Notes for LEONIDAS AYERS:

From They Say and Do In The Country by Charles E. Eberhart, Madison Courier, June 28,1938.

Leonidas Zener Ayers, Mrs. Stewart's brother, had earlier told the writer much that was confirmed by his sister. He added some matters she overlooked. Among other things he called attention to the widespread scattering of mulberry trees though the district at one time, but that a blight of some kind was now rapidly destroying them.

He told something of his grandfather's life and recalled that he once maintained a large still near Paris from which he made Whiskey in such quantities that he hauled it from there to Madison where he built flatboats and shipped the Whiskey to the market in New Orleans.

He also told of an amusing incident in the life of his grandfather, at the time of Morgan's raid. It seems that his uncle, while riding a handsome horse, stumbled into the hands of Morgan's men. One of them ordered Mr. Zener to dismount and shifting saddles told Mr. Zener to beat it with his foundered horse. On this worn out animal, Mr. Zener arrived home. His father, in turn was furious with anger and mounting another fine animal rode after Morgan's outfit to demand the return of his horse. A little later he, too, returned home on a broken down horse. They had covered him with guns and made him also mount one of their nags while they rode off with his good horse.

The Zeners and the Ayers have a long military record, members of their family having served in wars on the American Continent since the Seventeenth Century.

And the almost anonymous Mr. Foster, of the historical note that aroused the writer's curiousity, according to Mrs. Stewart, is the man Elizabeth Zener married and the piece of silk cloth in his possession, part of her Wedding Gown.
