Pvt. H. Kriete, Missing, Is Now Reported Killed

Private Howard W. Kriete, age nineteen, who was listed missing in action in Italy since October 11, is now reported killed in action on that date, according to a War Department message received today by his father, George H. Kriete, 562 South O'Brien street.

Pvt. Kriete had just recently returned to the front lines in October after recovering from wounds received in fighting against the Germans when he was killed nine days later, it was learned.

The telegram stating Pvt. Kriete had been killed expressed regret of the Secretary of War that "unavoidable circumstances made necessary the unusual lapse of time in reporting your son's death to you." The wire stated that a letter of confirmation would follow.

Pvt. Kriete was graduated from Shields High School with the class of 1943 and entered the service on August 25, 1943, about three months later. He was sent overseas in April, 1944, and had been fighting with an infantry division of the Fifth Army in Italy.

Widely known in Seymour, Pvt. Kriete had a host of friends who are grieved to learn that he is reported killed. He was an usher at the Majestic Theater here for about two years and was well liked by his friends and classmates.

A brother, Private First Class Harold Kriete, is serving in the armed forces. Besides his father and brother, Pvt. Kriete is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Elsie M. Meahl, of New York and Miss Norma Jean Kriete, at home.
