Kingsbury Grade
and High School - In 1904 many of the citizens of Kingsbury wanted
a new school. There was much discussion and some conflicts amoung
the county commissioners. A decision was then made to divide the
coporation and which forth the inception of Washington township. The
first trustee of the township
was Dr. H. H. Long of Union township and on June 26, 1904 he signed the
papers for the erection of the new school. C. O Larson of Laporte was
awarded the
building contract. In 1926 and addition was added consisting of an
auditorium and several classrooms. Daniel Winholt was school trustee at
that time.
Prior to this, the school was a three year high school with students
being allowed to attend LaPorte or Union Mills for their senior year.
With the completion of the addtion Kingsbury became a four year high
school. (see the graduation 1929 listing below for the first senior
graduate
to recieve diploma's for their senior year.)
Another addition was
necessary in 1936 due to the growing population in the school district.
Holmes school which was in the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant area.
It was dismantled and the brick from that school was used in this
adddition. The late Frank A. Oakes was the trustee then.
In 1964 Kingsbury
school area became part of the LaPorte Community School District. All
Junior and Senior school students would attend school in LaPorte.
The elementary grades would remain at the school. The in 1970 a new
elementary school was built. And the student would attend it for the
first time in September of that year.
The old school became property of the LaPorte Community School
District.
Due to attrition and other factors, the old school was torn down during the week of November 7, 1971 and a Kingsbury landmark was bid farewell.
