WWI Story and Cemetery in France

I was contacted by a Hubert Martin, president of a Historical Society in Alsace, France. He asking for information on one of our WWI casualties named Private Chester A. Hartwell. Private Hartwell had died in the mountains there during the war. Mr. Martin was hoping to get copies of newspaper articles, and more information about the family of Private Hartwell, whose family moved to Missouri before his death. I was able to help with the articles, but not with the family. A person on Find-A-Grave was able to help him find the information he needed. He was researching this soldier

Mr. Martin said: "At September 29, we organize a great Centennial Ceremony and we inaugurate a monument at the place of the old cemetery. We honor all the 50 US soldiers who gave their life for peace and freedom, so Private HARTWELL."

He gave me several interesting things, with permission to post to our site.

These are PDF files of an article he wrote. One is in French, and the other has his English translation in the article, for us that cannot read french. It's very interesting!

Linthal This is the village of Linthal in the autumn. Private Hartwell lost his life in the mountains here. It is such a beautiful and peaceful looking place. This photo was dated 2009.
Oberlauhen This is how the cemetery looked in 1918. I do not know how many American soldiers still rest here. Private Hartwell was later brought home and now rests in Arlington.
