Cousins killed in Knox crash
A Jay County family is mourning the
loss of two teenagers killed in a single-vehicle accident in Knox Township
Thursday night.
Zachary A. Wolford, 19, 10673 West Division Road, Dunkirk, and his cousin, Cory A. Price, 17, 260 E. Second St., Pennville, both died of massive internal injuries, Jay County coroner Mark Barnett said this morning. Wolford was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived at Jay County Hospital, and Price was declared dead at the scene of the 7:21 p.m. accident, he said.
Jay County police said Wolford was driving east on Division Road, about a half a mile west of Ind. He had just left his mother's house, which is about a mile down the road. For some unknown reason, the 1992 Ford Escort went off the north side of the road. Wolford overcorrected his steering, and the station wagon went off the north side of the road. The front of the vehicle struck another tree, then slid and the passenger side of the station wagon, where Price was sitting, struck another tree. The vehicle spun 270 degrees and came to rest in a grassy area.
According to the accident report, both Wolford and Price were wearing seat belts. Rescue personnel had to extricate the teens from the vehicle.
Jay County Sheriff Todd Penrod said he did not know what caused Wolford to lose control of the car. The Area on the road where the accident occurred was flat and paved, he said. It was raining at the time of the accident, and the road was wet. "It just one of those things that we don't understand, " Penrod said. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident, Penrod said. Barnett said toxicology tests to check for traces of drugs or alcohol in teenagers systems will be sent to the Indiana State Police Department of Toxicology in Indianapolis today. Results could take three to four weeks. The test is standard following a fatal car accident, he said. Penrod said a passerby saw the accident and called police shortly after it occurred. Samaritan helicopter was called to the scene to transport Price to Fort Wayne hospital, but he died before the helicopter arrived.
Arrangements for both teenagers are pending at the Pennville Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home.
