he was laid to rest in the Foster cemetery. The pallbearers were, Miller Heckman, A. A. Heckman, F. Heckman, Frank Smith, Edward Etherington and Mr. Wilson.
Deceased was assisting in cutting wood with a buzz saw when the drive wheel burst, sending a missile weighing fifteen pounds through the lower portion of his body. He had the best possible attention, but the physician said at once that nothing could be done to save his life. He only survived about twelve hours. He was conscious unto the end, and it was remarkable with what calm resignation and Christian fortitude he bore it all, talking with his loved ones and admonishing his children to do right and be helpful to their mother. Mr. Davis leaves four bright children, three sons and one daughter, the eldest a son about thirteen years of age and the youngest a son four years old. Arthur was reared and educated here and he possessed a rare moral character. He was a member of the Disciple church and lived a modest unassuming Christian life, was a kind and affectionate father and husband, and it is said of him that he never spoke an unkind word to his wife. He will be missed in his home, in the church and in the Sunday school where he was a faithful worker and principal singer. For the closing hymn Sunday, Jan. 19, he sang: "God be with us till we meet again."
A large concourse of people gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed and to show their sympathy for the mourning for the mourning friends. But so let us speak of his departure as though going to sleep with a brighter awakening, as only a curtain separating us from the summer land of Life. "There is no death. The voice whose joyous tones Made glad the scene of sin and strife, Sings now the everlasting song Amid the Tree of Life."Davis, Caleb - 15 April 1927 newspaper - Caleb Davis, son of Caleb and Sarah Davis, was born in Galena, Ind. Jan. 17th 1845. Here he attended the public school and with his brothers, sisters spent a very happy young life. When he was a young man he heard of great new country of Michigan with its forests and lakes. This new country seemed to beckon him to come with his strong young manhood to help clear its fields, build its highways, home, schools and churches and its law and character. So on the evening of Feb. the 13th 1867 he drove a span of mules through the great pine forest to what is now his beautiful farm home.
Mr. Davis' life was such that he could not long live in a community without his influence being felt. He found only the trees in possession of his farm. He leaves it with cleared fields and productive orchards. He found no house for shelter, but leaves three. He found no highways but leaves a splendid improved highway system. There were not schools to speak of, but soon he with his few neighbors made better education possible. He found no place to worship God, but a little church was built by their united efforts and today this beautiful church stands as one of the memorials of his great devotion to his heavenly father.
Mr. Davis' life was blessed with two loving and helpful companions. He was first married to Miss Esther Goit Jan. 15 1873, who was a helpmate indeed. But being called to the great beyond years ago. On April 7th 1915, he was united in marriage to Miss Fern Anderson and Shelby Galley No. 2 who tenderly cared for him never forgetting the sacred promise, in sickness and health forsaking all others, I will cleave unto so long as we both shall live.
Mr. Davis' sickness was of long duration and it was Wednesday at 5 a.m. that he heard the call of his great master, whom he had served so faithfully, at the good age of 82 yrs. 2 months and 26 days. He leaves to mourn our loss, his wife, son Jesse Davis of Mears, and Samuel Pringle of New York, Ohio, one brother of Muskegon, Michigan, Mrs. Evans of California and many true friends. The funeral services were held at his church home, the Mears M.E. Sunday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. F.J. Schleuter officiating. The body was taken to LaPorte, Ind. For burial.

Funeral services for Edward LeRoy Davis, 80, route 3, LaPorte, who died at his home at 8:45 p.m. yesterday, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Haverstock Funeral home. The Rev. Berwyn Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Foster cemetery near Rolling Prairie.
Mr. Davis was born to Arthur and Hannah (Moss) Davis in Galena township, on July 30, 1882. He lived in that area all his life. He was married in Montrose, Colo., on Jan 9, 1909 to Mary Tappan, who survives. Mr. Davis is a member of the Rolling Prairie Christian church.

Emma Lillian Davis, 102, formerly of 1809 Greenwood Ave., died at 10:30 a.m. yesterday (Nov.. 5, 1986) at the home of her daughter.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Carlisle Funeral Home. The Rev. James B. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Foster Cemetery, LaPorte County.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and until the service Saturday at the funeral home. Mrs. Davis was born April 13, 1884, in Virgil, Ill., the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Ann Dickerson Perry.
On June 1, 1911, in Chicago, she married Guy E. Davis, who died Nov. 11, 1973.
Surviving are one daughter, Dorothy Messner Lyles, Michigan City, one son, Gordon Emerson Davis, Tucson, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Two sisters and one brother are deceased.
Mrs. Davis was retired as a legal secretary and had been a resident of Michigan City for 50 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Women's Study Club and Parents Teachers Association.

Guy E. Davis, 90, 1809 Greenwood Ave., was found dead in his yard yesterday afternoon. He had suffered an apparent heart attack while raking leaves.

A resident here since 1929, Mr. Davis was born in Rock Island, Ill., Aug 30, 1883, the son of Lowell D. and Lydia E. Hanville Davis. He was a retired employee of Joy Manufacturing Co. On June 1, 1911, he was married in Chicago to Emma L. Perry, who survives.

Lawrence Davis LaPORTE — Lawrence A. “Larry” Davis, 47, LaPorte, died at 8:43 p.m. Sunday (July 1, 2001) at LaPorte Hospital. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Countryside Christian Church, Michigan City, with the Rev. Rod Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in Door Village Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte. Mr. Davis was born Sept. 13, 1953, in LaPorte to Eugene and Phyllis (Pontius) Davis. On July 2, 1978, in LaPorte he married Marilyn B. Johnson, who survives in LaPorte. Survivors include two daughters, Holly B. Davis and Sara C. Davis, both of LaPorte; one son, Peter L. Davis, LaPorte; two sisters, Vicki J. Tolin, Indianapolis, and Darlene S. Davis, Cape Cod, Mass.; one brother, Gregory A. Davis, Wheeling, W.Va.; and 21 nieces and nephews. His parents preceded him in death. Mr. Davis had served as co-director of the LaPorte Campus Life for five years, had been director of the Adult Protective Services and also had a private Christian counseling practice for 15 years. He attended Agape Christian Church. He served on the Campus Life Steering Committee and was a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors. He was a 1971 graduate of LaPorte High School and a 1981 graduate of Grace College. He received his master’s degree in 1985 in Bible Counseling. He also helped organize the Door Village Park. Death was caused by old age, augmented by complications.
Born in Galena township, LaPorte county, Oct. 22, 1852, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Hanville, Mrs. Davis lived her entire life in this county. Her marriage to Lowell D. Davis was solemnized in Berrien Springs, Mich., on Dec. 30, 1872.
Mrs. Davis was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church, this city.
Surviving are three children, Guy E. Davis, this city; Abbie E. Coombs, LaPorte, Ind.; and May Belle Reisinger of Gary, Ind.; a brother, Newell Hanville, Otis, Ind.; a sister, Nellie Ayers, Los Angeles, Calif.; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 from the Wilber funeral home. the Rev. A.E. Bagby will conduct the service. Burial will take place in Foster's cemetery, Galena township.

Mrs. Mary F. Davis, 82, of route 5, died at 11:45 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson Sanitarium.
Mrs. Davis was born in Galena township on Sept. 10, 1887 to George and Persis (Kiefer) Tappan and she lived in this area all her life.
She was married in Montrose, Colo., on Jan 9, 1909 to Edward LeRoy Davis who died Jan. 7, 1963. She was a member of the Rolling Prairie Christian church. She was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, Jan. 23, 1868, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Peo. She came to this country as a small child. She was married in this city in 1887 to Elais Dawson, who died several years ago. Survivors include two sons, Floyd and Herbert, and two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Timm and Mrs. Ruth Valentine, all of this city, seven grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Lena Rise, Los Angeles, Calif. Services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. from Hummer mortuary, Dr. Earl Ray Hart, officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery with Samuel Pruett, Stanley Cush, Edward Badur, Walter Englehart, Raymond Timm and Edward Valentine as pallbearers. BLANCHE DAWSON, Died 19 Feb. 1931 Mrs. Blanche (Hileman) Dawson, age 39, passed away at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Levi Hileman, in Springfield Township at 1:45 o’clock this morning. She had been ill two weeks. Mrs. Dawson was born Nov. 5, 1891, in Springfield Township, the daughter of Levi and Carrie (McNeal) Hileman. On Oct 30, 1912, she was married to Floyd Dawson in Michigan City. Three daughters – Alice Virginia, Doris Fern, and Helen Jane Dawson; three brothers – William Hileman, Charles Hileman, both of Michigan City, and Harvey Hileman of Plymouth, Ind., and one sister, Mrs. Albert (Laura Hileman) Peo, also of Michigan City, survive her. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Michigan City, where funeral services will be held at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon, with the Rev. Donald C. Ford, pastor, officiating. Dawson, Elias S. - Jan. 5, 1922 E. S. Dawson, 82, Dies at Hospital Accident to Aged Man Last Month is Fatal Elias S. Dawson, aged 82 years, for the past forty years a resident of Michigan City, died at St. Anthony's Hospital last evening at 7:10 o'clock.
Death followed the breaking and dislocation of Mr. Dawson's hip, when he fell on a slippery sidewalk, December 23, in front of his home at 1107 East Michigan Street.
Mr. Dawson was born May 24, 1839, in Quebec, Canada. Before coming to Michigan City in the eighties, Mr. Dawson lived in Lowell, Mich., for many years, where he enlisted with the Michigan volunteers for service in the civil war.
Thirty-three years ago Mr. Dawson and Augusta Peo of Michigan City were united in marriage in Michigan City. Mr. Dawson was for many years employed as a guard at the state prison. Besides the widow the deceased is survived by five children, Floyd Dawson, 128 Dewey Street, Mrs. Ernest Vergane, 1004 1/2 East Michigan Street, and Raymond, Herbert and Miss Ruth Dawson, residing at home. The decedent also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Mary Moore and Mrs Carlton Austin of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Mrs. Clossian Knessin of Lowell, Mich. A brother H. F. Dawson, resides at Lowell. Mr. Dawson was a member of the G. A. R. and was well known throughout the city by the older residents. He was a kind husband and a good father and his life was rich in friendship and kindness.

Dawson, 72, 205 Columbia St., died last night at 8:30 at Memorial Hospital. He had been ill for two weeks. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul H. Frankenfeld officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday until the hour of services. A native of Michigan City, he was born Aug. 25, 1897, the son of Elias and Augusta (Peo) Dawson. He was a retired shipping clerk from Hays Corporation. On Oct. 14, 1924, he was married in St. Joseph, Mich., to Lena Pohl, who died Nov. 16, 1964. Survivors include a son, Eugene, and a daughter, Mrs. Hub McCoy, both of Michigan City; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and two sisters – Mrs. Edward (Ruth Dawson) Valentine and Mrs. Raymond (Ethel Dawson) Timm, both of Michigan City. Dawson, Ray - Michigan City News, July 6, 1924, p. 1 Death Claims Ray Dawson, 33 Well Known Michigan City Man Heart Disease Victim Ray Dawson, 33, well known Michigan City young man, died this morning at 1 o'clock at the home of his mother, Mrs. E. S. Dawson, 1107 East Eleventh Street. Death was caused by heart disease, the decedent having been long afflicted and had been bedfast but a week. Mr. Dawson had spent nearly his entire life in Michigan City and his many friends will be sorry to hear of his untimely death. Mr. Dawson was unmarried and besides his mother is survived by two brothers, Floyd and Herbert Dawson, and two sisters, Mrs. E. L. Valentine and Mrs. R. N. Timm, all of this city. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the First Christian church. Rev. D. C. Ford will officiate. The body may be viewed Sunday afternoon and evening and Monday. DEAKO, Walter- - Grand Rapids Press Monday, January 28, 1974, page 6-C Walter Deako, aged 72, formerly of 0-8075 Cottonwood Dr., Jenison, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 1974 at the Beacon Light Nursing home. Mr. Deako was the superintendent at the Jenison Mfg. Co. before his retirement. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Mary) Tillman of Grand Rapids and Mrs. Charles (Madeline) V. Kelsey of Calif.; five grandchildren, one brother Arthur Deako of Ohio; two sisters, Miss Irene Deako of LaPorte, Ind., and Mrs. Ruth Joyce of Michigan City, Ind.; a half brother Jack Byrne of Calif. Mr. Deako reposes at the Grandville Chapel of Cook Funeral Home where funeral services will be held 10am Wednesday, with his pastor the Rev. William Wiltse of the Grandville United Methodist Church officiating. Interment Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, Ind. Masonic services will be held 8pm Tuesday under the auspices of the Crescent Lodge No. 322, F&AM. The family will be at the funeral home 7 to 9 Monday and Tuesday."

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. (EST) Wednesday at the Cook Funeral Home, Grandville, Mich. A graveside service and burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pine Lake Cemetery. Dr. Floyd Blewfield will officiate. Cutler Bros. Funeral Home will be in charge of local arrangements. Mrs. Deako was born at Cassopolis, Mich., Feb 13, 1903, the daughter of David and Minnie Raymond. She was engaged in the millinery business here for 16 years. On June 28, 1924, in South Bend, she was married to Walter Deako, who survives. Werden Deane, an early day resident of Michigan City, died at her late home in Antigo, Wisconsin, last Friday. Mrs. Adele C. Deane widow of the late Major C. Werden Dean died at her home, 622 Clermont street, at 12:45 o'clock this morning. She had been in declining health for a long time and for many weeks had been confined to her bed, devoted friends ministering to her needs and comfort.
The age and date of birth of Mrs. Deane were not known to her most intimate friends but she was born and grew to womanhood at Michigan City, Indiana, her maiden name being Adele C. Woodward. She was married in that city to C. Werden Deane in 1867 (other information states Dec 29, 1866), later moving with him to Chicago. In 1890 they came to Antigo to make their home. Major Deane establishing the C. Werden Deane Abstract company.
Mrs. Deane was a woman of unusual mental brilliance and attainments. She was an active and tireless worker in St. Ambrose Episcopal church and for twenty-five years was president of St. Catherine's Guild. She was also a founder and first president of the Antigo Woman's club organized November 19, 1895. Mrs. Deane served for four years in this capacity being re-elected to the position in 1908, and serving two years more. she is given credit for bringing about the affiliation of the Antigo Woman's club with the Wisconsin State Federation in 1896 and was the recipient of many club honors. For six years she was a member of the Executive Board of the State Federation and served two years as district vice president with credit to herself and to the club. During her presidency the Antigo club entertained the district convention and had as one of the speakers Jane Adam's, whose fame is no of international breadth.
Served as one of the early presidents of the Woman's Missionary Society of the Congregational church and worked efficiently until her own church was established.
Major C. Werden Deane died about two years ago and since that time Mrs. Deane has lived alone. She leaves no immediate relatives.
Funeral services will be held at St. Ambrose church at 3 p. m. Sunday afternoon and burial will take place at Michigan City, Indiana where Major Deane is buried.
A requiem will be said tomorrow morning at seven-thirty o'clock at St. Ambrose church.
The above notice contained in a letter from Rev Cuthbert F. Hinton, which should have been delivered to the News last Saturday, was not received until Sunday morning, hence, not in time to give any public announcement that the remains of Mrs. Deane would arrive here today noon for interment. The remains were accompanied to the city by Rev. Cuthbert F. Hinton, vicar of the Church of St. Ambrose, of which Mr. and Mrs. Deane were members at Antigo, and by Mr. L. E. Clark of Waukegan, Ill., who was a relative of the Deane family.
The remains were met at the depot here by hearse and conveyances from the Earl undertaking establishment and conveyed at once to Greenwood cemetery, where they were laid at rest beside those of the husband, C. Werden Deane, who was buried some 18 months ago.
Mrs. Deane was the daughter of William (correction Warren) Woodward on of the early family settlers in Michigan City and will be well remembered by all our old residents. Mrs. Woodward was a wagon-maker by trade and in the early days conducted a wagon shop just off the east side of Franklin street, where the Kloepfer block now stands. Mrs. Deane was the only child of the Warren Woodward family and was an exceptionally bright young lady.

Woodward of this city. The body was removed to Earl's undertaking parlors, and at 11 o'clock this morning was taken to Greenwood cemetery where the burial took place.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. John Deardorff, he was born in Hicksville, O., on Sept. 30, 1874 and has lived here for four years, coming from Plymouth . He was a railroad telegrapher and agent for 23 years. He was married to Grace Crary on March 25, 1894. She died in January 1933. He was married to Arbie Nichols-Downie in April 1935. He was a member of the North Judson Methodist church. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Harriet G. Lucas, Culver; two sons, John Howard, Elgin , Ill. and Kenneth N. of Downers Grove; one sister Ethel M. Kincade, Gardena Cal. , 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock at the Haverstock chapel with the Rev. C. H. Lininger officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, North Judson. The grandsons will be pallbearers. Friends may call at the chapel tomorrow noon until time of funeral.

Deets, Lydia - Mrs. Lydia Deets - April 30, 1909 Source unknown - Another old and respected resident of Union Mills has passed to that bourne whence no traveler returns. Mrs. Lydia Deets, nee Lyons, died April 30, 1909, in the 91st year of her age. Deceased was born in Lucerne county, Penn., Oct 16, 1818, was married to Joseph Deets, Nov 9, 1848. In 1865 they settled in Union Mills, always residing in the same house in which Mrs. Deets died. Mr. Deets died Oct. 29, 1898, two weeks after enjoying the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary. Of this union eight children were born, two having passed away, Lucy at the age of 12 and Mrs. M.C. Croup, who died about one year ago. The surviving children are Louis, John, and Henry Deets, and Miss Ardie Deets who live at home. Mrs. N.D. McCormick of LaPorte and Mrs. William Freeman of Valparaiso. Funeral service was held Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, Rev. S.E. Smith officiating. N.D. McCormick, M.C. Croup, William Freeman, Harry McCormick, Willie Croup and Joseph Deets acted as Pall-bearers. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte. Burial will be at Rolling Prairie Cemetery, Rolling Prairie. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and until the time of service Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. DePoy was born Feb. 1, 1922, in New Carlisle, to George and Laura Lucille Hooten DePoy. On Dec. 30, 1945, in LaPorte, he married Harriette Marie Walton, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Lindia (Charles) LaFrance, Fish Lake; a son, Greg (Cindy) DePoy, Buchanan, Mich.; two sisters, Margaret Conrad, Mill Creek, and Ruth Kelley, New Carlisle; a brother, Paul DePoy, Rolling Prairie, Ind.; and two stepsisters, Rebecca Eggleston and Katherine Robinson, both of Mishawaka; and six grandchildren. A sister and two brothers preceded him in death. Mr. DePoy was a heavy equipment operator for Schumacher & Sons, and he also was a farmer. He was a member of the Operating Engineer Union Local 150, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, and a member of American Legion Post No. 51, Buchanan, Mich., and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3102, Buchanan. He lived at Ripley, NY, until 1823, when he removed to Prairie Round, Michigan, served in the Michigan militia during the Black Hawk War; removed to Quincy, NY, and operated a store in partnership with Col. Bell; in business at Niles, Michigan, from 1846 to 1850; railroad agent, owned general store, postmaster and justice of the peace at Rolling Prairie, Indiana, 1851 to 1861; removed to Chicago, Illinois, and manufactured brick and operated a general store. Dickson - after a long life remarkable for its sweetness and its inspiring effect upon those who knew her, Mrs. Mary A. Dickson passed away last night at home of her daughter Mrs. William Noble at 908 Monroe Street. She was in her 89th year. For the past 15 years she had been an invalid but had retained her brilliancy of mind and interest in life and those around her to the last. Mrs. Dickson was born in Chautauqua County, New York, August 9, 1827. She was married May 4, 1848 to D. M. Dickson and shortly after removed to Niles, Michigan. From there she came to live in LaPorte county in 1851 and continued to live in this county up to the time of her death except for a period of about 10 years when she was a resident of Kansas City, Mo. This was from 1868 to 1879. Mrs. Dickson was the daughter of John and Elizabeth McHenry. The McHenry's and Dicksons were among the oldest and best-known families of Chautauqua County and played an important part in the history of that section. Her husband, D. M. Dickson, was himself a pioneer, coming to Michigan and later to LaPorte County, Indiana. In the very early days, when this section was just beginning to be settled up, he passed through LaPorte on the way to fight in the Black Hawk Indiana war. Mrs. Dickson's father was the first white child to be born in Chautauqua County.
Mrs. Dickson was known by all the older people in LaPorte, but during the later years of her life many of her friends in fact, nearly all her oldest friends passed away. She was a woman of beautiful character and high ideals and left the impress of her life upon her children and all who came in contact with her. She was of a spiritual and religious nature. She read much and only of the best literature and current publications and was always well informed. Even towards the end of her life when she was unable to leave her home and had to be tenderly cared for, she kept up with current events, showed the greatest interest in the members of her family and those who called to see her was always cheerful. Earlier in life she had been active in church work, but her infirmities obliged her to abandon this. She was a member of the Christian church. Mrs. Dickson was the mother of five children, four of whom are living. A son, Louis Dickson, of Chicago, Frank P. Dickson, of Kansas City, president of the Kansas City, Lawrence & Topeka Electric railroad; Mrs. William Noble of LaPorte, with whom Mrs. Dickson had made her home for many years, and William B. Dickson of Chicago. Mrs. Dickson herself was the oldest of eight children. There yet survive two brothers, Henry McHenry, of Creston, Iowa, and Frank McHenry, of Chicago. The funeral will be held at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon from the Noble residence where simple services will be held. Dr. J.B. Donaldson, of the Presbyterian Church, will officiate and the interment will be in the cemetery at Rolling Prairie. Cutler Bros. Is in charge.

Dolman, Maria, Mrs. - - Westville Indicator, June 15, 1905 - Mrs. Maria Dolman, widow of Joseph Dolman, who died in 1895, passed away at 6 o'clock Sunday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles A. Gifford of Michigan City. Mrs. Dolman had been failing for several months, and for six weeks had been confined to her bed. Her death was due to general debility incident to advanced age. Mrs. Dolman was eighty-four years of age, having been born in Derby, England, February 25, 1821. Her maiden name was Maria Faulkner and she was married to Mr. Dolman in 1841. A few years later they came to America and finally located in Laporte county in 1849. Mr. Dolman was a miller by trade and at different times owned and operated two flouring mills. In 1855 they moved to Michigan City and Mr. Dolman established and conducted what was known for many years as Dolman's mill at the corner of Michigan and Spring streets. Two or three years prior to his death Mr. Dilman sold his mill to A. C. Heitschmidt. Since the death of her husband Mrs. Dolman has made her home with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Gifford. Deceased is survived by three daughters and three sons, as follows: Mrs. C.A. Gifford; Mrs. Harriet McDonald, Michigan City; Mrs. J.N. Smith, Englewood; Herbert Dolman, Colombus, O.; Edward Dolman, Wanatah; Joseph Dolman of this place, all of whom were present at the last rites. The funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the home, Rev. A.J. Wailer officiating and the burial took place in Greenwood cemetery.

DONNELLY - Herndon W. DONNELLY is buried in grave 7, Lot #257 of the Old Northern Woods section at Pine Lake Cemetery. He was buried 24 May 1972. His Veterans Graves Registration Form shows his residence as 508 Detroit Street, La Porte; next of kin, daughter Mrs. Linda KIESMAN, La Porte; born Sept. 8, 1916 at Logan County, Kentucky.
His date of death was May 22, 1972 and cause was illness. He served in the U. S. Army, Medical Detachment, WWII and his rank was Pfc. He enlisted Dec. 15, 1942 and was discharged Nov. 22, 1946.
His obituary was purblished in the La Porte HERALD-ARGUS. It reports his deah at Pine Lake Division Hospital at 8:33 a.m. and that he had been ill for nine years. Cuter Funeral Home was in charge of the burial and Rev. Robert J. Burgbacher officiated. His parents were Arthur and Florence (BAGBY) Williams DONNELLY. He came to La Porte from Chicago and lived in La Porte for 25 years. He had been a mortician in Michigan for 15 years. In La Porte, he worked at Modine Mfg. Co. (on Brighton Street). He was a member of the First Baptist Church and Post #83 of the American Legion. Three daughters survived: Mrs. Linda KIESMAN, La Porte; Mrs. Sandra GREENWALT, San Diego, CA; and Miss Cynthia K. DONNELLY, at home; one son, Craig DONNELLY, Griffith, IN. Also surviving were his mother and one sister, Mrs. Neil HARMSEN, Chicago. On his grave are two (2) veteran markers: one is an upright marker and the other is a flat bronze marker in the ground. Buried in grave 6 is Edna Louise DONNELLY. She was buried 08 Aug 1951. Haverstock Funeral Home was in charge. There are no open graves on this lot and no other DONNELLY is buried here. Cynthia Donnelly-Watson states - Edna was Dad's little sister. The family called her Louise. She died, as I was told, from TB. My father was not a mortician. I don't know why the family insisted on saying that. When he met my mother, he was driving a bread truck and later drove ambulance and furniture truck for Connelly Funeral Home in Cassopolis, MI. Connelly also owned the furniture store in town. The Modine part is right though. Anyway, I was going to do a short biography so I will fill in the missing and erroneous blanks my family insisted on. Gram's name of Williams was from her second marriage to Robert E. Williams Sr as Arthur Donnelly died in the flu epidemic of 1918 down in Russellville, KY, She is also the mother of another veteran there at Pine Lake, Robert E. Williams JR. from that second marriage.Downing, Eliza - Mrs. Eliza Downing dies this morning at the home of her son, Luther Downing, in Kankakee township. She was 81 years old. She leaves a large family of children and relatives to mourn her loss. The funeral services will be held at 10:30 Friday morning at her late home, Rev. Grisso officiating. Burial at Pine Lake. W.C. Mrs. Drader was born Nov. 17, 1918, in Bantry, N.D., the daughter of Charles and Edith Healey Heath. On July 18, 1935, in Tower, N.D., she married George N. Drader, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Dale (June) Drader, Hanna, LeRoy (Judy) Drader, Brunswick, Ga., and D. Three sisters preceded her in death. Mrs. Drader retired in 1981 from Wirekraft, where she had worked as a respooler. She also had worked at Kingsbury Ordnance Plant during World War II and then at Continental Diamond in Valparaiso. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Galien, Mich., the Senior Citizen Clubs of Westville and Wanatah, and the Farm Bureaus of Hanna and New Prairie. She was a volunteer at LaPorte Hospital, and had lived in the Westville area for four years after coming from Hanna. She formerly lived in LaPorte. He was a Westville resident for four years, coming from Hanna. A graveside service is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Mills Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Pennington officiating. He was born April 22, 1912, in Tower, N.D., to James and Joanne (Wager) Drader. On July 18, 1935, in Tower, he married Beatrice L. Heath, who died Feb. 8, 1998. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley (Ted) Beveridge, Wanatah; three sons, Dale (June) Drader, Hanna, LeRoy (Judy) Drader, Brunswick, Ga., and Gene (Patricia) Drader, Houghton Lake, Mich.; one brother, John Drader, Mishawaka, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Also preceding Mr. Drader in death were five sisters and six brothers. Mr. Drader retired in 1978 after 31 years at Allis Chalmers Corp. as a press operator. He had also worked in the past at Kingsbury Ordnance Plant. Mr. Drader belonged to the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints of Galien, Mich. He belonged to the Farm Bureau of Hanna and New Prairie, volunteered at LaPorte Hospital, was a retired member of the UAW and a member of the Senior Citizen Clubs of Westville and Wanatah. Drinen, of 1304 Illinois avenue, died at 1:30 this morning at her home aged 61 years. The daughter of John and Mary Schlaffe, s he was born in Bern, Switzerland, on May 5, 1883 and had lived here about 24 years, coming from Billings, Mont. One Sept 23, 1904 in Marysville, Kansas, she was married to James A. Drinen who survives. She was a member of the German-Lutheran church in Frankfort, Kansas, and of the Royal neighbors. Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Mrs. Irma Christie, LaPorte, and Mrs. Vona Held, Long Island N. Y.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews - two brothers and two sisters residing in Kansas. One daughter died in July 1941. Mrs. Leva Minnie Dudeck, 72, of Galena township, died at 7:30 p.m. yesterday at her home on route 1, Three Oaks. She had been ill for several years.
Mrs. Dudeck was born in Galena township on Oct. 16, 1886, to William and Alva Dudeck (note print error -- s/b William & Alva Brown).
She was married April 14, 1921 in LaPorte to George Dudeck, who is her only survivor. Mrs. Dudeck had lived in her present home for 38 years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the H.B. Connelly Funeral home, Three Oaks. Burial will be in Foster cemetery in Galena township south of Three Oaks. Friends may call at the funeral home today and until time of services.Duncan, Emma - News Dispatch, Michigan City, IN
LaPORTE - Emma L. Duncan, 77, LaPorte, died at 3:25 p.m. Sunday (June 25, 2000) at Miller's Merry Manor, Walkerton, Ind.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Steven Brey officiating. Cremation will take place. Burial of the ashes will take place at a later date.
Visitation will be from noon until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Duncan was born May 28, 1923, in LaPorte, to LeRoy and Mary Tappan Davis.
On April 1, 1944, in Michigan City, she married Charles Duncan, who preceded her in death July 3, 1995.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Barnes and Betty Nowicki, both of LaPorte; four grandchildren; one sister, Jessie Sheeley, of Michigan; three brothers, Eugene Davis, Palos Hill, Ill., and Clifford Davis and Donald Davis, both of LaPorte.
Two sisters, Dorothy Swanson and Lillian Fleenor, and one brother, George A. Davis, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Duncan was a housewife and a member of Lamb's Chapel United Methodist Church.

Dyer died at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at her home, 219 1/2 Spring street of cancer of the stomach after an illness of two months. She was 66 years old and a native of New York. She had lived in this city forty-five years. Her husband, George Dyer, was killed in the civil war. Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. Alice Lyons of Laporte, and two sons, Perry Dyer of Aurora, Ill., and George Dyer of this city. The funeral was held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning from St. Mary's church. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
Dysard, Alexander - Obit from Oct 14, 1936 Alex Dysard, 84, Pioneer Farm Resident, Dies
Alexander Dysard, 84, a pioneer resident of Coolspring township, died at 4 o'clock this morning, at his home, 213 1/2 Green Street, after and illness of two months. Death was due to complications.
The deceased was born in Coolspring Township, July 3, 1852, the son of John Dysard who was born in Ireland and Ester Turner Dysard of England. He was a farmer almost his entire life and had a great number of friends.
On May 12, 1880 he was married in Michigan City to Mary E. Schultz, who survives. A son, Harry of Michigan City, and two daughters, Mrs. Oliver Eifler, Chicago and Mrs. Clarence Moldenhauer of Michigan City, 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren also survive. A daughter, Mrs. Herman Hibner is deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Saturday afternoon with Rev. A. T. buckler officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hummer funeral home Friday afternoon and evening and on Saturday until the hour of the funeral.

She was born in Caven county Ireland in the year 1819 and emigrated to America in 1833 and resided in Brooklyn for two years. She then removed to Orange county, New York and then to LaPorte in 1838, she was married to John Dysard the same year. In addition to Mr. Dysard her husband the following children survive her: Mrs. W. O. Leeds, Mrs. Belle Smith, who resided in Idaho, Mrs. Francis Rhigway of San Francisco, and John, James and Joseph Dysard. The funeral occurs tomorrow from the family residence, Rev J. J. Faude of Trinity church officiating.

Passing away of John Dysard aged Ninety Years Death came to him peacefully and suddenly - one of the Oldest Residents in the County Came here in 1837. Uncle John Dysard, as he is familiarly known, one of the oldest and best known residents in the county, died at his boarding house, 123 East Michigan street, Sunday afternoon abt 2 o'clock. Mr. Dysard passed peacefully to rest without a struggle, his demise being more the affects of old age than of any affliction of disease.
He had been ill more or less the past winter, from a cold and grip but had rallied from this and was able to be about upon the streets. He retired Saturday evening as well as usual and late Sunday morning, when Mrs. Highfield, with whom he boarded, took his breakfast to his room which was the custom, he not usually arising for breakfast, he then appeared to be as well as usual. When dinner was ready, he had not made his appearance and Mrs. Highfield went to his room to call him. He was still in bed and did not respond to her call. She at once noticed that his breath was unnatural and that he was apparently expiring. Assistance was called his relatives were notified. Dr. Wilson was also summoned, but before he arrived Mr. Dysard's spirit had taken its flight, and he was beyond all earthly help He died with apparent ease and without a struggle death coming almost as he slept.
Uncle John Dysard was a native of Dublin, Ireland, where he was born June 15th 1808, and had he lived until next June he would have been 91 years of age. He came to America in 1833, stopping in New York. In 1837 he came to this county with the corps of Engineers surveying the line of the Lake Shore road. He located in Michigan City at that time and has ever since been a resident of this city and vicinity. He was well known all over the county.
Mr. Dysard was married in 1838 to miss Esther Turner, of this city, who departed this life some fifteen years ago. To the union were born twelve children, seven of whom survive their father. The children are Mrs. E. Smith, of Idaho; Mrs. W. O. Leeds, this city; John, of South Dakota; James and Alexander, both residing near this city; Joseph, of Kingsbury, and Mrs. Jerry Ridgeway living at LaPorte.
Mr. Dysard was a well-known resident of the county, being in his early days an active worker in the affairs of the county. He was a well read man and kept pace with the news of the day not only locally but with state and national affairs. He was possessed of a remarkable memory, and was a veritable living encyclopedia upon matters of public interest. He was of a genial disposition, always good-natured, had a joke at his tongue's end at any time and enjoyed receiving a joke as well as passing one. He was an honorable, conscientious man, a warm friend and a good citizen. His death will be universally mourned by all his old associates and acquaintances. He was a member of the Episcopal church.
The funeral of the late John Dysard took place Tuesday afternoon from the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. O. Leeds, on Spring Street. The services were well attended by friends of the family and the old acquaintances of Mr. Dysard. Dr. L.T. Cole, of Trinity church, officiated and the services were beautiful and impressive.

Dysard was born in LaPorte County, Indiana November 28, 1844 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. C. Dodds in Saranac, Michigan Sept. 9, 1925. He was a son of John and Esther Dysard and was one of a family of eight children, five boys and three girls. His early life was spent on a farm near LaPorte, Ind., and in September 1861, he answered the call of his country for volunteers and became a private in the 4th Battery of Indiana Light Artillery. He served nearly three years, was wounded at Chattanooga and received his honorable discharge from there.
He returned home and on July 1, 1868 (Webmasters note: Marriage in Kendall County, Illinois) was united in marriage to Miss Miraette Jacobs of Michigan City, Indiana. To this Union five children were born: Joseph of Grangeville, Idaho; Frank of Hecla, South Dakota; Fred of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs. E. D. Dodds of Saranac, Michigan. One child died in infancy. In 1884 after being urged by relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Dysard moved to Hecla, SD, where they located on a homestead, 34 miles from the nearest railroad at Columbia. Here their children grew up and endured with them, all the hardships of pioneer life that, were necessary to change those trackless prairies into the beautiful farms of today.
Late in life they moved to Hecla and here amongst many friends close by the church they had chosen as their own, they resided for sixteen years, enjoying the rest as dearly earned. When Mrs. Dysard's health began to fail, she longed to be near her only daughter, and so they moved to Saranac in 1920. Here at the home of her daughter she died Nov 22, 1922. He had been in his usual health and remarked when he came in to breakfast Wednesday morning, that he felt better than usual. During the forenoon he wrote a letter to one of his sons. Towards noon he was suddenly taken very sick and lived only a short time.
He was 80 years, 10 months and 12 days of age. Besides his three sons and one daughter he leaves to mourn their loss, twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also one brother Alex Dysard, Michigan City, Ind., and two sisters, Mrs. Frances Rigeway, LaPorte, Ind. and Mrs. Belle, Smith, Grangerville, Idaho.
The remains were taken to Michigan City, Ind. Monday morning and the funeral was held from the home of his brother, Alex Dysard, that after at 3:00 o'clock. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.Joseph W. She was married in Michigan City May 12, 1880 to Alexander Dysard, who died Oct 14, 1936.

She was the daughter of William and Almira Jacobs and was the fourth of a family of twelve children. All her early life was spent in the vicinity of Michigan City and it was to a companion of her early childhood, John Dysard, also a resident of Michigan City, that she was united in marriage on July 1, 1868. To this union five children were born, Joseph of Grangeville, Idaho, Frank of Hecla, SD, Fred of Minet, ND and Mrs. E. C. Dodds of Saranac, Michigan, one child having preceded their mother in departing this life. In 1884, Mr. and Mrs. Dysard at the solicitation of a relative, moved to South Dakota, where they located on a homestead east of Hecla, 34 miles from the nearest town and railroad point, Columbia. There they resided some years, sturdily enduring the tests of courage incident to pioneer life on the open trackless prairies of Dakota Territory. in the course of events the farm home was removed to a new situation west of Hecla, where the family resided many years and succeeded in establishing themselves in comfort and plenty, only to retire therefrom as age advanced and they indulged the natural desire to be relieved from the labors that had engaged them thru so many years in faithful effort. For upwards of sixteen years the deceased presided over the little home in Hecla beside the church that had won her heart with such evident good effect and beneficence to family and friends that she was respected and beloved by all. Her span of life was graciously extended to permit her to see the fruition of her faith in the west. Open space without limit became the closely settled countryside with here and there and everywhere evidences of comfort and prosperity. Waste and barren places came to be occupied by grove and field and the whole scene changed. And with the lapse of the ripening years her life ever became more serene and kindly and she cherished with constantly increasing devotion the labors of love found in the Master's service. With the coming of failing health her heart wearied with longing for the scenes of her childhood and so in company with her husband she wended her way to those places, where her last days were made quietly contented while she awaited the summons,. in the tender care of husband and daughter.
