Robert Dale Wherry Sr. age 92 passed
away Sunday December 2, 2018 in Crown Pointe of Portland. He was born in
Portland February 11, 1926 the son of Kenneth and Mildred Tharp (Herrman)
Wherry. He was married June 23, 1951 to Donna VanMatre who survives. He was
a US Navy WW II veteran and 1944 Portland High School graduate. He was owner
and operator of City Cigar Store in Portland for over 65 years. He attended
Fellowship Baptist Church and was member of Portland Elks, Portland Moose,
American Legion Post #211, Portland Country Club and Hickory Hills Country
Club.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years
Donna, two daughters Connie Irwin (husband Tim) and Jama Pensinger (husband
Guy) both of Portland, four grandchildren Lacey Ninde (husband Dan), Keia
Wood (husband Joe), Cale Hearn (wife Dia) and Corey LeMaster. Seven great
grandchildren Xavier, Maebry, Spencer, Jacob, Cooper, Ashlynn and Madalynn.
He was preceded in death by his son Robert Wherry Jr.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday
December 7th in the Fellowship Baptist Church with Pastor Hugh Kelly
presiding. Visitation will be prior to the services from 12:00 – 2:00 PM.
Burial will be in the Green Park Cemetery. Baird-Freeman Funeral Home are in
charge of arrangements. Memorials can be made to the Jay County Cancer
Society or Jay County Heart Fund.
