OBITUARY
Again time has made manifest to all the certainty of nature’s relentless
laws: That all must die.
One of our best and earliest settlers has
passed away.
Judge Enoch Bowden, of this county, died at his home in
Bearcreek township, on June the 28th, 1886, aged eighty-four years and eight
months. He was born in the State of Tennessee, and settled in Jay
county in 1833, over 53 years ago. He was a consistent member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church for over 58 years, and died in the fullest faith
in the religion of his whole life. He was modest and honest, and respected
by all who knew him.
He was elected associate Judge of the Jay Circuit Court for two terms.
His service on the bench being some fourteen years-, during which time he
and his associate Judge, in the absence of the Circuit Judge, often held the
court, rendering entire satisfaction.
He was married the third time
and was the father of fourteen children. His funeral was very largely
attended and much respect paid to his memory.
Funeral services
conducted at the family residence, June 28th, by Rev. S. J. Mellinger.
