Portland Man , In Sewer Pit Mishap, Dies

PORTLAND—Waldo Spade, 52, Portland, who was injured in a sewer pit mishap Monday, died at 5 a.m. today in Jay County Hospital.

Spade sustained a skull fracture, a compound fracture of the left leg and other injuries when he slipped and fell from a ladder 15 feet into the pit at the new sewage treatment plant southwest of here.

He was working with Floyd Elenberger who was down in the pit. Thinking that he was being overcome by gas, Elenberger called to Spade for help.

In rushing to his fellow employee’s assistance, Spade slipped and fell to the bottom of the pit. He brushed Elenberger while falling and caused him to sustain a cut over the right eye.

Elenberger climbed out of the pit and summoned firemen and an ambulance.

Spade, a native of Portland leaves his widow, Latresha; a daughter, Mrs. George Shepherd, Portland; two grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Lucy Haines, Portland, and a sister, Mrs. A. B. Churchill, Grand Rapids, Mich.

Spade was a member of the Moose and Eagles Lodges.

Friends may call at the Baird Funeral Home, where the Rev. J. H. Nall will officiate at services at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Green Park Cemetery.
