WIRT BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY
In May of 2009 I decided to stop in at a cemetery which I passed every time I went from North Vernon to Madison. I have often wondered at the strange way the stones are set up beside the Wirt Baptist Church on a hill on Hwy 7. My visit did little to enlighten me but much to peak my curiosity about the cemetery.
The following are pictures I took that day, you will note some stones are lying on a bed of gravel much like a mosiac others are standing as if they have been in that place for many years and some others look like they were just lined up and reset there. I did some questioning and have been told when Hwy 7, was improved at this spot the stones were moved. No one has yet answered my questions about the graves they once stood over, were they also moved? If anyone can enlighten me I would appreciate it. There is a listing of those buried in the Wirt Cemetery on this site so this is just a pictorial view of the stones as I saw them, I tried to photograph any that could be read in any way.
