HISTORIES

MONROE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

In order to understand the origin and history of Monroe Church we must learn of the founding of what rightfully is termed its
"parent chruch"
In the year 1816 there came from Dayton, Ohio, a man, Robert Elliott by name, a tanner by trade and a devout Presbyterian by religious belief.
He purchased from the government the quarter section of land lying directly south of this present church building, receiving for it a deed signed by President Madison
and written upon sheepskin.
Since there was no church in the immediate vicinity and feeling the need for a religious organization he decided to call a meeting at his house
to discuss the matter. The outcome of this meeting was the organization of a church on Sept. 25, 1830, first known as the Middlefork Presbyterian Church, and three
years later Presbytery changed its name to Lancaster Presbyterian Church. There was no church building but meetings were held around at various homes. In 1838 the
congregation built a huge log church on a part of Robert Elliott's farm. This structure was destroyed by fire in 1902, having been used as a dwelling after it ceased
to be used for church purposes.
The agitation caused by the "Abolition Movement" found its way into the Lancaster Church and under the date of June 22, 1839 the record states
that there was a division in the church and part of the membership adhered to the New School (Anti-Slavery) and part to the Old School (Pro-Slavery). It was then that the Monroe Presbyterian Church
was born, although for a time it went by the name of Lancaster Church N. S. The charter members consisted of nine of the younger men of the "Old Church" and their wives
as follows: Robert Elliott Jr., Catherine Elliott, Anthony L. Elliott, Elizabeth Elliott, John C. Salisbuty, Leah H. Salisbury, Miles W. Craig, Elizabeth Craig, Dr. Heil
Morrison, Anna S. Morrison, William McGee, Margaret McGee, Hezekiah Patton, Anne Patton, Daniel Baxter, Susan Baxter, John Nichols, Martha Nichols.
After five years of meeting at the homes and wherever opportunity afforded a place they determined to build them a church and the present stone
structure was the result. It was built in 1844 upon ground given by Mr. and Mrs. Anthony L. Elliott, from stone quarried by members of the congregation only a short
distance from the building site. The stone work was done by Mr. Nathan Yost, an expert stone mason and so much work and material were donated that the chuch was completed
with a cash outlay of less than $500.
During this time the parent church was still holding services in its log church one fourth mile distant but the slavery question being settled by the
Civil War, the two bodies decided to unite in hiring a minister who was to preach alternately in the two churches. After five years of this plan, on Sept 10, 1870 the
New Albany Presbytery appointed a committee to aid the two bodies in uniting the Lancaster Church joined with the Monroe Church and its list of elders and members was added
to that of Monroe. The name of Robert Elliott, Sr., founder and first elder of the original church headed that list, he then, being a man eighty-six years old.
In 1935 the church undertook its largest tsk in the field of expansion when it decided to build the Church Hall, a much needed building for social as
well as religious gatherings. The cornerstone for this structure was laid Aug. 15, 1935 and it was dedicated at a meeting of Presbytery in October, 1936, held at Monroe.
We are indeed proud of the fact that during it s one hundred years of existance the church has never been closed to services. Although there have
been periods when no regular minister served the church, there was always a Sabbath School in session the year around and supplied pastors at intervals. Although we can not
point to any remarkable achievements, as compared to some, however, we feel that the influence of this church in the community is not to be measured. Who knows what lives it
has been the means of changing. Let us strive to be faithful and loyal to the principles for which our church has always stood.
The following pastors have served the church: Rev. J. H. Johnson, 1840-1841; James Brown 1842; C. L. Bartlett, 1842-46; H. Curtis, 1846-47; A. A.
Vance, 1847-50; (died while pastor); J. M. Sadd, 1851-54; D. A. Bassett, 1854-58; Benjam'n Neal, 1859 (died after two months); Alexander Parker, 1862-66; Rev. C. McCain, 1870-72;
J. M. McRee, 1872-77; J. H. Brownson, 1879-80; J. D. Henning, 1881-82; aperiod of supplies from 1884- to 1897, many of them from Hanover students, names as follows: J. M. Beard,
Samuel Moffett, W. R. Brown, J. M. McRee, George Lamb, Dr. Barnard, W. B. Chamberlain, Thos. C. Moffett, M. M. Oldfather, Samuel Wilson; H. G. Pollock, 1897-99; J. H. Weaver, 1899-1904;
D. C. Simpson, 1904-1912; Vernon P. Martin, 1913-1915; O. L. Morgan, April to November, 1915; J. A. Gehrette, Dec. 1915 to June 1916; Henry M. Rogers, 1916-18; Lewellyn T. Lawrence,
1920-22; Daniel C. Simpson 1922-.
Following is the list of elders: Miles W. Craig, Hiel Morrison, John C. Salisbury, Thurstoon Wood, Robert Elliott, Jr., William McGee, Robert Elliott, Sr.,
James M. Elliott, Enos Wildman, John S. Salisbury, Alex V. Elliott, Jesse S. Green, Robert D. Chambers, Avery Jordan, Isaac Chambers, S. A. Elliott, John Shaw, David O. Monroe,

and Frances Eva (Elliott) Sarver. She was a teacher in Monroe Township schools from 1912 to 1927. She was married to George W. Bayless March 18, 1922, in Jefferson County, and

Another History of the Church
A Brief History of the Monroe Presbyterian Church
By Annie E. Allen
Published in "The Hoosier Genealogist, December 1998, pages 193-218, Volume 38, No. 4
The Monroe Presbyterian Church was a small country church established in Ridpath. Monroe Township, Jefferson County, Indiana. The church
grounds, as well as the surrounding farms, were purchased by the Federal Government to form the Jefferson Proving Ground in 1941. The church was located in Section 21 of Monroe Township.
The spiritual beginning, if not the actual beginning, of the Monroe Presbyterian Church started with the formation of the Middle Fork Presbyterian Church on
25 September 1830. The name was subsequently changed to the Lancaster Presbyterian Church. A few years later, the members (mirroring a national Presbyterian conflict) split into two
sides over the interpretation of the Westminster Confession, a cornerstone of the Presbyterian Church. Part of the church conflict was over slavery. The "Old Style" approach was more
conciliatory toward Southern Presbyterians, while the "New Stylers," including the founders of Monroe sided with the New England abolitionists. Though most of the congregates were
probably against slavery, they differed in the importance they assigned to its removal. Several of the "New Stylers" who would found Monroe, like Robert Elliott, Jr., were active
in the antislavery movement. Elliott drove a wagon for a meat-packing plant and also transported runaway slaves from Madison to his farm north of town, one stop on their way to freedom.
The division between the two groups was formalized on 22 June 1839, when the Old Style adherents wrote a statement of beliefs in the session book and appended their names. (This statement
was apparently excised from the book.) The session book records the names of members who would stay with the old church, and those who broke away to start a new one The Lancaster
Presbyterian Church, New Style, which eventually became the Monroe Presbyterian Church, once again taking the name from the township. The 1839 date was considered to be the founding
date for the new church. This group also kept the original session book begun in 1830.
The church struggled for a period, meeting in various homes before realizing that if they were going to grow, they needed a building. Anthony and Elizabeth
Elliott offered a lot from their farm on which to build the church. Nathan Yost was hired to dress the stone quarried from along Middle Fort Creek, and to direct the construction crew.
The church building was completed in 1844 costing less than $500 in cash.
br>
With the completion of the building, the church began to grow. After the Civil War, the natural affection of the separated families and neighbors led to the
reunion of the Lancaster and Monroe congregations in September 1870.
Monroe was kept as the name of the unified church. In the ensuing years, it grew with the small town, Ridpath, which developed around the church. The Monroe
Church Centennial was celebrated in August 1939. The final service was held on 16 February 1941, with the Reverend Daniel Simpson leading the worship. The church was a continuously
active force in the community for over the years and was an anchor and mainstay for generations of families in Monroe Township. Volume I of Sessional Records, transcribed below, is

Session met. and was opened with prayer. Present R. James H. Johnston, Craig, and Elliot. Mr. John Hood appeared before session and stated that he had been
recently censured as he had been informed for contumacy by the session of Jefferson church: for refusing to submit to their authority, and he further stated
that this refusal was based on the supposition that his membership was at present, and had been for more than four years, in the Lancaster church, and he
therefore, wished to be informed, by this session whether his supposition was correct. Where upon it was resolved, that this session recognize Mr. Hood as
a member of Lancaster Church; and they further state that they so regarded him for the length of time above specified. The session deem it their duty to
insert on their records the following statements. viz: It is within the distinct recollection of both members of this session, that at a meeting of the
session held June 8th 1833 at which Rev. Samuel Gregg, then Pastor of Jefferson Church, was present and at which the wife of Mr. Hood was received into the
church, Mr. Hood himself made application for admission, Mr. Gregg testified verbally to Mr. Hood's good standing in the Jefferson Church, and assented to
his transfer to Lancaster church, and this session regarded Mr. Hood as having according been received, at that time, as a member of this church. It is owing
in their opinion, purely to the omission by the clerk of the session, that his name was not recorded on our minutes. Closed with prayer.

Mr. John Hood, a member of this church came before session and state that common fame charged him with unchristian conduct as having aided and abetted in a horse race

brethren, and given the enemy cause to speak reproachfully, he deeply regretted having done so and would not under similar circumstances do so again. Whereupon it was
resolved that his statements and acknowledgment be considered satisfactory to the session and be published tomorrow to the congregation. Concluded with prayer, Robert

Monroe Presbyterian (Monroe Twp., Jefferson Co.)
Written by Robert W. Scott
The Monroe Presbyterian Church was originally known as the Middle Fork Presbyterian Church, which formed on Sept. 25, 1830 in a meeting at the
home of Robert Elliott. The meeting actually began on Sept. 24. The name was changed to Lancaster Presbyterian Church on March 30, 1833. The name
originated from the fact that what became Monroe Township was then part of Lancaster Township.
A 1939 church history lists as Robert Elliott Jr., Catherine Elliott, Anthony L. Elliott, Elizabeth Elliott, John C. Salisbury, Leah H. Salisbury,
Miles W. Craig, Elizabeth Craig, Dr. H. Morrison, Anna S. Morrison, William McGee, Margaret McGee, Hezekiah Patton, Anne Patton, Daniel Baxter, Susan Nichols and Martha
Nichols. This list is not in agreement with the list dated Sept. 25 that lists only Robert and Martha Elliott, David and Fanny Loring, Miles W. and Elizabeth Craig, Charles
M. Culbertson, Rahamah Wilson, and Jane M. Elliot. The 1939 list, compiled by Katherine Bayless, apparently reflects those members remaining with Lancaster/Monroe after the
Old Style members withdrew their membership.
According to a history by Anne E. Allen (1998), who transcribed session minutes covering the period from the church's founding until 1850, the church
was split between the Old Style Presbyterians and New Style. The groups split over the interpretation of the Westminster Confession with the Old Style members being more
sympathetic to Southern Presbyterians and the New Stylers favoring New England abolitionists. On June 22,1839, the Old Style believers wrote a statement of belief in the
session book. This statement was excised from the record. This is the date from which Monroe counted its formation. (Monroe Township was formed from part of Lancaster
Township, hence the original church name.) Session minutes show that the church was still known as Lancaster Church on March 25, 1844, but had changed its name to Monroe
by Oct. 7, 1844.
Land in Section 21 Twp. 5N Range 10E was deeded to Alexander Caldwell, William Elliott and Henry Thorne, trustees of the Lancaster Presbyterian
Church by Robert Elliott on May 29, 1840 (Jefferson Co. Deed Book S p. 170.) In another deed dated April 27, 1849, land was deeded by Robert Elliott Jr. Miles W. Craig,
Anthony Elliott, J.C. Salisbury and Thurston Wood to John C. Salisbury, Thurston Wood, and Robert Elliott, trustees for Monroe. A stone church was completed in 1844. After
the Civil War, the old and new church reconciled, with both bodies meeting in the same building from 1865 to 1870 and finally reuniting in 1870. A stone building was
completed in 1935 but the church closed on Feb. 2, 1941 as the church property was taken over as part of the Jefferson Proving Ground. Some of its membership combined
with the Smyrna Presbyterian Congregation.
