Harry F. Dyer

Harry F. Dyer, 78, Seymour, died at 4:35 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Memorial Hospital, Seymour.
Mr. Dyer was a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, where he served as quartermaster for 10 years. He also was a member of American Legion Post 89, Eagles Club 655 and Free and Accepted Masons Greene Lodge 577. He was in the U.S. Air Force for three years, serving in World War II in the 702nd Bomb Squad, 445th Bombardment Group. He flew 30 missions in the European Theater of Operations and was awarded the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Unit Badge, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak-leaf Clusters, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged in 1945.
Born June 23, 1923, in Worthington, he was a son of A. Earl Dyer and Clara Wall Dyer. On Oct. 12, 1946, in Linton, he married Ruth M. Calvert, who survives in Seymour.
Other survivors include two sons, Ronald L. Dyer (wife, Taunya), Indianapolis, and Thomas K. Dyer, Seymour; a daughter, Cheryl A. Orr (husband, Toby), Palm Springs, Calif.; five grandchildren, Stacy McClary, Christy L. Dyer, Micah and Marie Patman and Lincoln Thomas Dyer; a brother, Wilson Dyer (wife, Anita), Worthington; and two sisters, Marjorie Miller (husband, Gene), Worthington, and Grace Gourdouze (husband, Frank), Tuscaloosa, Ala.
He was preceded in death by a son, David “Yo” Dyer; four brothers, Earl, Bob, Marvin and Rusty; and a sister, Allegra Crooke.
The Rev. Andrew Currao will conduct services at 3 p.m. Sunday at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home, Worthington, with visitation from 1 p.m. to time of service. Burial will be in Worthington Cemetery. Graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 89, VFW Post 1925, Disabled American Veterans 47 and Vietnam Veterans 7, all of Seymour.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Myers Funeral Service, Burkholder Chapel, Seymour, with a prayer service set for 4:30 p.m. The Fraternal Order of Eagles will conduct a service at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be given to Redeemer Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
