Geneva lady, 88, dies in fire

Tragedy struck Adams county late Thursday morning when a Geneva lady dies as fire swept through her mobile home.

Dead is Mrs. Evalina M. Wooters, 88, of 325 ½ Short Street.

Mrs. Wooters, who lived alone, apparently died of asphyxiation, but the body was badly charred before firemen could remove it from the trailer.

Found In Living Room

The body was found in a living room chair. Mrs. Wooters was apparently preparing lunch in the kitchen, and the fire started from the stove, authorities said.

Geneva firemen were called out at 11 a.m. Thursday, but the fire had a good start before firefighters were able to reach the scene. They fought the blaze for two hours.

She had resided in Geneva most of her life, and lived in the mobile home on Short Street the past six months.

Born In Jay County

Born in Jay county on September 24, 1886, she was the daughter of Henry and Deborah Eckrote, Haffner, and was married to William (Will) Wooters in 1904. He preceded her in death.

Only nieces and nephews survive.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Downing funeral home, Geneva, with Rev. Dave Whitteberry officiating. Burial will be in the Gravel Hill cemetery, Bryant. Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. today.
