A PIONEER SETTLER OF GRAHAM TOWNSHIP
Abraham Walton Emigrates
from Maine to Jefferson County Indiana
Editor Madison
Courier
As the people are
constantly changing and moving around it is soon forgotten who first
settled and cleared the forest years ago. In the year 1777 my
grandfather, Abraham Walton was born in New Hampshire and afterwards lived
in Cumberland County, Mass. I hold a deed for 80 acres of land, which he
owned. He also lived in Knox County, Maine and raised a family of boys and
girls there. People there in Maine that were going west; would say go
to Indiana territory and that seemed to be the talk among
people. Between the years 1810 and 1815 my grand father Walton with his
family started from Knox County, Maine with a wagon and team and went as
far west as Pittsburgh, Pa. When he arrived at Pittsburgh he bought a
flat boat and floated down the Ohio River to Hanover Landing. From
there he made his way through the dense forest in the western part of
Jefferson County in Graham Township and entered a quarter section of land.
I hold the old deed, dated May 10, 1815, with James Madison's signature on
it. Abraham Walton, with his three sone, Abraham, Dudley, and Isiah,
went to work with only the ax, and cut and felled the trees with tops
together as much as they could, and when dry set fire to them. When
spring came they went through the charred limbs with corn and stick and in
the mellow fertile soil they planted corn. It was not cultivated and
they raised plenty of corn. There on the land they built their house and
barn and as a creek flows through the corner of the land it took its name
after my grandfather, Walton's Creek. Later on grandfather built a saw
mill on the creek. I am not able to say what year it was built but it was
one of the first saw mills built in the township. Signs of the
millrace are still there yet. Grandfather died about the year 1858. I
am not sure but I think that is about the date of his death. He was buried
on the farm he entered.
