1790 Federal Census, South Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania;

Census image #5 at ancestry.com:

John Wells with 1 M 16+; 1 M 0-16; 1 F [self, William, wife Margaret] [South Huntingdon Twp. is on the southern border of Westmoreland, just
across the county line from Upper and Lower Tyrone Twp. in Fayette County, and I estimate about 10-12 miles as the crow flies from East Bethlehem Twp. in Washington Co.]

1800 Federal Census, East Bethlehem Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania

1 M 10-16;

1 M 26-45

1 F 26-45

[This is the same township where William Hawkins lived. William sold his land to William Taylor. William Taylor is is this census. Unfortunately, all names were alphabetized by the census taker, so we can't tell who John's neighbors were. This family perfectly fits the profile of John's family at that time.]

Notes for Aaron Wells:

Research Report

Finding the Children of John Boyd Wells Jr.

Aaron Wells

Family traditions that name the children of John Boyd Wells Jr. name the first child as Aaron Wells. There was only one Aaron Wells in the Jefferson County, Indiana Marriages Records and in the 1850 Census of Jefferson County. However, this identification is problematic because Aaron gives his age as 38 in 1850 while John Wells (Jr.) gives his age as 50. Aaron's age is given as 58 in 1870 and 66 in 1880. John Wells Jr. died in 1855 and there are no other sources for his birth date known at this time. Since he was married to his much younger third wife, Elizabeth Graham, he may have understated his age and been in his 50's rather than exactly 50.

In tracing the descendents of Aaron Wells and Elizabeth McCoy, I consulted Edith Chastain, a descendent of their son, Nathan Henry Wells through his only known child, Mary Ann Wells. She has in her possession a list of their children, their birth dates and the marriage dates and names of their spouses. This family source agrees very closely with independent sources, both primary and secondary.

It was my hope that further research of the children of Aaron Wells and Elizabeth McCoy might provide some additional clues that Aaron was connected to John Wells (Jr.) or his father, John Boyd Wells. Fortunately, this proved to be the case. Aaron's daughter Nancy Elizabeth Wells married William Henry Coatney, 7 March 1871, in Jefferson County, Nebraska. William was born in Jefferson County, Indiana, the son of John Samuel Coatney and Elizabeth Jane Phillips. John Samuel Coatney was born 5 Apr 1818. He married Elizabeth Jane Phillips, 14 Feb 1840. His son, William Henry Coatney was born 23 Apr 1845 and John died 7 Oct 1849. Elizabeth Phillips who was born 16 Jul 1826, married again, 9 Jun 1850, to James Wells. All these events occurred in Jefferson Co., IN. This information comes from the RootsWeb WorldConnect web site "My Branch of the Coatney's" at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=coatney. It goes on to say that Elizabeth Jane died 13 Aug 1899 in Jefferson Co. NEBRASKA. The dates for her husband James Wells are given as b. 2 Mar 1825 in Jefferson Co., INDIANA, died 20 May 1906 (locality not given). There is no information at this web site about any Wells children. Since John Wells (Jr.) was also said to have had a son, James Wells, who has not been accounted for, this information is very intriguing. I will be following up on this lead in my research in finding James. This web site also says that Elizabeth Jane Phillips' father was William Phillips. However, since the children of John Phillips and Sarah Wells, daughter of John Boyd Wells, born between their marriage, 24 Jun 1824, in Jefferson Co., IN and the oldest child, Wesley, b. ca. 1831, enumerated with them in 1850, have not yet been discovered, I will also be looking into this very carefully. Here is the current information I have about the children and grandchildren of Aaron Wells and Elizabeth McCoy.

Notes for Eli Wells:

ELI AND MARY J. LEWIS-WELLS

Eli Wells was born in 1839 to Samuel and Elizabeth Baker-Wells and grew up on a farm about three miles east of Paris, IN. Eli’s grandfather, John Wells, first came to Hagerstown, PA from Scotland with three of his brothers. In Hagerstown, John married a woman named Hawkins. They came over the mountains to the Ohio river, then down the river by flat boat, and settled in Jefferson County, IN.

On September 15, 1864, at the residence of Bennett Nay, Jefferson County, IN, Eli married

Mary Jane Lewis. They started housekeeping in Jackson County, just south of Seymour. Later they moved to Jennings County, two miles west of Commiskey, where Eli owned and operated a large veneering mill at Wells Town. Eli’s wife, Mary, was born in 1845; she was the only child of Mariah Lowry, who died only a few days after she was born. After 1850 she was raised by her grandmother and her husband, Bennett Nay. They lived near Lick Branch Church, east of Deputy. After Bennett died in 1866, Mary’s grandmother Polly Nay came to live with her and Eli. "Polly" was born near Frankfort, KY on September 11, 1799. She came to Indiana with her father in 1814, settling in the Coffee Creek area two years later. Polly lived to the ripe old age of eighty-seven, full of stories of the wilderness and fierce Indians that were part of the landscape when she arrived. She had known some of the folks killed by Indians at the Pigeon Roost Massacre, and both of her husbands had been veterans of the War of 1812. So she had a vehement dislike for Indians. In 1881 Polly willed everything she possessed to Mary Jane and her children.

Eli’s saw mill was very successful, and he also engaged in farming. He was twice elected commissioner of Jennings County. In 1884, after being swindled out of their fortune, Eli and Mary moved to Commiskey where they resided the remainder of their lives. They had three children,

Charles, Caroline, and Melville Wells. Charles went on to become Recorder of Jennings County for two years before moving to Lawrenceburg, IN where he worked for the Internal Revenue Service. He and his wife Leona had two sons, Roger and Charles Marion. Melville became a professor

of Engineering at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, IL. He and his wife Mary Francis had two children, Morse Marshall and Mary. Caroline went to the west coast but returned to make her home with her mother. In 1921, she became a cashier at the Citizens Bank of Commiskey. In 1947, an attempted robbery of the Commiskey Bank brought her name to headlines across the country. Following is quoted from a news item: "On Monday morning, one slender, lone woman, unarmed, faced a bandit who flashed a gun at her and demanded money. She slammed the cashier ‘s door in his face, scooped up the cash and locked it in the vault and the would-be robber left hurriedly without getting a dollar" She died at the age of eighty-six, still living in her parent’s old house in Commiskey. Eli has one descendant still in Jennings, his great-grandson, John H. Wells

(grandson of Charles) resides in Vernon.

Jefferson Co., IN Marriage records

Phillips, John Fewell, Mary 11/26/1852

On the 1850 Jefferson Co., IN census, 5th ward Madison census, Mary Fewell, age 17, born Indiana, was living in the home of

O. H. and May Ong. I have assumed she is the same Mary Fewell who married John Phillips in 1852 since she appeared to be the only one in Jefferson except for a twelve year old child living in the home of her father, John Fewell.

Children of Sarah Wells and John Phillips are:

58 i. Amanda M.4 Phillips, born January 09, 1827; died May 12, 1903. She married William McClanahan 1847; born November 13, 1821 in Jefferson Co, Ind; died May 15, 1888 in Indiana.

Notes from Sharon Witt Seaver, 434 Gunnison Gorge Dr., Ballwin, MO 63011

Wesley Whitsitt was the son of Samuel Verner Whitsitt, Jr. and Elizabeth King, according to e-mail received from Gordon Weddle <gweddle@campbellsvil.edu>

on Sept. 19, 1997. According to FTM Tree submitted by Robert C. Haefer, he was the son of Samuel Whitsett and Aniseth Phillips.

My mother, Neva Laird Witt, told me that Wesley Whitsitt composed hymns under the name "C. E. Leslie". Wesley and Laurana Whitsitt lived near Lemuel and Polly Wells in Indiana. They are often mentioned in the Lemuel Wells Diary.
