Nathan Clay, son of Obediah and Frances Winters was born in Jay County, Indiana,
October 4, 1845 and died August 12, 1894, aged 48 years, 10 months and 8 days. He was
married to Martha Coulson, January 14, 1871. To them were born four children, one son
and three daughters. The son died in infancy. The wife and daughter, two sisters and
three brothers are the near relatives who remain.
He volunteered in Company C, 8th Indiana Cavalry, August 28, 1863. While he came to
the company as a recruit, in a very short time he became a regular. He was a faithful
soldier and always ready to go whenever duty called him. Because of the ravages of
disease, he was confined in Louisville and Jeffersonville hospitals for about six months.
He did not get to serve until close of the war, being discharged not because of his own
wish, but by order of the War Department.
The funeral obsequies were performed at the home after which the remains were
interred in Green Park Cemetery.
