Rollen A. Brandt

Rollen A. Brandt, died June 11, 2006, after a brief illness.
Mr. Brandt was a devoted father and husband and was an avid ham radio operator, amateur geologist, astronomer, photographer and historian, frequently quizzing his family, friends and colleagues on the Roman Empire, celestial bodies, biblical archaeology and British naval personnel of the 1600s. Life at the Brandt household was frequently like a round of “Jeopardy.” He and Opal collected gems, rocks and fossils for nearly 40 years, a collection which was donated to the geology department of Indiana University Southeast and can be viewed in the University’s Life Sciences building. Though he held a variety of jobs in the construction field, his favorite “job” was for 46 years serving as the organist for Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church, where he was well known for his Wednesday night choir rehearsal and candy selection, wardrobe and ability to make beautiful music. During the 1940s through the 1960s, he was pianist in several big bands and dance-bands. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians Louisville Local 11-637, the Indiana University Southeast Astronomy Club and the American Radio Relay League.
Born July 27, 1917, in Seymour, he was a son of Andrew and Pearl Sierp Brandt Rueter, both of whom preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Opal C. Brandt; a sister, Janet Rueter Kuehner, New Albany; three daughters, Brenda (Mike) Snyder, Betty J. “B.J.” Brandt, both of New Albany, and Barbara (Glenn) Lawrence, Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Sally Kaltman, Audrey Snyder, and Ben, Sara, Patrick and Kevin Lawrence; and two great-grandchildren, Cole and Gavin Kaltman, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Herman Rueter; four brothers, Harry, Clarence, Ralph and Oscar (Rudy) Rueter; and a sister, Mildred.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church, 918 Mount Tabor Rd., New Albany. Burial will take place at Mount Tabor Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring St., New Albany and from 10 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the church.
Memorials may be given in lien of flowers to Hospice of Southern Indiana, the Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church and the CICO/O’Bannon Foundation.
