Geraldine (Gagle) Velasco went to be with her Lord January 13, 2020. She
was born in Jay County, Indiana but spent her life in Ohio until she moved
to Arizona in 1962. She was a resident of Arizona until returning to Ohio in
1987. Gerry was employed by Beneficial Finance in Dayton for 20 years,
taught one year at Patterson Co-Op and Brown School, Dayton and taught 19
years at Cholla Schools Washington District in Phoenix. Washington District
gave her an award in recognition of outstanding service to the children of
Washington District. Gerry was a graduate of Dixie High School, Miami
University, Miami-Jacobs College and received a Masters Degree from Arizona
University.
Gerry was State President of Arizona State Professional
Educators for 5 years. She was Sunday School Superintendent and teacher of
UM church, Bellefontain, Indiana for many years, a member of New Lebanon
Brethren Church, Phoenix Grace Brethren Church and now a member of
Brookville Grace Brethren Church. Later, while wintering in Arizona she
attended Calvary Community Church. She was an active member of Lebonah
League, a Christian Youth Group in Dayton, OH. In 2017 she received an
Honorary Alumni award from Grace College of Winona Lake, Indiana. Gerry
enjoyed travel and traveled extensively all her life, visiting all 50
states, a lot of Canada, Mexico, Europe and Cuba (before Castro).
Preceding her in death were her loving parents, Orlo and Delee (Brewington)
Gagle and brother Tommy Lee and her beloved husband, Gilbert. Surviving are
cousins, Linda Hannigan, Kathleen Francis of Newark, Ohio, Richard White of
Utica, Ohio, Susie Schrock, Sharon Thompson, Cindy Courtney and Sam Gillum
of Indiana, Ruth and Jimmy Cummings, Houston,Texas and Doris Hokett, Lagos,
Nigeria. Craig and Sandy Cobaugh were a wonderful help to her husband,
Gilbert and her. Other special friends were the Barnetts and Zieglers,
Landis’s and Franklins. There are many special friends, Sandy Gatlin, Nancy
Tompkins and many more too numerous to mention and a special former fourth
grade student Traci and mother Pat and a former fourth grade Sunday School
student, Jerry Abbott.
The funeral service will be held at 6:00 PM
Thursday, January 16, 2020 at the Grace Brethren Church – 665 Westbrook Road
– Brookville, OH. A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 17 in
the chapel at Green Park Cemetery in Portland, IN. In lieu of flowers,
please make contributions to the Brookville Grace Brethren Church. Robert L.
Crooks Funeral Center of West Alexandria is entrusted with local
arrangements and the Williamson-Spencer and Penrod Funeral Home of Portland,
IN in charge of the Indiana burial arrangements.
