Descendants of Francis Purier

Generation No. 1

1.  FRANCIS2 PURIER  (?1 PORIER)1 was born Abt. 1788 in Knox County, IN, and died Bef. 1860.  He married (1) TEENA BAKER March 26, 1815 in Knox County, IN.    He married (2) NANCY LEMONTAIN April 24, 1818 in Knox County, IN2.  She was born Abt. 1802 in Knox County, IN3, and died Aft. 1860.

Notes for FRANCIS PURIER:

Possible birth record for Francois? February 20, 1791  ...baptized Francoise, natural child of Morisse, slave of Mr. Peraut and Laitte, slave of Mr. Mequintoche.  This is taken from the parish record of St. Francis Xavier of Vincennes, in the Indiana State Library microfilm.  This was the only negro Francois found from 1787 to 1791, I believe.

Originally his name was shown in records as being Francois; later it shows as Francis. The 1830 census shows both his and Toussaint Purry’s last names as "Powers". Living in this household in the 1830 census were: 1 male between 10 and 23 yrs old, 1 male between 24 and 35 yrs old, 1 male between 36 and 54 yrs, 1 male between 55 and 99 yrs old; 1 female under 10; 1 female between 10 and 23 yrs old; 1 female between 36 and 54.

In the 1840 Census, he is shown on p. 67 of the Knox County records as Puryer, Francis, according to an online index of this census.

In the 1850 IN Census, "Trousway Perway" is shown as being a 60 year-old laborer. His wife is shown as being "Mary" who is 58 years old.  All these children are shown: Francis (23-year-old male), Touissant (26-year-old male), David (21-year-old male), Jane (15-year-old female), Samuel (16-year-old male), Rachael (11-year-old female), Sarah (9-year-old female), Eliza (6-year-old female).  Only Mary is not shown in the 1850 Census.  Also showing is Elizabeth Ritchey, age 17.  Since it is believed that both Eliza and Mary married into the Ritchey family, could it be that 3 of these daughters married into the same family? Or is Elizabeth Ritchey this person's birth name? No spouse is shown as living there.  Other non-family members shown for this household in this census are William Headson(?), age 14 and John Campbell, age 7.

Indiana Negro Registry shows that on August 6, 1853, Frances Purier registered as a 65-year-old mulatto, 5 ft 8-1/2 ins., 145 lbs, light complexion, grey headed, slim.

In Marriage Records of Knox County, Indiana, 1807-1840, his name is shown as Francois Porier.

Notes for TEENA BAKER:

A marriage application at least was filed in 1815 for Teena Baker and Francois Porier. It is unknown if this marriage took place.

Notes for NANCY LEMONTAIN:

In the Indiana Negro Registers,1852-1865, Nancy (Lamount) Purier is shown as being a 52-year-old mulatto woman, small, light complexion, hair almost straight. She registered on Aug. 15, 1854.

The 1860 Census shows a Nancy Purrey in Vincennes, IN. ID# on ancestry.com database is IN377179167 while Tusant Purrey's ID is IN377179168.

Children of FRANCIS PURIER and NANCY LEMONTAIN are:

2.                i.    FRANCIS PURIER3 JR., b. Abt. 1826.

3.               ii.    TUSANT PURRY, b. Abt. 1823.

                 iii.    DAVID PURRY4, b. Abt. 18295,6; d. January 13, 1907, Vincennes, IN.

Notes for DAVID PURRY:

David is shown as a "Laborer" with a family of another name in 1850 Census.  He also shows as a boarder in the home of a white family Thomas P. Bickes or Beckes. His occupation is farm laborer and he is shown as being a mulatto. Two other blacks, James Ritchie (?) and Andrew  ???, are shown as farm laborers who are servants in the family.

David is shown in the 1860 Census with the other children of Francois and Nancy Purry. Nancy is still alive, but Francois is not in the Census.

A David Purrier is shown as a teamster who boards at 808 N. 12th in the 1883 Vincennes City Directory.

In 1900 IN Census, Vincennes City, SD 2, EN 55, Sheet 14A through 14B, David Purrie is shown as living with with great-niece, Margaret Ann Purry Gordon, and her husband and family.  He is 70 years old and single.

Generation No. 2

2.  FRANCIS PURIER3 JR. (FRANCIS2 PURIER, ?1 PORIER)9 was born Abt. 182610.

Notes for FRANCIS PURIER JR.:

In Indiana Negro Registry, he is shown as being a mulatto man, 5 ft 9-3/4 ins, 175 lbs, light complexion.

Child of FRANCIS PURIER JR. is:

                   i.    FRANCIS PURIER4 JR., b. Abt. 184911.

Notes for FRANCIS PURIER JR.:

In the Indiana Negro Registry, he is shown as being a mulatto boy, 3 ft 2 ins, very light, hair light, and "not much curly". Date registered Aug. 8, 1853.

A Frances M. Puryear shows in the 1900 Missouri Census, as a white male, born in 1843 in Tennesee. In Missouri, his record is for Finley Township, Webster County, SD 8, ED 134, sheet 10. His spouse is Mary E., born 1864. Children are Robert W., born 1888; Samuel E., born 1889; Harry A., born 1892; Frances E., born 1894; Susie, born 1896. The spouse and all children are listed as being born in Missouri. Living next door was Samuel Puryear also showing as a white male born in Tennesse in 1833. Living with him is his sister, Amelia A. Puryear, born 1834 who is white. Also living in this house is a black female servant, born 1848, who is named Lou Puryear who was born in Virginia.

3.  TUSANT3 PURRY (FRANCIS2 PURIER, ?1 PORIER)12,13 was born Abt. 182313.  He married (2) JANE ?13.  She was born Abt. 1823.

Notes for TUSANT PURRY:

Young Touissant is shown as living in the same household as David Purrey with a group of people whose last names are different (Marshall, Crooks, Hubbs, Hawkins, Enison). Some of these people appear to be white. Only the Hubbs and the two Purreys are listed as black. Young Touissant is shown to be employed as a Laborer.

On August 6, 1853, Tousant Purier Jr., registered with the Indiana Negro Registry. He was 28 years old, and described as follows: "Mulatto man, 5 ft 7-3/4 ins, 173 lbs, stout, heavy built, light."

An Amanda Pury is shown as marrying B. Hubbs on Dec. 7, 1868 (Book G--- 306). Aaron Hubbs was one of the blacks listed in the same household as young Touisant and David Purry in 1850. Benjamin Hubbs registered in the Indiana Negro Registers at the same time as Aaron Hubbs and appears to be one of his brothers.

The 1850 IN Census shows Toussant Burway as a 38-year-old male, married to Jane. He is a laborer, owning $150 worth of real estate.

The 1860 IN Census shows Tusant as a farmer, mulatto male, who is 37.  Living with him are presumably several of his brothers and sister, his mother, and several boarders.

The 1870 IN Census index shows a 55-year-old Tousant Puryer M593 Roll, 331 Part 0, Page 99.  He was a day laborer in the town of Palmyra, working and living on the farm of Garrett Tonbrook.

Children of TUSANT PURRY are:

                   i.    GEORGE4 PURRY, b. Abt. 184914; m. (1) MARGARET ANN RUBLE15; b. Abt. 1857; m. (2) ELIZABETH [UNKNOWN], October 17, 1867, Vincennes, IN16; b. Abt. 1849; m. (3) LAURA DAVIS, December 24, 1877, Vincennes, IN17.

Notes for GEORGE PURRY:

There is no reason to put George, Elizabeth, and Charles as children of Tusant Purry. They registered in the Indiana Negro Registers with the family of Eliza Springs and with the Hays family.  George is described as a 4-year-old negro boy of dark complexion, thick lips, 3'3", 50 lbs. He registered on Aug 30, 1853.

1870 IN Census shows a 23-year-old George Purry, M593-roll, 331, part 0 p. 197

Notes for MARGARET ANN RUBLE:

Not sure if this is the right George Purier to match Margaret Ruble with or not.

Notes for ELIZABETH [UNKNOWN]:

Her divorce affidavit says that first George was seen walking arm-in-arm about the city with a white woman named Ms. Askew, then he committed adultery with Ms. Askew, then on Oct. 13, 1876, he eloped and fled to Terre Haute with Ms. Askew and Sam Purrie (who was also with an unnamed white woman).  It also says that she, Elizabeth, is a house servant, and prior to that time was a washer woman. It says that George had made no provisions for her for the past few months other than to buy 25 cents worth of meat for her.

Notes for LAURA DAVIS:

Not sure if I'm matching Laura Davis with the right George Purrier or not.

ii.    ELIZABETH PURRY, b. Abt. 184418.

Notes for ELIZABETH PURRY:

There is no reason to put George, Elizabeth, and Charles as children of Tusant Purry. They registered in the Indiana Negro Registers with the family of Eliza Springs and with the Hays family.  Elizabeth is described as a 9-year-old negro girl of dark color, thick lips, 4'4", scar on knee. She registered on Aug 30, 1853.

                 iii.    CHARLES PURRY, b. Abt. 1844, Indiana19; m. LUE SALTERS, August 11, 1875, Vigo County, IN20; b. Abt. 1851, Indiana.

Notes for CHARLES PURRY:

There is no reason to put George, Elizabeth, and Charles as children of Tusant Purry. They registered in the Indiana Negro Registers with the family of Eliza Springs and with the Hays family.  Charles is described as a 9-year-old negro boy, quite dark, 4'3", blind in right eye, thick lips.  He is totally different from the 13-year-old Charles Purier who registered on Aug 3, 1853. He registered on Aug 30, 1853.

On May 3, 1900, Charles L Purrier sold to Mary L. Snell part of lot 476 for $1. This is recorded in Knox County Book 29, p. 32.  On Oct. 2, 1900, the same transaction is recorded in Deed Book 28, p. 325-6, for the same amount of money.

Notes for LUE SALTERS:

In 1881 Vincennes City Directory, Mrs. Lue Puryea shows as living in the same address as Charles Puryea, W S 10th 3 N of Wabash Ave.

On Oct. 18, 1887, Mrs. Lue Purrier bought from Mary Beard, lot 476. She paid $400 for it. This is recorded in the Knox County Deed Book 8, p. 618.

Is this Lucinda Purrier who died in Vincennes on March 26, 1894 at age 57? There's also a record of a Lucinda Purrier (married) who died March 26, 1896 at age 47. Probably one of these is a typo.

                 iv.    AMANDA PURRY21, b. Abt. 1848; m. BENJAMIN HUBBS22, December 7, 1868, Vincennes, IN23; b. Abt. 1843, Vincennes, IN24.

Notes for AMANDA PURRY:

The only reason why I'm putting Amanda with this parent is because she lives next to George Purry when they are both married. This may be totally bogus!

Amanda shows as a 22-year-old mulatto who is keeping house in 1870.

Notes for BENJAMIN HUBBS:

Indiana Negro Registry shows that he registered on Sept 3 1853. He is described as 12 years old, tolerably heavy built, dark complexion.  In the 1870 Census he is shown as being a black laborer who is 27 years old.

Living with them is Lee Crutchlow, age 25, a mulatto farm laborer who is named as correspondent in the divorce proceedings of John Purry vs. Eliza Purry in 1867.  Also living with them is Anna Hubbs, age 28, and Aaron John, age 20, a s. boat laborer.

Children of TUSANT PURRY and JANE ? are:

                  v.    MARY A.4 PURRY, b. Abt. 183925.

Notes for MARY A. PURRY:

Mary shows as an 11-year-old girl in the 1850 IN Census.

vi.    JOSEPH PURRY, b. Abt. 184425.

Notes for JOSEPH PURRY:

Joseph shows as a 6-year-old boy in the 1850 IN Census.

vii.    TOUSANT PURRY, b. Abt. 184725.

Notes for TOUSANT PURRY:

Tousant shows as a 3-year-old boy in the 1850 IN Census.

viii.    CHARLES PURRY, b. Abt. 185025.

Notes for CHARLES PURRY:

Charles shows as a 6-month-old baby in the 1850 IN Census.

ix.    ALEXANDER DESHEAU, b. Abt. 183825.

Notes for ALEXANDER DESHEAU:

This unknown child shows as a 12-year-old boy in the 1850 IN Census. The spelling of the last name may be in error.

4.  ELIZA3 PURRY (FRANCIS2 PURIER, ?1 PORIER)26 was born Abt. 1844 in Indiana27, and died June 1884 in Indiana.  She married ROLLINS RICHEY28 February 15, 1873 in Vincennes, IN29.  He was born 1848 in Indiana30, and died Bef. 1920.

Notes for ELIZA PURRY:

The Indiana Negro Registry shows a 10-year-old Eliza Purier registering on Aug 15, 1854. Description: mulatto girl, spare built light complexion, straight hair.

Grandchildren shown in 1910 IN Census with Rollins Ritchie and new wife Nancy are Melanklon Ritchey, 9-year-old grandson, born Aug. 1890, and Robert L. Ritchie, 7-year-old grandson born Oct. 1892. Keep this one in mind:

Notes for ROLLINS RICHEY:

The Indiana Negro Registry shows Rollins Richey as being a 5-year-old boy in September 1853.  He is described as "Negro boy, slender built, dark complexion".

The 1880 IN Census shows Rollins Richey as being 32 years old, a farmer labourer, who is married to Eliza, also 32 (?).

5.  MARY E.3 PURRY (FRANCIS2 PURIER, ?1 PORIER) was born December 1847 in Indiana.  She married DANIEL RICHEA, son of ABRAM RICHEY and HANNAH ?.  He was born Abt. 1837 in Knox County, IN, and died Aft. 1900.

Notes for MARY E. PURRY:

It appears that this Mary Purry might have married Daniel Ritchey, based on her birthdate given in 1860 Census when she lived at home (1842) and later when she and Daniel show on the 1900 Census (1847). 1900 IN Census, Knox County, Harrison Township, SD 2, ED 45, Sheet 10A, line 38. The census says her mother was born in Virginia, but that might just be some bad info that was brought down from the line on which Daniel's information appears.  The 1880 Census shows Mary E. as being a 37-year-old black woman, married to Daniel, and keeping house. It says that both of her parents were born in Indiana.

In 1881, Mrs. Mary Ritchie lives at the SE corner of 4th & Bayou according to the Vincennes City Directory.

Notes for DANIEL RICHEA:

According to the Indiana Negro Registers, Daniel was a 16-year-old Negro boy, tall slim built, red spot left thumb, dark complexion, on Sept. 3, 1853. Relationship to his parents is assumed based on the proximity of registration.

The 1860 IN Census shows the Richey family as living 2 households away from the Purry family that Mary is in.

The 1880 IN Census shows Daniel as being a 41-year-old farmer.

Children of MARY PURRY and DANIEL RICHEA are:

                   i.    FANNIE4 RICHEA, b. November 186035.

Notes for FANNIE RICHEA:

Since the 1900 Census shows that Fannie is 39 and it shows that Daniel Richie and Mary Richie had been married for 30 years and that Mary is only 52, perhaps Fannie is Mary's step-daughter. The census does show that Mary has given birth to one child and that this child is living at the time. The 1880 Census shows Fannie as being 10 years old and Mary (her mother) as being 37 years old. Perhaps the 1900 census should have shown Fannie as being 29 years old.

                  ii.    WILLIAM W RICHEA, b. Abt. 186236; m. QUEEN ANN COX, May 7, 1896, Knox County, IN37; b. Abt. 187338.

Notes for WILLIAM W RICHEA:

This child is not shown on the 1880 IN Census with the rest of the children. The relationship is gleaned from his marriage transcript in 1896.  Re-check that transcript for the age, which I think was 34 yrs old.

                 iii.    GEORGE W. RICHEA, b. Abt. 186739.

Notes for GEORGE W. RICHEA:

The 1880 IN Census shows George as working on the farm when he was a 13-year-old boy.

I found a white George Richey with family living in Scott County, IN in the 1900 Census. Another white one in Rush County, IN. Another in  Brooke County, WV. One in Lawrence County, IL.

iv.    EMMA RICHEA, b. Abt. 186839.

                  v.    CHARLES E. RICHEA, b. Abt. 187239.

6.  SAMUEL3 PURIER (FRANCIS2, ?1 PORIER) was born Abt. 1836 in Knox County, IN40.  He married MARY ? June 13, 1872 in Knox County, IN41.  She was born Abt. 1850 in Kentucky.

Notes for SAMUEL PURIER:

Indiana Negro Registers on Aug. 15, 1854, 18-year-old Samuel Purier registered with Nancy Purier and her children. He is shown as being a mulatto man, tall slim, light complexion, injured toe left foot.

On August 5, 1876, a divorce affidavit was filed saying that Samuel "flourished a razer" near his wife (Mary's) esophagus, duodenum, colon, and other vitals, and with great "veheminance and fierce ejaculations", he terrified almost the life out of her.  It also said that he provided no support for her and her children since January 1, 1875, and that he was a habitual drunkard.

A Samuel Puryear shows up in Webster County, Missouri in the 1880 & 1900 Census. He is listed as white, born in 1833 in Tennesse. He has a white sister named Amelia and a black servant named Lou Puryear. They live next to Francis Puryear (born 1843) and his family, also listed as white.

Notes for MARY ?:

Mary Purrier filed a petition for divorce against Sammuel Purrie in the fall of 1875. She was working as a washer woman at that time. She shows on the 1880 IN Soundex and on the 1880 IN Census Vol 18 SD 131 Sheet 40 and line 16 with her children Fred (age 7) and Kate (age 5). Boarders in her house were John Smith and George Karener. Does she later marry John Smith?

Children of SAMUEL PURIER and MARY ? are:

                   i.    FREDDIE4 PURIER, b. 187242.

                  ii.    KATIE PURIER, b. 187442.

7.  GEORGE3 PURRY (FRANCIS2 PURIER, ?1 PORIER)43 was born Abt. 1820 in Indiana44.  He married (1) MARGARET A. RUBLE October 18, 1845 in Knox County, IN.  She was born Abt. 182745.  He married (2) ISABEL RUSK July 1, 1865 in Vincennes, IN46.  She was born Abt. 1844 in Indiana.

Notes for GEORGE PURRY:

What am I basing this relationship on? One clue I have is in the Indiana Negro Registry where it describes George Purier as being a 31-year-old mulatto man, 5'11-1/2", 170 lbs, light complexion stout, on Aug 8, 1853. Francois' children were generally described as mulatto; while Toussaint's children were generally described as dark.  Also he registered with other children of Francois: Elizabeth Bellier and David Purier.  The other clue is that in the 1850 IN Census, he lived next door to Francois Purrier (I believe).  The final clue is that his daughter Margaret Ann is shown in the 1900 IN Census in a household where David Purrier (born 1829) is listed as an uncle.

1870 IN Census, Vincennes City, Knox County, p. 98, line 37. George W. Purry shows as a 50-year-old farm laborer owning no real estate, but having personal property worth about $200.  His wife, Isabel, is 26 years old and his oldest child is 18.

The 1850 IN Census shows him as George Peryear.

Marriage records show George W. Poryer and Margaret Ann Ruble being married in 1845.

Notes for MARGARET A. RUBLE:

Indiana State Library Marriage Database shows groom and bride:

PORYER,  GEORGE W and  RUBLE,  MARGARET ANN (COLORED), married in  Knox  County on  10-16-1845

Children of GEORGE PURRY and MARGARET RUBLE are:

1870 IN Census shows 22-year-old Amanda Hubbs, M593-Roll, 331, Part 0, p. 197

Also living with them is Anna Hubbs, age 28, and Aaron John, age 20, a s. boat laborer.

                 vi.    MARGARET PURRY58, b. Abt. 1860; m. HARRY GORDON; b. Abt. 1849; d. August 18, 1917, Vincennes, IN59.

Notes for MARGARET PURRY:

In 1900 Census, Margaret Ann Gordon is shown as having mothered 10 children, 7 of which were still living at that time.

I believe that this Harry and Margaret Ann Gordon are the same as Harry and Ann Gordon. It seems that they married at the same time, and it seems that George Purry is the father of both. I believe that Amanda is also a sister of Margaret Ann Purry Gordon.  David Purry is shown as the uncle of this family in the 1900 IN Census and he was born in 1929. I think these two need to be merged, but be sure to retain the information for both in the merger.

Notes for HARRY GORDON:

Harry and Margaret Ann Gordon show as living in Vincennes in the 1900 Indiana Census, SD 2, EN 55, Sheet 14A - 14B.  Living with them is the uncle of Margaret, David Purrier, who was born July 1829, presumably her great-uncle.

Harry's occupation at the time of his death was a teamster. He lived at 1317 Perry St.
