Fleming
Alma May Fleming, longtime Portland business
woman died Sunday evening at Portland Community Care Center West where she
had resided the past year. She was 80.
Miss Fleming was an abstracter
for the Jay County Abstract Co for 53 years, retiring in May of 1984 when
she sold the business.
She was a member of the West Walnut Street
Church of Christ.
Miss Fleming was a 50 year member if the Order of
the Eastern Star Chapter 91 where she served as worthy matron in 1948 and
was the treasurer for more than 25 years. She was a member of the Past
Matron’ Club of the lodge.
She was also a member of the White Shrine
of Jerusalem No. 31 where she was treasurer for several years. She was a
charter member of the Gamma Alpha Chapter of Psi Iota Xi Sorority, -was a
50-year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution of Portland, the
Daughters of the American Colonists Adams-Jay-Wells County Board of
Realtors, serving as president from 1960 to 1961, served on the Portland
Planning Commission from 1981 to 1992 and was active with the Jay County
Hospital Auxiliary, donating more than 1,000 hours of service.
Born
May 16, 1912, in Portland, she was the daughter of Carl and Hazel May
(Harman) Fleming.- She was a 1930 graduate of Portland High School.
Surviving are one brother, Ted Fleming, 305 S Meridian St., Portland, with
whom she made her home; two ants; one uncle; and several cousins.
Services are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Portland Chapel of the
Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home with Pastor Bruce Phillips officiating.
Burial will be in Green Park Cemetery.
Friends may call at the
funeral home from 2 to 8p.m. Tuesday and prior to services Wednesday.
Portland Chapter OES No. 91 will conduct a memorial service at the funeral
home.
Memorial may be made to the Alzheimer’s Support Group of Jay
County.
