Pfc. Rosemeyer, Crothersville, Dies on Trip

Soldier Who Returned From Overseas Last Month Was On Way To Report at Fort Lee

A Crothersville soldier who had returned from fighting overseas in the Korean conflict only about six weeks ago, was killed instantly Monday in a crash between his automobile and a truck in Kentucky, members of his family have been notified.

Pfc. Earl G. Rosemeyer, 23, of Crothersville, was en route to report for duty and assignment at Fort Lee, Virginia, after a visit with his family and his mother, Mrs. Matilda Rosemeyer, in Crothersville. His wife and small son were staying with Pfc. Rosemeyer's mother until he could get settled at Fort Lee.

Details and exact location of the accident which caused the young veteran's death have not been learned. Word which was received by the family stated only that his car was in collision with a truck "about 100 miles from Louisville" in Kentucky and that he had died of severe head injuries. His automobile was "a complete loss", the information stated. He was alone in the car.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later. The Reb. J. Th. Destinon, pastor of the Dudleytown Lutheran Church, will be in charge and burial will be in the Dudleytown Cemetery.

Pfc. Rosemeyer, who had served about 14 months overseas in Korea, had landed again in the United States at San Francisco, California, about the first of September and had been spending his leave with his family at his mother's home at Crothersville. He left Crothersville Saturday afternoon to drive to Fort Lee, Virginia, to report for duty.

Pfc. Rosemeyer was born February 28, 1928, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was the forster son of Edward and Matilda Eggersman Rosemeyer, who had reared him since he was a few months old. He spent all of his life, with the exception of his army service, in Crothersville and his tragic death was a shock to his many friends.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army October 20, 1947 and served with the 809th Co. Engs. AB for approximately 14 months in Korea. His death occurred on the fifth anniversary date of his enlistment in the armed forces.

Wile stationed at a camp in Nevada, he was married on May 23, 1950, in Nevada, to Dorothy Tillery, who survives.

He is survived by the mother, the widow and one small son, Jackie.

Rites Friday For Pfc. E. Rosemeyer

Funeral services for Pfc. Earl G. Rosemeyer, 23, of Crothersville, will be conducted at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon from the Emanuel Lutheran Church at Dudleytown with the Rev. J. Th. Destinon, pastor, in charge. Burial in the Dudleytown Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted.

Pfc. Rosemeyer was killed instantly Monday in a head-on crash between his automobile and a truck near Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. His death was due to severe head injuries and his car was demolished.
