Cpl. Mackey Listed Killed In Germany
Willard A. Mackey Was Overseas Nine Months With Tank Unit of Tenth Army
Corporal Willard A. Mackey was killed in action March 1, in Germany, according to word received by his wife, Mrs. Irene Mackey, 612 Centennial street.
Cpl. Mackey was a member of a tank battalion of the Tenth Army and had been serving overseas since June, 1944. He was born August 29, 1920, near Cortland, the son of William and Emma Mackey. His father died a number of years ago, and his mother, Mrs. Emma Mackey, resides on Seymour R1.
He was married Marchj 21, 1942, in Seymour, to Irene Meyer, who survives. He is the father of a three-months-old daughter, Diana Irene, whom he had never seen.
Cpl. Mackey attended the Cortland schools, and prior to his induction, was employed at the local plant of Noblitt-Sparks Industries, Inc. He was well known and liked by a wide circle of friends who mourn his death.
Four Brothers In Army.
Inducted into the army November 28, 1942, Cpl. Mackey received training at Fort Benning, Georgia and at Camp Gordon, Augusta, Georgia; he also went on maneuvers in Tennessee. Overseas, he had been serving in France and Germany. Mrs. Mackey had received some accumulated mail from her husband on the same day she received the telegram telling of his death. His last letter to her was dated February 18.
Besides his mother, widow and daughter, he is survived by five brothers, three sisters and one half-sister; Pvt. Raymond Mackey just returned from overseas and now stationed in Michigan; Earl Mackey, inducted into the service last Friday; Sergeant Roy Mackey, stationed at Temple, Texas; Pvt. Paul Mackey, who is serving in New Guinea; Harry Mackey, of this city; Mrs. Mabel Butler, Seymour F4; Mrs. Verna Baurle, Indianapolis; Mrs. Ella Carr, Paris Crossing and Mrs. Stella Tate, who lives in Ohio.
