Augusta Butcher
Augusta J. “Gus” Butcher, whose musical talent on the
piano and organ entertained crowds for many years, died early Wednesday at
her home in Geneva following an apparent heart attack.
She was 80.
Butcher taught piano and organ for many years, then following her years
of retirement from teaching, she provided entertainment for hundreds of
organizations and events throughout the area.
She had also worked at
the Jay Garment Co. and at the Waltz Music Store in Portland.
Born
July 19, 1919, in Adams County, she was the daughter of John Franklin and
Effie Jane (Teeter) Morningstar. She was married March 10, 1945, to Doral
“Dub” Butcher and the couple lived in Portland for many years. Following his
death in 1971, Mrs. Butcher moved to 189 S. Drive, Geneva.
She was a
member and long time organist at the West Walnut Street Church of Christ,
was a member of the Portland Eagles Lodge, Portland Moose Lodge, American
Legion Auxiliary, and VGW in Geneva.
Surviving are two brothers,
Virgil Morningstar, Fort Wayne, and Gerald Morningstar, Decatur; two
sisters, Nyla Wiehe, Decatur, and Virginia “Ruth” Foreman, Ossian; and
several nieces and nephews.
Services are set for10 a.m. Saturday in
the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Strouse officiating. Burial
will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery west of Bryant.
Friends may call at
the funeral home from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday.
Memorials may be made to
the West Walnut Street Church of Christ.
